NATIONAL PARENTS AS TEACHERS DAY
National Parents as Teachers Day on November 8th encourages Parent Teachers Organizations and parents to join forces to support children in their educational goals.
Parents as Teachers Organizations offer educational services to parents across the country. These affiliates give all parents of young children support, and it also provides information so all children learn, grow and develop to realize their full potential.
The concept for Parents as Teachers developed in the 1970s in Missouri. There, educators noted that children were beginning kindergarten with varying levels of school readiness. Research showed that greater parent involvement is a critical link in the child’s development of learning skills, including reading and writing.
The day provides parents with tools, resources, and support to guide them and their children.

Hurricane Rafael strengthens back to Category 3 storm while stirring in Gulf of Mexico
Hurricane Rafael gained momentum in the Gulf of Mexico Friday morning and returned to its powerful Category 3 status, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.
The storm had maximum sustained winds of 120 mph and was moving west at 9 mph. Though Rafael is expected to bring minimal impact to Louisiana, the storm could bring "life-threatening" surf and rip current conditions to the Gulf Coast in the next several days, forecasters said in a 7 a.m. update.
Local forecasters with the National Weather Service in Slidell said coastal areas of Louisiana could see minor to moderate coastal flooding through the weekend and a coastal flood advisory as been issued for much of Louisiana's coastlines.
From the National Hurricane Center.
The east-central and southeastern portions of Gulf, including waters near Key West, Florida, were experiencing scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms from Rafael Friday morning.
Some fluctuations in the storm's intensity are likely. Rafael is forecast to steadily weaken Friday evening into the weekend, forecasters said. While moving westward to north-westward over the central Gulf, the forward speed of the hurricane is expected to decrease.
Interests near the southern and southwestern Gulf are encouraged to monitor Rafael.

Katy Perry to headline Endymion Mardi Gras post-parade party in New Orleans' Superdome
"A mass tailgate party for 20,000 people in formal wear"
Pop diva Katy Perry will headline the Krewe of Endymion’s enormous post-parade party on March 1 in the Superdome, according to a post Friday on Endymion's Facebook page.
With a punchy vocal style and a tongue-in-cheek persona, Perry emerged into national stardom in 2008 with the catchy, comic dance tune “I Kissed a Girl.” She went on to a record-setting career, with high profile appearances including the 2015 Superbowl halftime show. She wowed the New Orleans Jazz Fest in 2019.
Perry is also a popular media personality, having served as judge for seven seasons on American Idol.
Joining Perry will be the band Train, a San Francisco pop rock band led by charismatic lead singer Pat Monahan.
The Endymion parade, which rolls from Mid-City to the Superdome on the Saturday before Mardi Gras, is one of Carnival’s most spectacular processions. But for members and music lovers, the parade is only the beginning.
The arrival of the armada of floats at the Dome marks the start of the krewe’s annual Extravaganza, which Times-Picayune reporter Keith Spera once described as “a mass tailgate party for 20,000 people in formal wear.” The centerpiece of the blowout is topflight pop entertainers.

STAFF PHOTO BY SCOTT THRELKELD
Endymion’s musical connection can be traced to the late founder Ed Muniz, who made a fortune with a string of regional radio stations, including local powerhouses Lite 105 and Kool 95.7. Over the years, the Endymion Extravaganza entertainers have included Tonight Show trumpeter Doc Severinsen, pioneer Goth rocker Alice Cooper, Kiss, Charo, Neil Sedaka, Dolly Parton, Britney Spears, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rod Stewart, Lionel Richie, Flo Rida, and too many others to mention.
Tickets to the Extravaganza are available at the Endymion office at (504) 736-0160.

Veal shanks are the traditional meat for osso buco, and probably what you're familiar with seeing on restaurant menus. But the shank portion of several animals can benefit from this same preparation. You'll want to use shanks for this; otherwise it's not osso bucco.

