NATIONAL CHOCOLATE MILK DAY
Each year on September 27 folks enjoy a tall frosty glass to celebrate National Chocolate Milk Day. Pour yourself a glass and have a seat. It's time to kick back to learn about chocolate milk.
In the late 1680s, an Irish-born physician by the name of Sir Hans Sloane invented the chocolatey beverage that became known as chocolate milk. Sloane was offered the position of personal physician to an English Duke in Jamaica. Sloane jumped at the opportunity because Jamaica interested the naturalist in him. While in Jamaica, Sloane encountered a local beverage. The locals mixed cocoa and water together. However, when Sloane tasted it, he reported the flavor to be nauseating.
Sloane would experiment experiment with the beverage and found a way to combine cocoa with milk. The creamy combination made it a more pleasant-tasting drink. He later returned to England with the chocolate recipe in hand. Initially, apothecaries introduced the concoction as a medicine.
Generations later, chocolate milk lovers enjoy their treat in a variety of ways. It can be purchased premixed by the jug or individual serving. For a custom mix, powders and syrups allow us to make it as chocolatey as we like at home.

Helene storm threats in Florida, Georgia
Storm surge is a major threat with Helene, and some areas along the Big Bend area of Florida could see up to 15 ft of storm surge, inundating houses, cars and businesses.
Residents in the Deep South, especially Florida and Georgia, should continue to keep a close eye on this system, as life-threatening storm surge, hurricane-force winds, and spin-up tornadoes are possible starting on Wednesday.
That said, Hurricane Warnings are now in effect for the Yucatan Peninsula, the Big Bend and the Panhandle of Florida, reaching all the way into South Georgia. Topical Storm Warnings are in effect for the entire Florida Peninsula.

It’s Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s Manchac & Middendorf’s Slidell! Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September, handmade paper-thin fettuccine is on the menu.
This mouth-watering dish is served with your choice of classic Alfredo or Marinara Sauce and topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese with optional add-ons of shrimp, crabmeat and chicken.
- Fettuccine with Alfredo Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
- Fettuccine with Marinara Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
- Optional add-ons:
- Shrimp
- Crabmeat
- Chicken
- Side of Fettuccine topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
Fun Facts:
- Our handmade, paper-thin fettuccine was a guest favorite at Bella Luna in the French Quarter. Bella Luna was a fine dining restaurant owned and operated by Horst and Karen Pfeifer. It closed due to Hurricane Katrina and never reopened. The memory of Bella Luna lives on through Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s. Same Pasta. Same Taste. None of the Fancy.
- Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer makes the fettuccine from scratch which consists solely of Semolina flour and eggs. It’s a very time consuming process to make the fettuccine so paper-thin, but it’s definitely worth it.
- Fettuccine is available all day (lunch and dinner).
- Our full menu is also available.
- Uncooked fettuccine is also available for purchase to make a quick meal at home.
We hope you can join us for Fettuccine Frenzy — Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September!

The modern equivalent of the word "hie" is "hurry." Both terms convey a sense of urgency and promptness, urging someone to move quickly or act swiftly. "Hie," an archaic term often found in literature and poetry, suggests a brisk pace or haste, typically used in the context of urging someone to go or do something without delay. In contemporary language, "hurry" serves the same purpose, reflecting our fast-paced society where time is often of the essence. Whether in casual conversation or written communication, "hurry" effectively captures the zest and immediacy originally encapsulated by "hie." | | | |

By: Marigny Beter
Celebrating NOLA Women's History
On Friday, September 27, 2024 at 1 p.m., the Roosevelt New Orleans invites women to an exciting afternoon to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the "Stormin' of the Sazerac." This gathering will take place at the event's namesake, the Sazerac Bar, and be emceed by WDSU news anchor Sula Kim.
Stormin' of the Sazerac's 75th Anniversary
[The Roosevelt New Orleans, A Waldorf Astoria Hotel]
Attendees of the 2024 Stormin' of the Sazerac can expect a three-course lunch, fashion show, live entertainment, and recognition of the 2024 Reigning Spirit of the Sazerac Nina Compton, who is chef and owner of Compère Lapin restaurant, BABs Nola, and Nina's Creole Cottage. The fashion show will highlight vintage-inspired dresses provided by local retailer Italy Direct.
After the luncheon at 3 p.m., participants will "storm" the bar while accompanied by a second line. Guests are encouraged to wear late '40s and early '50s fashion in the style of the women who first stormed the Sazerac Bar all those years ago.
Tickets for the 2024 Stormin' of the Sazerac are $115 each, excluding tax and gratuity, and can be reserved here or by calling 504-335-3129.
What is the "Stormin' of the Sazerac?"
On September 26, 1949, a group of women marched into the Sazerac Bar and demanded service during a time when the bar would only serve women on Mardi Gras Day. This protest was dubbed the "Stormin' of the Sazerac" and has become a celebrated event at the Roosevelt Hotel.

NATIONAL CORNED BEEF HASH DAY
September 27 means we are adding flavor to every meal while cleaning out the fridge, because it's National Corned Beef Hash Day!
Making corned beef hash is a great way to use up leftovers. Corned beef hash became popular during and after World War II. Since rationing limited the availability of fresh meat, corned beef filled the gap. Cooks became creative with herbs, spices, and leftovers. Nothing was wasted. In lean times, stretching a meal became a priority.
The Hormel Company claims it introduced corned beef hash and roast beef hash to the United States as early as 1950. However, World War II reporter, Betty Wason, lists a corned beef hash recipe in her Cooking Without Cans cookbook printed in 1943. Other forms of hash existed as part of the American diet since at least the 19th century. The numerous recipes available before that time also attest to the country's love of the dish as does the existence of many “hash houses” named after the dish.

