NATIONAL DRINKING STRAW DAY

On January 3rd National Drinking Straw Day commemorates the date in 1888 that Marvin C. Stone received the patent for the paper drinking straw. Since then, a variety of drinking straws are used.

It is believed the Sumerians used the very first drinking straws for drinking beer. Archeologists speculate they used the straws to avoid the solid byproducts of fermentation that would have sunk to the bottom. The oldest drinking straw known to be in existence was found in a Sumerian tomb dated 3,000 B.C.E. This found straw was a gold tube inlaid with a precious blue stone.

The Argentines used a similar metallic device called a bombilla. Used for hundreds of years, the bombilla acted as both a straw and a sieve.

Today, manufacturers make a variety of reusable straws. From stainless steel and glass to bamboo and silicone, they not only save money and the environment, but they are also fun to use. They come in a variety of creative shapes and colors.

Regift Your Christmas Trees to the Wetlands: Participate in the Annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program!

NEW ORLEANS – The City of New Orleans today reminded residents of the annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program to restore our wetlands. For over 26 years, this program has contributed to the restoration of the Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge, while also preventing them from being placed in landfills. Thanks to residents who participate in the program each year, recycled trees have restored an area of marsh equal to approximately 200 football fields. The trees also create an important habitat for birds, fish, crabs, crawfish and shrimp.

This year, the City added expanded dates and several new drop-off sites on the East Bank and West Bank to make it easier for residents to recycle their trees. Here’s when and how to participate:

  •  through January 3 – Call 311 for curbside pickup via the “Christmas Tree” service request. A contractor will pick up the first 400 trees called in to 311
  • December 26 through January 5 - Drop your trees at these locations:
  • East Bank: Lafitte Greenway, 2930 Lafitte Ave.
  • West Bank: Bodenger Park, 3400 Kansas St.
  • January 6 through January 10 - Place your trees on the curb by 5 a.m. on your regular garbage pick-up day. A recycling truck will follow your regular garbage truck
  • Residents in the French Quarter and Downtown Development District should place their trees curbside before 4 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 9th only

Trees cannot be flocked or have remnants of tinsel, and all ornamentation and lighting should be removed before recycling pick up.

To learn more, go to nola.gov/ChristmasTreeRecycling

The Christmas season has come to a close, and you might be wondering what to do with your tree.

Jefferson Parish officials are reminding residents of its Christmas tree recycling program as residents get ready to ring in the new year.

According to the parish, residents in unincorporated Jefferson Parish and the Town of Jean Lafitte can bring real Christmas trees with no lights, garland, tinsel, ornaments, tree stands or plastic bags to 400 David Drive or 6440 Lapalco Blvd. from Jan. 4 through Jan. 14.

Parish officials also said residents can place their trees on their curbs on Wednesday, Jan. 8, to be collected on Jan. 9, 10 or 11.

Flocked, painted and artificial trees will not be collected.

Parish officials said the recycled trees will be used to build wave-dampening fences to reduce coastal erosion in the Barataria Basin.

Bring the whole family to this comedic rendition of all seven Harry Potter books reenacted in 70 hilarious minutes

Created by two-time Olivier Award–nominated BBC Television actors Daniel Clarkson and Jefferson Turner, and seen by over 1,000,000 Potter fans around the world, the show will cast a spell over the Jefferson Performing Arts Center from December 26 through January 5.

Selling out to crowds around the world, Potted Potter will have you flying off your seat (or broomstick) with laughter. The perfect show for muggles, witches and wizards of all ages, this production of the boy-who-lived’s story combines all seven books into 70 hilarious minutes. The cleverly curated show includes all of your favorite characters, perfect Potter props and even a live Quidditch match!

Starvox Touring and Potted Productions first introduced the fabulously funny show to North American audiences in Toronto in 2012, where it received rave reviews. Whether you’re team Gryffindor or don’t know the difference between a Death Eater and Dumbledore, this show is a seriously good time.

