Holocaust Survivor Visits Foothill:
8th Grade Students Get a First Hand Account
We were honored and privileged to hear the emotional, first hand account of World War II from Mrs. Fajgl Fischel Moncznik today.

Mrs. Fischel is 94 years old and she was accompanied by her daughter. Mrs. Fischel grew up in Poland. In 1938, when she was just 10 years old, her family was sent to the Jewish ghetto. When she was 11, she was taken away from her family and sent to the first of 3 Nazi concentration camps. After narrowly escaping the gas chamber, she ended her time at the same camp as Anne and Margot Frank. In total, she spent 5 years in slave labor, only because she was Jewish. She was the age of our students!

A Foothill student asked her what kept her going, and she answered "Hope, belief in God, and that I would someday find my family." At age 16, she was liberated, but found she had only one family member left, as all the rest had perished at the hands of the Nazi regime.

Mother and daughter had strong messages for our students, knowing that the population of Jewish Holocaust survivors is aging -- soon there will be no one to give first-hand accounts of this history.

They asked our children to tell their story becuase they have now heard it directly from a survivor. "Don't forget. It is your responsiblity to use your words to promote peace and love. When you hear people talking negatively about another culture or another religion, stand up...be kind, be nice. Don't forget you have loving parents, and treasure them. When you walk out the door, you don't know if it will be the last time you see them."

What a gift our students have received by meeting this remarkable woman! Thank you to the Geldwert Family for organizing this wonderful opportunity!

8th Grade Eulogy for "Dead" Words
October ended on a sad note in Ms. Resto's 8th grade English class as the 8th graders said good-bye to their "dead words" such as Very, So, and Like. For the last couple of years in October, 8th graders write a eulogy for their chosen word. As can be seen, some students were quite emotional. We suspect parents won't be sad to see this words exit their vocabulary.

for
Grandparents and Family Friends Day
*Prefer this information in Chinese? Click HERE.

On Friday, November 18, Foothill will be honoring a long-held tradition of inviting grandparents and adult family friends to experience a morning at our school. We can't wait to showcase our amazing students and beautiful campus! Here is what you need to know:

General Overview:
  • This event is exclusively for students, their grandparents, or other adult friends of the family. We want this to be a special time of bonding and sharing for students and these treasured adults. Due to space limitations, we cannot accommodate parents at this event. If your parent has a physical disability that requires assistance, please let us know.
  • The day includes classroom experiences, photo booth, refreshments, and group activities.
  • Students should NOT bring backpacks or lunches on Grandparents and Family Friends Day, as they block the walking areas on campus. All academic materials will be sent home on Thursday that week.
  • Hosting a grandparent/friend is optional. Students who are not hosting a grandparent/family friend will attend school as well.
  • This is a formal dress day for students!
  • This event falls on the Friday before our Thanksgiving holiday week. It will be a wonderful way to kick off the holiday of gathering with loved ones!

Arrival:
  • We encourage you to drop off students and grandparents/family friends together, or have them drive together, if possible. There is limited parking for grandparents/friends in both the Harrison and Towne Avenue parking lots.
  • Arrival begins at 7:30a.m. with the event starting at 8:15a.m.
  • Grandparents check in at the gym.

Dismissal:
  • October 18 will be a early dismissal day for our school. Due to the unique nature of the day, dismissal will happen a little differently.
  • Dismissal is at 11:15a.m. for all students who are hosting grandparents/family friends.
  • We ask that students who are not hosting a grandparent/family friend be picked up at their normal dismissal location at 11:30a.m. in order to reduce traffic congestion as grandparents exit the parking lots.
  • All students should check out that day with their teacher, and then may leave with their Grandparent/Family Friend. If the child has a younger sibling, we ask that grandparents check out with the classroom of the youngest sibling.
  • If you are driving to pick up your student and grandparents/family friends, please make sure to announce in Pikmykid.

Tips to pass on to your guests:
  • Please wear comfortable shoes! Our campus is large and they you be walking with your student.
  • If you need disability assistance, such as a parking space, please contact Colette Sims at [email protected] so that we can accommodate you.

On Thursday, our 4th graders presented "Save Me a Seat", based on the book by Sarah Weeks and Gita Varadarajan. The story of two friends from very different cultures touches on celebrating differences while joining together against a common enemy -- the school bully. Bravo, 4th Grade!
