NATIONAL SAUSAGE PIZZA DAY
Food lovers across the country enjoy National Sausage Pizza Day on October 11 each year. Whether served on a thin or thick crust, sausage pizza goes well with other toppings, too. Don't hesitate to add mushrooms and a variety of cheeses. What's even better about sausage pizza are the different kinds of sausage to choose from.
While Italian sausage may be preferred, try experimenting. Add more garlic or try additional spice. Try smoky sausages such as chorizo or even a kielbasa visit with your local butcher for sausage suggestions. They've probably been smoking up the latest experiment just for you to try.
Sausage comes in many combinations, too. Lighter forms and different ages offer flavors that complement our toppings. A little sweet with the savory creates a modern taste experience.
Sautéd onions add amazing flavor to sausage pizza. While cooking up the onions add a few portabella mushrooms to the pan. Once you've added them to your pizza, sprinkle the top with feta cheese and fresh basil. You won't regret it.

Abrogate is the word used to describe the act of removing or abolishing something, especially by authority. It comes from the Latin word "abrogare" which means to repeal or annul. Abrogation is the act of officially and formally declaring something no longer valid or in effect. This can be done through a law, a contract, or a decision made by a higher authority. Abrogation can also refer to the complete elimination of something, like a law or a tradition. Abrogation is often done when something is deemed to be outdated or no longer beneficial. Abrogation is a powerful tool and should be used with caution. | | | |
Why Yom Kippur Is a Joyous Holiday
Jewish texts portray Yom Kippur as a serious day of repentance and reflection — but not one of sadness.
By Abby Seitz
It’s easy to mistake Yom Kippur for a somber occasion. Many of the traditions observed on Yom Kippur — abstaining from eating, drinking, and marital relations, or swapping out leather shoes for sneakers or Crocs — are also prohibited on Tisha B’Av, the saddest day of the Jewish calendar, and other days of communal mourning. Unlike many Jewish holidays, it isn’t exactly commonplace to wish your loved ones a “happy Yom Kippur.”
But Jewish texts don’t see the Day of Atonement as a sad day at all. In fact, Yom Kippur is described as one of the two happiest days of the year, rivaling only Tu B’Av, the Jewish celebration of love (Mishnah Taanit 4:8).
When is Yom Kippur 2024? Click here to find out.
The main reason for this is connected to the overarching theme of Yom Kippur: repentance. The central prayers of the day — the haunting Kol Nidre, the confessional Viddui (recited while gently striking the heart), and Unetaneh Tokef among them — push us to acknowledge and atone for our transgressions, and carry a serious and somber tone. But it is precisely the promise of forgiveness that makes the day one of joy.
“Yom Kippur is a day of joy, because it is a day of pardon and forgiveness, and moreover, it is the day on which the last pair of tablets were given,” the Talmud teaches in Bava Batra 121a. (The Talmud also understands Yom Kippur to be the day that God presented the Israelites with the second set of tablets after Moses shattered the first.) According to the Midrash, the day is also one of joy for God, who gave Yom Kippur to the Jewish people with “great love and joy.” The Midrash continues, saying that God exclaims to the mountains: “Celebrate with Me! Let all rejoice, for I am forgiving Israel’s sins!” (Seder Eliyahu Rabbah). Maimonides described the day as the “climax of forgiveness.”
With regard to what is perhaps the best-known custom associated with Yom Kippur — fasting — the Talmud (Shabbat 119a) teaches that fasting is required as a way to honor God, rather than as an expression of grief. The festive meal traditionally eaten before Yom Kippur begins is further proof of this, according to Yona of Girona, a 12th-century Spanish sage, who wrote: “On all holidays we have a meal to express joy in the performance of the mitzvah of Yom Kippur, but since we must fast on Yom Kippur, we are obligated to have a meal on Erev Yom Kippur in order to express our joy.” (Shaarei Teshuvah 4:9)
Even though it’s easy to assume that abstaining from many of the things that typically bring us joy is meant to invoke misery, Jewish tradition suggests otherwise. The many prohibitions on the Day of Atonement allow us to disconnect from the material world and focus on repair and repentance for our sins. While owning up to our spiritual wrongdoings can feel daunting, there is great joy to be found in knowing that God sees the opportunity to forgive as nothing short of a celebration.

