The Marjorie Evans Gallery Presents:
René Romero Schuler: WOMAN
Schuler's artistic oeuvre stands as a powerful testament to the indomitable spirit of women throughout history. Through her evocative and emotionally charged creations, Schuler not only captures the resilience and strength inherent in the female experience but also serves as a visual chronicler of the often untold stories of women. Her work transcends mere representation, delving into the very essence of women's history, revealing layers of complexity, triumphs, and struggles. In each stroke and canvas, Schuler amplifies the voices of women, contributing to a broader dialogue that seeks to redefine and celebrate the profound impact of women on the tapestry of human history. Her art becomes a mirror reflecting the diverse narratives of women, inviting viewers to confront, appreciate, and ultimately champion the richness of their stories. Through the lens of René Romero Schuler's art, the history of women emerges not as a footnote but as an epic tale, deserving of acknowledgment, recognition, and remembrance.

A free public reception with René will be held on Wednesday, March 6, from 5-7 pm, as part of Sunset Cultural Center’s own Women’s Week (March 6-9).
An Evening with Lyle Lovett and His Acoustic Group Tuesday, March 12
A singer, composer and actor, Lyle Lovett has broadened the definition of American music in a career that spans 14 albums. Coupled with his gift for storytelling, the Texas-based musician fuses elements of country, swing, jazz, folk, gospel and blues in a convention-defying manner that breaks down barriers.

Whether touring as a 'Duo' or with his 'Acoustic Group' or his 'Large Band,' Lovett's live performances show not only the breadth of this Texas legend's deep talents, but also the diversity of his influences, making him one of the most compelling and captivating musicians in popular music.
Since his self-titled debut in 1986, Lyle Lovett has evolved into one of music's most vibrant and iconic performers. Among his many accolades, besides the four Grammy Awards, he was given the Americana Music Association's inaugural Trailblazer Award, and was named Texas State Musician.

GRAMMY-winning guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Christone “Kingfish” Ingram has quickly become the defining blues voice of his generation. From his hometown of Clarksdale, Mississippi to stages around the globe, the young blues star has already headlined multiple U.S. and European tours, and amazed fans in Australia, New Zealand, and India. Selected in summer 2022 to open for The Rolling Stones in London’s Hyde Park, Kingfish has also performed and toured with friends including Vampire Weekend, Jason Isbell, Steve Miller and Buddy Guy, a mentor of his, with whom he appeared on Austin City Limits.

Since he burst onto the scene in 2019, Ingram has been nominated for 10 Blues Music Awards and won them all. Rolling Stone declared, “Kingfish is one of the most exciting young guitarists in years, with a sound that encompasses B.B. King, Jimi Hendrix and Prince.” In September 2023, Kingfish released his jaw-dropping third album, Live In London. Recorded on June 6, 2023, in front of a sweaty, sold-out, standing-room-only crowd at the famous UK club, The Garage, Live In London is the guitar-driven live album Kingfish’s fans around the world have been clamoring for since they first watched him perform as a teenager on YouTube.

Shoreline and Beach Erosion Modeling and Coastal Hazard and Sea Level Rise Vulnerabilities Presentation

On February 15th, the Climate Committee received a presentation from the City’s consultants providing the preliminary findings of the Shoreline and Beach Erosion Exposure Modeling and the Coastal Hazard and Sea Level Rise Vulnerabilities. The PowerPoint presentation is available on the City’s Website. under: {Create a button for this link: https://ci.carmel.ca.us/climate-committee}

This presentation is also scheduled for the Forest and Beach Commission meeting on Thursday, March 14th at 2:30 pm in the City Council Chambers. The preliminary findings revealed significant long-term impacts to Carmel Beach and shoreline infrastructure without implementing adaptation strategies.
Tree Permits will soon have a new home!

The processing of all Tree Permits is shifting from the City Hall Planning and Building counter to the Public Works building in the coming weeks. Public Works is located on the east side of Junipero Street, 2 Southeast of Fourth Avenue. Stay tuned for more details!
New Tree Permit Form and improved pricing options:
  • You can now apply for a Tree Evaluation ($195) for up to 5 trees on your private property instead of paying the entire fee of a Pruning Permit ($255) or Removal Permit ($665).
  • If the Evaluation results show tree(s) need to be pruned or removed, you only pay the difference between the Evaluation fee and the corresponding permit you need (i.e. your Tree Evaluation payment is automatically applied toward the cost of the Pruning or Removal permit).
  • We condensed all 3 options into a single permit application form found on our website.

Submitting photos of the subject trees with your form is always helpful
Tree Cleanup Continues
Forestry crews continued to clean up fallen trees resulting from recent storms as pictured at Svendsgaard’d Inn on the corner of San Carlos and Fourth Avenue. The crew also trimmed a dangerous tree limb hanging on Lincoln between Eleventh and Twelfth Avenues. We are aware of many dozens of locations of remaining tree debris and ask for your continued patience as we finish removals of potential hazards and then pick up all the debris.
Rain Barrel Water Collection
You can find a very helpful guide "Slow it. Spread it. Sink it! A Homeowner's guide to Greening Stormwater Runoff" on the City's webstie.

Recycle your Batteries

It's #NationalBatteryDay, and three recent garbage truck fires in San Jose, California remind us of the dangers of improper disposal of batteries. Thankfully, the driver was able to exit the truck before he was injured or his truck destroyed. San Jose’s fire brigade responded right away and doused the truck and the "hot load" with water and extinguished the pile with sand.
ReGen Monterey averages one fire a week at our landfill and recycling plant. If we put batteries in our garbage or recycling carts, we are literally risking lives and property, along with the environment. Batteries are extremely flammable when dropped onto hard surfaces, driven over, banged, or compressed and shredded inside machines. In addition to fire, there’s a serious associated risk from the release of toxic chemicals such as fluoride gases.

Please protect our environment, workers, and property by properly disposing of batteries. You can drop them off for free at our Household Hazardous Waste facility, or local residents can simply put their used batteries in a plastic bag and place them on top of their recycling bin for pick-up on collection day. Thank you for your help on National Battery Day and every day.