In aftermath of Bourbon Street attack, Notre Dame defeats Georgia in the Sugar Bowl

Notre Dame Fighting Irish linebacker Jack Kiser (24), left and Notre Dame Fighting Irish head coach Marcus Freeman hold the winning trophy after beating the Georgia Bulldogs 23-10 at the Allstate Sugar Bowl at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, La. Thursday, Jan. 2, 2025.(Staff photo by David Grunfeld, NOLA.com,

Before there were cheers, there was silence.

More than 58,000 stood together. Some wore green, others red. Most of them weren't from New Orleans and many of them never had been to the Superdome, let alone for the Sugar Bowl.

But they stood as one for the same purpose.

Around 3 a.m. on New Year's Day, less than 17 hours before the start of the College Football Playoff quarterfinal between Georgia and Notre Dame, a white pickup truck had careened through Bourbon Street with malicious intent. The suspected terrorist killed at least 14 people and injured dozens more.

Notre Dame defeated Georgia 23-10 less than 48 hours after the attack. When football became a secondary concern, the game was moved back to Thursday.

"First of all, you always have to understand that you have to pray for those that are affected and those that you don't even know are affected," Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman said before the game. "But what I thought about was the last 24 hours have been a reminder that life is short, but it's unpredictable."

With military personnel in the area, and following countless vehicle inspections from K-9 dogs, Georgia and Notre Dame fans stood together in silence before cheering together as one.

"USA! USA! USA!"

After the national anthem, more of the same.

"USA! USA! USA!"

"All of America stands with the people of New Orleans," President Joe Biden said on ESPN before the game started. "We pray for those killed and injured in yesterday's attack and we're grateful for those first responders who raced to save lives.

"I'm glad the game is back on for today. But I'm not surprised because the spirit of New Orleans can never be kept down. And that's also true of the spirit of America."

Finally, it was time for football.

Notre Dame's win on Thursday sends it to the College Football Playoff semifinals where it'll face Penn State in the Orange Bowl on Thursday. The winner of that matchup will face the victor of the Cotton Bowl between Texas and Ohio State for the national championship on Jan. 20 in Atlanta.

Bringing in 2025...

Whether you're excited about the New Year or anxious about what it's going to bring, one thing is certain, you're going to need some bubbles.  And it's no secret as to just how much we love sparkling wine here at Swirl – in fact, we’ve dedicated an entire wall of the shop to over 50 labels highlighting different styles, countries and price ranges. While our true love will always be grower Champagnes, drinking bubbles from other regions is the perfect way to expand our knowledge and palates. From Pet Nats to Cremants, Cap Classique to Cave and Champagne, we have something for everyone. So stop by today and tomorrow and let us help you find the perfect bottle. We are open today from 11-8 and tomorrow from 11 to 6 and then closed for the 1st and 2nd. We'll be open normal hours on Friday with a fabulous tasting of South African cool climate wines.

friday night wine schools

For those who haven't been, we take a different approach to our public wine tastings. We like them to be educational, helping you become a more informed shopper and consumer. But educational does not mean stuffy, we have a lot of fun and drink really good wine, always...so please join us in the new year as we continue this trend of interesting wines and creative themes on the patio.

Drama & Intrigue, Exploring the Cool Climate Zones of South Africa - This week we are continuing to support the growing market of South African wines in New Orleans with a tasting lead by Suzaan Laing, native of Cape Town and owner of South to South Wine Imports.  At Latitude 34 Degrees South, and a Mediterranean climate of dry, sunny summers and rainy winters, South Africa’s Winelands are not inherently considered cool climate zones. Yet the region has diverse and unique geographic influences that create pockets of specific microclimates where colder climate French varietals thrive and produce high-quality wines with fresh acidity and complex flavors.

This Friday, we'll take you on a tour of those cool climate zones like Cape Agulhas where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet violently with strong icy winds and ocean spray; Durbanville where the Cape Doctor winds cool the misty ocean-facing slopes; Simonsberg and the Ceres Plateau where high-lying, dramatic mountain ranges produce wines at elevations of up to 960 meters; Elgin where all of three of the influences come together, making for a particularly cool and distinct wine region. We'll taste the wines from these areas and discuss how the combination of these forces creates microclimates that are very different from the rest of the Cape Winelands and how they affect the wine.