Croatia has a rich wine culture that stretches back over 2,500 years, rooted in ancient traditions passed down from the Illyrians, Greeks, and Romans. In recent years, Croatian wines have gained international acclaim for their quality and unique indigenous grape varieties, shaped by the country's diverse geography and climate. The country's wine regions are broadly divided into four key areas: Dalmatia, Istria and Kvarner, Slavonia and the Danube, and the Croatian Uplands. Each region offers its own distinctive characteristics, influenced by their varying climates, soils, and grape varieties.
Croatia is home to more than 130 indigenous grape varieties, many of which are unique to the country. Beyond Plavac Mali, Malvazija Istarska, and Graševina, other notable varieties include Vugava, a rare white grape from the island of Vis that produces full-bodied wines with tropical fruit notes, and Debit, a versatile white grape from Dalmatia used for both dry and sweet wines. Bogdanuša, from the island of Hvar, is another indigenous white variety traditionally associated with religious celebrations.
The styles of Croatian wines are as diverse as the regions themselves, ranging from refreshing dry whites to rustic, robust reds and even unique dessert wines - and recently, orange wines have been gaining popularity. Croatia’s rising reputation as a wine destination is enhanced by its beautiful wine regions, historic vineyards, and small, family-run wineries. Wine tourism, particularly in Istria, is thriving, with visitors exploring wine roads, sampling local food pairings, and visiting ancient vineyards set against breathtaking landscapes. This blend of tradition and innovation is helping Croatian wines make their mark on the global wine stage.
Sara Sparks from Lirette Selections will host this fun and informative tasting. Lirette Selections has made a big commitment to Croatian wines and has the largest portfolio in the state. We hope you'll join us! You can sign up here, Croatia

07:00 October 04, 2024
By: Charles Andre Blanchard
Celebrate the Spooky Season
Beginning October 10 and extending until November 2, attendees to Zombie Paintball can celebrate the Halloween season with a monstrous bang (and potentially satisfy their need for speed).
Festivities
This popular seasonal activity once again returns to the premier racing facility in Avondale, this time with an enhanced festival area and zombie-hunting scenes, courtesy of their new partnership with Mardi Gras Productions. The 20-minute experience includes a bus ride to designated target stations, where riders will test their accuracy and try to defeat all the zombie enemies. They are also given a chance to reload their guns and go back through the stations before finishing.
Guests can also explore nearby festivities to celebrate the Halloween season. Food trucks will be present, along with stations for pumpkin carving and face painting. Local craft vendors and more themed-attractions make this a great family-friendly stop this Halloween. For the adults, drink specials will also be offered on several days.
NOTE: The only targets are the zombies. Attendees will not be harmed or shot at. However, children under 12 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.
Pricing & Packages
General admission begins at $22 per person and includes a rental paintball gun and 150 rounds of ammo.
For $45, Guests can purchase the Zombie Paintball + Karting package, which includes the aforementioned rental gun and ammo but also an added go-kart session on the NOLA Motorsports track.
Have a large group? NOLA Motorsports also offers a $650 party package. With this, up to 28 people can skip the line and each receive a commemorative bandana before boarding a private bus and being given the accompanying rental guns and ammo.
For tickets, visit the NOLA Motorsports Park's box office or their website.

Officer Marcus Moscowicz is a small town policeman with dreams of making it to detective. With the nearest detective an hour away, Marcus jumps at the chance to prove his sleuthing skills – with the help of his silent partner, Lou. But whodunit? Did Dahlia Whitney, Arthur’s scene-stealing wife, give him a big finish? Is Barrette Lewis, the prima ballerina, the prime suspect? Did Dr. Griff, the overly-friendly psychiatrist, make a frenemy? Marcus only has a short amount of time to find the killer and make his name before the real detective arrives…and the ice cream melts!

