NATIONAL BOOTLEGGER'S DAY

National Bootlegger's Day on January 17th recognizes an era when bootleggers became legendary.

Templeton Rye Whiskey shares its January 17th birthday with bootlegger Al Capone and the son of another bootlegger, Meryl Kerkhoff.

During the 1800s, the term bootlegger came into use in the Midwest. The word described the act of concealing flasks of liquor in a boot top when going to trade with Native Americans. The term found its permanent place in the American vocabulary when Congress passed the Eighteenth Amendment prohibiting the manufacture, transportation, and sale of alcohol in 1920.

Despite now being illegal, thirsty Americans still had a demand for liquor. So while some distilleries switched their production to something legal, others started bootlegging.

Bootleggers helped fill the demand by smuggling various brews from Canada and Mexico and later distilling their liquor in backwoods and secluded areas. Finally, they brought their loot back to sell to speakeasies, individuals, and other establishments.

Other terms, such as rum-runner and moonshiner, became popular during this time as well.

The legend of bootlegging grew to mythological qualities. The Mafia arose out of the illegal and coordinated activities of bootlegging. Glamour, danger, and mystery surround storied names like Al Capone, Lucky Luciano, Alphonse Kerkhoff, and Bugs Moran.

In 1933, Congress ratified the 21st Amendment repealing Prohibition and the "noble experiment."

GW Fins Restaurant

New Orleans shines brightest in moments of despair. We know there’s no way to get through hardship without coming together - that is a part of who we are. We are a city truly defined by community.

As we continue to hold the victims and their families of the New Year’s Day Bourbon Street tragedy in our hearts, we are proud to partner with the Louisiana Restaurant Association’s Fleur du Coeur: A Culinary Tribute.

From January 13-19, 2025, please join us and other French Quarter restaurants and bars in celebrating the vibrant culinary traditions of New Orleans while supporting the New Orleans New Year’s Day Tragedy Fund.

At GW Fins, all proceeds from the sales of one of our signature dishes, Lobster Dumplings, will be donated directly to the fund, which serves as a resource to provide assistance to the families of those whose lives were taken and those seriously injured or impacted by the tragedy.

Meteorologist Zack Fradella

BARNEY BLAST - It’s called a Barney Blast for how it looks on weather modeling. Frigid cold is coming straight from the North Pole down the Plains and to the Gulf Coast starting Monday. Be ready for freezing conditions next week that will likely bust pipes and create dangerous wind chills. More details as this event gets closer!

From Meteorologist Zack Fradella

SNOW POTENTIAL INCREASING - yes, I said the S word!

All it took was a little doubt from me this morning and we are now seeing models come into agreement.

A couple notes, don’t tell the kids yet, I can still break their hearts in the end. I’m only a few weeks away from fatherhood, I don’t want this hanging over my head.

Snow is HARD to forecast so a lot needs to come together for next Tuesday to happen.

We will take it one day at a time from here on out.

The potential is there, it’s high enough to give confidence to say the S word, we will leave it at that. This could be a few flakes or a full blown snowstorm for South LA.

We are calling on our community to temporarily foster a shelter dog before frigid temperatures hit our area Tuesday night and through the week!!

While the dogs have an inside area that can be enclosed during freezing temperatures, our building is still 70+ years old and of substandard condition making it difficult to keep the runs warm the entire night. This temperature drop will be significant and the lowest we have seen in quite some time so getting the dogs out of the shelter and into safety is our top priority!!!

**Our shelter cats are in better housing suited for the cold, but they too are available to take home temporarily.

Visit the shelter tomorrow (Saturday), January 18th, between 9 AM and 2 PM or Monday, January 20th 9 AM - 4 PM. Our dedicated staff and volunteers will be on-site to assist you in finding the perfect furry guest for your family.

Our goal is to ensure 100% of the animals find warmth and love in temporary homes. We provide all necessary supplies, including food and kennels, at no cost to you.

Your support is crucial – thank you in advance!!!

City of New Orleans officials say Mardi Gras parades this year will remain on their usual routes, despite earlier talk of moving them all to the Uptown route.

According to our partners at NOLA.com, New Orleans Chief Administrative Officer Gilbert Montaño said moving all parades to St. Charles Ave. was considered in the wake of the New Year's Day terrorist mass-murder on Bourbon St., but ultimately, it was decided that doing so would not make a significant difference in safety.

Parades such as Endymion, which is the only krewe left on the traditional Mid City route; NOMTOC, which parades in Algiers; and Thoth and Zulu, which have unique starting points before reaching St. Charles, will remain on their traditional routes.

Mardi Gras 2025 has, for the first time, a level one Special Event Assessment Rating. That's a designation from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security that brings the highest level of federal cooperation. It is the same security assessment the Super Bowl has received ever since the terror attacks of September 11, 2001.

