WORLD SMILE DAY

Each year on the first Friday in October, World Smile Day devotes a day to smiles and spreading random acts of kindness.

If someone smiles at you, you’re bound to smile back. A smile often expresses a feeling, encouragement to someone, or serves as a greeting. If you don’t smile enough, #WorldSmileDay is the perfect day to start.

7 Benefits of Smiling

  • Improves mood
  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Relieves stress
  • Betters relationships
  • Boosts the immune system
  • Relieves pain
  • Increases life expectancy

Who wouldn’t want all those benefits? All it takes is smiling. And the more often, the better!

Find Paw Paw’s Donuts at 619 Pink St. Thursday through Sunday, from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Paw Paw’s Donuts continues its Sunday appearances at the Crescent City Farmers Market, 8 a.m. to noon at Tad Gormley Stadium (Marconi at Navarre).

Solar storms may cause faint northern lights across fringes of the northern United States over the weekend as forecasters monitor for possible disruptions to power and communications.

The sun’s magnetic field is currently at the peak of its 11-year cycle, making solar storms and northern lights more frequent. The sun shot out two strong flares this week, including one Thursday that was the biggest since 2017.

Pale auroras may be visible as far south as South Dakota, Iowa and New York — but the storms could still intensify or weaken over the weekend.

“There’s still a fair amount of uncertainty,” Erica Grow Cei, spokesperson for the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, said Friday.

Unusually strong solar storms in May produced jaw-dropping aurora displays across the Northern Hemisphere. This week’s storms featured fewer ejections of the high energy plasma that can drive a light show, according to NOAA.

Gun Free Zone Signage Interest Survey

Per R.S. 40:1379(O), any property owner, lessee, or other lawful custodian can prohibit or restrict access of persons carrying a firearm onto said property. Accordingly, private business owners have the right to prohibit firearms on their premises and can do so by posting a sign to that effect.

The New Orleans Health Department has free laminated “Firearm Free” Business signs on hand, and has a form where businesses can easily sign up to receive signage and select a time for delivery by NOHD staff: Interested businesses should fill out this survey:

Unetaneh Tokef: Do We Control our Fate?

The High Holiday prayer that asks us to consider our mortality is an urgent call to examine our lives.

If there’s one word that is closely connected with the High Holiday season, it’s teshuvah, repentance. It’s a part of the vocabulary taught to even young religious school children: looking at one’s behavior and then taking steps to make better decisions and live a life free of transgressions against God and our fellow humans.

There’s one iconic prayer, recited on each of the days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, that expresses in a clear and dramatic way our need to perform teshuvah. The text of Unetaneh Tokef lays it all out for us and utilizes vivid imagery: Before God lies a giant book — the Book of Life — in which we hope all of our names will be inscribed for the coming year. The Unetaneh Tokef goes on to tell us that on Rosh Hashanah, those deserving names are entered — ensuring they will live through the year, and on Yom Kippur, the Book is sealed — their fates no longer alterable. We have until the very end of Yom Kippur, during the concluding Neilah service when the liturgy tells us that the gates are closing, to sway God’s decision in our favor.

To drive home the serious consequences of our actions, Unetaneh Tokef then lists all the dire ways we can meet our fate. We read the classic words “Who shall live and who shall die?” — but then the rest of the paragraph is devoted to all the ways the latter outcome could take place:

Support My Jewish Learning

Who by fire and who by water?
Who by plague and who by famine?
Who by sword and who by wild beast?
Who by hunger and who by thirst?

At last, we’re given a shred of hope, the theological carrot to these long passages of stick. We read:

Uteshuvah utefilah utzedakah ma’avirin et roa hag’zeirah
But repentance, prayer, and deeds of charity can annul the severity of the decree.

This prayer is undoubtedly the climax of the High Holiday morning service. As the hazzan of my synagogue, I see my entire congregation present for this prayer (although people start to trickle out of the sanctuary soon after). Backed up by the choir, I chant it in some of the most ornate and dramatic musical selections of the year.

Yet, at the same time, I find this prayer to be the most disturbing, confusing, and theologically questionable of the entire mahzor. A close look at the wording seems to contradict everything we’re supposed to believe and do on these High Holidays. It says that on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, our names are written and then sealed for the coming year. That is, the decision is made. It’s a done deal. Therefore, it is already predetermined whether we will live or die during the next year. What good then are our acts of teshuvah? How can we annul the severity of the decree through deeds of tzedakah (charity) if that decree is not only recorded but in fact sealed in a book? Should we leave the sanctuary at the end of Yom Kippur and simply hope for the best, realizing that nothing we do from that moment on has any effect on whether we will survive the year ahead?

