POSITIVE THINKING DAY
Positive Thinking Day is on September 13 on the National Day Calendar as a day to promote the power of positivity and the impact this simple act can have on your life. Join us as we explain why maintaining a positive mind benefits you and those around you.
Positive thinking is an emotional and mental practice that requires an optimistic outlook on life. It's about choosing to focus on the positive things that empower us despite our circumstances. A positive thinker doesn't ignore negative aspects of their life. Instead, they maintain a hopeful attitude to get them through the disruption.
Developing a positive attitude takes time and practice, especially as you begin to retrain your thoughts to reflect a better attitude. As you become more self-aware of yourself, your mindset will change. You will develop an attitude of acceptance and gratefulness that focuses on the positive or good things in your life. This self-awareness will also teach you to accept unexpected setbacks, disappointment, or difficulties.
Did You Know?
A pessimist or negative thinker is someone who has a tendency to focus on the negative or see the downside of things. These types of people always anticipate failure, have a habit of making almost every situation gloomy, and often exaggerate situations unnecessarily.
7 Tips Towards Positive Thinking
Changing the way you think is never an easy thing to do. However, we know that when you practice certain habits you will eventually develop a more positive outlook.
- Start with self-awareness to recognize patterns that cause negative thinking. When you understand what triggers your negative thinking, you will learn how to start changing those habits.
- Each time you have a negative thought, think of one positive thing about the situation. You may have a list of negatives when you begin this practice, but over time, you will automatically replace those negative thoughts with a more positive mindset.
- Take time each day to practice gratitude. Focus on what you have rather than what you don't have. By finding a few things to be grateful for each day, you will quickly realize your have more blessings than you do problems.
- Limit time spent with pessimistic people to reduce negative feelings and talk. In fact, you should be spending time with people who have a positive outlook on life. Being around people who have positive energy influences the way you think, too.
- Meditate and practice mindfulness. Whether you use a deep breathing technique or sit in a quiet space, finding time to regenerate is important. During your mindful practices, practice saying positive affirmations, beginning each affirmation with "I am...". Remember to always be kind to yourself.
- Instead of focusing on the problems you face, shift your focus on finding solutions. Approaching any situation with a problem-solving mindset will help you deal with any negative emotions that could occur.
- Visual success and celebrate your small achievements. Each time you make progress or achieve a small task, you deserve to give yourself praise. In fact, recognizing your minor success will boost your confidence, resulting in a more positive attitude.

HURRICANE FRANCINE UPDATES FOR
JEFFERSON PARISH BUSINESSES
September 12, 2024
JEDCO has mobilized our emergency operations plan and activated our online resources to support local business in the aftermath of Hurricane Francine. Our staff is currently assessing damage and disruption to businesses in the area. The organization has created several resources to aid in business assessment and recovery.
Hurricane Francine Response Webpage: We encourage all businesses to visit the JEDCO Storm Center, which serves as our online emergency response portal for updated recovery resources, disaster assistance and storm information. If you have resources or information you'd like to see shared on the site, please email kscram@jedco.org. We will be updating this site with new information and resources as they become available.
Hurricane Francine Business Assessment Survey: Jefferson Parish businesses are encouraged to fill out the Hurricane Francine Business Assessment Form to help the JEDCO team respond to immediate needs. The Hurricane Francine Business Assessment Form also allows business owners to provide updated hours of operation, limited menus, or specific storm-related information that customers may need to know.
JEDCO remains a steadfast resource and partner for our local businesses. Our goal is to help bring all affected businesses back into commerce as quickly as possible.
The JEDCO offices are currently closed, but our team is working remotely to provide business support. Please email info@jedco.org or call 504-875-3908 to reach a JEDCO team member.

