Gone Fishin' (Almost)
Not sure if you noticed, but lately my sermons have been using fishing illustrations. I’m not sure I can help it. My mind keeps wandering to the water!
There's something about standing in a river, or drifting in a boat, in the quiet of early morning, that resets something deep inside me. Sometimes the world gets loud and complicated, and the water just… doesn't care. It keeps moving. And so do I.
I think that's actually holy.
Jesus understood this. He didn't call fishermen off their boats by accident. He met them where they were most alive and doing the thing that made them feel like themselves. And then he said, follow me. I imagine Jesus still works that way. Meeting us in the garden, on the trail, at the canvas, in the kitchen, or on the back porch with a cup of coffee. In whatever that special place is where we breathe in deeply and exhale ease.
So, here's my pastoral encouragement for your weekend: figure out a way to do the thing that grounds you. The thing that makes you feel like yourself again, when life was not complicated. I don’t feel like that is wasted time. I feel it might just be where God is waiting to have a word with you.
See you Sunday. I may or may not bring up fishing again…

This June, we're doing something a little different. We want to know the songs of faith that have shaped you, moved you, or stayed with you through the years. This Sunday, in all four of our worship services, you will have a chance to vote on your favorite hymns. The songs with the most love behind them will inspire a brand new sermon series, with Pastor Don and Pastor Rachel digging into the history and meaning behind each one.
There's actually a word for what we learn through the songs we sing together: hymnody. And we think it's worth a few sermons.
Dust off your hymnal, flip through your Spotify playlist, and start thinking about the songs that matter most to you. Your vote shapes what we preach.

Congratulations! You have successfully navigated the Book of Judges and 1st Samuel and you read a few of David’s psalms. The Book of Judges can be succinctly summarized from chapter 2, verse 10 through chapter 3, verse 6. Israel was not a unified nation under the rule of a divine king. Instead, it consisted of numerous tribal states. These tribal states adopted the practices of idolatry from their neighboring nations and integrated idol worship with the worship of the One True God.
The people of Israel petitioned Samuel to grant them a king. Samuel admonishes them by declaring, “God is your king.” Despite Samuel’s counsel, the people yearned for a human king to emulate the customs of the nations around them.
Consequently, God gave them King Saul. You have diligently followed the life of King Saul and his defiance of divine authority. The concluding chapter of First Samuel provides a detailed account of Saul’s demise, paving the way for David’s ascension to the throne.
Throughout the month of May, we will embark on a journey through the life of King David, witnessing both his triumphs and tribulations. We will delve into the annals of Israel’s history, characterized by its tumultuous and challenging nature.
Keep reading. GOD blesses the reading of His Holy Word.
