When I arrived as your new minister, just over a year ago, you arranged many things to make me welcome. One of those gifts was the transition team that was put together to support and guide me while I got to know you and you got to know me.

Not all congregations and ministers are given this opportunity and that time of transition can be difficult and strained. The United Church recognized this need, and working with the Episcopal Church in the US, created a program to help congregations called United Fresh Start.

I had the opportunity to work through some of the program last year, thanks to Hamilton Conference. And earlier this month I took the training to become a Fresh Start facilitator.

It is an exciting program designed to strengthen the leadership skills of congregations and their ministers in any kind of transition. The material promotes greater awareness of the issues involved and an understanding of the dynamics of change, leadership, power and authority, habits and norms and 20 other topics.

A facilitator will meet with the leadership of a faith community and determine which topics (or modules) would be the most helpful for their situation. Then workshops would be held, perhaps monthly, to learn healthy ways to move forward. The sessions usually include a brief Bible study, background information and plenty of interactive discussion, and they can be tailored to the needs of each group. With the reorganizing of our United Church structure, which comes into place in the new year, this program could be very helpful for us all.

I am grateful that I am able to use my continuing education time to take courses like the United Fresh Start training so that I can be of greater service to you and to the wider church.

Refugee Sponsorship Fundraising Appeal

In the fall of 2015, Erin Mills United, Erindale United, and Streetsville United churches formed the Northwest Mississauga Constituent Group to become refugee sponsors with the United Church of Canada as our Sponsorship Agreement holder. At that time, we accepted the responsibility of fully supporting the sponsored refugee(s) for one year following their arrival in Canada. In order to meet that commitment, a fundraising appeal was launched in early 2016. The Northwest Mississauga Constituent Group, with support from Eden United Church raised $63,078.82. E.M.U.C’s contribution was $17, 842.81. The original budget and fundraising target was based on 2015 prices, which have increased in the intervening time. Since the arrival of Tarek and the Nadaff family, we have had expenditures of $35,115.02, which means that unless we are able raise a further $40,000, we will be unable to meet our commitment. As a result we are holding a direct appeal for donations. The target for EMUC is $10,000.

What's Coming!

This Sunday!!!

On Sunday October 21st, friends and family interested in learning about Islam and Islam Heritage are invited to celebrate Islamic Heritage Month at the Islamic Centre of Canada, 2200 South Sheridan Way. An Open Doors event is running from 12:30 to 4:30 pm. A presentation on 'The Early History of Muslims in Canada' will be given by Hussan Munir, a historian. Other activities include exhibitions. calligraphy, children's activities, entertainment and refreshments. FREE ADMISSION. RSVP at http://bit/do/opendoors2018. All are Welcome!

STRIDERS' HIKING GROUP

This Sunday October 21st is the hike to Spencer Gorge/Webster Falls, Dundas Ontario. The Spencer Gorge Conservation Area exhibits the physical features which have made the Niagara Escarpment one of Ontario's most spectacular geological formations.This significant natural area contains two beautiful waterfalls: Webster and Tew Falls. Both offer spectacular vistas of the gorge. Refreshments will be served at Rev. Kathi's home in Dundas after the hike. A sign up sheet has been posted in the Narthex to better prepare

transportation/parking/refreshments.

Women for Women

Women for Women starts tonight , Friday, October 19th at 6 pm. We will have dinner & a workshop on "Mindful Yoga" with Daphne Bennett. Email invitations will go out soon with more details. Cost is still $10. Future events will be listed on the invitation as well as outlined on Oct. 19. See Cathy Scattergood for more information. Hope to see you there!

OPEN DOOR DINNER

As part of the Open Door Program, EMUC will be hosting a dinner at Square One on Thursday, October 25th. There is a sign-up sheet posted at the back of the church or you may call Lorraine Moore, 905-821-1741 for more information.

How to help: Prepare a casserole (e.g. Shepherd’s pie, Mac N’Cheese, Turkey/ Pot Pie, vegetarian dish); slice up some fresh veggies (e.g. carrots, celery, peppers, cucumber) or toss a salad (e.g. green, cole slaw, Caesar, Greek). Bake some cookies or squares. If any one wishes to be creative, some Halloween themed cookies would be great for the kids. If cooking isn’t your forte, we need drinks, buns, paper plates, napkins, cutlery. If you are unable to cook, but want to help, we will need 4 people in addition to me to help at Square One. We will meet at the church at 4:30 that day.

CALLING ALL EUCHRE PLAYERS!

This is an invitation to our Fall Euchre and Dessert Evening.

Where: Erin Mills United Church in the Lower Hall.

When: Saturday, Oct. 27th, 2018. Register at 6:30 pm; play starts at 7 pm

Cost: $10.00 per person.

Why: To enjoy great cards, win prizes and, of course, yummy desserts.

BOOKWORMS WANTED!

There has been interest expressed in creating a third book club at EMUC. Five or so people, to a maximum of ten, are required to get this started. The present book clubs would be happy to share information about their structure when new members meet to discuss and design their own. Sign up on the sheet posted on the bulletin board in the narthex, or call Sandy Hayes at 905-820-4437. The new club could meet during the day or evening depending on the availability of the members, so please state your preference.

CALLING ALL KNITTERS AND KNITTER WANNABES!

A Prayer Shawl ministry will be held in the church narthex the first Wednesday of every month, commencing WEDNESDAY, November 7, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m . The shawls will be given to EMUC members (and beyond) who are unable to attend due to being shut in, or ill, or who just need to feel wrapped in prayer from our church. All knitters, learners, or those who just want to chat are welcome. The Fall is the perfect time to get back to knitting, so dust off those needles, gather your extra yarn and plan to drop by. The next Bunch for Lunch is scheduled for November 4th, 2018 after the service at 11:45 am . We will meet at the Symposium Restaurant,

3055 Dundas St W, Mississauga (north side of Dundas just west of Winston Churchill; plaza with Mandarin). Separate bills. All are welcome.

' FUNDSCRIP' PROGRAM

FUNDSCRIP is an innovative fundraising program that asks you to purchase gift cards in order to pay for regular items you buy every month. A percentage of the cards purchased through FUNDSCRIP is donated back to our church.

Order forms for gift cards are available the last Sunday of every month. The next order date is Sunday, October 28, 2018. Speak to Joanne Hines if you have any questions about the program.