DO YOU STILL REMEMBER YOUR GRANDPARENT'S PHONE NUMBER?
Remember these 10 things you don’t need to remember anymore?
Published on October 11, 2024
Credit: Eric Rothermel
If you were born more than 25 years ago you probably recall a time when you had to remember things like a phone number, an address, directions for going somewhere, birthdays, and many more things you don’t need to remember anymore. Technology helps us in a million different ways in our daily lives and one of the most frequent examples is the amount of things that it "memorizes" for us. Listed below you will find ten things that were once stored in our brains and have now been transferred to technological devices. Do you remember them?
1Phone numbers
Credit: Wesley Hilario
There was a time when everybody knew the telephone numbers they used the most.
It was the most common thing, knowing your close family members, friends, or even work telephone numbers. Maybe you even remember some of those numbers to this day.
Nowadays, since cell phones have become a universal and integral part of our world, nobody knows anybody’s phone number. We just trade contacts and look for their names whenever we need to make a call.
2Birthday and anniversary dates
Credit: Blessing Ri
Back in an age where with no social media, like Facebook, birthdays and anniversaries were dates usually remembered, or at least, marked in paper calendars. And, while we still remember the birthdays of our closest relatives and friends, most people rely on social media platforms like Facebook, to remind them of everybody else’s birthdays, or push notifications that simply pop up on our cell phone screens with the relevant information.
3Addresses
Credit: Eric Prouzet
Knowing an address number was a common thing back in the day when contact information was not a standardized thing readily accessible on our cell phones. It may be hard to understand in a day and age when most addresses are forwarded to us on WhatsApp messages, sometimes with a location pin even, but it was very normal to have to write down addresses on a piece of paper until you remembered them.
4Directions
Credit: Anna Pascale
Since we just mentioned addresses, there is no sense in beating around the bush with this and we must talk about another item on this list that is intrinsically connected with the former: directions.
There was a time when it was normal to carry around a city map if one was unfamiliar with the area or ask a stranger for directions. And, while some people still do those same things, most of us rely on the Maps location on our smartphone to guide us anywhere we go.
Who needs to memorize streets and corners beforehand when they can simply take their phone and ask to be guided with whichever voice they prefer?
5Appointment dates
Credit: BENCE BOROS
Some people still use them. Maybe you do too. Do you remember schedule diaries? People wrote their appointments in those books or maybe used little Post-it notes on their freezer doors and bathroom mirrors to remind them. And, when the day of the appointment came, they had to remain vigilant of the time and remember what was that they had to do and where.
These days, your smartphone will send you one or more reminders during the day, with directions if needed, possible departure times, and several recommendations.
6Passwords
Credit: rc.xyz NFT gallery
Granted, it was much more simpler to remember one or two passwords a couple of decades ago than the million ones we are required to create and remember these days. Back in the day, unless you were a spy or something of the sort, there weren’t that many passwords to recall. But the ones that we had, were usually stored in our heads, or maybe written down in little papers and folded into our wallets.
Nowadays, Google will recommend a password and offer the remember it, and auto-complete any instance when it is needed, so you don’t have to worry about it.
7To-do lists
Credit: Torbjørn Helgesen
Those crumpled pieces of paper stored in our pockets, containing shopping lists and things to do were an ubiquitous item in our lives. And, if the list was tragically forgotten at home, we had to try and remember whatever was on that list.
Once again, smartphones have replaced such lists with a very convenient notepad application that even reminds us to check it once in a while.
8Recipes and cooking times
Credit: Debby Hudson
Browsing through cookbooks, asking people for recipes, storing handwritten papers and magazine pages with recipes in notebooks, asking for the advice of more experienced cooks, and remembering quantities and procedures were common practices in an age before the internet and even more so, in an age before smartphones.
These days, all you have to do if you want to cook anything is look it up on your phone and a million different recipes, with detailed videos will pop up immediately. And, if you don’t have a kitchen timer, you can set up multiple simultaneous alarms on, again, your phone.
9Weather conditions
Credit: Jordan Ladikos
Waiting for the weatherman on the TV, or looking up the forecast in the newspaper, or asking somebody for a rain prediction were pretty much the only ways to know how the weather was going to behave in the following days.
It seems like the smartphone has come to solve this situation too, since all you have to do now is look into its permanently updated forecast to know how the weather is going to be in the next 10 days.
10Basic photographic camera operations
Credit: Alexander Andrews
In a day and age when a photographic camera was a separate device from a telephone, certain skills were necessary to handle it. Even an amateur aficionado needed to learn a thing or two about the focus, aperture, exposure, and a few other things before he or she was ready to go out into the world and take decent pictures.
These days, almost nobody owns a camera anymore. Most people just use the camera on their phones which requires a simple point-and-shoot attitude to the whole endeavor. Forget the ISO, composition, white balance, and all that. Your phone knows the procedure and will make sure all your pictures are perfect.

