NATIONAL NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE DAY
National Native American Heritage Day on the day after Thanksgiving honors American Indians across the nation. The day celebrates the vibrant cultures, traditions, and heritages while recognizing Native Americans' many contributions.
The day encourages listening to Native American voices and fostering pride in the vibrant and layered heritage embedded deep within our society.
In the United States today, Native Americans contribute to society daily. Whether through art or government, their insight and perspective elevate an art form or a district. They serve in the military, the medical, and legal fields. Their knowledge wins battles large and small.
Carol Metcalf-Gardipe - Geologist
Ms. Gardipe's many roles include director of the American Indian Engineering Program (the first of its kind) and one of seven founders of the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES). She is also a professor, administrator, and an award-winning geologist who held positions with the U.S. Geological Survey, National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration.
Lila Downs - Musician
The Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter immigrated from Oaxaca, Mexico, and has been singing since she was eight years old. While her Latin style speaks to a global audience, her music also has heavy jazz influences.
Deb Haaland (Rep-D)
Representative Haaland was elected to Congress in 2019 from New Mexico's 1st District. She has served on the Armed Services Committee and Natural Resources Committee. Both parents served in the U.S. Military. Her father was in the Marines, and her mother was in the Navy.
Emory Sekaquaptewa - Anthropologist
Hopi linguist, anthropologist, scholar, educator, artist, and appellate court judge Emory Sekaquaptewa is best known for developing the first Hopi language dictionary.
Master Sgt. Woodrow W. Keeble
In 2008, Keeble became the first full-blooded Sioux Indian to receive the Medal of Honor. During a battle in the Korean War, his actions saved the lives of fellow Soldiers. He was born in 1917 in Waubay, SD, but spent most of his life growing up near Wahpeton, ND. As the war heated up in Europe, Keeble joined the North Dakota National Guard in 1942. His service included World War II, the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He earned the Distinguished Service Cross, the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, two Purple Hearts, and the Combat Infantryman Badge in addition to the Medal of Honor.

egregious Pronunciation: ɪˈɡriːdʒəs
Definition: outstandingly bad, shocking, or appalling
Origin: The word "egregious" comes from the Latin word "egregius," meaning "distinguished" or "eminent." However, over time, the word's meaning shifted to describe something that is outstandingly bad or shocking.
Example: The company's treatment of its employees was egregious, with long hours, low pay, and no benefits.
Remarkable is not the answer to "What does egregious mean?" Remarkable means something worthy of attention or extraordinary. While both "egregious" and "remarkable" are adjectives that describe something notable, they are not interchangeable. If someone were to use "remarkable" as a synonym for "egregious," it would be a misuse of the word.

Whether seen on HBO’s Treme or at their legendary Tuesday night gig, Grammy-winning Rebirth Brass Band is a true New Orleans institution. Formed in 1983 by the Frazier brothers, the band has evolved from playing the streets of the French Quarter to playing festivals and stages all over the world. While committed to upholding the tradition of brass bands, they’ve also extended themselves into the realms of funk and hip-hop to create their signature sound. “Rebirth can be precise whenever it wants to,” says The New York Times, “but it’s more like a party than a machine. It’s a working model of the New Orleans musical ethos: as long as everybody knows what they’re doing, anyone can cut loose.” In the wake of the sometimes- stringent competition amongst New Orleans brass bands, Rebirth is the undisputed leader of the pack, and they show no signs of slowing down.

MAIZE DAY
Maize Day, on the day after Thanksgiving, recognizes the importance of a plant common across the Americas.
The day is set aside for all Americans, regardless of heritage, to celebrate corn's traditional role on the North American continent.
While other plant life was transplanted and imported, corn was common across the Americas. It was a central food source used by all the nations and an essential part of their everyday diet. The day also celebrates the traditional crops and foods of Native Americans.
There are many varieties of maize. Depending on the kind of maize, it may make delicious corn tortillas. Others are best roasted and eaten on the cob. And of course, some kinds of maize make perfect popping corn.

November 29th Celebrated History
1942
During World War II, coffee rationing begins due to growing demand. Coffee drinkers reduced their intake by pouring less into their cups. They also stretched the coffee they had by reusing the grounds and making a weaker brew. Another method to stretch their supply included grinding chicory root into their coffee grounds before they brewed their coffee.