New Orleans restaurant from acclaimed Charleston team is opening. Here's what to know
The Bell has British pub vibes, a big patio on Esplanade Avenue
BY IAN MCNULTY
-
The Bell is a restaurant with British pub inspirations and a large patio in New Orleans. (Staff photo by Ian McNulty, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune)
Back in his home base of Charleston, South Carolina, it’s a big deal when Brooks Reitz opens a new restaurant. The three operates there are well regarded and have drawn national attention. Now he’s about to open his first restaurant in New Orleans, and anticipation is high.
Last spring, Reitz and his business partners took over the colorful old cottage at 3125 Esplanade Ave., near the Fair Grounds and City Park. It’s been home to different restaurants through the years, most recently the Post and earlier Nonna Mia.
Now it’s opening as the Bell with a much different identity and style, merging modern tavern with British pub.
The Bell is slated to open by Friday after the customary trial run this week (check for schedule updates here).
The stylings of a British pub are emblazoned all over the new restaurant, from the short-legged stools in the bar room to Union Jack flags strung from the ceiling and contemporary British themed art on the walls.
While the design is unmistakably British, the feel is more cheeky than prim and proper. It’s more Sgt. Pepper than Downton Abbey.
“The whole idea is just to have this be a fun place where you can go crush some Guinness, have a sandwich, have a good time,” Reitz said.
On the menu
The bar is indeed pouring Guinness on tap and frozen gin and tonics among its specialties.
On the menu, there’s a crispy fish sandwich and a steak sandwich, a fishmonger’s pie, and a pork chop. Fried mussels on the half shell, broiled oysters, onion and carrot fritters and crudités kick things off.
The old house still has the contours of a home between its small chambers and many architectural details.
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
The doors, embedded with stained glass, open to a casual bar area with a small dining room attached for conventional restaurant service.
Patio plans
A big part of the Bell, though, is outside. A large patio has long part of this property, though rarely has its potential felt fully realized. That seems primed to change with the Bell.
With fresh landscaping and string lights overhead, it has all the makings for a good spot to knock back drinks and snacks al fresco in a neighborhood that
Reitz says there’s a “phase 2” in the works for the patio as well. The plan calls for a horseshoe-shaped oyster bar in the back of the patio, with beer on tap and a canopy above. This piece of the puzzle could materialize in the next few months.
Charleston track record
Rietz operates three restaurants in close proximity to each other in Charleston – Leon’s Oyster Shop, Little Jack’s Tavern and Melfi’s – as well as the event space the Oyster Shed.
Little Jack’s Tavern, home of a much-loved burger, was on the lists of best new restaurants from Southern Living and Bon Appetit after its debut in 2016.
Leon’s, which has a specialty in fried chicken, oysters and Champagne, was a nominee for the James Beard award for outstanding hospitality in 2020. Melfi’s, the newest of the bunch, is an Italian restaurant for fresh pasta and wood-fired pizza.
Bringing a British-inflected concept to New Orleans comes in part through Rietz’s business partners, Tim Mink and Andrew Bell, who each have close family ties to England and who each now live in New Orleans. The Esplanade Avenue property itself and its neighborhood setting sealed the deal, Reitz said.

NATIONAL CAPPUCCINO DAY
National Cappuccino Day on November 8th whips up a frothy, hot cup of cappuccino. It's a perfect drink on a frosty morning, meeting with friends or just to enjoy a creamy cuppa.
Traditionally prepared with espresso, hot milk, and steamed milk foam, a cappuccino is an Italian coffee drink.
The word cappuccino comes from the Capuchin friars and is the diminutive form of cappuccio in Italian, meaning hood or something that covers the head. This popular coffee beverage got its name not from the hood on their habits but from the color of the hooded robes that the friars wore. (The Capuchin friars is an Order of friars in the Catholic Church, among the chief offshoots of the Franciscans.)
- In 1945, Achille Gaggia invented the modern espresso machine which further popularized the cappuccino.
- Mid-1990s – Cappuccino was made more widely available to North Americans as upscale coffee houses sprang up.
- Late 1990s to Early 2000s – Cappuccinos became popular in the United States concurrent with the boom in the American coffee industry.
- The start of the 21st Century – A modified short-cut version of the cappuccino started being served at fast-food chains.
- While steaming the milk you must pay close attention to attain the correct ratio of foam, thus making the cappuccino one of the most difficult espresso-based beverages to make properly.
- A skilled barista may create artistic shapes while he/she is pouring milk on top of the espresso coffee.

1910

Ancient History reels
The mysterious Mayan Palenque Astronaut has captured the imagination of many scholars and enthusiasts alike. Depicted on the lid of Pakal the Great's sarcophagus in Palenque, this figure has sparked discussions of extraterrestrial connections to the Mayan civilization.
Could this intricate carving truly represent an ancient astronaut navigating a spacecraft, suggesting a deeper connection to beings beyond our world?