We need a better way to relate to this prayer that is so central to our High Holiday liturgy. I have come to understand this disturbing and powerful text less as a promise of childlike reward and punishment and more as a statement of the fragility of life and our own mortality. I have literally been moved to tears (no small challenge while trying to sing with a full voice along with the choir) looking out at a full sanctuary, everyone’s voices joined in the familiar refrain:

B’rosh hashanah yikateivun uv’yom tzom kippur yeichateimun
On Rosh Hashanah it is written and on Yom Kippur it is sealed

At that moment, I realize that not all of us will be here next year. These people — congregants, friends, family — it is a sad but inescapable fact that some will die over the course of the coming year. Our lives are a gift. We perform teshuvah not to appease a distant and invisible Deity, but rather to remind us of our value to one another and strengthen our relationships with each other. We give tzedakah to better the lives of those around us. And we engage in prayer to further develop the bonds of our connection to Judaism and our community.

Our job is not to temporarily put on our best behavior in order to convince God to let us live for another year. Instead, we acknowledge that our time here on earth is limited and our lives tenuous. The true and vital message of Unetaneh Tokef requires us to ask ourselves not who shall live, but how shall we live?

NATIONAL CINNAMON BUN DAY

National Cinnamon Bun Day on October 4 sweetens us up with a Scandinavian pastry. This delicious food holiday happens when a warm bun swirls together a yeasty dough in sugar and cinnamon.

Served with coffee or tea and enjoyed with a good book, a friend, or a dance party (don't judge), it comforts on chilly fall days.

Despite all the sugar in the recipes, cinnamon comes with many benefits. Since it's loaded with antioxidants, it protects cells from the free radicals that may play a role in heart disease and cancer. It also helps reduce inflammation. Cinnamon may lessen or help fight infections, too. These properties are also benefits of antioxidants. Another benefit includes reducing the risk of heart disease by lowering blood pressure, bad cholesterol, and triglycerides.

One of the most essential benefits of cinnamon, though, is how affects blood sugar. It may help improve sensitivity to the hormone insulin, assisting people with diabetes to treat their condition. So while we don't recommend getting all your cinnamon solely through cinnamon buns, it's nice to know it's available.

Attention! Do You Know the Military Origins of These Ten Words & Phrases?

Published on October 4, 2024

Credit: Filip Andrejevic

A country’s military tends to be a source of great pride. The brave men and women who serve in the different branches of the military are usually greeted by civilians with great respect and enthusiasm. After all, they don’t only help keep their countries safe, but they also keep alive a tradition that, in some cases, dates back several hundreds of years.

The influence of the military is so exceptional that it even has an effect on the way we talk. From items of clothing to ways of celebrating a good grade on a test, here are ten of our favorite terms derived from the military world.

1Bikini

Credit: Antony

We’ll start with what’s probably the most surprising item on this list. We won’t blame you if you weren’t aware of the rich history of the bikini, but you might be surprised to learn how refreshingly interesting the clothes that millions of women wear for a fun day on the beach are. For starters, did you know that a French automotive engineer invented the bikini, or that it was named after a decisive military test?

In the 1940s, engineer Louis Reard took over his mother’s lingerie business and designed a two-piece swimsuit that exposed the midriff for a better tan. Reard named his design the Atome, and advertised it as "the world’s smallest swimsuit." Later on, the designer chose to rename it "the bikini", to grab some attention from the first atomic bomb test on Bikini Atoll, conducted in 1946.

2To the bitter end

Credit: Megan Menegay

Fighting or working to the bitter end sounds like experiencing a difficult situation until the worst outcome (or the most bitter) occurs. This is definitively not what this idiom means: it describes having the endurance to take on a difficult experience, with the determination to see it through.

While the origins of this idiom are not entirely clear, the most accepted explanation comes from the nautical world. Its first recorded use comes from a 1627 publication called "Seaman’s Grammar", written by fabled explorer and military officer Captain John Smith. In it, Smith described the way rope is wrapped around "the bit", which is basically a post. The captain then defines "the bitter end" as the point at which there is no more rope left to be used.

