We did it! We reached a quorum and our election can be validated. According to tieivote.com, almost 30% of members voted online. As of yesterday, they had received 80 paper ballots. Electronic voting is available until 10:00 am tomorrow morning, but if you haven’t sent in a paper ballot by now, it is unfortunately too late, because it won’t get there in time and we cannot accept paper ballots here. They have to be mailed to The Inspectors of Elections to be counted.
Tomorrow, at 10:00 am at the Rec. Barn, the annual meeting (election) will open with an introduction of the folks at The Inspectors of Elections, and they will explain the election process. They will then count the paper ballots and display the results of the election. As they are counting on screen, we will hear verbal reports from the Board and staff. The Inspectors of Elections will inform us when they have tabulated the results of the election. We will seat the new board and adjourn the annual meeting. The new board will then call to order the organization meeting and make board appointments to the officer positions (president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer) and committees.
The organization meeting will be adjourned, and we will look forward to seeing you all at the regular monthly meeting on August 27th, when the board will consider the appointments of the rest of the members of the committees. If you are interested in serving on one of the committees, please let us know. The HROA relies heavily on the volunteer efforts of members who serve on numerous committees.
Keeping with this year’s theme of wonky weather, we closed the small pool yesterday. We will also likely be reducing the mussel kiosk hours to match demand. Mussel inspections are available at the main gate even if the kiosk is closed. Our goal is to provide services members need efficiently. For your planning purposes, the mussel kiosk will close for the season after Labor Day weekend, and we will wind down the pool season as fewer and fewer people brave the wonky weather.
Speaking of wonky weather, with all of the dry heat (which frankly I have never thought was as great as it is cracked up to be), we are seeing fires pop up around the State. In fact, our own resident Board member/Cal Fire Division Chief Tom Swanson has been out fighting wildfires for the last couple of weeks. The recent fires inspired a question from one of our seniors this past week.
I attend the Heritage Village Seniors board meeting every month and was joined by Board President Masen Yaffee. If you have never been, you should go. The Seniors are awesome! When they heard I was turning 50 this year, they referred to me as just a baby. It was very encouraging, given most of my age-related comparisons are made by a couple of smart-alecky young men who share my last name, live in my house, eat my food, and like to refer to their mother and me as “unc” from time to time. Anyway, one of the amazing individuals at the seniors meeting asked about alerts in case of a wildfire close to home. San Luis Obispo County has two services for this very reason.
