House passes resolution against Phoenix purchase

HCR 26 would declare the State Board of Education has acted beyond the scope of its legal authority in attempting to affiliate the University of Idaho with the University of Phoenix. The resolution calls on the board to reconsider its vote to establish a nonprofit corporation for the purchase and to fully cooperate with the Legislature.

Committee passes fix for 2023 public defense bill

The bill states “the legislature finds that providing guardian ad litem representation through the office of the state public defender would create numerous costly conflicts of interest that would detract from the office’s mission. Therefore, it is the intent of the legislature to keep guardian ad litem representation administered locally with reimbursement provided by state funds when needed.”

School facilities bill moves through Senate committee

Citizen testimony included dismay that state funding for school buildings – and the legislature stepping up to its constitutional mandate for a uniform school system – only comes as a secondary feature of a bill that is promoted as more tax cut legislation.

A smooth caucus, for those who could attend

Voters who were able to attend the Idaho Republican Presidential Caucus likely reported a great experience. But it was a different story for those who missed it, whether because of confusing information from the party, difficult weather, or work schedules. While the party was still tabulating final results Saturday night, Idaho Reports heard both success stories and challenges from voters statewide.