3Cup of Joe

Credit: Raimond Klavins

We mentioned this idiom in our previous article on slang words, but it was too good to pass. While you probably don’t ask for a "cup of joe" from your local barista, they would know that it means a cup of coffee. What they might not know is that this popular idiom allegedly comes from disgruntled Army sailors.

According to this theory, the origins of the phrase "a cup of joe" references Josephus Daniels, the U.S. Secretary of the Navy during World War 1. Daniels enacted a ban on alcohol consumption on all Navy ships, which obviously infuriated many sailors at the time. Since a cup of black coffee was the strongest drink they had access to, sailors started using the sarcastic expression "a cup of Joe".

4Taken aback

Credit: Andreea Swank

You might be taken aback by a particularly shocking headline in a newspaper, an unpleasant comment heard on the sidewalk, or even the impossibly friendly demeanor of a new coworker. In any case, what’s defining about this phrase is the disconcerting surprise with which you are suddenly hit. This seems only fitting since this phrase has its origins in how suddenly a gust of wind would hit a ship at the sea.

The word "aback", which has now fallen into disuse, means to go backward. If an unexpected and particularly strong wind suddenly blew into the sails of a ship, they would be blown flat against the mast, which would make the ship be "taken aback", and suddenly stop.

5With flying colors

Credit: Gigi

Let’s step back in time, and try to picture a time in your childhood when you passed a test with flying colors. Did you also picture something resembling Superman’s cape whenever you heard this phrase? Maybe it was just us but, in any case, this idiom is one heavily associated with the joyous feeling of doing something exceptionally well.

While it might not be directly related to a superhero, this phrase does come from a colored piece of cloth fluttering in the air. In the ancient days of sailing, ships would return to port either showing or hiding their flags (known as "colors"). Raising a flag would communicate victory or success; therefore, colors "flying" in the wind would be considered very good news.

6Murphy’s Law

Credit: Randy Laybourne

Need something onto which to blame that toast that fell jelly-side down, that car splashing you on a rainy day, or that bus that shows up at the exact same second you light a cigarette? Well, you might find solace in blaming Murphy’s Law: Anything that can go wrong will go wrong. Having said that, you might be wondering who the eponymous Murphy was, and why his name is associated with this now-infamous maxim.

The origins of this phrase are still disputed, but we do know that the law itself was coined by American army engineer Edward A. Murphy Jr., who was involved in high-speed rocket sled experiments during the 1940s. Murphy wrote his law after a series of mishaps with his experiments and was later popularized by a press conference of the department’s head.

7Loose cannon

Credit: Berry Hafkin

An old trope in 80s buddy cop movies is one of those iconic scenes in which the police chief suspends the two protagonists and makes them submit their badges and guns. After being called a couple of "loose cannons" by their superior officers, these two cops decide to step up their game and work together to solve this crime. You might be tricked into thinking that they were called "loose cannons" over something related to their guns, but this idiom actually comes from old sea warfare.

From the 17th to the 19th century, cannons were the main weapon used by warships at sea, which were mounted on wheels and secured with rope. An unbarred (or loose) cannon moved by the sea would obviously be a danger for sailors.

8Scuttlebutt

Credit: Ben White

Let’s say that the wonderful chit-chat you and your favorite coworker have by the water cooler happened on a Navy ship. First things first: Congratulations, you are now a sailor! But, most importantly, you might be delighted to learn that this exchanged gossip now has a wonderfully strange name: scuttlebutt.

This word is a slang term for gossip, usually spread by sailors aboard a ship. The name comes from the water fountain from which sailors drank, on which most rumors were exchanged. Originally, sailships would provide water from casks (also known as butts), on which a hole would be "scuttled" for drinking.

9Pea Coat

Credit: Kirill Suntsov

Another clothing item with origins in the military world, a pea coat is a type of coat generally made from wool. While short, pea coats usually have large lapels and double-breasted fronts and are a great option for cold winter days.

This protection against the cold was the main reason why they were issued to sailors in the American navy, as well as by the navies of some European countries. American sailors referred to these coats as "p-coats", a shortening for "pilot coat."

10Feeling blue

Credit: Aleksandra Sapozhnikova

Sadness is a part of being human. We have all felt blue at one point or another, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with it. Nonetheless, have you ever wondered why the color blue is associated with sadness? And while we can’t offer you a definitive answer, most people agree that this idiom comes from sailing ships.