The first Super Bowl played after 9/11 was Super Bowl XXXVI, at the Superdome.

Regift Your Christmas Trees to the Wetlands: Participate in the Annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program!

This year, the City added expanded dates and several new drop-off sites on the East Bank and West Bank to make it easier for residents to recycle their trees. Here’s when and how to participate:

City of New Orleans Extends Opportunities to Recycle Christmas Trees Through Friday, January 17

NEW ORLEANS – The City of New Orleans today announce the extension of Christmas tree collections. Residents are encouraged to call 3-1-1 to request a Christmas tree pickup through Friday, Jan. 17 if their tree was not collected this week. Requests can also be made by visiting https://nola311.org/.

After the 3-1-1 request is made, residents should immediately place their tree on the curb in a position that is easy for the contractor to retrieve it. Residents should also leave the trees in place until they are removed, as the contractor’s route may vary.

Trees cannot be flocked or have remnants of tinsel. Lighting and all ornamentation must be removed before recycling pick up. Residents should also try to remove plastic bases from their trees. However, wooden bases are acceptable.

The program is coordinated by the City of New Orleans Office of Resilience and Sustainability (ORS) and the Department of Sanitation, in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Louisiana Army National Guard (LANG).

The trees will be sorted, bundled and airlifted by helicopter to be dropped off in the spring in targeted sections of the Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge. The project benefits the City of New Orleans and surrounding coastal environment while also providing valuable training hours for pilots and crewmembers of the 1st Assault Helicopter Battalion, 244th Aviation Regiment.

Friday Night Wine School - Rhonerama Part II, the Villages and Crus of the Southern Rhone

Fri Jan 17, 2025 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM CST Swirl, 70119

Join us for our attendance-limited, signup-only Friday night tasting! Tastings are held on the back patio with a max of 12 people per time slot.

"Every 13 seconds, a bottle of Rhône Valley AOC wine is enjoyed somewhere in the world."

The Rhône wine region, one of the most ancient wine-growing areas, stretches along the Rhône River to the Mediterranean Sea in the southern part of France. Geologically speaking, it was created during the last ice age as the Rhône Glacier carved its way south from the Swiss Alps through what is now France. Today, the Rhône River meanders southward on this path for over 500 miles, nourishing the region and shaping its landscape and character.

The region is one of the most celebrated and popular wine regions in the world. From the Northern Rhône, where the rugged hills of Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage produce elegant and age-worthy Syrah wines, to the sun-drenched vineyards of the Southern Rhône, where blends of Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Syrah define powerful reds like those of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the Rhône offers an incredible diversity of styles and flavors. Each subregion of the valley showcases its unique terroir, shaped by ancient soils, rolling hills, and a climate that ranges from cool, alpine influences in the north to the warm Mediterranean breeze in the south.

The Southern Rhône is famed for its bold, structured reds and complex blends that have made the valley a powerhouse of French winemaking. Whether you're tasting wines from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, or the lesser-known but equally intriguing Luberon or Ventoux, you’ll be treated to a true reflection of the land, where the mountains meet the Mediterranean, and each glass of wine tells a story of the people, places, and centuries-old practices that have shaped this exceptional region.

As with all wine regions in France, the Rhone has a hierarchical system of qualifying quality. From the ripe and welcoming Cotes du Rhone AOC to the more structured Cotes du Rhone Villages and finally, the famous Cru wines, exploring the region can be a complicated but delicious journey. In our "Rhonerama" series, we'll break down the AOC systems requirements as we taste very distinct wines from the area.

The Villages and Crus are the heart of the region such as the famous AOC's of Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Tavel, Lirac, Rasteau, Cairanne, Beaumes de Venise and Vinsobres. Join Nicole Todaro as we take a road trip around the area, tasting the similarities and differences of these captivating wines.

-All ticket sales are final.

-We will hold our tastings outside on the patio from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM on Fridays weather permitting, if it rains we move inside to the back of the shop.

-Your $5 tasting fee is refunded when you purchase a bottle of wine from the tasting. Limit 1 refund per bottle per customer.

-Please arrive 5 minutes early for your time slot, as we may not be able to move you to another spot.

-No waiting in line for your taste of wine in a plastic cup and snippet of info. During your time slot, you will have the presenter's undivided attention as you learn about and taste the wines from Riedel glassware.

-When your tasting is over, you can browse and shop or enjoy a glass or bottle at our indoor and outdoor tables.

NATIONAL HOT BUTTERED RUM DAY

On January 17th, National Hot Buttered Rum Day warms us up during mid-January.

Depending on where you are on this January day, it may be warm, chilly, cold, or frigid. Enjoying a hot buttered rum drink would sure be a good way to warm up if you are in one of the latter three.