Join Suzaan as she leads this tasting of wines that showcase what South Africa’s cool climate regions are about – the high acidity, lower alcohol, crisp, spicy, herbaceous wines that are products of this unique combination of icy maritime influence, cold winds, sheer elevation and ample sunlight. We have 10 spots remaining, you can get your tickets here:  Drama and Intrigue, Exploring the Cool Climate Zones of South Africa

The Jump Hounds

The Jump Hounds is a New Orleans-based sextet that specializes in ‘jump’, the jazz-based rhythm and blues that bridged the gap between swing and rock & roll. To keep this often-overlooked style of music alive, the band plays a mix of Jump Era classics and original compositions within the idiom. The result is a repertoire that balances energetic up-tempo numbers, slow blues, and cozy mid-tempo swingers. This breadth of material makes for dynamic live shows that are tailored to the audience.

What does "bombastic" mean?

Simple

Pompous

Quiet

Calm

bombastic

/bɑmˈbæs.tɪk/

Definition: Characterized by pompous or inflated language; overly rhetorical and lacking in substance.

Origin: Late Middle English, from the word "bombast," meaning cotton or padding, which metaphorically referred to speech that is inflated or extravagant.

Example: The politician's bombastic speech failed to resonate with the audience, as it was filled with grandiose claims but little real substance.

Pompous is an apt synonym for "bombastic," capturing the essence of language that is characterized by excessive pride or self-importance. When someone uses bombastic language, they often employ grandiose words and elaborate phrases that may sound impressive but lack genuine meaning or clarity. This style of communication can alienate listeners, as it tends to overshadow the actual message with unnecessary flair. In essence, bombastic speech tries to impress rather than inform, which ultimately renders it ineffective and often ridiculed.

To assist the families of those whose lives were taken and those seriously injured or impacted by the tragedy, the Greater New Orleans Foundation, at the request of New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell and in partnership with other community leaders, has launched the New Orleans New Year’s Day Tragedy Fund.

LSU Women's Basketball...

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – No. 6 LSU (16-0, 1-0 SEC) opened SEC play with a resounding 98-64 win at Arkansas (7-9, 0-1 SEC) Thursday night in Bud Walton Arena.

“I could tell quickly that we were clicking on all cylinders,” Coach Kim Mulkey said. “A lot of that had to do with our transition offense and long rebounds that gave everyone the green light down the court.”

Aneesah Morrow earned her 14th double-double of the season with an 11 point, 10 rebound showing. It was also her 88th career double-double, tied for the fourth most in NCAA DI history.

Flau’jae Johnson logged her 4th double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Kailyn Gilbert posted 16 points on 7-12 shooting in 18 minutes of action and Mikaylah Williams scored 14 points and tacked on 2 rebounds and 1 steal.

Last-Tear Poa was effective too, going 3-4 for her first threes of the season and scoring 9 points with 6 assists. Jersey Wolfenbarger, going up against her former team, scored 8 points with 5 rebounds. LSU was proactive throughout its whole roster Thursday night as all 12 players who were available scored.

NATIONAL CHOCOLATE COVERED CHERRY DAY

January 3 spotlights National Chocolate Covered Cherry Day and a favorite during many holidays. Furthermore, the National Confectioners Association has been known to recognize this day as an annual event.

Chocolate-covered cherry lovers know how impossible it is to eat just one of these candies. Candy makers combine these two favorite flavors into one delicious treat and it turns into something irresistible. They also often make the candy with a sweet liquid center and in some cases a liqueur filling.

Chocolate covered cherries are also chocolate cordials. They can be either store-bought or homemade. There are many recipes that mimic the flavor of this well-loved candy. Either way, they are known to many as a mid-winter pick-me-up.