🎄🎄 Colyton, old pictures
On July 25, 1945, Albert H. Luke, an instructor at the Sheil School in Chicago, Illinois, stands at the center as he advises a student operating the controls of a preflight trainer known as the "penguin." This innovative device was designed to give flight students a sense of the basic movements and sensations of flying without actually leaving the ground. The penguin simulated the physical experience of flight, allowing students to get accustomed to handling an aircraft before taking to the skies.
The Sheil School, known for its aviation training programs during the 1940s, was at the forefront of preparing pilots for both civilian and military aviation. The penguin, a key training tool, allowed instructors like Luke to provide hands-on lessons in a controlled environment. It helped students gain confidence in their abilities to control an aircraft, understanding key maneuvers like turns, climbs, and descents before stepping into a real cockpit.
The photograph captures an important moment in aviation training history, highlighting how instructors and students adapted to the challenges of flight education during World War II. With the demand for trained pilots soaring, tools like the penguin played a crucial role in teaching the fundamentals of flight safely and effectively. Albert H. Luke's guidance reflects the dedication of aviation educators during a time when rapid advancements in technology and an urgent need for skilled pilots were transforming the field of aviation.

⚜️⚜️The Dornier Do X, introduced in 1929, was an engineering marvel and the largest "flying boat" of its time. With an impressive wingspan of 157 feet (48 meters) and a length of 130 feet (40 meters), it was a true behemoth in the skies. Designed by the German aviation company Dornier, the aircraft was powered by 12 engines, giving it the ability to carry up to 169 passengers across long distances over water, a significant leap forward in air travel at the time.
Powered by multiple engines and built to travel long distances over water, the Do X represented the pinnacle of aviation design in the late 1920s. It was used primarily for transatlantic flights, serving as a luxurious mode of transportation for wealthy passengers. The massive flying boat could accommodate 169 passengers, offering a level of comfort and luxury that was unmatched by most other forms of air travel at the time. Its sheer size and weight, however, posed significant challenges in terms of performance, including limited speed and maneuverability.
Despite its remarkable size and technical achievements, the Dornier Do X’s commercial success was limited. While it captured the public’s imagination and represented the future of air travel, its operational costs were high, and it was ultimately deemed inefficient for regular commercial use. The Do X made a few notable flights but was retired after just a few years. Nevertheless, it remains a symbol of the bold, ambitious era of early aviation and an iconic example of the ingenuity that defined the 1920s in the world of aviation.

Welcome to the home of the Norco Civic Association Christmas Parade -- the Greatest Show on Asphalt! (There is also a very nice Christmas parade in Norco, California. This is not it!)
The Norco Christmas Parade rolls the first Sunday of every December to usher in the holiday season to the River Parishes. The theme of this year's parade is "Norco Noel: Santa Goes to the Olympics!"
The original parade ran from the 1950s through the 1980s before it was discontinued. In 2001, a group of residents, including Norco native Stephen Weber, revived the parade. It has rolled almost every year since with a variety of themes. We had to cancel twice for inclement weather, once because of the Covid-19 pandemic and, in 2021, because of damage to our town from Hurricane Ida.
Our parade has grown to nearly 70 entries, including floats, trucks, cars, pageant queens, civic groups, schools, dancing groups and marching bands. We have welcomed the 610 Stompers, the St. Augustine Marching 100, Boudreaux and Clothilde, and the U.S. Navy band as we have celebrated music and movies, River Parishes traditions, Veterans, the Super Bowl, elections and first responders.
The old Norco Christmas parade rolls on River Road.
The parade begins at 1 p.m. at River Road and Apple Street, travels east to Good Hope Street, turns north on Sixth Street, then travels south on Apple Street and disbands at River Road. After the parade, Santa will be available to take FREE photos at the Community Christmas tree, located at the Veterans Memorial on Apple Street.
Parade participants are strongly encouraged to incorporate the overall theme of the parade in floats, costumes, and decorations. Each participant must submit an entry form and an entry fee of $50. Vehicles must provide proof of insurance.

Starts at The Contemporary Arts Center!
6-7pm Intro to Swing
For total beginners to swing dancing or dancing of any kind. Also for those looking to refresh their basics and learn some ragtime dances. We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.
7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level
This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.

Comedy House New Orleans
The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)
CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)
609-610 Fulton St
New Orleans, LA 70130
Mon,December 2
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

New Orleans holiday parade 2024 will fill the streets with hot-air balloons. See the details.
Children's Hospital sponsors this procession, featuring Frosty, Rudolph and more.

