NATIONAL BUNDT DAY
National Bundt Day, also known as National Bundt Cake Day, is observed every year on November 15th. As people across the United States plan menus for the holidays, a bundt cake is sure to be on the list at least once.
A Bundt cake can be any cake baked in a Bundt pan, forming it into a distinctive ring shape. The mold of the Bundt pan was initially inspired by the traditional European fruit cake known as Gugelhupf. It was in the 1950s and 1960s that the cookware company Nordic Ware popularized the style for the mold design and trademarked the name Bundt. Nordic Ware started producing Bundt pans made from cast aluminum. Similar pans are sold as “fluted tube pans” or other similar names.
In the beginning, the Bundt pan did not sell well, and Nordic Ware considered discontinuing the product. Then in the 1963 New Good Housekeeping Cookbook, the Bundt pan was mentioned, and sales increased. In 1966, sales increased dramatically when a Bundt cake called the “Tunnel of Fudge,” baked by Ella Helfrich, took second place at the annual Pillsbury Bake-Off and won a $5,000.00 prize. The publicity from the Bake-Off resulted in more than 200,000 Bundt pan requests.
Nordic Ware has sold more than 60 million Bundt pans across North America.
Have you ever eaten a Bundt cake? If not, today is the perfect day to try it for the first time. If you’re looking for the best kinds of Bundt cakes to try, we have 10 flavors you can try:
- Lemon
- Pineapple upside down cake
- White chocolate raspberry
- Gingerbread
- Pumpkin spice
- Chocolate
- Lemon raspberry
- Peanut butter chocolate chip
- Strawberries and cream
- Red velvet
If you want to try your hand at baking a Bundt cake, there are some tips and tricks you should use to ensure your success. First of all, if this is your first Bundt cake, you will want to stick to a pan that is pretty plain and simple and not so elaborate. (You might be surprised that not all Bundt pans are the same!) After you have chosen your pan, you’ll want to choose your recipe. Some cake recipes work better in Bundt pans than others. This includes cakes with denser batters, such as pound cake. You’ll probably want to avoid cake mix from a box, and also sponge cakes, as these recipes aren’t as dense. After you have carefully chosen your recipe, grease your Bundt pan with shortening and then dust it with flour. You don’t want to grease the pan with butter as this ingredient will cause the cake to stick to the pan as it bakes.
Bundt cakes take longer than other kinds of cake to bake, and it’s not uncommon for it to bake for at least an hour. To make sure your Bundt cake is done, stick a toothpick in the center and make sure it comes out clean. One last tip is to cool it for a bit before flipping the pan upside down to get the cake out. You may have to bang the pan a little bit on the counter to get it to come out. Also, don’t worry about frosting your Bundt cake. Due to the difficulty of frosting a ring-shaped cake, Bundt cakes are typically served undecorated, glazed, or dusted with powdered sugar. If you’re someone who isn’t into eating cake, there are other things food you can make with your Bundt pan. Some people use their Bundt pans for monkey bread, sub sandwiches, lasagna, stuffing, or gelatin salads. A Bundt pan is also great for making an ice ring for punch. Others don’t use their Bundt pan for food, they use it to make crafts. A Bundt pan is wonderful for creating holiday wreaths, gift baskets, and planters. You could even stick two Bundt pans together to make a cute pumpkin craft, which is perfect for the fall season.

Tropical depression forms in the Caribbean Sea, expected to strengthen into a storm soon
BY POET WOLFE
A system in the Caribbean Sea is forecast to become a tropical storm Thursday after it strengthened into a tropical depression, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.
Located east of Honduras, Tropical Depression 19 was producing winds of 35 mph at 10 a.m. while moving west at 14 mph. Though it is too soon to determine what impacts the system could bring to the eastern Gulf of Mexico, specifically Florida and Cuba, forecasters said residents in these areas should monitor the system.
The system is not expected to impact Louisiana, according to the National Weather Service of New Orleans.
Forecasters expect the tropical depression to slam portions of Central America with heavy rainfall through early next week, causing "life-threatening" flash flooding in Honduras, Belize, El Salvador, eastern Guatemala and western Nicaragua.
From the National Hurricane Center
By early next week, it is expected to approach Belize and the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, bringing a risk of strong winds.
NHC's latest forecast shows the storm peaking as a tropical storm, weakening over land and entering the Gulf of Mexico as a tropical depression.
If it forms, the hurricane would be called Sara, and it would be the 18th named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season. The season ends on Nov. 30.

