Beach Stair Update - Welcome Back, Sand!

Thanks to Mother Nature, we have seen a massive amount of sand return to the beach recently. Check out the pictures below to see the "before" and "after" of the sand returning at the three closed staircases.

Along with making more space for people to enjoy, this returning sand also provides the City an opportunity to explore short term fixes on the three (3) remaining beach stairs that would not have been possible when the sand was gone.

The process of soliciting bids to engineer and re-build these stairs on a more permanent basis still continues, but the hope is to get these last three stairs open in the short term as well.

Here is a brief summary of the actions that will be taking place over the next couple of weeks:

  • 9th Ave Stairs:
  • Next week, City Crews will be out on the beach pushing sand over the remainder of the boulders to make it safe for people at the bottom of the stairs.
  • Thanks to Mother Nature, the incredible amount of sand needed to cover the exposed boulders has mostly been moved naturally, allowing City Staff the ability to finish the job.

  • 10th Ave and 12th Ave Stairs:
  • Although there is still damage to both these wooden stairs, the returning sand has buried the footings once again, providing much needed stability to the overall structures
  • Over the next week, the City will work with a structural engineer to see if repairs can be done to the portions of the supports above the sand that would make the stairs safe and sound for the large volume of the daily beach visitors.
  • If the structural engineer clears the short-term repairs, City Staff will begin this work ASAP to get the stairs reopened.

This year, the following Carmel-by-the-Sea officers to elect are:

  • 1 Mayor – full term of 2 years
  • 2 Councilmembers – full terms of 4 years

Nomination Period

The nomination period runs from July 15th to August 9th, 2024, with an extended deadline to August 14th if an eligible incumbent does not file. To run for City Council, candidates must be at least 18 years old, residents of Carmel-by-the-Sea, and registered voters there when nomination papers are issued.

Nomination papers are issued by the City Clerk and an appointment is required. Contact the City Clerk if you are interested in running for office: 831-620-2016, or email nromero@ci.carmel.ca.us.

Obtaining nomination signatures:

Candidates need between 20 and 30 valid signatures from registered voters of Carmel-by-the-Sea on their nomination papers, which must include their name, signature, and physical address details (no P.O. boxes or “ditto” marks).

No voter may sign more than one nomination paper for the same office, and in the event the voter does so, that voter’s signature shall count only on the first nomination paper filed which contains the voter’s signature. Nomination papers subsequently filed and containing that voter’s signature shall be considered as though that signature does not appear thereon. Pease note: Each seat on the governing body is considered a separate office. A signer’s name will not be counted if they have already signed the maximum number of nomination papers for that office.