Timeless Recreation
The tradition of deep-frying chicken in Scotland, which was brought to the United States by Scottish immigrants, has its roots in the country's culinary practices of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Scots have a long history of frying foods, with recipes often including methods like frying in fat or oil. This method of cooking, particularly for poultry, was a practical choice for Scots due to the availability of animal fats and the efficient cooking it provided. By the time Scottish immigrants began arriving in the U.S., they carried with them their culinary traditions, including their penchant for deep-frying.
In the United States, this tradition melded with local tastes and available ingredients, leading to the popularization of deep-fried chicken in Southern cuisine. As the practice became more widespread, particularly in the Southern states, it evolved into a staple of American comfort food, characterized by its crispy exterior and tender interior. Over time, deep-fried chicken became an iconic dish in American cuisine, with roots traceable back to Scottish culinary influences. The tradition exemplifies how immigrant foods can adapt and thrive in new cultural contexts, contributing to the diverse tapestry of American food traditions.

Brad Williams
Get ready to laugh till your sides ache
WIlliams’ show offers a fresh perspective on life's quirks, cleverly navigating through his experiences as a little person, relationships, and everyday situations. His humorous and inspiring observations on disability, relationships, sex, and race consistently win over audiences; proving anyone can overcome their shortcomings. His high energy live performances frequently produce standing ovations from audience members which prompted the late Robin Williams to call him “Prozac with a head.”
Williams has parlayed his live performances into a multitude of stand-up television appearances, including The Tonight Show, Dave Attell’s Comedy Underground, and Jimmy Kimmel Live. His first one-hour special, Fun Size, was the highest rated special on Showtime, and a year later, he followed that up with his second one, Daddy Issues, which was even more successful than the first. His third special in three years was an uproarious one, hosting some of the edgiest comedians in the country from the prestigious Montreal Just For Laughs Festival. His last groundbreaking special on Netflix, The Degenerates, garnered more huge ratings and rave reviews. Also an accomplished actor, Williams has appeared on numerous TV shows and feature films, including FX’s Legit, Sam and Cat, Mind of Mencia, Pitboss, a recurring role on the Hulu original show Deadbeat, and memorable roles in a plethora of movies, including Little Evil, produced by Scott Stuber (Ted), as well as the Netflix original Christopher Guest film, Mascots, and most recently Reno 911: It’s A Wonderful Heist.

The New Orleans restaurant scene may be world famous, but to locals, it’s deeply personal. We keep maître d’s on speed dial, our favorite servers know our birthdays, and the corner market leaves the pickles off our po’boys. Join culinary historian Jessica B. Harris to learn about the history of New Orleans restaurants at the HNOC’s 2024 Food Forum: New Orleans Restaurants through History, presented by Chef Paul Prudhomme's Magic Seasoning Blends in partnership with the New Orleans Tourism and Cultural Fund, Oceana Grill, and Big Easy Whiskey.
Food historians, restaurateurs, chefs, and culture bearers will explore the rich history of our restaurants and how they influence today’s emerging food scene. Beloved chefs from local featured restaurants will serve up a tasting menu with cocktail pairings at a Food Fête immediately following the forum.
Following the day’s sessions, the Food Fête will offer guests signature tastes from local historic neighborhood restaurants curated by local food writer Megan Braden-Perry and an open bar including wine, champagne, and signature cocktails created by Eve Marie Haydel, Dooky Chase’s mixologist. The Food Fête is included in the ticket price for session attendees. Food Fête tickets may be purchased separately for $20.
Taste history at a private lunch at Antoine’s Restaurant. Antoine’s is the oldest restaurant in the United States that has been continuously run by the same family. Rick Blount, great-great grandson of Antoine Alciatore, will oversee the creation of a historic menu while marketing director Lisa Blount will share family stories and discuss the recent donation of the restaurant’s papers to the HNOC. This optional activity has an additional charge of $75 and seats are limited.

