Notices from the Superintendent
Riverview School - National Blue Ribbon School Nominee
Riverview School has been nominated as a National Blue Ribbon School for Exemplary High Performance. This is the highest honor that the US Department of Education bestows on schools nationwide. National Blue Ribbon Schools represent the full diversity of American schools: public schools including Title I schools, charter schools, magnet/choice schools, and non-public schools including parochial and independent schools. The schools are urban, suburban, and rural, large and small, traditional and innovative, and serve students of every social, economic, and ethnic background. Annually, all private and public elementary, middle, and high schools are considered based upon their academic performance in the previous year. This year 9 schools from New Jersey have been nominated. This acknowledgement represents the incredible effort our students, staff, administration, school board, and community have made in achieving our goal to ensure all students demonstrate academic success. Final National Blue Ribbon Schools will be announced in September 2020, followed by an award ceremony in Washington D.C. in November. Congratulations to Mrs. Theodoropoulos, Mrs. Sardanopoli, and all of the students, staff, and parents of Riverview School for receiving this enormous honor.

Spotlight on our Schools - Valleyview
Valleyview is proud to announce the student who has been selected by the faculty and staff for the Morris County Superintendent Leadership Award is Michael Simone
This award is being presented to Michael due to his actions and deeds. He represents being a model of citizenship and leadership to his school community. Additionally, his academic, extracurricular, and community involvement has had a positive impact on our school environment.
Congratulations to Michael and the whole Simone Family for this great recognition and honor!
The Valleyview Staff Green Team is continuing to share ways to reduce waste and improve recycling in school and at home. Some of the new 2020 changes to Denville Township's Recycling include separating cardboard and paper from metal, glass and plastics #1, 2, 4 and 5. Check out the
Denville Schools Guide to Waste and Recycling 2020
slideshow, which Valleyview students are using for discussion in their Science classes. There are additional ways for students and families to participate, like the TREX 500 lb. plastic challenge. Lastly, we have a "Low-Waste Lunch" coming up, where we encourage each grade to cut back on their trash in a friendly competition. We appreciate your support!
We're also grateful to the Valleyview PTA for adding a fresh fruit option to the lunchtime Snack Stand. Please encourage your child to pick one of the healthy options along with their regular extra snack. Thanks, PTA!
Valleyview's Builders Club had a very busy month. The club held a "Souper" Bowl soup collection. The cans of soup collected were donated to Denville Social Services. Builders Club also made Valentine cards and heart snack bags filled with treats sent to our troops overseas.
The Valleyview Girls Basketball team had a very good season. The team started the season with a 2 - 5 record, but later they found their stride. They finished the regular season with a 7 - 7 record. The team received the number three seed in the County Tournament. The girls opened up the tournament with a big victory over Bernardsville. The team was defeated by a tough Chester team in the Semifinals. Mr. Plumb is proud of all the girls for all their hard work and efforts throughout the season. He is especially proud of all the 8th graders, who played their final season at Valleyview. We would like to thank all of the 8th graders for their contributions to the team and wish them the best of luck in the future. The 8th graders were Mikayla D., Riley J., Serena L., Lauren S., Molly N., Taylor J., Angelica A., Tiyanna J., Rachel M., and Isabella Q.
The Valleyview Boys Basketball team finished with an impressive 14-2 record on their way to winning the GMCJCA Group 3 championship this past season. They capped off a great year with a 63-40 win over Totowa in the championship game. The Vikings leading scorer for their tournament run was Billy S. who averaged over 20 points a game. They also received key contributions from Luke D. and Michael S. who both averaged over 10 rebounds a game, and Ricky R. who led the team in assists during the 3 game playoff span. The team which consisted of thirteen 8th graders and two 7th graders showed excellence throughout the course of the year. The boys received wonderful support from the Valleyview community throughout the season. Excellent job Boys!
The Valleyview Wrestling team concluded another very successful season on the mat. The team finished 8-5 and placed 7th (out of 18 teams) in the County Tournament. The team was led by 8th-grade captains Gavin G., Elijah F., Jack T., and Anthony M, who will be sorely missed next year. At the county tournament held at Frelinghuysen Middle School, the Viking grapplers were led by county champion at Heavyweight, Jack T., who had a thrilling 3-0 victory over an opponent he previously lost to during the season. Other Viking place winners included Elijah F. (3rd place), Ryan P. (3rd place), Nicky V. (3rd place) and Mason B. (3rd place). The future looks bright for the Vikings moving forward as the varsity team was lead by many 6th and 7th graders including Vince D.(70), Nate G. (75), Ethan P. (85), Justin B. (95), Ryan P. (90), Nicky V. (110), Romie K. (105), Sam A. (80), Vince R. (75), James C. (116) and Aaryan S (90). The team will also miss our 8th-grade captains as well as 8th graders: Colin S., Connor T., Ryan T., Justin D., Luis J., Hogan H., Nick S., Eric O., Kian B., Jeff C., and manager Lino P.
Our school policy is that students are required to turn their phones off and place them in their lockers prior to homeroom. The cell phones are to remain in their lockers throughout the school day. Once the 2:23 dismissal bell rings, students are able to retrieve their cell phones and use them. Of late, however, we have seen a significant increase in issues arising from student cell phone use during the school day. These issues include:
- Students videoing, taking pictures of others without their permission, and at times posting these and other pictures on social media. This is a direct and serious violation of our student code of conduct and carries with it significant consequences.
- A second issue is that students are reaching out directly to their parents/guardians saying that they do not feel well and want to go home. Parents are then showing up to pick up their child without our nurses' office having any information or involvement.
Please, help us by not reaching out to your student during the day. Encouraging your child to go to the nurse when he/she does not feel well. In addition, if at any point during the day you need to get in touch with your child, please call the main office and we will be sure to get him/her a message in a timely manner. We appreciate your reinforcement of this policy with your child.

Important Notice about Valleyview Chromebook Security
We would like to alert parents that Valleyview student chromebook security has been changed. We were planning on making this change in the summer, however in order to provide a more secure, educational device we have locked down the chromebooks. Students are no longer to able to add apps or extensions to their chromebooks. If they want or need an extension or app, they make a request to a teacher. If this is considered educationally necessary the teachers will request the app through the technology department. In most cases this will be completed the same day the teacher makes the request.
We still ask that you speak to your children about proper use of The Denville Schools equipment as well as safe and appropriate internet usage at school and home.

To All Parents/Guardians - The Denville Schools Health Offices would like to remind you about Tabitha's Law:
This bill requires parents to notify school administrators whenever their child will be absent from school, and requires administrators to contact parents whenever a pupil is absent without the parent's having provided prior notice. The first few hours of a child abduction are the most vital to the recovery process. Tabitha's Law is intended to help provide an early warning trigger during that critical time.
On the morning of April 29, 2003, 13-year-old Nashville, Tennessee student, Tabitha Tudor, did not show up for school. Although school administrators had received no notification from Tabitha's parents that she would be absent that day, the school failed to alert the Tudors of their daughter's unexplained absence. As a result, her parents did not learn that Tabitha was missing until after her father arrived home at 4:45 p.m. Due to the delay, law enforcement officials and Tabitha's parents lost an entire day before their search could begin. Tabitha is still missing.
