PEPPERONI PIZZA DAY

On September 20, we indulge on Pepperoni Pizza Day as we recognize the most popular pizza ever created. This food holiday celebrates the pizza enjoyed by young and old alike.

While pizza comes with many different toppings, pepperoni is the single most popular pizza. Whether you like your pizza Chicago Style or New York Style, thin and crispy or deep dish, top it with pepperoni!

According to legend, Raffaele Esposito created the first pizza in June of 1889. The Queen of Italy, Margherita of Savoy, inspired the pizza maker so much, he created the pie-shaped delicacy. In the queen's honor, he named it Pizza Margherita and topped the pizza with tomatoes, basil, and mozzarella. The colors represent the Italian flag.

Since then, pizza has evolved. It includes a multitude of toppings from anchovies and pineapple to sausage and bacon. However, pepperoni remains the most popular.

Italian-Americans developed the ever-popular topping through time-honored sausage-making techniques. Seasoned pork and beef sausage are smoked and cured. Once the product is ready to be sliced, it's placed on a delicious pie and baked.

NATIONAL PUNCH DAY | SEPTEMBER 20

National Punch Day on September 20 goes in several directions. How you interpret those ways is up to you. We, however, will be raising our glass wishing everyone a good day as we sip on our punch and relax.

While one perspective suggests honoring tools used to make holes, another points to a day created to throw a few punches at a punching bag. However, we will direct you toward the thirst-quenching version instead. Besides, this delicious, refreshing drink sparkles with celebration.

A wide assortment of drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, fall into the category of punch. A combination of fruit juice and a carbonated beverage, the colorful, bubbly drink sparkles with party personality. In fact, parties, weddings, and other celebrations serve punch as part of the centerpiece at the beverage table. Large wide bowls known as punch bowls provide a beautiful vessel for serving punch.

In the early 17th century, punch made its appearance. It's believed sailors en route to England via India created the drink. Punch quickly grew in popularity and soon spread to other countries.

The word punch is a loanword from Hindi panch (meaning five). Originally, punch was made with five ingredients: alcohol, sugar, lemon, water, and tea or spices. It was called paantsch.

Soft drink manufacturers today distribute many types of “fruit punch” beverages. Most punch mixes are red in color. However, despite the name, they contain a small fraction of fruit juice. Sugar, corn syrup, citric acid, and artificial flavors make up the main ingredients.

It’s Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s Manchac & Middendorf’s Slidell! Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September, handmade paper-thin fettuccine is on the menu.

This mouth-watering dish is served with your choice of classic Alfredo or Marinara Sauce and topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese with optional add-ons of shrimp, crabmeat and chicken.

  • Fettuccine with Alfredo Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
  • Fettuccine with Marinara Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
  • Optional add-ons:
  • Shrimp
  • Crabmeat
  • Chicken
  • Side of Fettuccine topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese

Fun Facts:

  • Our handmade, paper-thin fettuccine was a guest favorite at Bella Luna in the French Quarter. Bella Luna was a fine dining restaurant owned and operated by Horst and Karen Pfeifer. It closed due to Hurricane Katrina and never reopened. The memory of Bella Luna lives on through Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s. Same Pasta. Same Taste. None of the Fancy.
  • Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer makes the fettuccine from scratch which consists solely of Semolina flour and eggs. It’s a very time consuming process to make the fettuccine so paper-thin, but it’s definitely worth it.
  • Fettuccine is available all day (lunch and dinner).
  • Our full menu is also available.
  • Uncooked fettuccine is also available for purchase to make a quick meal at home.

We hope you can join us for Fettuccine Frenzy — Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September!

Giraffes, Zebras and Peafowl, Oh My!

Doesn’t matter whether you’re young or simply young at heart; a fall trip to Global Wildlife’s 900-acre “African savanna in Louisiana” should be high on your list of must-do experiences. From September through December, the wildlife preserve near Folsom, LA, buzzes with excitement during the breeding and birthing season.

As unique as human fingerprints, no two Grant’s zebras have the same striping pattern. A group of zebras is called a dazzle, and with good reason. When they huddle together it’s difficult for predators to pick out an individual zebra to prey upon. Prior to giving birth, mother zebras will separate themselves from the herd. After the foal is born, mom and baby will study each other for hours, memorizing each other’s striping pattern and imprinting vocalizations and scents. This defense mechanism helps mom and foal to reunite quickly if they are separated during a chase. The Grant’s zebra herd has grown by two this autumn, and watching the new foals follow their mom, prancing around on spindly little legs, is sure to bring smiles of delight.