This theory states that in the 1700s, whenever a ship lost its captain or an officer while at sea, the crew would fly a blue flag when returning to port. Therefore, the sadness of losing a crewmate would be intrinsically connected with this blue flag waving in the wind.

Nickel-A-Dance Fall 2024 Season to Begin on Frenchmen Street

by: OffBeat Staff

The fall 2024 season of Nickel-A-Dance, a beloved free traditional jazz concert series, is set to begin on September 29. For over three decades, Nickel-A-Dance has brought live jazz to the public, offering an afternoon of family-friendly entertainment on Sundays from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. This year, the series moves to a new location at Favela Chic, located at 525 Frenchmen Street, continuing its tradition on this famous music corridor.

Originally started in 1994, Nickel-A-Dance has become a staple for fans of New Orleans jazz who may not frequent nightclubs. It attracts a diverse crowd, including children, families, and seniors, all coming together to celebrate traditional jazz as America’s original dance music. This fall’s lineup will feature some of the city’s most renowned jazz musicians.

On October 6, Nickel-A-Dance will host Duke Heitger and The Crescent City Joymakers. Heitger, a classic jazz trumpeter known for his virtuosity, has performed internationally and is a long-standing performer on the Steamboat Natchez. His band is a staple of Nickel-A-Dance and promises a night of spirited traditional jazz.

Next, on October 13, Mark Braud and His Sunday Night All-Stars will take the stage. Braud, part of the musical Brunious and Santiago families, has been a fixture in the New Orleans jazz scene since his youth. He has performed with Harry Connick Jr., Preservation Hall Jazz Band, and many other notable artists. His band will bring a blend of traditional jazz and contemporary flair to the series.

Lars Edegran and The Palm Court Jazz All-Stars are set to perform on October 20. Edegran, originally from Sweden, has been a New Orleans resident since 1966 and is known for his versatility on piano, guitar, and banjo. He has worked with jazz greats like Earl Hines and George Lewis, and his band will showcase the best of New Orleans traditional jazz.

The fall series will conclude on October 27 with Gregg Stafford and The Jazz Hounds. Stafford, a respected trumpeter and vocalist, has led several prominent New Orleans jazz bands, including Danny Barker’s Jazz Hounds and the Young Tuxedo Brass Band. He has dedicated his career to preserving the musical traditions of New Orleans and remains an active figure in the city’s jazz community.

Comedy House New Orleans

The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)

CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)

609-610 Fulton St

New Orleans, LA 70130

Mon, September 30

8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

(Entry at 7:30 pm)

The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.

Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.

The list of performers? A total mystery.

The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.

How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.

When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.

Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

Join the award-winning (1st place, baby!) NOLA Jitterbugs for a 6-week series with live music in the last class!

Our live music classes with local musicians and culture bearers, as well as our overall emphasis on music appreciation is what makes our lessons stand out among the rest!

Starts at The Contemporary Arts Center!

6-7pm Intro to Swing

For total beginners to swing dancing or dancing of any kind. Also for those looking to refresh their basics and learn some ragtime dances. We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.

7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level

This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.

No partner required to take either of these classes. Come alone or with friends!

“Our mission is to bring together people from all backgrounds throughout the city,” said Stephanie Davi McNeely, Chair of the West Bank Hispanic Heritage Festival and the First Lady of the University of Holy Cross. “The festival highlights the diversity of our Hispanic culture through music, food, art and education in a fun, family-friendly and free environment, right in the heart of the UHC campus.”

“Our UHC community is approximately 12 percent Hispanic, and we are excited to showcase not only the strong educational programs and welcoming campus environment that UHC offers, but also hope attendees are able to discover something new about the Hispanic culture that plays such an important role in our community,” said Dr. Stanton McNeely, president of the University of Holy Cross.

Rougarou Fest Queen Embodies Louisiana Fifolet

The Rougarou Fest is proud to announce Mrs. Courtney Bennett will reign as the 2024 Rougarou Queen.

A native of Morgan City, and a resident of Houma since 1984, Courtney has been active and involved in gymnastics, cheering, dancing, and numerous music and art events in our community. She is the mother of two awesome children, Gavin, age 13, and Laurel, age 6. She has been married for 18 years to the love of her life, Garrett Bennett.