LSU football's matchup against Alabama on Nov. 9 will kickoff at 6:30 p.m. on ABC, the Southeastern Conference
This will be the second consecutive game LSU will play on ABC in primetime.
LSU faced Alabama at the same time the past two seasons. Last seasons game was on CBS.
The Crimson Tide took down LSU 42-28 in Tuscaloosa a year ago after the Tigers upset Alabama in Baton Rouge in 2022, 32-31 in overtime.
Alabama leads the all-time series against LSU with a 56-27-5 record. It has won 13 of the past 15 head-to-head matchups.
The Tigers lost their second game of the year this past weekend to Texas A&M, falling 38-23 in College Station.
LSU held a 17-7 lead at halftime but three interceptions from redshirt junior quarterback Garrett Nussmeier and the Aggies switching quarterbacks — replacing Conner Weigman with Marcel Reed — jolted a 31-6 run for Texas A&M in the second

Hoagy Carmichael sported the easy-going, everyman demeanor and philosophy of America’s heartland. Musician, composer, actor and writer Hoagy was one of the most successful entertainers of the 1930s and 40s. He recorded hundreds of songs, and several are most popular in the American songbook: Stardust, Heart and Soul, Georgia and The Nearness of You. Throw in In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening, Lazy Bones, Skylark, Ole Buttermilk Sky, Up the Lazy River and get set for a historically and musically entertaining evening.
Join Heidi, John, Paul, Rich, Alden, Dave, and Phil as we close out our Fall Songwriters Series with three nights of Hoagy’s music. Add the comedy of Chris Champagne under the stars of Monkey Hill and … “that old Rockin’ Chair won’t get ya.”

Join the award-winning (1st place, baby!) NOLA Jitterbugs for a 6-week series with live music in the last class!
Our live music classes with local musicians and culture bearers, as well as our overall emphasis on music appreciation is what makes our lessons stand out among the rest!
Starts at The Contemporary Arts Center!
6-7pm Intro to Swing
For total beginners to swing dancing or dancing of any kind. Also for those looking to refresh their basics and learn some ragtime dances. We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.
7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level
This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.
No partner required to take either of these classes. Come alone or with friends!

Comedy House New Orleans
The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)
CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)
609-610 Fulton St
New Orleans, LA 70130
Mon,November 11
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

Billy Nungesser Lt. Governor of Louisiana
For the fourth consecutive year, Louisiana will showcase its vibrant culture in the 2025 Tournament of Rose Parade in Pasadena, California! This year’s float, featuring a Louisiana alligator adorned with beads, a Cajun dance hall, and pots of boiled seafood, perfectly captures the essence of a “Louisiana Saturday Night.” Plus, enjoy mid-parade entertainment by rising country star Timothy Wayne!
We can’t wait to share Louisiana’s celebratory spirit and unique culture with the world once again.

Super Bowl LIX may happen more than three weeks before Fat Tuesday, but the host committee wants to make sure the city -- and the throngs of visitors in town for the NFL's championship game -- get the carnival experience.
The day before the game, February 8, there will be a Mardi Gras-style parade complete with elaborate floats, marching bands, and throws.
Our partners at NOLA.com report details of the parade are still being finalized, but float-builder Barry Kern says it will likely be a 20-float parade made up of signature floats from various krewes.
And because it is not an official carnival parade, corporate sponsors will also be a part of it.
Todd Graves, founder of Baton Rouge-based Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, will serve as grand marshal.
Rather than follow one of the traditional Mardi Gras routes, the Super Bowl parade will line up on Elysian Fields in the Marigny, parade up Decatur Street along the French Quarter, then take Tchoupitoulas St. to Poydras, turn up to St. Charles Ave., then proceed along St. Charles to St. Joseph St. just before reaching Harmony Circle.

Just two days after Super Bowl LIX, Jefferson Parish will celebrate its 200th birthday on Feb. 11. Bicentennial festivities kicked off at the State of Jefferson address Tuesday with the unveiling of the official poster, depicting a pelican before the Mississippi River in vivid pink and blue hues. It is illustrated by Louisiana artist Becky Fos, known for designing the 2023 state "I Voted" sticker, modeled after the Louisiana state flag.
A limited supply of signed and numbered posters can be purchased for $150, with proceeds going toward the Jefferson Community Foundation.

The parish will celebrate the bicentennial on Feb. 11 with a Light the Night event, followed by a community-wide king cake party at Lakeside Mall on Feb. 15.
The following month, a bicentennial-themed Senior Expo will take place at the Alario Center on March 20, and a "Park to Park" 10K run will happen March 22 at Lafreniere Park.
Festivities for the parish's 200th birthday will come to a close June 14 with the Bicentennial Ball at Lakeside Mall, hosted by the Jefferson Community Foundation. Lee Sheng said she wanted parish events to involve the entire community and asked residents and local business owners to get involved.
"I want our bicentennial to feel like everybody's a part of it," Lee Sheng said in her address.