At Global Wildlife’s Visitor Center, a trio of new peachicks religiously follow their mother, Pearl the Indian blue peahen, who is teaching them how to forage for insects and other foods. Pearl faithfully sat on a nest she built on the ground in the Kangaroo Walkabout, and this is her first clutch of chicks to hatch. Pearl communicates with her babies using clucks and calls, encouraging them not to wander far from her protective gaze. Sharp-eyed guests might catch a glimpse of them when they visit!

What is the modern equivalent of the word "erstwhile"?

Hidden

Former

Current

Future

"Former" serves as the contemporary equivalent of the term "erstwhile," both conveying the idea of something that was once in a particular state or role but is no longer so. While "erstwhile" often carries a literary or formal tone, "former" is more commonly used in everyday language, making it accessible to a broader audience. This transition reflects the evolution of language, where simpler terms often replace more archaic ones. Whether referring to a former president, a bygone era, or past relationships, "former" effectively communicates the sense of something that has changed or is no longer in existence.

- In celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15-October 15), Felipe’s Taqueria is thrilled to announce its eighth annual Fiesta Fest, set to take place on Friday, September 20, at the restaurant’s Mid-City location. This year’s festivities will not only highlight the delicious cuisine, music, rhythms, and artistry of Latine culture, but 25% of total event proceeds will be donated to Puentes, an organization dedicated to providing tools and opportunities for local Latine students to empower themselves through leadership, development, and education.

“New Orleans has a long history of influence and cultural exchange with Latin America, particularly following Hurricane Katrina, and at Felipe’s Taqueria, we want to continue to honor, show respect, and celebrate that relationship. It is not lost upon our Company the influence and role Latin Americans have played in our brand. This year, we are especially proud to partner with Puentes to support the new generations of Latine members who call New Orleans home,” said Pike Howard, Owner, Felipe’s Taqueria.

“At Puentes we believe that a vibrant Latine voice and presence make our beloved city a better place,” said Angela Ramirez, Executive Director, Puentes. “We are thrilled to have businesses like Felipe’s Taqueria which intentionally recognize and celebrate the contributions of Latin American cultures to this city. And even though the services we provide are different, I believe we have one common goal which is to build connections between cultures to support access to opportunity.”

In addition to the festivities, Felipe’s will offer a couple of exclusive culinary specials to commemorate National Hispanic Heritage Month:

Fiesta Fest will take place Friday, September 20, from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Mid-City location at 411-1 N Carrollton Avenue. Attendees can look forward to an exciting entertainment lineup, including the 20-piece band La Tran-K Band and a performance from Ballet Folklorico Viva Mi Tierra. What does "zeitgeber" mean?

Dreamer

zeitgeber

/ˈzaɪtˌɡeɪbər/

Definition: A stimulus, such as light or temperature, that helps to regulate the biological clock of an organism by synchronizing its internal rhythms with the external environment.

Origin: From the German words "Zeit" meaning "time" and "geber" meaning "giver".

Example: Natural light serves as a primary zeitgeber, influencing the sleep-wake cycles of many living organisms.

An environmental cue, or zeitgeber, is a critical factor in regulating biological rhythms in living organisms. These cues, which include natural light, temperature changes, and seasonal variations, help synchronize internal clocks with the external environment. For example, exposure to sunlight in the morning can signal the brain to produce hormones that promote wakefulness, while darkness prompts the release of melatonin to encourage sleep. By responding to these environmental signals, organisms can maintain optimal functioning, ensuring their activities align with the natural cycles of day and night, which is essential for overall health and well-being.

PENNY DREADFULS: The REMARKABLE ROOMING-HOUSE of MADAME LE MONDE
by Tennessee Williams

It’s Tennessee Williams as you’ve never seen him as these unhinged vignettes probe the macabre corners of the human psyche. Wacky, weird, and wild desire splatters in all directions on the stage as three of Williams’ most outrageous stories come to life in a one-of-a-kind choose-your-own-adventure night of curiosities and creeps. Not for kids and not for the faint of heart!
The night of theatre will also include Williams'
Why Do You Smoke So Much, Lily & The Case Of The Crushed Petunias.