infandous
/ˈɪnˌfændəs/
Definition: Unspeakably bad or atrocious; too terrible to be expressed in words.
Origin: Derived from the Latin word "infandus," meaning "unspeakable," which is a combination of "in-" (not) and "fandus" (speakable, from "fari," to speak).
Example: The infandous crimes committed during the war left the community in shock and disbelief.
The term "infandous" directly translates to "unspeakable," reflecting the depth of horror or atrocity that exceeds the capacity for verbal expression. When something is labeled as infandous, it signifies an event or act so dreadful that it defies description and evokes a profound sense of revulsion or grief. This word encapsulates the human experience of confronting the unthinkable, where words fail to convey the magnitude of suffering or evil witnessed. In literature and discourse, "infandous" serves as a poignant reminder of the limits of language in capturing the darkest aspects of existence.

Friday Night Wine School - Perfect Wines for A Grateful Gathering
Fri Nov 15, 2024 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM CST Swirl, 70119
Join us for our attendance-limited, signup-only Friday night tasting! Tastings are held on the back patio with a max of 10 people per time slot.
No matter what you call it, the 4th Thursday in November has always been one of our favorite holidays at Swirl because it is one single day where we stop everything we're doing and celebrate life and relationships with food, wine, family and great friends. There are no obligatory presents involved, just maybe the gift of something you've cooked, a bottle of nice wine for the host and your presence at the table. We consider it our job to make you look good and drink well on that special Thursday. So this year we are getting a headstart for those of you who like to prepare early!
Julia Child famously said that "a party without cake is just a meeting," and we believe a dinner party without a good bottle of wine is just another meal. While we love putting together a crowd-pleasing menu and surrounding ourselves with those we hold dear, a great bottle of wine is the icing on the cake and we know that sometimes making those choices can be overwhelming. So we hope you'll join Wesley from Vino Wholesale as we taste through some of our favorite food-friendly wines that would be just perfect for your gathering. There's sure to be a sparkling, whites, reds, maybe a rosé? We'll discuss food pairings so bring your questions and even your menus, we are here to help!
Speaking of food pairings...this year we are doing a holiday recipe challenge! Send us your favorite, tried and true recipe for your gathering. We'll pick our 5 favorite entries and pair wines with them to present at our Grateful Gatherings tasting on 11/15. We're looking for appetizers, mains, sides and desserts - vegan, vegetarian, meat, fish, poultry, whatever...Wesley and I will select the recipes and pair the wines. Send me an email, beth@swirlnola.com, with the subject "Holiday Recipe Challenge" to enter your recipe - complete recipes only please, with ingredients and instructions, we will share these the night of the event and send you our pairing recommendation if your recipe gets chosen.
-All ticket sales are final.
-We will hold our tastings outside on the patio from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM on Fridays weather permitting, if it rains we move inside to the back of the shop.
-Your $5 tasting fee is refunded when you purchase a bottle of wine from the tasting. Limit 1 refund per bottle per customer.
-Please arrive 5 minutes early for your time slot, as we may not be able to move you to another spot.
-No waiting in line for your taste of wine in a plastic cup and snippet of info. During your time slot, you will have the presenter's undivided attention as you learn about and taste the wines from Riedel glassware.
-When your tasting is over, you can browse and shop or enjoy a glass or bottle at our indoor and outdoor tables.