Description
This striking cross pendant was once owned and worn by the iconic Elizabeth Taylor. Embodying her irresistible Hollywood glamour, the blue enamel and diamond pendant designed by British bespoke jeweler Theo Fennell is almost as stunning as Taylor herself.
Known for his eye-catching designs and one-of-a-kind commissions, Fennell crafted this cross pendant with brilliant blue enamel and 18K yellow gold embellished with delicate floral motifs. Accented with five white diamonds of F-G color and VS clarity and accompanied by its 14K yellow gold chain, this cross pendant still makes as bold a statement today as it did when Elizabeth Taylor wore it.
Renowned not only for her unforgettable roles in films like Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Cleopatra and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, Taylor was also celebrated for her extraordinary jewelry collection. Her assemblage, among the most significant in the world, featured iconic masterpieces from Tiffany & Co., Van Cleef & Arpels, Cartier, JAR, Bulgari and other distinguished design houses. This necklace is further elevated by its provenance as a part of Kathy Ireland's collection. Ireland, a prominent figure who seamlessly transitioned from supermodel to dynamic businesswoman, has leveraged her brand's influence to become a major force in fashion and home furnishings. Alongside Taylor, the two have redefined the concept of "Hollywood Icon."

It’s Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s Manchac & Middendorf’s Slidell! Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September, handmade paper-thin fettuccine is on the menu.
This mouth-watering dish is served with your choice of classic Alfredo or Marinara Sauce and topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese with optional add-ons of shrimp, crabmeat and chicken.
- Fettuccine with Alfredo Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
- Fettuccine with Marinara Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
- Optional add-ons:
- Shrimp
- Crabmeat
- Chicken
- Side of Fettuccine topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
Fun Facts:
- Our handmade, paper-thin fettuccine was a guest favorite at Bella Luna in the French Quarter. Bella Luna was a fine dining restaurant owned and operated by Horst and Karen Pfeifer. It closed due to Hurricane Katrina and never reopened. The memory of Bella Luna lives on through Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s. Same Pasta. Same Taste. None of the Fancy.
- Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer makes the fettuccine from scratch which consists solely of Semolina flour and eggs. It’s a very time consuming process to make the fettuccine so paper-thin, but it’s definitely worth it.
- Fettuccine is available all day (lunch and dinner).
- Our full menu is also available.
- Uncooked fettuccine is also available for purchase to make a quick meal at home.
We hope you can join us for Fettuccine Frenzy — Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September!

All NOLA Public Schools to Remain Closed Friday in Response to Hurricane Francine
(New Orleans – September 12, 2024) —NOLA Public Schools (NOLA-PS) conducted building inspections of its school facilities in the wake of Hurricane Francine in order to determine a reopening plan following the storm.
Due to operational challenges, the district has determined it is in the best interest of the community to remain closed on Friday. In addition to power outages, building impacts, and staffing issues with bus companies, the city has asked residents to conserve water to prevent sewer backups. We encourage families to check with their individual schools for their reopening plans.
The health and safety of our students, staff, and families are our top priority. We recognize that many families are dealing with power outages or home damage and encourage everyone to focus on their safety and recovery.
NOLA-PS’ Mahalia Jackson campus is experiencing chiller issues and will be closed on Friday. However, the Central Office in Algiers will reopen and operate as usual.
Superintendent Dr. Avis Williams expresses her heartfelt gratitude to all schools, teachers, staff, families, and students for their resilience and cooperation during this challenging time.

FNWS - Meet & Taste with Importer Mary Taylor
We are excited to have Mary Taylor back at Swirl for this exclusive tasting event! Mary Taylor is a wine importer known for curating and importing a selection of European wines under her label, "Mary Taylor Wine." Her focus is on wines that reflect the true character of the regions and vineyards they come from, emphasizing authenticity, terroir, and tradition. She works closely with small, family-owned wineries in Europe, particularly in France, Italy, Spain, and Portugal, to bring unique and high-quality wines to the U.S. market.
Her approach is to offer wines that are not only representative of their origins but also affordable and accessible to a wider audience. Mary Taylor's label often highlights the appellation and the producer, providing transparency about the wine's origin and making it easier for consumers to explore and understand European wines.
Tonight, Mary Taylor, champion of lesser-known AOCs, will personally guide you through a curated selection of European wines, each chosen for its distinct expression of terroir and tradition. Learn the stories behind the wines—from the families who have been cultivating these unique grapes for generations to the production methods that preserve their authenticity. We hope you'll join us!