A mixed drink containing rum, butter, hot water or cider, sweetener, and spices (typically cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves),hot buttered rum is especially favored during the fall and winter months and is sometimes associated with the holiday season.

In the United States, hot buttered rum’s history dates back to the colonial days. It was in the 1650s when Jamaica began importing molasses to Colonial America. New England started opening distilleries where the colonists then began adding distilled rum to hot beverages such as toddies and nogs, creating hot buttered rum, eggnog and others.

Hot buttered rum is often made by blending a buttered rum batter with dark rum. Dark rum is a rum that has been barrel-aged for an extended length of time to retain a more intense molasses flavor. Those that prefer a milder or a spicier taste may choose the option of using light rum or spiced rum mixed with the batter.

What does "tatterdemalion" mean?

Raggedly dressed person

Soldier

tatterdemalion

/tætə(r)dɪˈmeɪliən/

Definition: A person who is raggedly dressed or appears in a state of disarray, often characterized by tattered clothing.

Origin: The term originates from the late 17th century, combining "tatter," meaning torn or ragged, and "demalion," which is a variant of "demalion," derived from the French word "démal" meaning rag or tatters.

Example: The streets were filled with tatterdemalions, each wearing clothes that hung loosely and bore the marks of many days without care.

A "tatterdemalion" refers to a raggedly dressed person, often indicating someone who is disheveled or in a state of neglect. This term evokes images of individuals wearing mismatched, torn, or dirty clothing, suggesting a lifestyle that may be transient or impoverished. A tatterdemalion might be seen wandering the streets, their attire telling a story of hardship or forgotten elegance. The word paints a vivid picture of someone who does not conform to societal standards of dress, instead embracing a unique, albeit unkempt, appearance. In essence, a tatterdemalion embodies the spirit of resilience amid adversity through their distinctive style.

Beautification Project

There is a lot to unpack in this unattributed photograph of Canal Street from November 1929. Just to the left of center in the background is the former Pickwick Club with its iconic turret tower on the corner of Carondelet Street.

The property was originally owned by the Heine brothers from Paris who later sold the building to Bob Rivers in 1894. He converted it into a hotel, the Hotel Pickwick. It was demolished in 1948 to make way for the art deco concrete structure that housed the Gus Mayer specialty store. The building still stands although it is now a CVS pharmacy.

The small white building to the right of the Pickwick Club is the Boston Club, and to the right of that is the former Machecha Building which was converted into Godchaux’s department store as the sign on the side of the building indicates.

The neutral ground and streetcar tracks appear to be undergoing a significant amount of work judging by the surveyor’s tripod and theodolite seen in the lower right corner of the image and the piles of debris behind it.

We look forward to seeing you at A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM!!

Adapted and co-directed by John Wesley and Courtney Calato Lee, in conjunction with the Louisiana Shakespeare Company, "A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is a whimsical comedy by William Shakespeare that intertwines the lives of humans and fairies. Set in a forest near Athens, the play follows four young lovers and a group of amateur actors who become entangled in the magical mischief of the fairy realm. The mischievous Puck, under the orders of Oberon, the fairy king, uses a love potion that causes chaos and comic confusion among the characters. Themes of love, transformation, and the interplay between reality and fantasy are explored through witty dialogue and enchanting scenes. The play ultimately concludes with harmony restored and multiple marriages, celebrating the joyful complexity of love and imagination.

LSU Women's Basketball...

BATON ROUGE, La. – One point separated the teams going into the fourth quarter Monday night in the PMAC, but No. 5 LSU (19-0, 4-0 SEC) outlasted Vanderbilt (14-3, 1-3 SEC), 83-77, to remain undefeated headed into its bye.

Neither team created much separation in the game which featured seven ties and 13 lead changes. LSU’s final six point edge was the largest lead by either team Monday night.

“They all just care about winning, and we just made plays,” said Coach Kim Mulkey whose team is now 5-0 in games decided by 10 points or less. “We’re going to make them sometimes and sometimes we’re not. They’re not afraid of the moment.”

“I think it is just togetherness,” Flau’Jae Johnson explained about winning numerous tight games. “I feel like we really come together in those moments when the spotlight is big or we are in a tight game, we just know how to come together.”

The Tigers are off until Sunday when they will face Florida in Gainesville at noon CT on the SEC Network.

NEW ORLEANS – Due to severe temperatures predicted by the National Weather Service, the City of New Orleans today announced that the 15th Annual R.E.A.L. March in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. scheduled for Monday, Jan.20, has been canceled.

Out of an abundance of caution and safety concerns, the City's public safety and health leaders have recommended the cancelation of marches in Orleans Parish. That includes all marching bands, auxiliary groups, and parade vehicles. City leaders will host a small recognition at the MLK monument on S. Claiborne Ave. on Monday, Jan. 20 at 10 a.m.

