NATIONAL BLACK CAT DAY

Don't be superstitious on National Black Cat Day! October 27th celebrates the beauty of these sleek creatures. The day also seeks to raise awareness about the low adoption rates for black cats.

This time of year, many black cats may decorate many thresholds for Halloween and windows for spooky decor. However, these felines deserve the love and attention just as much as their tabby equivalents. Old notions have given these furry critters a bad reputation. The day is about turning that reputation around.

Their black canine counterparts also face similar adoption problems. So, it's not all about myth and mystery. However, increasing support for the black feline's plight is the goal of this companion holiday.

NAVY DAY | OCTOBER 27

Navy Day on October 27th salutes all of the military personnel who have served, both past and present, in the United States Navy.

The United States Navy (USN) is the naval warfare service branch of the United States Armed Forces and one of the seven uniformed services of the United States. The U.S. Navy currently stands as the largest, most powerful navy in the world, with the highest combined battle fleet tonnage. The service engages over 340,000 personnel on active duty and more than 71,000 in the Navy Reserve.

Navy History

Throughout the Revolutionary War, the Navy's importance grew. Today, the United States maintains 40 naval bases across the country, including the world’s largest Naval Station Norfolk, in Norfolk, Virginia.

Below the sea, submarines became a part of the Navy during World War II. While experiments began in the late 1800s and during the Civil War, they did not join a large part of the Navy inventory until World War II. At that point, subs became necessary for surveillance and rescue, even though they were also armed.

With the advent of the airplane, the Navy became vital stations for the Airforce as well. As a result, the Navy modified ships into floating landing strips. Today, joint Naval and Airbases such as Pearl Harbor-Hickam provided necessary fleets of the sea and air defense.

Theodore Roosevelt and the Navy

Between 1922 and 1972, the Navy celebrated its birthday on October 27th in honor of President Theodore Roosevelt's birth. He elevated the U.S. Navy to a premier fighting force. During his term as Assistant Secretary of the Navy, he built up the power and strength of the U.S. Navy. Roosevelt's pursuit of the naval aircraft advanced the U.S. Navy. As president, Roosevelt was the first president to submerge in a submarine and also the first to fly. His support of the Navy led the former Secretary of the Navy, John F. Lehman, to say, Theodore Roosevelt, "was one of the architects of our modern Navy."

NATIONAL FRANKENSTEIN FRIDAY

National Frankenstein Friday, on the last Friday in October, recognizes author Mary Shelly, the novel Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus, her characters, Dr. Frankenstein and the monster. Dating back to the 1800s, Frankenstein's monster is one of the best-known horror characters of all time.

The novel by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (1797-1851) tells the story of a young scientist, Victor Frankenstein. While she published the first edition of Frankenstein in 1818 anonymously, the first 500 copies sold out. However, the public believed her husband, Percy Shelley, to be the author. Then in 1823, Mary Shelley published a new edition under her name. Another edition in 1831 included Shelley's explanation about how the story came to be. This version is the one modern readers are the most familiar with today.

The film world has created more than 60 movies or shorts on the theme of Frankenstein. Edison Studios produced the very first film version, Frankenstein, in 1910.

According to some sources, the day is observed on August 30th in honor of Mary Shelley's birthday.

It was the week before Halloween, and Marie Laveau received a call from GW Fins. It was reported that there was going to be a party on Friday, October 27, 2023, and her "herbal remedies" were needed.

She sang and danced as she mixed up Empress gin, strawberry puree, Amaro Montenegro, lime juice, and simple syrup, and when she delivered the substance, she said "Y'all gonna have one funky good time!"

What does "garrulity" mean?

Excessive talkativeness

garrulity Pronunciation: guh-ROO-luh-tee

Definition: Excessive talkativeness or the tendency to talk excessively, often without much substance or relevance.

Origin: The word "garrulity" originates from the Latin word "garrulus," meaning "talkative." It entered the English language in the late 16th century.

Example: After a long day of work, Mary sought solace in her neighbor's peaceful garden, hoping to escape the garrulity of her chatty co-workers.

Excessive talkativeness is a common trait that can be described as garrulity. It refers to the tendency of an individual to talk incessantly, often without considering the impact on others or the relevance of their words. Those who exhibit garrulity may engage in lengthy monologues, dominate conversations, and struggle with listening skills. While being talkative can be positive in certain contexts, garrulity implies an excess that can lead to annoyance or hinder effective communication. It is essential to strike a balance between sharing thoughts and giving others the opportunity to contribute to a conversation.

Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein

comes to Jefferson Performing Arts Center just in time for Halloween!