Playmakers Theater been producing terrific shows from Covington’s Sans Souci Forest since 1955. This Saturday we raise the curtain on our 70th season with the uproarious comedy ‘Til Beth Do Us Part, by Jones Hope Wooten, the same team that wrote 2023’s sellout hit, The Savannah Sipping Society. ‘Til Beth Do Us Part is a side-splitting comic romp about careens around the strained marriage of Gibby and Suzannah, a couple who have allowed their 27-year marriage grow stale. When new assistant Beth steps in the fireworks begin. Whether you’re married, single, rethinking your divorce or currently being controlled by someone up to no good, you’re sure to enjoy this family friendly, laugh-out-loud comedy.
The cast features Joanna Parr, Shawn Patterson, Stephanie Sayles, Jen Patterson, Laura Hayes, Daniel Jenkins, and Nada Elkassouf. Assistant director is Jen Patterson.
There will be some important changes at Playmakers Theater beginning this season. Evening curtain times will be 7:30 p.m. instead of 7 p.m. to help patrons navigate bridge construction traffic. We will also be adding Friday evening performances. And Playmakers will once again offer reserved seating.

NATIONAL PEANUT DAY
On September 13, National Peanut Day pays homage to mighty and tasty peanut. We may drive you nuts after we share some compressed information about peanuts!
Likely originating in South America around 3,500 years ago, this legume is not a nut. They grow underground, like potatoes. Since they are an edible seed that forms in a pod, they belong to the family Leguminosae with peas and beans. When it comes to plants packing protein power, peanuts provide a whopping 8 grams per ounce, more than any other nut according to The Peanut Institute. And remember, it's not a nut! Nuts grow on trees.
The peanut is also high in antioxidants. Not only are peanuts high in vitamins E and B6, but they're rich in minerals such as magnesium, iron, and zinc. Studies also show when paired with other nutrient-rich foods, this wonderful legume helps us absorb nutrients better, too.
For the longest time, livestock gained the most significant benefit from all these nutrients. Until modern methods came along, planting and harvesting peanuts were labor-intensive and risky endeavors for farmers. Gradually their popularity grew. Civil War soldiers found a fondness for them, and so did fans of PT Barnum's traveling circus. But what made it possible for peanuts to be grown in abundance was an advancement in farm technology. Just like the cotton gin revolutionized the cotton industry, planters and harvesters transformed not only the peanut farm but farming the world over.
Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jack ~ lyric from Take Me Out to the Ballgame (1908) by Jack Norworth and Albert Von Tilzer.
Dr. George Washington Carver
With the rise in peanut production, there also brought an increase of curious investigation into its possible uses. When the boll weevil wreaked havoc on the South's cotton crop, Dr. George Washington Carver, made a suggestion. He had been researching this amazing groundnut and suggested farmers diversify into peanuts. It was an economic boon to Southern farmers. He published his research "How to Grow the Peanut and 105 Ways of Preparing it for Human Consumption" in 1916. His continued research resulted in more than delicious uses for this goober, groundnut or ground pea. From shaving cream to plastics and cosmetics and even coffee, Dr. Carver's appetite for the peanut seemed to be unending.
Many of the peanut discoveries Dr. Carver made 100 years ago are still being used today.