During the 1700s in England, cherries were enclosed in chocolate with a little kirsch (cordial) liqueur. After finding their way to the United States, Americans began delighting in the little bit of alcoholic cordial surrounding the fruit dipped in chocolate. Although originally made with the liqueur, cordials, or chocolate-covered cherries are more commonly made with a sugar syrup flavored with cherries. The pitted cherries have been cooked in sugar syrup and jarred.

11 Memorable Movie Lines That Echo Through Time

1"Here's looking at you, kid."

Credit: Warner Bros. Pictures

Movie: Casablanca (1942)

Casablanca, a cinematic masterpiece that has stood the test of time, gifted audiences with a timeless gem—the poignant line delivered by the incomparable Humphrey Bogart in his role as Rick Blaine. The epitome of cool sophistication in his era, Bogart condensed the sentiment of parting ways with a loved one through the restrained but deeply emotional delivery of this simple line.

2"May the Force be with you."

Credit: Venti Views

Movie: Star Wars (1977)

A phrase that needs no introduction, the blessing of good fortune often said by Jedi knights has become sort of a secret handshake for fans of the epic sci-fi saga. It's so popular that May 4th is known worldwide as Star Wars Day, thanks to the playful pun "May the Fourth be with you." This catchy phrase isn't just a nod to the movies; it's a fun way for fans to come together and celebrate their love for the Star Wars saga.

3"There's no place like home."

Credit: CBS Television Network, Public domain

Movie: The Wizard of Oz (1939)

Dorothy's touching adventure in the technicolor wonderland of Oz holds a universal truth. As Judy Garland clicks her ruby slippers and repeats the magical phrase, the audience has a moment of realization. Home was always there, close to the heart, because it isn’t really a place but an unbreakable connection with our own center of gravity, woven with love and belonging. As Dorothy embraces the familiar landscape of Kansas, we can finally agree that, indeed, there’s no place like home.

4"Here's Johnny!"

Credit: Luis Villasmil

Movie: The Shining (1980)

Stanley Kubrick's psychological horror masterpiece delivered this bone-chilling line through Jack Nicholson's deranged character, Jack Torrance. Forever etched in horror lore, this phrase is an auditory gateway to the madness that lurks within the Overlook Hotel. Interestingly, the line is actually a reference to the introduction used by Johnny Carson, a legendary American television host, on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.

5"To infinity and beyond!"

Credit: Brian McGowan

Movie: Toy Story (1995)

Buzz Lightyear's catchphrase, voiced by Tim Allen, soared beyond the confines of Andy's room, capturing the imagination of children and adults alike. While Buzz proudly considers it his own signature line, we later discover that the catchphrase isn't exclusive to Andy's Buzz alone. A legion of Buzz Lightyear toys, when wound up, mechanically repeat the same quote.

6"I feel the need... the need for speed."

Credit: Peter Pryharski

Movie: Top Gun (1986)

Tom Cruise's Maverick catapulted this line into the annals of pop culture, embodying the adrenaline-fueled rush of aerial combat. With a mix of bravado and thrill, the quote became unsurprisingly popular among racing pilots and fans of extreme sports, while also solidifying itself as a rallying banner for anyone willing to push boundaries and embrace the exhilaration of life.

7"You talkin' to me?"

Credit: Mike Tsitas

Movie: Taxi Driver (1976)

Robert De Niro's unforgettable portrayal of Travis Bickle brought forth this originally ad-libbed line that echoes the restless and solitary existence of a man dwelling on society's fringes. With the mirror as his sole companion (and imaginary adversary), the quote is remembered fondly for its theatrical boastfulness.

It's not exactly clear where De Niro got his inspiration from. A popular theory points toward the 1953 western film Shane, in which the protagonist utters a very similar line.

8"Why so serious?"

Credit: Serge Kutuzov

Movie: The Dark Knight (2008)

One of Heath Ledger's final roles before his untimely death gifted us with a hauntingly unforgettable portrayal of the Joker—one of Batman's most iconic arch-enemies—that remains ingrained in the minds of moviegoers, setting the bar high on the character's cinematic legacy. Posed as an unhinged inquiry into the very nature of chaos, the "Why so serious?" line serves as a provocative foundation for The Dark Knight's exploration of the human psyche.