The Surprising History of Curse Words
Curse words. We've all heard them, and most likely, we've all used them at some point in our lives. These words have a unique power that can evoke strong emotions and provoke intense reactions. But have you ever stopped to wonder about the history of curse words? Where did they come from? How did they evolve over time? In this blog post, we will take a deep dive into the surprising history of curse words and explore their fascinating origins.
Origins of Curse Words
Curse words have a rich and diverse history that stretches back centuries. Many of these words have their roots in ancient civilizations, where they were used to express strong emotions or invoke supernatural powers. For example, the ancient Romans believed in the power of "taboo words" or "formulae" that were used to curse their enemies. These words were often written on lead tablets and buried, serving as a form of magical spell.
Evolution of Curse Words
As languages evolved and societies changed, curse words also underwent transformations. In medieval Europe, curse words were often associated with religious blasphemy. The use of words considered sacrilegious or disrespectful towards God or the Church was considered highly offensive and could result in severe punishment. However, as societies became more secular, curse words shifted towards more vulgar and sexually explicit language.
Taboo Words in Literature
Curse words have not only been prevalent in everyday language but have also found their way into literature throughout history. In Shakespearean plays, for example, curse words were used to provoke laughter or shock the audience. The bard's works are peppered with creative insults and curse words that were considered scandalous for their time. Even today, these words continue to be a source of fascination and entertainment for readers and audiences alike.
The Role of Social Norms
The acceptability of curse words has always been closely tied to social norms and cultural values. What may be considered a profanity in one culture may be perfectly acceptable in another. In some societies, curse words are used casually in everyday conversation, while in others, they are strictly forbidden. The evolution and acceptance of curse words in society highlight the ever-changing nature of language and our shifting attitudes towards taboo subjects.
Language and Power
Curse words also hold a significant power dynamic. They can be used to assert dominance, express frustration, or challenge authority. In some cases, curse words have been used as a form of resistance against oppressive regimes or as a way to express dissent. The power behind these words lies not only in their explicit nature but also in the emotions they can evoke and the impact they can have on others.
The Influence of Pop Culture
In recent decades, pop culture has played a significant role in shaping the way we use and perceive curse words. Movies, music, and television shows have contributed to the normalization and widespread use of profanity. Characters in popular TV shows often use curse words to add authenticity or comedic effect. This cultural shift has led to curse words becoming more commonly used and accepted in everyday language.
The Future of Curse Words
As language continues to evolve, it is likely that curse words will also undergo further transformations. The increasing interconnectedness of the world through social media and the internet has led to the globalization of language and the blending of different cultures. This has resulted in the adoption of curse words from various languages and dialects, creating a diverse and ever-expanding lexicon of profanity.
The history of curse words is a testament to the complexity of language and its ability to change and adapt over time. From ancient rituals and religious taboos to modern-day pop culture, curse words have always held a unique power in human communication. As we continue to navigate the boundaries of language and societal norms, it is essential to recognize the history and significance of curse words and the role they play in shaping our cultural landscape.

NATIONAL SPICY HERMIT COOKIE DAY
National Spicy Hermit Cookie Day celebrates a cookie flavor reminiscent of autumn spices. Recognized on November 15th, this time of year is ideal for baking up a batch of these delicious cookies.
Considered an old-fashioned cookie, its spice comes from cinnamon, cloves, allspice, and sometimes nutmeg. And the added bonuses are the raisins, nuts, and dates.
Hermit cookies originated in the New England area. In 1880, the young ladies of the Trinity Church, Plattsburgh, New York published the cookbook Champlain Valley Book of Recipes with a Hermits recipe. This local cookbook was a 3rd edition suggesting its first printing was a year or two earlier. Soft and chewy, these cookies sure put a smile on the face of all who taste them.

The fruit with varieties known as "Golden Delicious" and "Granny Smith" is the apple:
- Golden Delicious
- A yellow apple with a sweet, mellow flavor and crisp texture. It has a yellow-green skin and an elongated shape.
- Granny Smith
- A green apple with a tart flavor and crisp texture. It was discovered in Australia in the 1860s by Maria Ann Smith, also known as "Granny" Anne Smith.
Both Golden Delicious and Granny Smith apple trees are self-fruitful, meaning they can produce a crop without another apple tree nearby. However, having another apple tree nearby, even of the same variety, will increase the crop yield.

Archaeology & Civilizations
The Beauty of Loulan is the preserved dead body of a woman who lived about 4000 years ago, during the Bronze Age. She was found on April 1, 1980 near the Silk Road in the Xinjiang region of China. She is one of the Tarim mummies, named after where they were found, the Tarim Basin. Unlike Egyptian mummies, which were preserved on purpose, the Loulan Beauty was preserved almost by accident. She was buried near a salt lake in the desert, where the arid and dry conditions preserved even the finer details of her face, such as her eyelashes. By DNA tests they found she was at least part European, but her people might have lived in Siberia before migrating to Xinjiang. The woman is estimated to have been between 40 and 48 years old at the time of her death. The body is 152–155 cm in stature