Courtney graduated from Nicholls State University with a degree in early childhood education. With that education and her creative passion, she spent many years working with children at the preschool at her church, with events at SOLA – a local children’s theatre, and as a dancer and instructor at Paddy Danos School of Dance. Because of her realization of her love of makeup and theater, she followed her creative dream and enrolled in cosmetology! Today she’s a hairstylist at Ambiance Salon in Houma.

Continuing her dreams of designing hair and make-up and ALWAYS a fan of dress up and costuming, she became involved in Rougarou Fest with Jonathan Foret. She has been a Rougarou witch for many years dancing the streets with her sister, Megan, and her fellow hairstylist and friend, Danae. She admits that the hours they spent doing witch make-up and costumes are just as fun as the parade. The first time she saw the Rougarou parade, she knew she had to be a part of it. It’s with her fellow witchy sisters, that she haunts the streets of Houma with their German witch dance.

She is very excited and appreciative to be able to take on this creative project and represent the festival as the 2024 Rougarou Queen. She looks forward to working with her longtime friend, Jonathan Foret, and his committee and volunteers. She encourages everyone to come out and enjoy everything the festival represents and has to offer!

Her costume is inspired by the story of the fifolet. In Louisiana folklore, the "fifolet" is a supernatural creature closely related to the "will-o'-the-wisp" found in other cultures. The fifolet is believed to be a type of mischievous spirit or fairy that appears as a glowing light, often seen floating over marshes, swamps, or other eerie, dark places.

Much like the will-o'-the-wisp, the fifolet is said to lead people astray, drawing them into dangerous or confusing situations. It’s often described as a trickster that lures travelers off their paths, playing with their sense of direction and perception. In some tales, encountering a fifolet might mean you're about to face some misfortune or get lost. The lore around fifolets reflects the rich tapestry of Cajun and Creole folklore, blending elements of European, African, and Native American traditions to create unique and localized myths.

The queen would like to thank her hair stylist and makeup artist, Dustin McElroy, and all the stylists at Ambiance Salon for helping make this possible. She would also like to thank Kathy Marmillion for creating her "Rougarou Queen" sash and the staff at Chez Lili Bridal for all of their hard work and support. She appreciates Dristy Foret Photography for beautifully capturing all of the hard work and talent that went into creating the fifolet-inspired queen. Most importantly, she would like to thank her husband and kids, along with all of her family and friends, for their love and support during the preparation to be the Rougarou Queen. And lastly, she thanks Jonathan Foret and the Rougarou Fest for the opportunity!

The Rougarou Fest is a family-friendly festival with a spooky flair that celebrates the rich folklore that exists along the bayous of Southeast Louisiana. It showcases live music, cultural activities, children’s activities, Cajun food, the Krewe Ga Rou parade, and so much more. All proceeds go to the South Louisiana Wetlands Discovery Center, a nonprofit organization that is revolutionizing how we think, teach and learn about Louisiana’s disappearing coast.

Each year a Rougarou Queen is selected to represent the festival at various events throughout the region. The queen is selected from our large team of volunteers by a committee of festival organizers. This ensures that our queen is aware of the details of our festival since she has been a part of bringing our event to life in previous years.

The Rougarou Queen will reign over the parade at 7PM Saturday, October 19, 2024.

"We're excited to bring the community together for this annual celebration of one of our favorite fall vegetables," said Zach O’Donnell, ESYNOLA Program Manager. "The Sweet Potato Fest is not just about food—it's about fostering community spirit and showcasing the talents of our students and local chefs."

The Sweet Potato Fest gives students and families the chance to connect with nature and the cycle of the seasons by getting hands-on in the garden. It’s a day to honor local farmers, celebrate culinary traditions, and open conversations about sustainable agriculture — all while enjoying a fun, healthy day outdoors. Above all, it’s about the simple joy of digging into the earth, sharing good food, and building a stronger community.

The event is free and open to the public, so gather your friends and family for a day filled with unforgettable memories. Whether you're tasting innovative sweet potato dishes, cheering on parade participants, or simply enjoying the festive atmosphere, Sweet Potato Fest 2024 is not to be missed!

The Project

Most importantly, with community support, the project will create a self-funded long-term impact on our city, helping create positive change and local investment through the arts. The artwork will be both meaningful and representative of the diversity of our city, boosting social cohesion and strengthening community relationships.

The inaugural NOLA Mural Fest will launch in the fall of 2024 at Beanlandia October 25th-27th.