9"Life is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you're gonna get."

Credit: Clint McKoy

Movie: Forrest Gump (1994)

Tom Hanks's endearing portrayal of Forrest Gump gifted us this deceptively simple yet profound observation. A metaphor for life's unpredictability, voiced by a character whose own journey was marked by unexpected twists, this line is a good reminder to savor each moment as if it were a unique confection in the grand chocolate box of existence.

10"I'll be back."

Credit: Daniel Juřena

Movie: The Terminator (1984)

Arnold Schwarzenegger's iconic "I'll be back" from The Terminator has long transcended the boundaries of its genre. The mechanical, menacing line encapsulates the unstoppable will that is the Terminator. Like many of these, the line has taken on a life of its own and became strongly associated with Schwarzenegger’s imposing persona. The line has been relentlessly parodied in hundreds of films, and the actor himself has reprised it many times in different movies.

11"You're gonna need a bigger boat."

Credit: Laura College

Movie: Jaws (1975)

In Spielberg's legendary summer blockbuster, this superficially humorous and almost casual line marks a crucial turning point in the movie. As the colossal shark comes into view, it becomes evident that the thrilling rollercoaster of terror that is Jaws has just commenced. Surprisingly, the line was not part of the original script, and it only emerged as a recurring on-set joke on the constant challenges faced by the production.

She was teaching at the Clarke School for the Deaf when in 1904 she met and later married Calvin Coolidge. While in the White House, she continued to work on behalf of the school as well as the Red Cross.

Gordon Moore - 1929

In 1968, the American engineer co-founded Intel Corporation along with Robert Noyce.

The 900-block of Poydras Street taken by photographer Charles L. Franck of his store/studio. His business is flanked on the left by the Southern Sunroc Company, dealers in electric water heaters and on the right by the Gulf Fish & Oyster Company and Bill’s Hamburger Place on the far right.

Charles L. Franck was born in New Orleans in 1877 and developed a passion for photography which he fueled while working as a messenger for the American Express Company as he practiced during his travels through the Mississippi Valley. He opened his first studio in 1905 at 409 Baronne Street and during his career photographed a remarkable variety of subjects – from real estate to accident victims at the port, from weddings to Mardi Gras – Franck was in demand. He sold his business in 1955 to Alfred Bertacci.

All of these buildings were demolished to make way for the former Louisiana Land & Exploration (LL&E) Building, now the 909 Poydras Building.

There was a time when filling up your car cost only 15 cents per gallon, a stark contrast to today’s fluctuating gas prices. In the mid-20th century, especially during the 1940s and 1950s, gas was remarkably affordable, even during periods of economic growth and after World War II. The low cost of gasoline was a reflection of the booming American economy, where car ownership was on the rise, and driving was becoming a popular part of everyday life. For many families, taking road trips or simply running errands in the car was a regular and accessible activity, thanks to the affordable prices at the pump.

The 15-cent gas price was also an indicator of the economic realities of the time. With oil being abundant and production costs relatively low, gas stations were able to offer fuel at these incredibly low prices. For many people, a trip to the gas station didn’t require the careful budgeting it often does today, and the idea of filling up a tank without worrying about the expense was an everyday luxury. This time period also saw the rise of iconic American cars, like the Chevrolet and Ford, which became symbols of freedom and mobility for the growing middle class.

Looking back at the 15-cent per gallon days can serve as a reminder of how much the world has changed in terms of both fuel prices and the broader global economy. As fuel prices soared in the latter half of the 20th century and into the 21st century, the days of inexpensive gasoline seemed like a distant memory. Still, for those who remember it, the image of the 15-cent gas pump represents a simpler, more affordable time when driving across the country was just as much about adventure as it was about getting from point A to point B.

In 1876, the arm and torch of the Statue of Liberty were displayed at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition to help raise funds for its pedestal. At that time, the statue was still under construction in France, and a significant portion of the funding needed for the pedestal in New York was still missing. The idea of showcasing the statue's arm and torch at the Exposition was a strategic move to capture the public's interest and inspire donations for the completion of the monumental project.

