I'm New

REV. DON HANSHEW, SENIOR PASTOR

REV. RACHEL COLLINS, PASTOR OF DISCIPLESHIP

It’s Hard To Say Goodbye

As many of you have heard, our Youth Director, Austin Weaver, is taking a new job at First Broad Street United Methodist Church. His last day with us will be October 13. We are saddened by this but delighted for him. First Broad is his home church, and this is his dream job! Nobody wants to stand in the way of that. Additionally, they are not only able to offer him a pay raise, but also are paying for his entire Divinity Degree. Speaking from my personal experience, this is HUGE! This move also allows him to be near family during an important season for him. For these reasons, and more, we support Austin and are delighted for his next step in ministry.

If you would like to give a gift to Austin or share a note of encouragement, please make the gift directly to him. You can drop these off in the church office or place them in a basket at his reception on October 13.

This past Sunday night one of the youths said they were happy for the sadness they felt, because that meant we also have felt love and joy. Indeed, Austin has been a source of great love, joy, and faith for us. We are thankful for the time he has been with us. May the grace of God continue to go before him and prepare the ministry for his arrival.

Giving God Thanks,

Pastor Don

Prayer Beyond Sunday

This past Sunday was meaningful to many as we experienced prayer in new ways. Some have asked for additional tools to help guide them in prayer. An app that I am using is 24-7 Prayer. I have enjoyed the way it introduces me to an expanded use of language when I pray.

There is also Lectio for Families. It is a free daily devotional that helps families read the Bible and explore faith through conversation and prayer together. You can also listen to it read by someone with a very fun British accent. Who doesn’t like that?

There will be no Fountain City Fellowship meal or classes on October 9. Have a fantastic fall break and we will see again you on October 16!

Free Meals at Fountain City Fellowship: October 16-November 20

Thanks to a generous anonymous donation, we will be offering free meals for everyone on Wednesday nights from October 16 through November 20. Please don’t forget to register your attendance!

NEWS AND NOTES

Greetings Church Family,

Thank you so much for the opportunity to serve your students as the FCUMC Director of Youth Ministries for the last year and four months. As some of you know, I have accepted the position to serve as the Director of Student Ministries at First Broad Street UMC in Kingsport, TN.

Thank you for the generosity, kindness, and hospitality you have shown me during my time here. I am thankful for each of you and your willingness to support FCUMC Youth Ministries. We have incredible students, leaders, and families, and I am excited to see what God will do with their lives.

FCUMC will always hold a special place in my heart, and I will forever cherish the memories we made. God is active in Fountain City, and I can't wait to witness what He will continue to do through the students and congregation. Each student has many gifts and talents, and I am excited to see how they are used to glorify God's kingdom. During this time of transition, please join me in prayer for our students, volunteers, and parents.

Once again, thank you so much for blessing me with the opportunity to serve as the Director of Youth Ministries. I look forward to seeing how God will continue to move in Fountain City United Methodist Church.

Peace be with you,

Austin Weaver

WORRIES, WIGGLES AND FEARS. OH MY!

By Gail Clift, Student Ministries Family Advocate

Since the pandemic, anxiety has been a frequent word in our conversations. Multiple factors during that time resulted in increased worry, fear and anxiety for many who had never experienced those emotions before. After our situations improved, the anxiety subsided for some but for many, particularly children and youth, the anxiety has lingered and even expanded.

Consider the meaning of the three words in the title. Fear is an emotion that is caused when we believe that something dangerous is a threat to us or could harm us. My fear is heights! Worry is often an anticipatory fear that comes from dwelling on problems, troubles, or doubts. Worry does stem from anxiety. Worry can be persistent and take over your entire thought process.

Anxiety is intense, excessive and persistent worry or fear about everyday situations. It is often a fear that something bad may happen. Small worries become overwhelming, and anxiety can become persistent, leading to feelings of panic and can be difficult to control. Separation Anxiety is difficulty tolerating leaving a parent or guardian. Children don’t often know how to describe anxiety but may act out or seem distracted. Many times, a child may be identified as having ADHD because they are so distracted and worrying about things that might happen. The thought process is often “what if. . . . ?
