CAR WEEK IS HERE!

Car Week Events in Carmel-by-the-Sea

The City of Carmel will be hosting four events during the week:

  • CONCOURS FOR A CAUSE, Tuesday, August 13 | 10am-2pm. Ocean Avenue between Junipero to Lincoln Streets. Discover a vintage voyage of classic cars paired with international cuisine, cultural celebrations, and local artists for an epic experience.

  • ASTONS ON THE AVENUE, Wednesday, August 14 | 10am-4pm. Ocean Avenue between Monte Verde and Dolores Streets. This event showcases a stunning lineup of locally owned Aston Martins, celebrating the legacy of craftsmanship and performance.

  • PRANCING PONIES ON OCEAN AVENUE, Thursday, August 15 | 10am-4pm Ocean Avenue between Junipero and Dolores Streets. The only all women’s car show where all car models can participate and is a fundraiser for Prancing Ponies Foundation “Creating Women Leaders One Girl at a Time.”

  • FERRARI OWNER CLUB – CONCOURSO CARMEL, Thursday, August 15 | 7am-4:30pm Ocean Avenue and Dolores Street. A festive atmosphere of Ferraris and Italian motorcycles on an expanded layout including four blocks with music, strolling mic, owner and guest interviews, plus awards presentations.

The maps below show what streets will be closed to through traffic on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

The downtown area will be closed to traffic begining at 12:01 am on Tuesday and Thursday mornings to accomodate event setup. Streets will be reopened as soon as it is safe to do so.

Monterey Salinas Transit (MST) has been notified of the street closures and will have temporary bus stops on the South West corner of Ocean & Junnipero at Carmel Plaza (the bus loading zone) and the East side of Junipero at Mountain View, in front of Carmel Presbyterian Church.

The Police Department and Public Works will be deploying traffic calming measures Wednesday through Sunday at 6:00 p.m. These measures include speed humps on upper Ocean Avenue (as you come down the hill) and directional cone patterns throughout the downtown area to divert traffic in specific locations.

Here's a helpful list of all the events around the Peninsual with their start and end times. A great resource to check if you are going to be traveling in a specific area next week.

Alert Monterey County isn't just a warning system you can sign up for natural disaster and storm notifiations, which we always highly recommend doing, but it can be used for large events on the Peninsula.

To receive Car Week specific emergency alerts text "CARWEEK" to 65513.

This Week in Public Works

Sidewalk Repairs and Car Week Preparation

Public Works repaired a walking pathway at the end of First Avenue near Camino Del Monte.

Gilbert and Beau in Public Works repaired the pavers on Mission Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues. The pavers had been raised due to tree roots.

To help the City prepare for Car Week, temporary fencing was carefully placed along the Ocean Avenue Medians to protect them from pedestrian crossings.

Staff also placed temporary speed bumps, vehicle stoppers, barricades and delineators to manage traffic during Car Week.

Replaced Ocean Avenue Bollard and Landscaping

Public Works replaced the Ocean Avenue bollard that was damaged by a bus adjacent to the World War I Memorial Arch.

Cindy Lloyd and her daughter planted new flowers (shown above) at the World War I Memorial Arch this week.

North San Antonio Avenue

Pedestrian Trail Project

The North San Antonio Ave walkway, located on the west side of San Antonio between Second and Fourth Avenues, was damaged by winter storms in early 2023. At the end of July, the City posted and is soliciting bids on the repair project that are due to City Hall at 2:00 pm August 292024. Below is a photo of the pre-bid conference and site tour held on Tuesday.

Sunset Cultural Center and the Carmel Public Library Host a Workshop with

Local Artist Marie-Clare

Sunset Cultural Center and the Carmel Public Library will host a coloring and mask-making workshop with local folk artist Marie-Clare on Saturday, August 24, 2024, from 11am-1pm on the Sunset Center Terrace. This is a FREE event. While the workshop is recommended for ages 3yr-11yr, all are welcome!

Marie-Clare Treseder Gorham, also known as Marie-Clare, is a folk artist heavily influenced by the ethos of the California Arts and Crafts movement and medieval themes. Her practice includes hand-painted textiles, amateur carpentry, and perhaps most notably the Carmel Shell mural on the façade wall of the Paloma Furnishings building on Mission and 6th in Carmel-by-the-Sea. Her work is shown throughout California, and her "dainty doodles" are often seen on apparel worn by her and her family.

Date: Saturday, August 24, 2024

Time: 11am-1pm

Location: Sunset Center, San Carlos St at Ninth Ave,

Tickets: FREE. RSVP requested, not required.

If Marie-Clare's work looks familiar, she is the artist whose mural is showcased on the wall at Mission & 6th.

Even the staff at the Main have gotten Car Week fever! Check out their car picks.

Due to Car Week events on Thursday, August 15, the farmers' market has been canceled. They will return on Thursday, August 22.

Stay tuned for details on this month's 3rd Thursday, August 22.

Upcoming Meetings:

Planning Commission - Wednesday, August 14 @ 4:00 p.m.

Many thanks to the staff in Community Activities, Public Works, Police, and many others for the monumental feat of preparing for Car Week 2024. Literally hundreds of hours goes into preparing, and then monitoring the week ahead. As emphasized in today's vlog, our primary concern about next week is public safety - hands down. And, as is tradition, the week will certainly have some unplanned curves and twists that will require addressing. Rest assured we are ready for both the planned and unplanned. Think good thoughts, and wish us the best.

Have a peaceful weekend and take good care. CR.