The Centennial Exposition, held to celebrate America's 100th anniversary, provided the perfect platform to display the statue’s components. Visitors to the exposition were able to see the scale and grandeur of the statue, and many were impressed by its size and symbolism. The arm and torch, although not the full statue, still conveyed the message of freedom and hope, rallying people to contribute to the cause.

Thanks to the funds raised through the Exposition, the pedestal was eventually completed, and the full Statue of Liberty was erected in New York Harbor in 1886. This early display in Philadelphia was a pivotal moment in the statue’s history, helping ensure its completion and securing its place as an enduring symbol of freedom and democracy.

The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.

Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.

The list of performers? A total mystery.

The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.

How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.

When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.

Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

Parade Route

17th Annual Joan of Arc Procession

MONDAY January 6, 2025, 8 p.m.

REVISED ROUTE AND LATER START TIME THIS YEAR

Joyeux Anniversaire, Jeanne d’Arc!

Celebrating St. Joan of Arc’s birthday and Twelfth Night, this annual walking procession is a medieval-themed theatrical procession, inspired by Joan’s time in 1400s France. Joan of Arc liberated the citizens of Orleans, France, from a British siege in her first victory in 1429—resulting in her moniker “The Maid of Orleans.” Our procession honors our own unofficial patron saint, The Maid of New Orleans: the beloved golden French Quarter statue, a gift to the City of New Orleans from France in the 1950s, and our French history and heritage. It’s a short, family-friendly parade — quirky, whimsical and spiritual.

The procession starts on time at 8 sharp, makes a few pauses for a bit of medieval pageantry, and ends around 9:45 p.m. NOTE THAT THE ORDER OF THE STOPS HAS CHANGED, as the route will be “backwards” compared to previous years.

  • Starts at French Market Place and Barracks, left onto Decatur
  • A pause to sing Happy Birthday at the Joan of Arc statue as we pass it on the Decatur side;

Mayor's Office of Nighttime Economy and Health Department Announce Developing Series of Free Narcan and Stop the Bleed Trainings for Hospitality Workers

NEW ORLEANS – The Mayor's Office of Nighttime Economy, in collaboration with the Health Department, is excited to announce a developing series of Narcan and Stop the Bleed trainings to equip hospitality workers with critical, life-saving skills. These free trainings will provide participants with the knowledge to respond effectively to overdose incidents and severe injuries, helping to make the nightlife community safer. To maximize accessibility, trainings will be scheduled in neighborhoods across the city.

Narcan training sessions will include free Narcan for all participants, while Stop the Bleed training will cover essential skills for managing bleeding emergencies. As an extra incentive to participate, The Broadside will offer free movie tickets to a screening at the Broad Theater for the first 15 attendees at each of their hosted sessions.

Upcoming Training Schedule

  • Wednesday 1/8/2025 at 6 p.m. - Narcan Training at Sports Drink, 1042 Toledano Street

  • Monday 1/13/2025 at 3 p.m. - Stop the Bleed Training at The Broadside, 600 North Broad Street

"Bystanders hold the power to change the outcome of a crisis. Awareness and training can create a community of lifesavers,” said Summer Lander, Opioid Outreach and Education Coordinator at the New Orleans Health Department.

“Hospitality workers are on the front lines of our nightlife, and we’re committed to providing them with the resources they need to respond to emergencies,” said Julia Heath, Policy and Outreach Manager at the Mayor's Office of Nighttime Economy. “Through this training series, we’re empowering them with the essential skills and confidence needed to handle life-threatening situations.”

St. John Fools of Misrule Twelfth Night March

Date: Jan. 11

Location: Historic Downtown Covington

The St. John Fools of Misrule heralds the arrival of Carnival season on the Northshore with its 14th annual Feast of Fools and March, taking place Saturday, January 11, 2025. The "Fools" (men) and "Jewels" (women) of this marching krewe take to the streets of Covington on the Saturday closest to Twelfth Night, also known as King's Day or The Epiphany.