Hurricane in a Bad Mood - Sue Owen
Join us with Sue Owen reading and signing her new book, HURRICANE IN A BAD MOOD, her fifth book of poetry. Owen lived and taught in Louisiana for more than thirty years, and continues to offer poems rich with her provocative dark humor.
Here she explores her familiar themes of fear, danger, and death, but with a new emphasis on the threat of global warming and a future of possible doom. Her vivid curiosity, displayed in the examination of language, proverbial sayings, and the personification of inanimate objects, extends to nature’s fury, as in the title poem, “Hurricane in a Bad Mood.” In addition, she depicts the many victims of oil spills in “When Pelicans Cannot Fly” and “The Gulf Turns into Tears.” As in her earlier books, one of which won a national competition, the poems range in tone from the playful to the prophetic, often containing flashes of wit, as in “Last Nail in the Coffin” and “Even the Dead Do It.” Whether ethereal or earthy, these poems encourage the reader to remain aware of our inevitable fate, but also to confront without despair the environmental challenges of our difficult century.
Sue Owen taught as the poet-in-residence at Louisiana State University and received the Professional Artist of the Year Award from the Louisiana State Arts Council. Her four previous books of poetry are Nursery Rhymes for the Dead, The Book of Winter, My Doomsday Sampler, and The Devil’s Cookbook.

The Leonid Meteor Shower is headed our way! Look for roughly 10 meteors per minute to grace our night skies on November 17-18. Best time to spot 'em is predawn on the 18th, and you're going to get the best views looking towards the south.
The bright moonlight might make it hard to see the meteors this year, but follow these tips from astronomer Bob Berman, and you'll know everything you need to know to get the best glimpse.

Join the award-winning (1st place, baby!) NOLA Jitterbugs for a 6-week series with live music in the last class!
Our live music classes with local musicians and culture bearers, as well as our overall emphasis on music appreciation is what makes our lessons stand out among the rest!
Starts at The Contemporary Arts Center!
6-7pm Intro to Swing
For total beginners to swing dancing or dancing of any kind. Also for those looking to refresh their basics and learn some ragtime dances. We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.
7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level
This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.
No partner required to take either of these classes. Come alone or with friends!

Comedy House New Orleans
The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)
CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)
609-610 Fulton St
New Orleans, LA 70130
Mon,November 18
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

For the fourth consecutive year, Louisiana will showcase its vibrant culture in the 2025 Tournament of Rose Parade in Pasadena, California! Super Bowl LIX may happen more than three weeks before Fat Tuesday, but the host committee wants to make sure the city -- and the throngs of visitors in town for the NFL's championship game -- get the carnival experience.
The day before the game, February 8, there will be a Mardi Gras-style parade complete with elaborate floats, marching bands, and throws.
Our partners at NOLA.com report details of the parade are still being finalized, but float-builder Barry Kern says it will likely be a 20-float parade made up of signature floats from various krewes.
And because it is not an official carnival parade, corporate sponsors will also be a part of it.
Todd Graves, founder of Baton Rouge-based Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, will serve as grand marshal.
Rather than follow one of the traditional Mardi Gras routes, the Super Bowl parade will line up on Elysian Fields in the Marigny, parade up Decatur Street along the French Quarter, then take Tchoupitoulas St. to Poydras, turn up to St. Charles Ave., then proceed along St. Charles to St. Joseph St. just before reaching Harmony Circle.

Just two days after Super Bowl LIX, Jefferson Parish will celebrate its 200th birthday on Feb. 11. Bicentennial festivities kicked off at the State of Jefferson address Tuesday with the unveiling of the official poster, depicting a pelican before the Mississippi River in vivid pink and blue hues. It is illustrated by Louisiana artist Becky Fos, known for designing the 2023 state "I Voted" sticker, modeled after the Louisiana state flag.
A limited supply of signed and numbered posters can be purchased for $150, with proceeds going toward the Jefferson Community Foundation.
Courtesy of Jefferson Parish
The parish will celebrate the bicentennial on Feb. 11 with a Light the Night event, followed by a community-wide king cake party at Lakeside Mall on Feb. 15.
The following month, a bicentennial-themed Senior Expo will take place at the Alario Center on March 20, and a "Park to Park" 10K run will happen March 22 at Lafreniere Park.
Festivities for the parish's 200th birthday will come to a close June 14 with the Bicentennial Ball at Lakeside Mall, hosted by the Jefferson Community Foundation. Lee Sheng said she wanted parish events to involve the entire community and asked residents and local business owners to get involved.
"I want our bicentennial to feel like everybody's a part of it," Lee Sheng said in her address.