Nickel-A-Dance Fall 2024 Season to Begin on Frenchmen Street
by: OffBeat Staff
The fall 2024 season of Nickel-A-Dance, a beloved free traditional jazz concert series, is set to begin on September 29. For over three decades, Nickel-A-Dance has brought live jazz to the public, offering an afternoon of family-friendly entertainment on Sundays from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. This year, the series moves to a new location at Favela Chic, located at 525 Frenchmen Street, continuing its tradition on this famous music corridor.
Originally started in 1994, Nickel-A-Dance has become a staple for fans of New Orleans jazz who may not frequent nightclubs. It attracts a diverse crowd, including children, families, and seniors, all coming together to celebrate traditional jazz as America’s original dance music. This fall’s lineup will feature some of the city’s most renowned jazz musicians.
Next, on October 13, Mark Braud and His Sunday Night All-Stars will take the stage. Braud, part of the musical Brunious and Santiago families, has been a fixture in the New Orleans jazz scene since his youth. He has performed with Harry Connick Jr., Preservation Hall Jazz Band, and many other notable artists. His band will bring a blend of traditional jazz and contemporary flair to the series.
Lars Edegran and The Palm Court Jazz All-Stars are set to perform on October 20. Edegran, originally from Sweden, has been a New Orleans resident since 1966 and is known for his versatility on piano, guitar, and banjo. He has worked with jazz greats like Earl Hines and George Lewis, and his band will showcase the best of New Orleans traditional jazz.
The fall series will conclude on October 27 with Gregg Stafford and The Jazz Hounds. Stafford, a respected trumpeter and vocalist, has led several prominent New Orleans jazz bands, including Danny Barker’s Jazz Hounds and the Young Tuxedo Brass Band. He has dedicated his career to preserving the musical traditions of New Orleans and remains an active figure in the city’s jazz community.

Join the award-winning (1st place, baby!) NOLA Jitterbugs for a 6-week series with live music in the last class!

Starts at The Contemporary Arts Center!
6-7pm Intro to Swing
For total beginners to swing dancing or dancing of any kind. Also for those looking to refresh their basics and learn some ragtime dances. We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.
7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level
This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.

Comedy House New Orleans
The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)
CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)
609-610 Fulton St
New Orleans, LA 70130
Mon, September 30
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Exclusive Press/Media Sneak Peek: "Wasted: Overtourism & the French Quarter"
New Orleans, LA – [October 8, 2024] – VCPORA (Vieux Carré Property Owners, Residents, and Associates),
in partnership with acclaimed filmmaker Laura Cayouette, is proud to present an exclusive sneak peek
screening of the upcoming feature-length documentary, "Wasted: Overtourism & the French Quarter." This
highly anticipated film delves into the complex phenomenon of overtourism in New Orleans' iconic French
Quarter, offering an eye-opening examination of the area’s over-reliance on the tourism industry and the quest
for a sustainable balance.
Wasted was recently accepted by the prestigious Big Syn International Film Festival, a sustainability film
festival in London that aims to inspire people to act on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Media and press attendees will be treated to a first look at a powerful narrative that focuses on the post-
pandemic reality of the French Quarter, as well as strategies for fostering economic diversification, preserving
cultural authenticity, and reinvigorating local residency.
Media Screening Details:
• Date: Monday, October 14
th
, 2024
• Time: Doors open at 3:30 pm, screening begins at 4:00 pm and will be followed by a Q&A session with
the filmmaker and selected interviewees
• Location: Historic New Orleans Collection William’s Research Center, 410 Chartres Street
• Reserve your seat: Email info@vcpora.org
• Additional media inquiries: ErinHolmes@vcpora.org
About the Film:
Four years in the making, "Wasted" shines a light on New Orleans' fragile balance between residents and
visitors in a post-COVID world. Through intimate interviews with French Quarter residents, business owners,
and culture bearers, the documentary explores the benefits and harms imposed by unbridled visitor numbers on
the 300-year-old neighborhood.
"Overtourism isn't just a buzzword," says Cayouette, best known for her role as Lara Lee Candie-Fitzwilly in the
locally filmed Django Unchained. "It's a reality that communities across the world are grappling with, and
nowhere is this more evident than in the French Quarter. We need to find a way forward that doesn't sacrifice
our culture for short-term gain."
Featuring interviews with Derrick Tabb, Harry Shearer, Dianne Honoré, and other local historians and
culture bearers, the film aims to spark conversation around the growing global discourse on Sustainable
Tourism and the urgent need for action. This sneak peek is in advance of the film’s premiere at 6:30 p.m.
Tuesday, October 22
nd
at Le Petit Theatre, 616 St. Philip Street in the French Quarter. Tickets for the general
public will be available lepetittheatre.com.