Remember New Coke? Neither do we… 10 of the worst business decisions ever
Credit: Peggy_Marco
Everyone makes bad decisions, and that is not necessarily a terrible thing. Mistakes serve a purpose as valuable lessons that show us where and what needs improvement. But not all mistakes are the same. When it comes to business decisions, analyzing things in hindsight can make intelligent people seem dumb because they failed to recognize the potential behind what, at the moment, was nothing but promises.
Listed below, you will find ten of those decisions that cost millions and even billions of dollars to its makers. In the way of a black swan event, those decisions seem terrible now but, at the time of their making, were perfectly reasonable. Faced with these choices, what would you have done differently?
1When VHS ruled the world
Credit: Delaney Van
Back in the day when Blockbuster was a huge behemoth company synonymous with video entertainment, the idea of paying for a subscription to choose a limited number of movies on your TV seemed ludicrous, at least for the Blockbuster people.
In the late 1990s, an Internet upstart named Netflix began offering this exact service. And when Netflix executives flew down to Texas to make an offer to Blockbuster CEO in which, for $50 million, Netflix would join forces with Blockbuster and help it launch its own online service, the big suit laughed Netflix out of the office. Who's laughing now?
2M&Ms and E.T.
Credit: Ralston Smith
Passing an offer to showcase your product in one of the most legendary movies of all time does not seem like the most intelligent business decision. But, let’s face it, not everybody thought E.T. was going to be the huge blockbuster it ended up being.
And maybe that's what Mars candy executives were thinking back in 1980 when they passed on the offer to feature M&Ms in a new movie. Steven Spielberg was directing — he had already received Oscar nominations for both "Jaws" and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" — but his latest film, "1941," had been a flop. So, that was a no-go for the candy makers.
3Kodak sticks with film
Credit: Markus Spiske
A brand so huge that is very much remembered even when most of us haven’t used a single one of its products in decades, Kodak has been synonymous with photographs for over 100 years.
In 1975, one of its engineers successfully built the world's first digital camera, but the company stalled its release, afraid to abandon the film-and-paper product line that had brought it success. By the time Kodak finally shifted to digital in the late 1990s, the megapixel revolution had long passed by, and the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2012.
4Do you remember 'New Coke'?
Credit: James Yarema
Attempting to rewrite the recipe for success does not seem like the most sound business decision ever, right? Well, maybe if things had turned otherwise, we might be praising the courage of those same marketing executives who worried that kids were drawn to the syrupy-sweet kick of Pepsi and began tinkering with the original Coke recipe.
After two years of experimental batches, New Coke came out. On April 23, 1985, American consumers popped open their first cans of New Coke. Within days, hundreds of letters and phone calls poured into Coke's headquarters demanding a return to the old formula. On July 11, less than three months after its debut, New Coke was pulled from the shelves and replaced with Coca-Cola Classic.
5Those huge SALES might not be such a thing after all
Credit: Artem Beliaikin
Being honest in the clothing retailer business is not always the best marketing strategy, apparently. In 2012, a newly hired J.C. Penney CEO admitted that stores attract customers with "fake prices." If J.C. Penney wants to sell a shirt for $10, it tags it at $20 and then marks it down 50 percent during a weekend blowout sale. Sweet deal, right?
His strategy was to stop the promotions and replace them with "everyday low prices." But the loyal shoppers missed their coupons and sales and hit the Internet to complain. The CEO was fired after only 17 months on the job, and J.C. Penney quickly brought back the sales and phony jacked-up prices.
6Why telephone when you can telegram?
Credit: Chris Boyer
Western Union is a big company known as a fast way to send money around the world. But that wasn’t always the case. In the 19th century, the company got big with its telegram service. Before telephones, a telegram — transmitted by telegraphs using Morse code — was the fastest way to send a message across cities, states, and even countries.
When Alexander Graham Bell patented the first telephone in 1876, he wanted to sell it to Western Union, but the executives at the telegram giant didn’t like it. After the telephone caught up with the public, WU tried to copy the design but Graham Bell sued, won, and went on to rule American telecommunications for a century.
7Buying Google for $750K? No thanks!
Credit: Greg Bulla
The bargain of the century is a tag that has been attached to quite a few events in history, but this one could very well take the prize home. In 1999, Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin offered to sell their search technology to Excite for $1 million but dropped the price further when Excite showed no interest.
As we have said before, the benefit of hindsight makes us believe that the people at Excite didn’t have a clue about anything in life. But, to that company's credit, Google was just an unproven bundle of algorithms back in 1999, not the world-dominating technology goliath it is today.
8Remember MySpace?
Credit: Panos Sakalakis
Before all the social networks we have today, there was MySpace. Back in 2004, everybody had a MySpace profile and befriended everybody else. By 2005, MySpace was the fifth most-viewed Internet domain in America.
And then, News Corp billionaire Rupert Murdoch came along and bought MySpace's parent company in 2005 for $580 million. Mr. Murdoch promised huge revenues to Wall Street and filled the site with ads that alienated users, who flocked to Facebook.
9The Beatwho?
Credit: Minha Baek
Quite probably, there is no bigger mistake in the history of record label mistakes than this one here. In 1962, Decca Records had the opportunity to sign a little-known band called The Beatles. Ring any bells?
After a lackluster audition, Decca decided to pass, famously declaring that "guitar groups are on the way out." The Beatles went on to become the best-selling music act of all time. As for Decca Records, they’ll be forever remembered for making perhaps the worst decision in the history of music.
10Maybe Edsel is not the best name for a car
Credit: Peter Secan
Imagine naming a car after the founder’s son and then having that same car fail miserably on the market. Well, that happened. In the late 1950s, Ford introduced the Edsel, a new car named after Henry Ford’s son.
Despite the huge marketing campaign, the Edsel was a commercial disaster, being overpriced, overhyped, and overall underwhelming in design. The whole thing lost $250 million of Ford’s money on the Edsel, a massive fortune even for a car company back then.