For the third year, the Children’s Hospital New Orleans Holiday Parade will get the yuletide season rolling, Crescent City style. With 30 themed floats, ridden by costumers tossing a blizzard of throws, plus 27 bands and marching groups, the parade is like a preview of Carnival. But there’s a difference.
No other New Orleans procession includes giant lighter-than-air balloons, bobbing along the route amid the other attractions. In the past two years, a 40-foot Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer, a gargantuan candy cane, a snowflake, a gingerbread man, a Hanukkah ornament and Frosty the Snowman have floated over the crowds.
This year, parade producer Barry Kern promises there will be a few new balloons in the mix. In addition to floats bearing a red toy train, a Christmas alligator and Santa on his sled, Kern said parade-goers should look for giant self-propelled snow globes this year.
The parade rolls through the French Quarter and the Central Business District at 11 a.m. on Dec. 7.
Patients at Children’s Hospital are creating custom-decorated plastic ornaments that will serve as signature throws this year. Each ornament will be marked with the patient’s name.
Rolling fundraiser
Unlike the Mardi Gras season, during which commercial advertising is prohibited, the floats in the holiday parade are sponsored by businesses and organizations. All proceeds from the commercial tie-ins benefit Children’s Hospital. WDSU television plans a telethon-style broadcast to accompany the event.
With support from the state’s Explore Louisiana tourism campaign, the parade is meant to help promote New Orleans as a holiday season destination, according to parade organizers.
Grinchy power lines and rain
The first two Children’s Hospital Holiday Parades succeeded despite complications. During the first parade, the hovering balloons were forced to limbo beneath streetcar power lines on St. Charles Avenue, slowing the procession. The problem led to a new route in the second year. Rain pelted the 2023 parade, though the event still drew crowds.
Unlike in past years, there will be no post-parade party in Lafayette Square.
The parade will line up on Elysian Fields Avenue near Washington Square Park. It will proceed uptown on North Peters Street, merge onto Decatur Street, turn right on Canal Street, U-turn at Burgundy Street, turn right on Tchoupitoulas Street, ending at Andrew Higgins Drive.

Super Bowl LIX may happen more than three weeks before Fat Tuesday, but the host committee wants to make sure the city -- and the throngs of visitors in town for the NFL's championship game -- get the carnival experience.
The day before the game, February 8, there will be a Mardi Gras-style parade complete with elaborate floats, marching bands, and throws.
Our partners at NOLA.com report details of the parade are still being finalized, but float-builder Barry Kern says it will likely be a 20-float parade made up of signature floats from various krewes.
And because it is not an official carnival parade, corporate sponsors will also be a part of it.
Todd Graves, founder of Baton Rouge-based Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, will serve as grand marshal.
Rather than follow one of the traditional Mardi Gras routes, the Super Bowl parade will line up on Elysian Fields in the Marigny, parade up Decatur Street along the French Quarter, then take Tchoupitoulas St. to Poydras, turn up to St. Charles Ave., then proceed along St. Charles to St. Joseph St. just before reaching Harmony Circle.

Just two days after Super Bowl LIX, Jefferson Parish will celebrate its 200th birthday on Feb. 11. Bicentennial festivities kicked off at the State of Jefferson address Tuesday with the unveiling of the official poster, depicting a pelican before the Mississippi River in vivid pink and blue hues. It is illustrated by Louisiana artist Becky Fos, known for designing the 2023 state "I Voted" sticker, modeled after the Louisiana state flag.
A limited supply of signed and numbered posters can be purchased for $150, with proceeds going toward the Jefferson Community Foundation.
Courtesy of Jefferson Parish
The parish will celebrate the bicentennial on Feb. 11 with a Light the Night event, followed by a community-wide king cake party at Lakeside Mall on Feb. 15.
The following month, a bicentennial-themed Senior Expo will take place at the Alario Center on March 20, and a "Park to Park" 10K run will happen March 22 at Lafreniere Park.
Festivities for the parish's 200th birthday will come to a close June 14 with the Bicentennial Ball at Lakeside Mall, hosted by the Jefferson Community Foundation. Lee Sheng said she wanted parish events to involve the entire community and asked residents and local business owners to get involved.
"I want our bicentennial to feel like everybody's a part of it," Lee Sheng said in her address.