Playmakers Theater been producing terrific shows from Covington’s Sans Souci Forest since 1955. This Saturday we raise the curtain on our 70th season with the uproarious comedy ‘Til Beth Do Us Part, by Jones Hope Wooten, the same team that wrote 2023’s sellout hit, The Savannah Sipping Society. Directed by Derek Thrush, the madcap comedy revolves around an ambitious, conniving assistant who attempts to take over her harried boss’s business and her husband.

‘Til Beth Do Us Part is a side-splitting comic romp about careens around the strained marriage of Gibby and Suzannah, a couple who have allowed their 27-year marriage grow stale. When new assistant Beth steps in the fireworks begin. Whether you’re married, single, rethinking your divorce or currently being controlled by someone up to no good, you’re sure to enjoy this family friendly, laugh-out-loud comedy.

The cast features Joanna Parr, Shawn Patterson, Stephanie Sayles, Jen Patterson, Laura Hayes, Daniel Jenkins, and Nada Elkassouf. Assistant director is Jen Patterson.

There will be some important changes at Playmakers Theater beginning this season. Evening curtain times will be 7:30 p.m. instead of 7 p.m. to help patrons navigate bridge construction traffic. We will also be adding Friday evening performances. And Playmakers will once again offer reserved seating.

Season tickets are available for $130 and on sale now at BonTempsTix.com at the “Get Your Season Tickets Now” link below. Individual tickets for ‘Til Beth Do Us Part are $20 and also available at the BonTempsTix.com “Get Your Tickets Now” link below. Several cast members will perform with real instruments live onstage at Jefferson Performing Arts Center September 13-22, 2024.

Based on the 2003 movie, School of Rock: The Musical tells the story of Dewey Finn, a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school who turns his class into a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, mind-blowing rock band. With music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, the musical features 14 new songs and songs from the original movie.

Nathan (Dewey) and four youth performers will be playing their instruments live on stage: Merah Benoit (Katie) will play bass guitar, Drago Han (Lawrence) will play keyboards, August Doussan (Freddie) will play drums, and Andrew Letellier (Zack) will play guitar. Some of the youth musicians are making their acting debuts (August Doussan) while others are seasoned performers (such as Merah Benoit) who are learning their instruments for their roles in this show.

At age 8, he joined School of Rock Metairie/New Orleans and quickly rose to become a drummer for the prestigious School of Rock House Band. NATIONAL FRIED RICE DAY

Order up a side of Hibachi Chicken Rice to celebrate National Fried Rice Day on September 20. During this food holiday, fried rice stars as the centerpiece of the meal.

Its flavor captures the diners' hearts and keeps them coming back for more. Together with shrimp, chicken or beef, fried rice makes a complete meal. More adventurous foodies can spice it up with Spicy Chicken Rice.

Made with a combination of long-grained rice, peas, carrots and onions, fried rice requires perfectly incorporated eggs to bring it all together.

While enjoying a meal with fried rice, remember that it compliments vegetables and protein equally well. Another great reason to celebrate is that fried rice goes well with your favorite flavors. Sweet, sour, spicy or a combination, you can't go wrong with fried rice! When all the flavors and aromas add up to a memorable meal, the celebrating is easy.

NATIONAL STRING CHEESE DAY

It's time for America to stand together in support of our love for String Cheese. Join us as we celebrate National String Cheese Day on September 20. Whether you call it String Cheese, Snack Cheese or Cheese Sticks...there's no denying that you call it delicious!

Pack it for a picnic or a hike. Pass it out for a team snack. And of course, no lunch is complete without this tasty treat. You’ve got to hand it to String Cheese—it’s the fun, easy and protein-packed food that goes wherever you do! It’s no wonder String Cheese has so much “a-peel” with both kids and adults alike. Usually made with mozzarella, String Cheese melts easily when heated making it an excellent addition to recipes, too.

Perhaps the most enjoyable part of String Cheese is deciding how to eat it. Most people go for the classic “peel down and chow down” method—separating each stick into thin strands. (After all, it is kind of fun to play with your food!) Others prefer the “get down to business” approach of removing the wrapper and biting into the stick. (Why wait to get that delicious cheese into your belly?) However, you choose to eat it, get your hands on some every September 20th!