The musical comedy is directed by Big Easy Award Winning Director Leslie Castay

(October 17, 2023—Metairie, Louisiana)—Jefferson Performing Arts Society presents a five-show run of the award-winning Broadway musical Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein, opening Friday, October 27th at Jefferson Performing Arts Center and closing Sunday, November 5th. The show is directed by Leslie Castay, who won Best Director of a Musical for the JPAS 2022 production of the multiple Big Easy Award-winning Irving Berlin’s Holiday Inn.

The original Broadway production of Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein (2008) was nominated for 3 Tonys, 4 Drama Desk Awards, 2 Drama League Awards, and 5 Outer Critics Circle Awards—for which it won Best Musical. In 2009, it was nominated for a Grammy for “Best Musical Theater Album”.

Based on the 1974 Mel Brooks (SpaceballsBlazing Saddles) movie starring and co-written by Gene Wilder, Young Frankenstein follows the story of Frederick Frankenstein, the grandson of the infamous Dr. Victor Frankenstein. When Frederick inherits the family castle in Transylvania, he becomes obsessed with his grandfather’s reanimation experiments. Assisted by a bizarre cast of characters that include Igor, Inga, and Frau Blücher, Frederick attempts to bring a creature to life, just like his granddad—only to realize he’s created a monster problem.

Featuring music and lyrics written by Brooks, the musical offers even more hilarity and wordplay than the original movie with songs such as The BrainTransylvania ManiaHe Vas My Boyfriend, and Roll in the Hay. The goofiness and gags of the 1974 movie are enhanced by the song and dance numbers presented by a 22-person all-local cast with a dynamic ensemble of 15, led by these principal cast members:

Michael Paternostro*-DR. FREDERICK FRANKENSTEIN

Adriel Aviles-MONSTER

Scott Sauber-IGOR

Charlie Carr-INGA

NATIONAL AMERICAN BEER DAY

National American Beer Day raises a glass to the rich American beermaking history and those who savor the continued traditions. Pour your favorite pint with millions who enjoy the storied brews across the nation.

U.S. Brewing History

Brewing beer in America begins long before Europeans arrived since Native Americans brewed beer from a variety of ingredients. They used corn, birch sap, and water to ferment their beverage. Then when the first colonists arrived in Virginia, they began combining their brewing traditions with the supplies at hand - that included corn, too. Since then, brewing and brewers became a principal occupation in the colonies. Interestingly, the first white child born in Manhattan grew up to be the first brewer born in America.

Today, the brewery established by David G. Yuengling is the oldest producing brewery in the United States. He established the Eagle Brewery in 1829. Amazingly, the brewery still remains in the family to this day.

Unlike most other breweries of the time, the Eagle Brewery survived Prohibition. In fact, very few survived. Those that did survive tried various legal and illegal tactics. In the Eagle Brewery's case, they reduced their alcohol content to within the legal limit. They also branched out. Ice cream anyone? Yes, the Yuengling's started a dairy. Others turned their beermaking supplies into other products. When prohibition lifted, they returned to full-fledged beermaking.

Despite these efforts, nearly every brewer existing before prohibition dissolved. Out of just over 1,300 brewers, only about 100 remained after prohibition. Today, we recognize the names of many of those surviving breweries.

The skill of a brewer requires years of practice in the trade. It's revered even. In Milwaukee, their professional baseball team is named after the brewer. In St. Louis and Denver, the stadiums are named after prominent brewers.

More than 2,100 breweries are manufacturing beer in the United States. They range in size from industry giants to brewpubs and microbreweries.

American Beer Facts

  • The U.S. produced 196 million barrels of beer in 2009.
  • Americans consume roughly 20 US gallons of beer per capita annually.
  • In 2008, the United States ranked sixteenth in the world in per capita consumption. However, total consumption was second only to China.
  • After Congress repealed prohibition, the industry consolidated into a small number of large-scale breweries.
  • The majority of the new breweries in the U.S. are small breweries and brewpubs. As members of the Brewers Association, they are termed "craft breweries" to differentiate them from the larger and older breweries.
  • Larger breweries most commonly produce the American lager.
  • However, smaller breweries (many founded in the 1980s) produce a range of styles.
  • Beer styles originating in the United States include: American pale ale Pennsylvania porter American IPA steam beer amber ale cream ale Cascadian dark ale.

NATIONAL BREADSTICK DAY

National Breadstick Day recognizes the delicious goodness of dunkable pieces of warm and tender enjoyment. Observe this celebration annually on the last Friday in October.

Breadsticks come in many forms. They can be soft or crunchy. Breadsticks can be flavored with garlic, onion, salt or cheese. They can also be sweetened with cinnamon and sugar.

