Thank You For Attending - Housing Community Meeting

This week, the City co-hosted a community meeting with the Affordable Housing Alternatives resident group ("AHA") at Carpenter Hall. The goal of the meeting was to continue the exploration of finding enough alternate sites for affordable housing in the Village to would allow the City to remove Sunset Center and Vista Lobos from the current Housing Element. Thank you to everyone who came out to participate in what turned out to be an educational and lively discussion. We look forward to seeing you at the September 10th City Council Meeting for an update on the progress of the City and AHA.

Construction to Start on the

City Hall Roof Replacement Project Next Week

Construction is set to start on Monday, August 26th on the City Hall Roof Replacement Project. City Hall's roof was last replaced in 1984 and is 15 years past its warranty. In mid-2023, this project was bid, but, with a low bid of $366,000, the bids were rejected. This year, the project was rebid, and the cost will be $183,000, exactly half the cost! Copper gutters will also be removed and replaced with conventional metal gutters as part of this capital improvement project.

City Hall will remain open during re-roofing so please stay alert and be aware when you enter and exit the building over the next several weeks. The parking lot south of City Hall will be closed for the contractor's use during this time.

Artist Workshop with Marie-Clare

Saturday, August 24 @ 11:00 a.m.

Sunset Cultural Center and the Carmel Public Library will host a coloring and mask-making workshop with local folk artist Marie-Clare on Saturday, August 24, 2024, from 11am-1pm on the Sunset Center Terrace. This is a FREE event. While the workshop is recommended for ages 3yr-11yr, all are welcome!

Marie-Clare Treseder Gorham, also known as Marie-Clare, is a folk artist heavily influenced by the ethos of the California Arts and Crafts movement and medieval themes. Her practice includes hand-painted textiles, amateur carpentry, and perhaps most notably the Carmel Shell mural on the façade wall of the Paloma Furnishings building on Mission and 6th in Carmel-by-the-Sea. Her work is shown throughout California, and her "dainty doodles" are often seen on apparel worn by her and her family.

After a short break kid's programs return to the Park Branch after Labor Day. We can't wait to see all of you!

Happy Friday

For whatever reason, I found myself in the same conversation with several people this week about the same topic - civility. More precisely, the downward trend of civility over the last few years in all levels of government. Perhaps it is the political climate in the Country, or perhaps there is something in the water, but either way, I am still fiercely of the belief that Carmelites have been, and continue to be above this trend here in the Village. I am always impressed with the number of people in our little slice of paradise who can come to a public meeting, disagree respectfully, and then see you on the street the next day and greet you with a genuine smile. Sure, there is going to be the rare person who chooses to act uncivilly, and maybe even throw out an 'F-bomb' in a meeting because they think that's how you make change. However, thanks to the shining character and civil hearts of the residents of this Village, those actors are in the vast minority, and do not damage our beautiful little democracy here in Carmel. So, on behalf of those who humbly serve the Village and its residents, thank you to all who show up, get involved, and speak your mind with civility!

Be kind to one another, and of course - Take Good Care

-Brandon