Join the award-winning (1st place, baby!) NOLA Jitterbugs for a 6-week series with live music in the last class!

Our live music classes with local musicians and culture bearers, as well as our overall emphasis on music appreciation is what makes our lessons stand out among the rest!

Starts at The Contemporary Arts Center!

6-7pm Intro to Swing

For total beginners to swing dancing or dancing of any kind. Also for those looking to refresh their basics and learn some ragtime dances. We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.

7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level

This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.

No partner required to take either of these classes. Come alone or with friends!

Comedy House New Orleans

The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)

CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)

609-610 Fulton St

New Orleans, LA 70130

Mon,January 13

8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

(Entry at 7:30 pm)

The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.

Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.

The list of performers? A total mystery.

The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.

How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.

When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.

Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

"A joyously mad evening of comic theater [...] The play ends and you ask yourself, 'Where do we go from here?' Perhaps that's just the

political question we all need to be asked

-James Wilkinson, Boston Stage Notes

Timbuktu, USA offers a refreshingly absurd portrait of American systems of power. Originally written in the immediate aftermath of Donald Trump's first inauguration, the play tells the story of Kelly Kilkenny, a decorated career politican who formulates a devious plot to attain the ultimate seat of power – the American presidency. Will Kilkenny manage to claim what's rightfully hers, or will the men (and the monkey) in her life prevent her from claiming the highest seat in the land? More information, including cast and crew, is available at Intramural Theater's website.

Super Bowl LIX may happen more than three weeks before Fat Tuesday, but the host committee wants to make sure the city -- and the throngs of visitors in town for the NFL's championship game -- get the carnival experience.

The day before the game, February 8, there will be a Mardi Gras-style parade complete with elaborate floats, marching bands, and throws.

Our partners at NOLA.com report details of the parade are still being finalized, but float-builder Barry Kern says it will likely be a 20-float parade made up of signature floats from various krewes.

And because it is not an official carnival parade, corporate sponsors will also be a part of it.

Todd Graves, founder of Baton Rouge-based Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, will serve as grand marshal.

Rather than follow one of the traditional Mardi Gras routes, the Super Bowl parade will line up on Elysian Fields in the Marigny, parade up Decatur Street along the French Quarter, then take Tchoupitoulas St. to Poydras, turn up to St. Charles Ave., then proceed along St. Charles to St. Joseph St. just before reaching Harmony Circle.

Super Bowl LIX pre-game show features all New Orleans and Louisiana musicians

The NFL announced on Thanksgiving that the Super Bowl LIX pre-game telecast will spotlight singers and musicians from New Orleans and Louisiana.

Jon Batiste, who grew up in Kenner and attended St. Augustine High School and the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, will sing the national anthem in the Caesars Superdome ahead of kickoff on Feb. 9.

Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews, who grew up in Treme, will team up with contemporary Christian singer and Lafayette native Lauren Daigle to perform "America the Beautiful." They have previously made guest appearances with one another onstage and on recordings.

And contemporary R&B singer Ledisi, who was born and raised in New Orleans before moving to California, will perform "Lift Every Voice and Sing."

“We’re honored to work with this year’s pregame lineup to celebrate the rich musical legacy of New Orleans and the entire state,” said Seth Dudowsky, head of music at the NFL, in a news release. "The Super Bowl is a rare moment to unite fans around the world, and this year’s performers will bring the energy, soul and vibrant sounds of the region to a global stage, as we kickoff Super Bowl LIX with a celebration to remember.”

Just two days after Super Bowl LIX, Jefferson Parish will celebrate its 200th birthday on Feb. 11. Bicentennial festivities kicked off at the State of Jefferson address Tuesday with the unveiling of the official poster, depicting a pelican before the Mississippi River in vivid pink and blue hues. It is illustrated by Louisiana artist Becky Fos, known for designing the 2023 state "I Voted" sticker, modeled after the Louisiana state flag.

A limited supply of signed and numbered posters can be purchased for $150, with proceeds going toward the Jefferson Community Foundation.

The parish will celebrate the bicentennial on Feb. 11 with a Light the Night event, followed by a community-wide king cake party at Lakeside Mall on Feb. 15.

The following month, a bicentennial-themed Senior Expo will take place at the Alario Center on March 20, and a "Park to Park" 10K run will happen March 22 at Lafreniere Park.

Festivities for the parish's 200th birthday will come to a close June 14 with the Bicentennial Ball at Lakeside Mall, hosted by the Jefferson Community Foundation. Lee Sheng said she wanted parish events to involve the entire community and asked residents and local business owners to get involved.

"I want our bicentennial to feel like everybody's a part of it," Lee Sheng said in her address.