They often accompany Italian meals. Pair them with pasta covered in alfredo or marinara sauces. Add them to a soup course. If you prefer, enjoy them with your salad. The aroma of fresh-baked breadsticks warm a home and improve every meal.

Some recipes call for cheese. A variety of cheese options can be used. Other recipes add a little bacon to the dough for an even richer flavor. When it comes to dipping sauces, breadsticks satisfy just about everyone at the table. Restaurants and home cooks offer up cheesy, herbed and spicy sauces for dipping. If you can't decide, order extra and try them all!

What does "anachronism" mean?

Something that doesn't belong

anachronism Pronunciation: uh-NAK-ruh-niz-uhm

Definition: An anachronism refers to something that is placed in a time period where it does not belong, often a person, object, or idea that is out of place in a particular historical setting.

Origin: The word "anachronism" originates from the Greek words "ana" meaning "against" and "chronos" meaning "time." It entered the English language in the early 17th century.

Example: In the movie set in ancient Rome, one of the characters was shown wearing a wristwatch, which is an obvious anachronism.

Historical anachronism refers to the occurrence of anachronisms within a historical context. It often takes place when a historical event, character, or detail is portrayed inaccurately or in a way that does not align with the actual time period being depicted. Historical anachronisms can be unintentional mistakes by authors, artists, or filmmakers who overlook or misinterpret historical facts. They can also be used deliberately to create humor, challenge historical accuracy, or make a social or political statement. Recognizing and understanding historical anachronisms allows us to better evaluate and interpret historical sources and representations.

VENDOR OF THE WEEK:

L'Hoste Citrus

In 1981, Lester and Linda L’Hoste began their journey into the world of citrus farming. They have been certified organic since 1996, and their produce is sold affordably at conventional prices. Their mission is to grow the best products for their customers, and they would like to extend a warm thanks to everyone who has supported their farm and family over the years. After damage from Hurricane Ida, the L’Hoste’s son wanted to join in the family business as well. This allowed them to expand their offerings this season beyond satsumas, grapefruits, and Meyer lemons to include heirloom pumpkin, squash, peppers, tomatoes, cantaloupe, and canary melon, “the sweetest melon you’ll ever taste,” according to Lester. Look for winter veggies like broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and kale as the seasons change. Find L’Hoste Citrus at Tuesday and Thursday markets.

When and where

The 2023 Louisiana Book Festival is on Saturday, October 28, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in downtown Baton Rouge.

701 N 4th St

701 N 4th St, Baton Rouge, LA 70802

The Louisiana Center for the Book in the State Library of Louisiana is excited to announce the return of the Louisiana Book Festival on Saturday, Oct. 28, 2023. The 19th annual Louisiana Book Festival will be held 9:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m. in downtown Baton Rouge at the Louisiana State Capitol, the State Library of Louisiana, Capitol Park Museum, and the surrounding Capitol Park area. The Friday before the festival, Oct. 27, will also see the return of WordShops, writing workshops with major authors as instructors. Details about the workshops will be released soon. “We have one of the best book festivals in the country in our own backyard. The 2023 lineup is full of awardwinning authors from near and far and features books highlighting all corners of this great state. We’ll also welcome some authors with their debut works," said Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser. “As always, there will be various programs for readers of different age groups. There is something for everyone.” The 24th Louisiana Writer Award ceremony will kick-off the festival with the presentation of the award to Maurice Carlos Ruffin. The festival’s One Book One Festival celebrates the 75th anniversary of Louisiana-born Truman Capote’s first published novel, Other Voices, Other Rooms, with the ever-popular Dr. Gary Richards returning to Louisiana to lead the reader discussion. “Over 200 authors and presenters are taking part in this year’s festival. Some are homegrown, and others have name recognition on a national level. Their works are just as varied,” said Interim State Librarian Meg Placke. “What they all have in common are amazing stories to share. We can’t wait to welcome everyone.” This year’s books highlight multiple topics, including the real-life story of a young Baton Rouge woman who battled cancer and became the youngest American to orbit Earth, the hidden history of Louisiana’s jazz age, the littleknown origins of Delta Airline’s North Louisiana origins, and the civil rights protest that saved the New Orleans Saints. A photography book from The Historic New Orleans Collection will make its debut and one of the first books from a new Library of Congress series will be featured during the Louisiana Book Festival. “It’s always great for us to be able to debut a book, and it’s a pleasure to introduce the public to an excellent new series. We’re thrilled to feature these titles from these two esteemed institutions,” said Jim Davis, Executive Director of the Louisiana Book Festival. The day will also include a focus on fiction, with a panel on “grit lit,” a genre of Southern literature that focuses on the unvarnished, rougher edges of life. The panel will feature some authors making their Louisiana debut. There will also be two panels of Louisiana poets hosted by the state poet laureate and programs for children and teens. Cooking demonstrations return, as do more than 100 exhibitor booths and tables and sponsor tents. Featured books will be available for purchase and signing, made possible by Cavalier House Books of Denham Springs. The event is free to the public. Each year the Louisiana Book Festival selects a Louisiana artist to provide the artwork for the festival. This year, Emily Roemer, a Shreveport native and LSU graduate, created the artwork. Roemer, who most recently worked at The New Yorker as a senior designer, said the assignment to design the artwork for the Louisiana Book Festival was a natural fit. “I’m obsessed with typography and that’s where the idea for the poster originated. I love books. I collect vintage books because of the typography they used.” She said there are countless typefaces that were done by hand that have never been digitized. Roemer said she scoured old magazines and books and scanned in unique fonts “that don’t exist in the modern-day computer world,” putting them into the artwork for the book festival. As for the pops of color, Roemer said that’s her personality. “I feel like I was born with an eye for color. It’s a challenge if someone wants a black-and-white logo,” she said, adding that she was excited to be asked to work on a project for her home state’s premiere book festival. “I was so excited. It’s always nice to be do something for home. I’m really excited to see the poster come out into the world.” For more information about the 2023 Louisiana Book Festival, visit www.LouisianaBookFestival.org.

