Covid Chronicles- Week 12
Hello my friends-Not quite sure what to say this week. So hard to put words to the rollercoaster of emotions we have been through over the last several days. For me, it's been a whirlwind of grief, horror, anger and fear combined with glimmers of hope and awareness that things must change here in Oakland and around the country. Once again, the taped death of George Floyd acts like a window flung open forcing those of us with white skin privilege all to witness and acknowledge the reality of racism aimed at people of color throughout the country.
The multi-faceted gem that is Oakland seems to be reflecting our times in a myriad of ways. Wonderfully powerful protests and marches bringing together folks of all ages and colors demanding justice are contrasted with more violent police interactions and looting. It's been both inspiring and frightening to watch, but we all understand real change does not come easily or politely.
So where do we go from here? The response from my landlord and many other stores along College Ave was to board up the storefronts. I understand and appreciate the desire to protect businesses and livelihoods (especially after 3 months of Covid closures) but I also know it feels horrible doing business behind a barricade. This cannot be the answer.
So that's where I am this week, trying to navigate the waves of emotions passing through me. From my individual situation to the community around me, to the state of our nation- we are in a process of intense change. I am trying to stay hopeful that we will all get through this to a better, safer place for us all.
So, given all that, here's my attempt at doing what I do best, spreading some clothing love and joy to us all..... stay safe and healthy.
