General Knowledge
If you are like me and enjoy long evening meetings with passionate individuals stating their opinions and concerns, then this was a good week for you. The special board meeting Tuesday night had one of the highest turnouts of the last year. The next night, we had to pull in an extra chair to accommodate the attendance at Wednesday’s Finance Committee. I worked 40 hours by lunchtime yesterday. It has been a great week! That might seem odd or even like evidence of a chemical imbalance or brain tumor, but I would rather have a meeting full of members than an empty meeting. I followed up with several members after the meetings, and it was very helpful. Talking to members really is the best part of the job.
We are incorporating two member recommendations I received from calls I made after the meeting. First, we will be posting printed board meeting agendas and the Friday Flyer on all the bulletin boards around the ranch in addition to being emailed and posted on the website. Second, the DRAFT Fiscal Year 2026-27 Fee Schedule will be posted with the agenda so that members have a chance to review it ahead of the meeting on Thursday, April 23rd. The draft fee schedule includes changes recommended by the Finance Committee aimed at getting the mussel program closer to cost recovery. It is recommended that the individual inspection fee increase to $18, the 6-month increase to $120, and the 12-month increase to $200. Believe it or not, there are some recommended reductions too, like reducing the single mussel inspection fee for non-motorized vessels to $8 and reducing the self-inspector fee to $50/year.
The agenda this week focuses mainly on the FY 2026-27 budget items and the 2026 Reserve Study, which is better described as our capital budget. The reserve study lists all of our infrastructure and assets worth more than $2,500 that have a useful life of less than 30 years. The draft budget includes a monthly assessment increase to $205/month. This will cover the increase in operating expenses due to everything from fuel to labor and insurance costs, but most of the increase will go to our reserves. The budget calls for putting over $2M into our reserves for infrastructure and amenity maintenance/improvements. The proposed budget also includes a one-time special assessment of $100 that will be earmarked for road improvements.
I hope to see you there!
Jim