THE DOOKY CHASE KITCHEN: LEAH’S LEGACY cooking series celebrates Leah Chase, the “Queen of Creole Cuisine.”

The 26-part cooking series, produced by WYES-TV in New Orleans, was shot on location at Dooky Chase’s Restaurant with dishes prepared by younger generations of the Chase family who have led the restaurant since Leah’s death in 2019.

ABOUT NICKEL-A-DANCE

Now in its 30th Year, NICKEL-A-DANCE is a free series of Sunday afternoon jazz concerts that began in 1994, and now take place each Spring and Fall season that is a hit with children, families, seniors and the general dancing public who don’t tend to go to night clubs. It attracts a diverse group of fans that meet on Frenchmen Street to celebrate jazz as America’s original dance music, while listening to the best of today’s classic jazz bands.

"Nickel" offers a weekly dance soirée that is friendly to lovers of all ages, where drinking from a bar is not a central focus of the gathering.

WHAT MAKES "NICKEL" SPECIAL?

New Orleans' longest-running traditional jazz dance series!

A precursor to popular "swing" dancing, the style of dance that accompanies this style of traditional New Orleans jazz is now a rare happening, making the NICKEL-A-DANCE series a delicate and unique weekly gathering among a plethora of live music showcases around the Crescent City.

This season, the series features acclaimed bandleaders from musical families that go back generations in New Orleans Jazz history, over the course of four Sundays.

FALL 2023 LINE-UP:

October 29th

Herlin Riley

& The Crescent City Joymakers

with special guest Shannon Powell!

New Orleans is a drummer’s town. But in this town full of first class drummers, Herlin Riley is “the” drummer. The Baron of the Boom Boom. The Pulse that keeps the life flowing through any body of work.

Born into a musical family steeped in gospel, blues and jazz, Herlin was asked by Wynton Marsalis to join him in New York in 1988 where Herlin stayed for almost 20 years, all the while still maintaining a home in New Orleans.

Today, he still is a regularly featured musician with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, but has since been based back in his hometown when he wasn't on tour with Ahmad Jamal, Dr. John, or Harry Connick, Jr. He lights up any stage with just his presence alone, and always fires up the first class musicians who love to play with him.

+ Plus! "The King of Tremé," Mr. Shannon Powell himself guests for this special installment of Nickel, making for a powerful rhythm fest of a finale to our 30th Year carrying the flame for jazz-dance tradition.

For the first time last year, the krewe conducted a mini festival in Mickey Markey Park, at Royal and Piety streets in the Bywater, before the parade. Albarran said this year the pre-parade event will be more elaborate, with more vendors, music, and kids’ activities. Traditional Day of the Dead bread will be available, and there will be a costume fashion show.

New this year, the krewe plans to erect a temporary stage at the parade stopping point on St. Roch Avenue near St. Roch Cemetery for speakers and musical performances.

Everyone is welcome to participate in the procession. Customarily, costumes combine mourning clothes with masks and makeup that blend macabre skulls with floral patterns. Marchers often bring candles.