Impatience

forbearance

/fɔːrˈbɛrəns/

Definition: the act of refraining from exercising a legal right, especially enforcing the payment of a debt; patience and self-control in the face of difficulty or provocation.

Origin: Middle English, from Old French "forbearance," from Latin "foris," meaning "to bear or endure."

Example: Despite the delays in the project, her forbearance allowed the team to regroup and find a solution without escalating tensions.

Patience is an essential quality that embodies the essence of forbearance. It involves the ability to endure difficult situations without becoming frustrated or angry. When faced with challenges, exercising patience means choosing to hold back immediate reactions and allowing time for resolution. Forbearance requires a deep understanding that some circumstances are beyond one’s control, and it encourages a calm approach to adversity. By practicing patience, individuals can navigate conflicts with grace, promoting harmony and understanding. Ultimately, forbearance exemplifies a profound strength rooted in patience, leading to more thoughtful responses in both personal and social interactions.

New Orleans (History)

Nora Coyle

Decatur Street in New Orleans in 1959

Decatur Street is a street in the French Quarter that runs parallel to the Mississippi River. Decatur was formerly known as "Levee Street" or Rue de la Levée, as it was originally the location of the levee. In 1870, when the river had altered its course, it was renamed "Decatur Street" in honor of the naval hero Stephen Decatur Jr.

Decatur begins at Canal Street, runs across the French Quarter, and terminates at St. Ferdinand Street in the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood. The most famous sights on Decatur Street are Jackson Square and nearby Café du Monde.

For about a century, upper Decatur Street (the portion closer to Canal Street) had many businesses catering to sailors visiting the port of New Orleans. In the late 20th century, it was redeveloped and became more upscale, with establishments such as the House of Blues. In the late 20th century, lower Decatur Street became a center of local punk and goth subculture. It contains various bars and musical venues and is not far from Faubourg Marigny's Frenchmen Street venues.

Klara and Drago Cvitanovich, two immigrants from Croatia, came to the U.S. in 1958 with little money and forged a seafood restaurant empire known throughout the world. With hard work, tenacity and the willpower to seize opportunity, Drago and Klara turned their mom-and-pop restaurant into a Crescent City icon and invented a New Orleans staple – the charbroiled oyster – a dish that nearly every seafood restaurant in the country tries to emulate. Their inspiring story validates the power of hard work, perseverance, faith in family and generosity.

Doors open at 12:00 pm. This event is FREE and open to the public. Ample parking is available at the rear of the building. Enjoy delicious German food, tasty beers and a full bar.

Comedy House New Orleans

The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)

CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)

609-610 Fulton St

New Orleans, LA 70130

Mon, August 19

8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

(Entry at 7:30 pm)

The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.

Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.

The list of performers? A total mystery.

The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.

How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.

When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.

Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

Join the award-winning (1st place, baby!) NOLA Jitterbugs for a 6-week series with live music in the last class!

Our live music classes with local musicians and culture bearers, as well as our overall emphasis on music appreciation is what makes our lessons stand out among the rest!

Starts at The Contemporary Arts Center!

6-7pm Intro to Swing

For total beginners to swing dancing or dancing of any kind. Also for those looking to refresh their basics and learn some ragtime dances. We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.

7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level

This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.

No partner required to take either of these classes. Come alone or with friends!

Performances by Rebirth Brass Band, Where Y'acht, Yellow Box Circus and Bubble Lady Linda offer quality entertainment while guests can test their luck in a luxury silent auction. Crafts, games and an action-packed scavenger hunt will be made available for kiddos to explore as well. All proceeds will benefit the 73,000 animals supported by the LASPCA.

Individual, VIP and Pooch Pass tickets can be purchased here.

The Louisiana SPCA is dedicated to promoting, protecting and advancing the well-being of Louisiana’s companion animals. Through adoption, education and community outreach LASPCA thrives to create a more humane society for animals and people alike.

Billy Nungesser Lt. Governor of Louisiana

For the fourth consecutive year, Louisiana will showcase its vibrant culture in the 2025 Tournament of Rose Parade in Pasadena, California! This year’s float, featuring a Louisiana alligator adorned with beads, a Cajun dance hall, and pots of boiled seafood, perfectly captures the essence of a “Louisiana Saturday Night.” Plus, enjoy mid-parade entertainment by rising country star Timothy Wayne!

We can’t wait to share Louisiana’s celebratory spirit and unique culture with the world once again.
