The Friday Flash

October 30, 2026

Friday Flash Notes for October 30, 2026

Dear friends,

This weekend we observe the feast of All Saints, one of the principal feasts of the church. It is an opportunity for us to remember those who have gone before us into eternal life, and to remember that this will be our own end as well.

Our tradition uses the word “saint” in two ways. On the one hand, it refers to those special figures in Christian history who have experienced or shared God's grace in an exceptional way. These are the capital-S Saints. But we also follow scripture, and especially the apostle Paul, in using the word “saints” to refer to all of us, all of us who are following the Way of Jesus.

Because of these two usages, the church calendar actually has two paired feast days, All Saints’ Day on November 1, and the Commemoration of All Faithful Departed (sometimes known as All Souls) on November 2. In medieval times, All Saints was the day for remembering those famous Saints, and All Faithful Departed was for remembering everyone else.

The distinction is not hard and fast, though, and in our observance of All Saints this Sunday, we will essentially combine both observances. We will remember both the famous saints who serve as exemplars for us throughout church history, and those saints we have known in our own lives. Because all of us are in the process of being sanctified, made holy, little by little, all of us can be acknowledged on All Saints.

You are invited to bring images and mementos to church on Sunday for our All Saints table, to be blessed at the beginning of the service. And when the names of the departed are read from the necrology during the Eucharistic prayer, you are invited to say “here” or “present” when you hear your loved one’s name read. Because in death we believe that life is changed, not ended.

As our burial liturgy says, “All of us go down to the dust; yet even at the grave we make our song: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia” (BCP 499).

Let us give thanks for all the saints!

Peace and all good,

Kevin+

You are invited to bring to church this Sunday images and mementos of the departed for our All Saints table, which we adorn in honor of the famous saints of the universal church as well as those saints we have known in our own lives. Please place them on the table at the back of the sanctuary when you arrive at church. The table and mementos will be blessed at the beginning of the service.

Fall Adult Formation: Getting to Know the Book of Common Prayer

Sundays November 15 and 22, 11:30am in the Chapel

At the heart of our Anglican way is the Book of Common Prayer. The prayer book structures our common life and serves as the central focus of unity for the whole Anglican Communion -- but what exactly is it and how do you use it? This two-part series will help demystify the Book of Common Prayer. The first session on 11/15 will examine the history of the prayer book and how the book has changed from 1549 to today. The second session on 11/22 will be a hands-on exploration of the book and its supplements, including how to pray Morning and Evening Prayer and how to follow the Sunday Eucharist in the prayer book.

Upcoming Events

Soup Sales

Soup sales resume November 1 and will continue on the first Sunday of the month thru April. $8/qt. If you would like to make soup the sign up sheet is on the bulletin board in the Narthex.

Fall Cleanup Day

Saturday November 7, 10am-2pm

Do you have a little time to help spruce up the church and make things look their best? Join us for a fall cleanup day on November 7 from 10-2pm. There will be light tasks to do around the church property, both indoors and outdoors, including dusting, polishing, pruning, raking, and so on. No experience necessary! Lunch will be provided.

Confirmation and Reception with the Bishop

Sunday December 6

Bishop Kevin Nichols is making a visitation to our parish on Sunday December 6. Anyone who wishes to be confirmed or received into the Episcopal Church is invited to do so at this service. Confirmation is “a mature public affirmation” of one’s faith, with laying on of hands by the bishop, which permits one to take part in governance of the church. Reception is the incorporation of one’s confirmation into the Episcopal Church for those who have already been confirmed by a bishop in another tradition (such as the Roman Catholic Church). If you are interested in being confirmed or received in December, please speak to Fr Kevin. There will be a required preparation session.

Temporary Storage Space Needed for St. Andrew's Yard Sale Items

One of our parishioners is downsizing and has some items to donate for the church yard sale before their move. If you or someone you know (preferably in the Lewisburg area) has some space in a room, basement, or garage that could be used to store these items until the yard sale in May, please let Janie Coyne know (janecoyne@verizon.net or 570-898-3195). Thank you!

Outreach Ministries

Community Harvest Cooking Team

As a partner congregation in the local Community Harvest feeding program, we have a team of volunteers who spend one afternoon a month cooking and preparing meals for the community (our cooking day is the first Monday afternoon of each month from 1-4pm). We are always looking for more volunteers who are available during the day. If you're interested in volunteering with the team, please let Fr. Kevin know.

The Diaper Bank

The diaper bank serves guests on the third Saturday of each month, from 10am - noon

Volunteers are needed for each distribution day, from 9:45am to 12:15pm.

Click Here to sign up for a volunteer slot.

It’s a fact…$10 donated to the diaper bank at St. Andrew’s supplies one baby with diapers and wipes at our monthly distribution. Currently a bag of 50 diapers or 25 pull ups. Your continued support keeps this happening here. Thank you!

Several foundations and institutions have generously donated to our diaper bank project. Check out the list on our sponsor board next to the church office door!

Food Bank Donations

We are always accepting donations for the Union County Supplemental Food Program! You can leave your donations in the shopping cart in the narthex. Donations are taken over to the food bank each month.

YTD Fiscal Update

January thru July

How are we doing (financially)? If you looked at the fiscal summary in a recent Friday Flash, you may have some sense of the answer: better than expected. We seem to be moving in the right direction. If you've been keeping up with your pledge (or even paying ahead or making a special gift), thank you! Many factors influence when income and expenses occur during the calendar year. At this point, expenses are lower than budgeted, and income is higher than budgeted. If those trends continue, we will still have a deficit for the year, but it will be less than the $43,000 deficit that we budgeted. A smaller deficit for this year would put us in a good position to reduce (and eventually eliminate) the deficit in our budget in coming years.

Mission Statement

We, a loving and inclusive community united in Christ, both joyfully and humbly celebrate our tradition and faith through worship, fellowship, spiritual formation, and prayer. With our commitment to love, justice, and peace for all peoples, we stand ever ready to share with others the bounty of God's grace to God's greater glory.