Join Us For a Meet & Greet Bunny Adoption Event on Saturday, September 14th!
Jefferson SPCA is hosting a meet and greet bunny adoption event at Jefferson Feed, 4421 Jefferson Hwy., Jefferson, LA this Saturday, September 14th, 2024 from 10am-1pm.
Over the last 8-9 months, between 3 local rabbit rescues (Jefferson SPCA, Bunn Again and Lola & Friends) over 90 bunnies and guinea pigs have been rescued from two local parks, Kenner City Park and Lafreniere Park. Many owners are dumping their small animals in the park leaving them as prey. A handful we were too late to save them and they didn't make it out alive.
Hannah, our small adoption coordinator is passionate about bunnies and has so much information to share about rabbits and how they make wonderful pets and can bond with humans. They can even be litter box trained to roam free in your house just like a cat. Some of our adoptable bunnies have been with us over 6 months and not adopted because they are white bunnies. Cottonelle and her sweet 3 girls keep getting passed over for adoption and it's breaking our heart since they have been with us since Cottonelle gave birth the day she was rescued.
You can bring your bunny or bunnies to this event for a quick mani/pedi by our small animal adoption coordinator for a $10 Donation.
Available to volunteer? Please email hannah@jeffersonspca.org

7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level
This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.

Comedy House New Orleans
The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)
CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)
609-610 Fulton St
New Orleans, LA 70130
Mon, August 19
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

FALL RHYTHM & ROSES CONCERTS ANNOUNCED
Jon Cleary Kicks Off Star-Studded Line-Up for Friday Concerts
The Historic BK House & Gardens is offering music afficionados a special treat this fall with a new Rhythm & Roses Concert Series, extending the popular spring concerts into September, October and November. British-born, American funk and R&B musician Jon Cleary will kick off the series with a solo performance on Friday, September 27, at 6 pm. Cleary, an accomplished pianist, multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and songwriter, will perform from 6-9 pm in the beautifully manicured BK House Parterre Garden, 1113 Chartres Street.
Rhythm & Roses, presented by BK house neighbor and benefactor James Douglas Hislop, will run through Friday, November 1, except for October 11, and will feature a wide array of popular New Orleans talents. The opening concert will be presented in part by NOLAxNOLA.
Future dates include:
October 4: Jason Neville Funky Soul Band
October 18: Helen Gillet and Rebelle Musique
October 25: Dusky Waters & Rachel Maxann
November 1: Jelly Joseph
Tickets are priced at $30 for nonmembers and $25 for BK members and are available at www.bkhouse.org. Food and beverages will be sold on site. Because beverage sales support on-going maintenance of the garden, outside beverages will not be permitted.
Concert-goers are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance due to anticipated popularity of the event and size of the historic setting. Limited seating will be provided; however, attendees may bring small chairs provided space allows.
Also in September, BK House will host the second annual Beautiful Spaces Symposium on Saturday, September 14, focusing on the legacy of gardens in New Orleans. The inspiring day will explore the rich history, design and cultural significance of the city’s gardens and will feature distinguished experts covering a broad spectrum of landscapes from formal parterre gardens to indigenous wild spaces. The program will run from 10 am to 3 pm, with coffee, a boxed lunch and closing reception. Visit www.bkhouse.org for details.
Dedicated to maintaining the historical treasure, the annual BK House Soiree in the Vieux Carre’ will take place on Sunday, September 29. The fundraiser will be held from 5-8 pm, featuring John Boutte in the Courtyard and Amber Rachelle & the Sweet Potatoes in the Parterre Garden and a delicious Sunday Supper by 12 Seasons Catering & Events. Co-chaired by Sarah & Marshall Hevron and Carroll Gelderman Zimmer & Emory Zimmer, proceeds from the festive event will support major restorations to interior plaster and masonry, as well as the BK Endowment Fund. Tickets start at $100, with various levels available for individuals and sponsors, and may be purchased at www.bkhouse.org.
Future events will include additional concerts, literary programs, and a holiday wine tasting. Information about BK membership, which provides for a discount to many Museum events, as well as current and upcoming events at the BK House may be found at www.bkhouse.org.
