With Milk And Peanut Butter, Nonprofit Lowers Cost
To Fight Childhood Malnutrition
In a food-processing facility in Fitzgerald, Georgia, in the heart of peanut-growing country, a nonprofit called MANA Nutrition is doing its part to ease this crisis. Each day, MANA makes about 425,000 lifesaving meals of ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF), containing fortified milk and vitamins suspended in peanut butter. Each high-calorie, protein-rich packet has a two-year shelf life and doesn't require added water, cooking, or refrigeration. MANA's daily RUTF production provides six weeks of treatment for about 3,400 children who suffer from severe acute malnutrition (SAM).
