A Message from the Headmaster
Dr. Scott's Trivium 3
Sandra, 2nd and 7th grade scholars:
We have been with Great Hearts for a few years now and I hear a lot about Socratic instruction. This sounds good, but what exactly makes a lesson “Socratic”?
Great question and thank you Sandra for your continued support and interest in our academy. Oftentimes when we think of Socratic instruction, we think first of teaching through asking questions. This is absolutely correct, but it is only the beginning of what makes a lesson Socratic. Socratic questioning begins with very basic, factual questions to establish a foundation. The next layer is to identify meaning or understanding to those facts. We continue with these types of questions until we have enough understanding to ask a larger question about the nature of humanity or pattern of reality. For example, when your 7th grader was at the Archway, she read the Narnia series in grades 3-5. Her teacher may have asked her about examples of friendship in the text. After identifying friend relationships, the teacher may ask something like “How did Eustace change through his friendship with Reepicheep? Then after examining a few different relationships, she could ask the really big question—“What does it mean to be a good friend?”
Marta, 1st grade scholar:
My child is reading slightly below grade level. She is in intervention, but I would like to help more at home. What can I do to support her?
If I had one academic thing I would hope all parents would do, it would be to read to or read with their children. The child is never too old to listen to a story from Dad or Mom. If I could pick a second thing, it would be to set a culture or reading in the home beginning with parents reading and discussing books with each other and with the children.
Paul, K and 4th grade scholars:
I keep hearing rumors of a Dad’s club. What is that and how do I get involved?
I am grateful for your interest in the Dad’s club. There are precious few men who work in the elementary education field. Consequently, children spend much of their day without hearing a male voice or having a manly influence. Dad’s club was created to fill this void. The dads play with scholars at recess and read with them during reading time. Unfortunately, we do not have a coordinator for the dads yet this year, so I don’t have anyone to refer your inquiry to. It is a great program and I do not want to lose it, but without someone to manage it, we cannot open up these special volunteer opportunities. Here’s a call to all the dads, let’s step up and make this happen!
Have a great weekend everyone!
Heartily devoted,
Clay Scott, Ed.D.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!!!!!!
At Great Hearts, we are committed to teaching our students to live a life full of truth, beauty, and goodness. As a not-for-profit public, charter school, we receive less funding from the state each year. This deficit is larger than $1,500 per student. Your student's classical liberal arts education is made possible by parents and community members like you who unify us through giving to our Community Investment campaign each year. We need everyone to participate as every donation regardless of the size goes a long way to keeping our school fully funded.
Thank you to every family in our community who has already partnered with us to provide the important work being done in your student's classroom each day.
Let’s rally Unity in our Community with gifts to Community Investment and grow a beautiful culture of generosity for our children together.
Please watch the following video for more information on community investment and set up a one-time or monthly gift at archwaytrivium.org/support.

School Messenger Communication
Great Hearts and Archway Trivium continue to utilize the system School Messenger for emails, robo-calls, and text messaging to inform families of campus related academy emergencies and other communications. SchoolMessenger has a new automatic opt-in for text feature. During the registration/re-enrollment process families confirmed their wish to participate in text communications. Great Hearts will now automatically opt in contact information given during the registration/re-enrollment process with the options you selected. You will notice at the beginning of July you will be opted in for text messaging. If you would like to opt out of text messages simply reply STOP to the text from 67585. You can also enter the code 67585 with the message STOP to block any text messaging. Please note, if opting out, you will not receive texts regarding emergencies on campus.
Email Communications
If you know of parents who are not receiving these communications, please ask them to check their junk/promotions email folders, and then email bmcdonald@archwaytrivium.org for assistance.
You can also find ALL school-wide communications on our website on the Latest News page.
