Lament and Gratitude Living Side by Side
During this nationally designated Thanksgiving weekend of gratitude, where is the space for lament? How do those of us with personal grief, cultural heartbreak, or existential anxiety live into the yes/and of this season? YES, I am grateful, AND I am sorrowful. This Sunday we will practice expressing this balance. Come join us, filled with the joys and the concerns in your heart and mind.
Children and youth will go to their faith formation program after joys and sorrows.

Would you like your child dedicated on Christmas Eve morning? Since Christmas Eve is a Sunday, we will have our usual 10:30 service and would like to offer the opportunity for families to have their children of any age dedicated to the UCE community that morning. Please contact Rev. Eileen as soon as possible if you would like to participate.

Greetings from your Executive Operations Director |
As we enter into this Holiday Season of giving thanks, our hearts are heavy with the grief that pervades our world. May we take moments this Thanksgiving to be grateful for love, health, family, and friends who surround us and give us strength. May we sustain one another.
As I write this newsletter article, I am thinking of our beloved Barbara Young who left us on November 15. I am grateful to our pastoral care team and caring committee, and most specifically Ann McCallister and Becky Taveirne for the time, care and bonds of friendship that created a sense of family for Barbara this past year. I feel fortunate to have been a part of her life and enjoyed the lilt in her voice as she proudly talked of the hours she spent at UCE preparing the newsletter, filing and other tasks I might assign. I had no idea how much that meant to her. She loved UCE and enjoyed the group of women who surrounded her in these past months. We will miss her. I am grateful for her presence in my own life.

Our hats are off to the incredible Serendipity Auction Planning Committee for working so collaboratively and creatively together, for building community and expanding inclusivity, for pivoting and adapting to make the best of every challenge, for putting on a smashing party, and for helping us raise together $34,200 in support of our mission. Thank you to Chris Allender, who chaired this wonderful planning committee: Cathy Deamant, Mary Beth Roth, Meredith Haydon, Carla Williams, Dan Lawrence, Jeanie McCullough, Laura Etchen, Matt and Sydney Francolino. Thanks for putting the fun into fundraising!

PLEASE NOTE: Requests to have articles in the newsletter should be sent to newsletter@ucevanston.org by noon on WEDNESDAY. | |

Staying Healthy
During this winter holiday season when many of us are gathering again with friends and family, please remember those who are immunocompromised or who have pre-existing conditions. Here are things you can do to keep our entire community healthy from COVID-19 and in general:
- Get vaccinated or boosted
- Stay home if you don't feel well
- Test yourself for COVID-19 if you aren't sure what you have
- Wear a mask if you've been exposed or are on the mend
- Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds
Wishing you happy and healthy winter holidays!

We always have much to celebrate at UCE, and on December 10 we’ll have a double celebration! Join us after worship as we celebrate two major renovations in the lower level:
· A toilet-paper cutting ceremony of our two renovated bathrooms that are bright, fresh, and more accessible and inclusive, funded by the Capital Campaign and transformed through the efforts of Sandra Robinson and Michael Skilton.
· A crepe-paper cutting ceremony of the renovated nursery, transformed into a children’s wonderland by the vision of Gillian Lawrence and through the efforts of Gillian, Robb Geiger, and Dan Lawrence.
Come celebrate!

So Much to Celebrate!
We had so much to celebrate at last Saturday’s Serendipity Celebration Event and we are very grateful to the many people it took to make this important fundraiser a success. Thanks to your generosity, hard work and love for UCE - we have raised $34,200, 22% more than our $28,000 Goal. Every bit as important is that we have deepened and widened our community - while volunteering on the many auction committees, at the Celebration Event and during the 27 group events that 534 guests will attend during this upcoming year. Your raffle ticket purchases raised $3,305. Congratulations to Jenny Walsh for winning the American Club Resort raffle, Jean Durkin for winning Rev. Eileen's Sermon Topic raffle and Laura Etchen for winning the Oceanique Dinner for Two raffle. There are still items available for purchase, click here to see the catalog of fixed-price items. Thank you again to all who made donations, purchased items and volunteered to make this year's Serendipity Auction & Celebration Event such a great success.

The video recording is available on YouTube and in dvd format from public libraries. It is also on Amazon Prime, Netflix, Apple TV, and Google Play.

UCE Fiction Book Group
The UCE Fiction Book Group is reading Good Night, Irene, by Luis Alberto Urrea.
In 1943, Irene Woodward and Dorothy Dunne signed up to be "Donut Dollies,” a wing of the Red Cross driving trucks equipped to make donuts and coffee into the chaos that is WWII. Their charge is to comfort American soldiers with a taste of home and a sympathetic ear. They do much more than that and return home heroes.
