REV. DON HANSHEW, SENIOR PASTOR
REV. RACHEL COLLINS, PASTOR OF DISCIPLESHIP
| | |
The Revised Common Lectionary is a really cool tool that helps take the church through the majority of the Bible in a three-year cycle. It gives an Old Testament reading (the first reading), psalm, New Testament (second reading), and a Gospel reading. There are passages set out for every day but there are also picks for Sundays that guide us through themes.
We are not using the lectionary passage this week. Since we are in the midst of the Bedrock Sermon Series, we will be focusing on Blessings. However, the lectionary passages for this Sunday are so powerful we have to talk about them today.
Take a moment and read Isaiah 58:1-12. I recommend the NRSVUE or the NIV version.

Done?
Okay. What were your take aways?
There is a very haunting sermon title in here. “The Fast I Choose.”
Which do you choose?
Walter Brueggemann has a particularly cutting phrase:
“The Israelites enjoy worship”
He says this because the Israelites are infamous for worshiping in a performative way. It was often for the purpose of looking holy and following the letter of the law but without the heart and focus on the Divine.
We crave worship! After two weeks of not being together, we are hungry to be together to worship in word and song. But we are cautioned in this passage to not simply see it as something that leads us towards God being useful to us. Rev. James Howell says, “It is not just our foolish thinking we might use God as a tool for what we want; it is also our failure to get in sync with God’s vision for justice.”
This is heavy stuff! But it speaks to us in some really important ways as we look around us at the needs of our neighbors, the needs of our community, region, and world.
| |
I find two incredibly hopeful things in these passages. When we pair it with the Matthew 5:13-20 passage, we hear the call to no longer hide our light under a bushel. You’ll immediately think of “This Little Light of Mine.” The cool thing is that we are told that we have a light. Something to share in a world of darkness. When we share the light that we are given, others will know us, therefore be drawn to God.
Isaiah tells us that when we love our God, we work alongside God in finding Shalom, peace, for all people, then not only will we have light that is shining forth… But “Your light will break forth like the dawn!” “Then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like noonday!”
These are exciting words that give us hope is a world that is heavy, harsh, often devoid of hope in the face of injustice, oppression, addiction, mental health crises, health trials, and death. Your healing will come.
I am going to leave you with a Franciscan Benediction.
May God bless you with discomfort,
At easy answers, half-truths,
And superficial relationships
So that you may live
Deep within your heart.
May God bless you with anger
At injustice, oppression,
And exploitation of people,
So that you may work for
Justice, freedom and peace.
May God bless you with tears,
To shed for those who suffer pain,
Rejection, hunger and war,
So that you may reach out your hand
To comfort them and
To turn their pain to joy
And may God bless you
With enough foolishness
To believe that you can
Make a difference in the world,
So that you can do
What others claim cannot be done
To bring justice and kindness
To all our children and the poor.

Second Sunday Study: February 8
9:45 a.m. | Wesley Hall
Watching the news can turn up the volume on what we are already carrying, including stress, worry, and fear about the world around us. On Sunday, February 8, we’ll open Matthew 5:1–12 (The Beatitudes) and ask a very real question: When fear is in the air, what kind of people does Jesus form? We’ll draw wisdom from two influential African American theologians, Howard Thurman and James H. Cone, to help us hear Jesus with fresh clarity and deeper courage. No prior Bible knowledge needed. Come for a thoughtful, Scripture-first conversation that stays grounded, honest, and practical for everyday life. Grab some coffee from the Welcome Center and come to Wesley Hall ready to talk at your table.