Aah, October, when New Orleans wakes up again for the Long Party. We have two seasons here; the second one starts October 1 and ends sometime in June. The weather is cooler now, everybody’s settling into their fall schedule, and now it’s time to get out and do stuff.
This month for me is mostly events with The New Orleans Guitar Masters as part of the 2024 Across The Pond Guitar Festival. Jimmy Robinson puts it together and it’s a really interesting show.

This year adds fantastic venues: The Manship Theater in Baton Rouge, and The 100 Men Hall in Bay St. Louis. Guests this year are Gavino Loche from Sardinia, Italy, Adrian Raso from Guelph, Canada, Layla Musselwhite, and The New Orleans Guitar Masters with John Rankin, Jimmy Robinson and Cranston Clements.

Rougarou Fest Queen Embodies Louisiana Fifolet
The Rougarou Fest is proud to announce Mrs. Courtney Bennett will reign as the 2024 Rougarou Queen.
A native of Morgan City, and a resident of Houma since 1984, Courtney has been active and involved in gymnastics, cheering, dancing, and numerous music and art events in our community. She is the mother of two awesome children, Gavin, age 13, and Laurel, age 6. She has been married for 18 years to the love of her life, Garrett Bennett.
Courtney graduated from Nicholls State University with a degree in early childhood education. With that education and her creative passion, she spent many years working with children at the preschool at her church, with events at SOLA – a local children’s theatre, and as a dancer and instructor at Paddy Danos School of Dance. Because of her realization of her love of makeup and theater, she followed her creative dream and enrolled in cosmetology! Today she’s a hairstylist at Ambiance Salon in Houma.
Continuing her dreams of designing hair and make-up and ALWAYS a fan of dress up and costuming, she became involved in Rougarou Fest with Jonathan Foret. She has been a Rougarou witch for many years dancing the streets with her sister, Megan, and her fellow hairstylist and friend, Danae. She admits that the hours they spent doing witch make-up and costumes are just as fun as the parade. The first time she saw the Rougarou parade, she knew she had to be a part of it. It’s with her fellow witchy sisters, that she haunts the streets of Houma with their German witch dance.
She is very excited and appreciative to be able to take on this creative project and represent the festival as the 2024 Rougarou Queen. She looks forward to working with her longtime friend, Jonathan Foret, and his committee and volunteers. She encourages everyone to come out and enjoy everything the festival represents and has to offer!
Her costume is inspired by the story of the fifolet. In Louisiana folklore, the "fifolet" is a supernatural creature closely related to the "will-o'-the-wisp" found in other cultures. The fifolet is believed to be a type of mischievous spirit or fairy that appears as a glowing light, often seen floating over marshes, swamps, or other eerie, dark places.
Much like the will-o'-the-wisp, the fifolet is said to lead people astray, drawing them into dangerous or confusing situations. It’s often described as a trickster that lures travelers off their paths, playing with their sense of direction and perception. In some tales, encountering a fifolet might mean you're about to face some misfortune or get lost. The lore around fifolets reflects the rich tapestry of Cajun and Creole folklore, blending elements of European, African, and Native American traditions to create unique and localized myths.
The queen would like to thank her hair stylist and makeup artist, Dustin McElroy, and all the stylists at Ambiance Salon for helping make this possible. She would also like to thank Kathy Marmillion for creating her "Rougarou Queen" sash and the staff at Chez Lili Bridal for all of their hard work and support. She appreciates Dristy Foret Photography for beautifully capturing all of the hard work and talent that went into creating the fifolet-inspired queen. Most importantly, she would like to thank her husband and kids, along with all of her family and friends, for their love and support during the preparation to be the Rougarou Queen. And lastly, she thanks Jonathan Foret and the Rougarou Fest for the opportunity!
The Rougarou Fest is a family-friendly festival with a spooky flair that celebrates the rich folklore that exists along the bayous of Southeast Louisiana. It showcases live music, cultural activities, children’s activities, Cajun food, the Krewe Ga Rou parade, and so much more. All proceeds go to the South Louisiana Wetlands Discovery Center, a nonprofit organization that is revolutionizing how we think, teach and learn about Louisiana’s disappearing coast.
Each year a Rougarou Queen is selected to represent the festival at various events throughout the region. The queen is selected from our large team of volunteers by a committee of festival organizers. This ensures that our queen is aware of the details of our festival since she has been a part of bringing our event to life in previous years.
The Rougarou Queen will reign over the parade at 7PM Saturday, October 19, 2024.