Albarran said, however, that costuming and candles are entirely optional. “We only want people to come and have a magical night,” she said.

  • From 4:30 to 6 p.m., the pre-parade fiesta takes place in Mickey Markey Park at 3301 Royal St.
  • At 6:30 p.m. the parade will line up on Royal Street.
  • At 7 p.m. the parade proceeds on Royal Street, turns right on Franklin Avenue, left on St. Claude Avenue, and right on St. Roch Avenue.
  • The parade concludes outside of St. Claude Cemetery, 1725 St. Roch Ave., where singing, performances and mourning ceremonies continue.

Final Four Rematch: LSU WBB To Face Virginia Tech in SEC/ACC Challenge

Story by Zack Nagy

© Provided by LSU Country on FanNation

LSU will host Virginia Tech in a Final Four rematch on November 30 at 8 p.m. CT as a part of the ACC/SEC Challenge.

The Tigers and Hokies met last season in the Final Four as LSU came from behind in the fourth quarter to clinch a spot in the national championship game. The Tigers trailed by nine to start the fourth quarter but outscored the Hokies by 16 in the final quarter to claim LSU’s first national championship game berth. LSU defeated Iowa two days later for the national championship.

LSU will enter the season with multiple players returning from the program’s first ever national championship team along with a talented list of newcomers that include the nation’s No. 1 rated recruiting class and the top two players from this year’s transfer portal.

Related video

Forward Angel Reese headlines LSU’s returners as the defending Most Outstanding Player from the Final Four. She set the NCAA record with 34 double-doubles throughout the season as a dominant scorer and rebounder. Reese led the SEC in both scoring (23.0 ppg) and rebounding (15.4 rpg).

Guard Flau’jae Johnson is another returning starter for the Tigers who earned SEC Freshman of the Year. In her first year of college basketball, Johnson averaged 11.0 points per game and 5.9 rebounds per game. Guard Kateri Poole started in LSU’s final five games throughout the championship run, bringing a defensive physicality to the court while having a knack to knock down big shots for the Tigers.

LSU will also bring back contributors like forward Sa’Myah Smith who was named to the SEC All-Freshman and guard Last-Tear Poa. Both Smith and Sa’Myah played critical and productive minutes off the bench in the national championship win over Iowa.

The Tigers top-rated incoming freshmen class is headlined by guard Mikaylah Williams who was named the 2023 Morgan Wooten National Player of the Year as the top high school player. Forward Aalyah Del Rosario, the nation’s No. 7 rated player, played in the McDonald’s All-American game with Williams and the Tigers also bring in freshmen guard Angelica Velez who was named Tennessee’s Division II-A Miss Basketball and guard Janae Kent.

LSU was active in the transfer portal, adding guard Hailey Van Lith and forward Aneesah Morrow who were ranked No. 1 and 2, respectively, in ESPN’s transfer portal rankings. Van Lith averaged 19.7 points, 4.5 assists and 3.2 rebounds last season, earning AP All-America honorable mention honors while leading Louisville to the Elite Eight. Van Lith and Iowa’s Caitlin Clark are the only two players in the country who averaged at least 19 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists throughout the year. Morrow was a lethal scorer (24.7 ppg) and rebounder (12.2 rpg) at DePaul. Her and Reese were the only two players in the country to rank inside the top 10 in the nation in both scoring and rebounding.

The New Orleans Jazz Museum’s annual Improvisations Gala is a thrilling evening of New Orleans music, food, and local culture. Last year’s Gala brought more than 1,000 people together for 15 performances across five stages, and this year promises an even larger celebration.

Join us for a lovely afternoon ushering in the holiday season at the New Orleans Women’s Opera Guild Eggnog event! There will be great shopping with our holiday boutique vendors, fabulous catering by Chez Nous, amazing music by Jim Walpole, and so much more.

In partnership with CRC We Care, We Share, we will be providing Christmas Meals to the community. The past year has been challenging for many, and this is a simple way for us to say, “We see you, and we are here for you!”

We will distribute 1500 boxes of food containing a frozen turkey (if available) or ham along with non-perishable food items while supplies last.

  • NO VOUCHERS NEEDED
  • When you arrive, please follow the directions of our volunteers.
  • We will load the food directly into your vehicle.

Exciting news from the Office of Lt. Governor and the Office of Tourism! We're thrilled to announce the stunning new design for our float as we gear up for our 3rd year in the 2024 Rose Parade in Pasadena, California.

This year’s theme is “Celebrating a World of Music: The Universal Language." Our float features a larger-than-life Mardi Gras jester, fleur de lis, second-line inspired umbrellas, and lots of purple, green, and gold.
