General Knowledge
Well, it seems that we skipped right over summer this year and jumped back into “winter.” I use the quotes because I am from New Hampshire, and this is perfectly appropriate summer weather for New England. Whether you are in New England or CA, this weird weather makes the weeds grow. See what I did there with the use of homophones? Mrs. Johnson, my 3rd-grade teacher, would be so proud! Anyway, the weather is frustrating our weed abatement efforts. Fortunately, help is on the way! Our contract mowing company starts Monday, and if I can trust my all-knowing iPhone, hotter, sunnier weather is on its way.
If you are interested in knowing when the contract mowing or sheep will be in your neighborhood, give us a call. Ideally, we would have an interactive map on the website with a sheep tracker app, but for the time being, we are keeping it old school and just asking our Maintenance Manager, Alvino.
Last night’s May Board of Directors meeting was well attended, thanks to a discussion around four different resolutions related to boat/RV storage in neighborhoods that percolated up to the Board from the Architectural & Environmental Control Committee. The Board decided to table the resolutions after hearing feedback from a number of members, which was great! I would much rather have a full room of members engaged and interested in what’s on the agenda than an empty room. One of the things we desperately need to do around here is update our CC&Rs, and I really mean we. Updating the CC&Rs requires a vote of the membership, and that means all of us being engaged.
Our CC&Rs are so out of date that they require roofing materials and fencing that no longer comply with State or County laws. There are numerous restrictions that are no longer allowed in CA and cannot be enforced. There are inconsistencies with County standards, which makes it frustrating for members trying to build. Finally, with 16 different sets of CC&Rs, there are so many inconsistencies that it makes compliance a nightmare.
The effort to update the CC&Rs began five years ago and lost steam somewhere, but we really need to get it back on track, and last night’s meeting offered valuable insight into how members feel about boat/RV storage in neighborhoods. It was very helpful, and we were glad so many folks showed up. Please stay tuned for other updates that we will bring to the Board for member feedback. This is the most effective way to make sure members are aware and have a voice in changes. The ultimate goal is to have one master set of CC&Rs with a separate architectural document that can be amended to follow State and County regulations. Of course, any master set of CC&Rs would also have to reflect and protect the important individual character of our individual neighborhoods. It is a big undertaking, and we are going to need everyone’s help.
The last discussion was around our quarterly priorities. We have a number of ongoing priorities, but we did take a moment to celebrate the completion of big projects like the revision of our reserve study and annual budget, and smaller projects like the renovation of the marina bathroom trailer and repair of the lower marina road. Speaking of road maintenance, the Board added road maintenance and upgrading the Rec. Barn camera to the priority list. We get a lot of complaints that people can’t see members speaking, Lisa or Scott, due to our current camera angle. I am also not on camera, but no one ever complains that they can’t see me.
Quick reminder that there is a special Board meeting tomorrow, Saturday, May 30th, at 9:00 am at the Rec. Barn. Different Bat-time, same Bat-channel. The meeting will focus exclusively on Flock Safety. This is an opportunity for members to get more information about Flock Safety and provide feedback.
See you then!
