General Knowledge

I want to congratulate all the candidates for a great job last weekend at the forum. I thought that they all did well showing their qualifications to serve on the board and what is important to them. I hope the forum helped you feel more confident in casting your votes. According to The Inspectors of Elections website, only 20.7% of members have voted. You might remember from last year that we need to get 25% of members to reach a quorum and make the election official. Please let us know if you have any questions about how to vote or feel free to email The Inspectors of Elections directly at info@tieivote.com.

I have been asked what happens if we don’t get a quorum. Basically, we would adjourn the meeting and the current board stays in place until a quorum is achieved. That might sound like a good idea for those of us lamenting the coming loss of Director Scott Keller who chose not to run again, but serving on the board is not indentured servitude and we will eventually have to let him go. So do Scott a favor and cast your votes. Fortunately, there are a lot of good choices with current Directors Masen Yaffee and Tom Swanon being joined by Terry Chavis, Marc Coons, Dave Henrey, Kim Kincannon, and Denise Revell. After you vote, reward yourself with a fun weekend.

Next weekend we hope to see you at the Rec. Barn on Saturday. August 15th at 10:00am for the Annual Meeting (board election). But this weekend there are fun things to do after you vote. Paso distilleries are hosting events as part of the Paso Robles Distillery Trail Weekend. The Paso Rotary is hosting a Winemakers’ Cookoff. Atascadero’s Summer Concert series is featuring “Lady and The Tramps,” a classic rock cover band. That’s cool, but I am a little bummed that they aren’t recreating the magical musical moments from the Disney classic. Maybe they take requests. Whatever you do this weekend, enjoy your time off and then get ready to come hang with us on the 15th!

With the Fair over, we are experiencing a little lull, but we are getting lots of reservations for Labor Day. If you are planning to rent a boat slip, a campground spot, or the party dock, get your reservations in soon.

As your Paso Robles school board representative, I would be remiss if I didn’t remind everyone that school starts next week on Thursday, August 13th. If you don’t have kids in school, then you will still want to leave a little early in the morning to allow for the added traffic. Compliance will be at the bus stop on Gateway at the park to enforce the 15-mph speed limit near the crosswalk in the morning and afternoon. If your commute takes you through town, remember that the City narrowed 24th St. at Lewis-Flamson Junior High and it will likely back up traffic until everyone readjusts.

To sum up: good job candidates, please vote, then reward yourself for doing your civic duty with something fun this weekend, kids are back this Thursday, next weekend party with us at the Rec. Barn, and get in your reservations for Labor Day!

Have a great weekend!

Jim
