HAPPY NEW YEAR, WEST SCHOOL!
We hope everyone enjoyed a relaxing and refreshing break, it is great to see everyone back virtually this week!
The PTC is busy planning programs and events to keep us entertained and learning this winter! First off, registration is open to third and fourth graders for West School's Variety Show, Bright Lights on Broadway! This year’s variety show will be broadcast virtually on Thursday, February 4th at 6:00 PM. Grab your family and snuggle up on the couch as we enjoy a night seeing our West stars on the big screen!
In addition, we have several parent education events, so mark your calendars! Next Tuesday, January 12th at 9:30 AM Superintendent Dr. Bryan Luizzi will speak virtually at our first joint elementary school PTC meeting of the year. Dr. Luizzi will present the 2021-22 budget, provide a covid update and share new initiatives and goals for next year. Later next week, on Thursday, January 14th at 9:30 AM, the elementary principals will hold a virtual presentation for incoming 2021-22 kindergarten parents which will include social, emotional, and developmental milestones for kindergarten. In February, the elementary schools and New Canaan CARES are partnering to bring in speaker Lynn Sullivan, Director of Community Equity at Yale University’s School of Divinity, on Tuesday, February 9th at 9:30 AM. Ms. Sullivan will lead us in a comprehensive and engaging workshop which will offer parents thoughtful information around diversity in education.

The West School PTC Nominating Committee has initiated a search for potential volunteers to serve on the 2021-2022 Executive Board. We welcome nominations from within our parent community, and we encourage you to nominate yourself if you are interested in this important commitment. VIRTUAL JOINT ELEMENTARY PTC MEETING
On Tuesday, January 12th at 9:30 AM, Superintendent Dr. Luizzi will present the New Canaan Public Schools Budget for 2021-22, provide a covid update and discuss new Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives. Following the presentation, Dr. Luizzi will answer questions from the parent community.
VIRTUAL VARIETY SHOW – REGISTRATION DEADLINE EXTENDED!
Calling all 3rd and 4th graders, don’t miss your chance to be the stars of the show! The annual variety show is going virtual for 2021 on Thursday, February 4th! Click HERE to review the new guidelines and to register. The registration deadline has been extended to Thursday January 14th, and the deadline to submit your video is Thursday, January 28th. TRANSITION TO KINDERGARTEN
All incoming parents from East, South and West are welcome! Please join us on Thursday, January 14th at 9:30 AM for a virtual presentation about preparation for kindergarten which will include conversations on social, emotional, and developmental milestones. Bring your questions! Please pre-register your child(ren) to assure the appropriate number of kindergarten classes for 2021-22. (Snow Date: Friday, January 15th.)
3RD AND 4TH GRADE VIRTUAL CODING CLUB
Mr. McLeod, East School's ICT teacher, has started a new virtual coding club for all 3rd and 4th graders who are interested in learning to code. This class includes a weekly emailed challenge that the students receive from Mr. McLeod, to be completed by the following week. Students learn the basics of coding, starting with Scratch, and will delve deeper into the world of coding via Python. To learn more about this exciting new opportunity, click here! NEW CANAAN LIBRARY - THE MYSTERIOUS ZOOM ART SOCIETY
In Trenton Lee Stewart’s Mysterious Benedict Society books, children enroll to tackle a series of missions that only the most resourceful and creative children could complete. Join us on Zoom on Wednesday January 20th at 4:15 PM for a monthly mystery art project. Pickup a kit from the library with the supplies needed to complete your secret art mission and we’ll work it out together during our virtual class time. We will start each meeting with a riddle or puzzle needed to unlock the secret project. For 2nd-5th grades. Register by January 15th to pickup a supply kit from the library! Kits will be available for pickup January 11th-20th. In addition to the supplies in the kits, you will need markers, scissors and a gluestick for this month’s project.