The St. John Fools of Misrule take their name from the historic St. John District in Covington through which they march each year, and the “Foolish Tradition” itself comes from an ancient English custom whereby men “clamored along the evening streets creating unruliness with cowbells and whips while delivering jeers and spankings to those caught on the street unaware.”

This procession through Covington's historic St. John District begins first with a members-only "Feast of Fools" at 4:00 p.m. at Seiler Bar and Columbia Street Tap Room & Grill (434 N. Columbia St.). Then, at 6:00 p.m., the beautifully costumed krewe marches from Seiler Bar to the Covington Trailhead to crown the "Lord of Misrule." The revelers, including flambeaux, a brass band and masked marchers in extravagant medieval attire, then set out to carouse through downtown Covington. Learn more at https://www.foolsofmisrule.org/

Super Bowl LIX may happen more than three weeks before Fat Tuesday, but the host committee wants to make sure the city -- and the throngs of visitors in town for the NFL's championship game -- get the carnival experience.

The day before the game, February 8, there will be a Mardi Gras-style parade complete with elaborate floats, marching bands, and throws.

Our partners at NOLA.com report details of the parade are still being finalized, but float-builder Barry Kern says it will likely be a 20-float parade made up of signature floats from various krewes.

And because it is not an official carnival parade, corporate sponsors will also be a part of it.

Todd Graves, founder of Baton Rouge-based Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, will serve as grand marshal.

Rather than follow one of the traditional Mardi Gras routes, the Super Bowl parade will line up on Elysian Fields in the Marigny, parade up Decatur Street along the French Quarter, then take Tchoupitoulas St. to Poydras, turn up to St. Charles Ave., then proceed along St. Charles to St. Joseph St. just before reaching Harmony Circle.

Super Bowl LIX pre-game show features all New Orleans and Louisiana musicians

The NFL announced on Thanksgiving that the Super Bowl LIX pre-game telecast will spotlight singers and musicians from New Orleans and Louisiana.

Jon Batiste, who grew up in Kenner and attended St. Augustine High School and the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, will sing the national anthem in the Caesars Superdome ahead of kickoff on Feb. 9.

Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews, who grew up in Treme, will team up with contemporary Christian singer and Lafayette native Lauren Daigle to perform "America the Beautiful." They have previously made guest appearances with one another onstage and on recordings.

And contemporary R&B singer Ledisi, who was born and raised in New Orleans before moving to California, will perform "Lift Every Voice and Sing."

“We’re honored to work with this year’s pregame lineup to celebrate the rich musical legacy of New Orleans and the entire state,” said Seth Dudowsky, head of music at the NFL, in a news release. "The Super Bowl is a rare moment to unite fans around the world, and this year’s performers will bring the energy, soul and vibrant sounds of the region to a global stage, as we kickoff Super Bowl LIX with a celebration to remember.”

Just two days after Super Bowl LIX, Jefferson Parish will celebrate its 200th birthday on Feb. 11. Bicentennial festivities kicked off at the State of Jefferson address Tuesday with the unveiling of the official poster, depicting a pelican before the Mississippi River in vivid pink and blue hues. It is illustrated by Louisiana artist Becky Fos, known for designing the 2023 state "I Voted" sticker, modeled after the Louisiana state flag.

A limited supply of signed and numbered posters can be purchased for $150, with proceeds going toward the Jefferson Community Foundation.

The parish will celebrate the bicentennial on Feb. 11 with a Light the Night event, followed by a community-wide king cake party at Lakeside Mall on Feb. 15.

The following month, a bicentennial-themed Senior Expo will take place at the Alario Center on March 20, and a "Park to Park" 10K run will happen March 22 at Lafreniere Park.

Festivities for the parish's 200th birthday will come to a close June 14 with the Bicentennial Ball at Lakeside Mall, hosted by the Jefferson Community Foundation. Lee Sheng said she wanted parish events to involve the entire community and asked residents and local business owners to get involved.

"I want our bicentennial to feel like everybody's a part of it," Lee Sheng said in her address.