Top 8 Groundbreaking Scientific Discoveries of the Decade
science
As we delve deeper into the 21st century, our understanding of the world around us continues to expand at an unprecedented pace. The last decade has been particularly rich in groundbreaking scientific discoveries, revolutionizing fields such as physics, biology, medicine, and astronomy. This post will highlight eight of the most significant scientific breakthroughs of the past decade, all of which have significantly altered our perception of the world and universe we live in.
The Higgs Boson Discovery
In 2012, scientists at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) confirmed the existence of the Higgs Boson, also known as the "God particle". This elusive subatomic particle, first theorized in 1964 by physicist Peter Higgs, provides other particles with mass. The discovery, made in the Large Hadron Collider, the world's largest and most powerful particle accelerator, was a major milestone in understanding the universe's fundamental structure.
CRISPR-Cas9 Gene Editing
Another monumental discovery of the last decade is CRISPR-Cas9, a revolutionary technique for editing genes. Unveiled in 2012, this technology allows scientists to "cut and paste" DNA strands with high precision, offering promising avenues for treating genetic diseases, improving crop yields, and potentially even tinkering with human evolution.
Gravitational Waves Detected
Albert Einstein first predicted gravitational waves in his theory of general relativity over a century ago. However, it was not until 2016 that scientists at the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) were able to detect these ripples in spacetime, caused by two black holes merging into one. This discovery opened up a new way of studying the universe by observing gravitational waves.
Treatment for Spinal Muscular Atrophy
In 2016, the FDA approved Spinraza, the first-ever treatment for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). This rare and often fatal genetic disease causes muscle weakness and atrophy. Spinraza, which modifies the SMN2 gene to produce more of a protein essential for muscle control, has given hope to many individuals and families affected by SMA.
Discovery of TRAPPIST-1 Exoplanets
In 2017, NASA announced the discovery of seven Earth-sized exoplanets orbiting a star named TRAPPIST-1, located about 40 light-years away from us. Three of these planets are in the star's habitable zone, where conditions might be just right to support liquid water and perhaps even life. This discovery has reshaped our understanding of the potential for life beyond Earth.
Immunotherapy for Cancer
In the past decade, immunotherapy has emerged as a groundbreaking approach to treating cancer. Instead of directly attacking cancerous cells, immunotherapy enhances the body's immune system to fight the disease. The FDA's approval of several immunotherapeutic drugs, such as Keytruda and Opdivo, signifies a promising new era in cancer treatment.
Quantum Supremacy Achieved
In 2019, Google's quantum computer, Sycamore, performed a calculation in 200 seconds that would take the world's most powerful supercomputers approximately 10,000 years. This milestone, known as "quantum supremacy," marked a significant step forward in the field of quantum computing, which could revolutionize everything from drug discovery to climate modeling.
COVID-19 Vaccines Development
Undoubtedly, one of the most recent and impactful scientific breakthroughs is the rapid development of COVID-19 vaccines. Using mRNA technology, pharmaceutical companies like Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna developed effective vaccines in record time, marking a significant victory in the fight against the pandemic and demonstrating the astounding potential of mRNA vaccines.
These are just a few of the many scientific discoveries of the past decade that have transformed our understanding of the world and the universe. As science continues to progress at an accelerating rate, we can only imagine what groundbreaking discoveries the next decade will bring.

Nickel-A-Dance Fall 2024 Season to Begin on Frenchmen Street
by: OffBeat Staff
The fall 2024 season of Nickel-A-Dance, a beloved free traditional jazz concert series, is set to begin on September 29. For over three decades, Nickel-A-Dance has brought live jazz to the public, offering an afternoon of family-friendly entertainment on Sundays from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. This year, the series moves to a new location at Favela Chic, located at 525 Frenchmen Street, continuing its tradition on this famous music corridor.
Originally started in 1994, Nickel-A-Dance has become a staple for fans of New Orleans jazz who may not frequent nightclubs. It attracts a diverse crowd, including children, families, and seniors, all coming together to celebrate traditional jazz as America’s original dance music. This fall’s lineup will feature some of the city’s most renowned jazz musicians.
The season kicks off on September 29 with trumpeter Kevin Louis and The Palm Court Jazz Band. Louis, a New Orleans native and graduate of the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA), has toured internationally and performed with legends such as Jimmy Heath and the Duke Ellington Orchestra. He brings The Palm Court Jazz Band, previously a fixture at the now-closed Palm Court Jazz Café, to the stage for a lively opening night.
On October 6, Nickel-A-Dance will host Duke Heitger and The Crescent City Joymakers. Heitger, a classic jazz trumpeter known for his virtuosity, has performed internationally and is a long-standing performer on the Steamboat Natchez. His band is a staple of Nickel-A-Dance and promises a night of spirited traditional jazz.
Next, on October 13, Mark Braud and His Sunday Night All-Stars will take the stage. Braud, part of the musical Brunious and Santiago families, has been a fixture in the New Orleans jazz scene since his youth. He has performed with Harry Connick Jr., Preservation Hall Jazz Band, and many other notable artists. His band will bring a blend of traditional jazz and contemporary flair to the series.
Lars Edegran and The Palm Court Jazz All-Stars are set to perform on October 20. Edegran, originally from Sweden, has been a New Orleans resident since 1966 and is known for his versatility on piano, guitar, and banjo. He has worked with jazz greats like Earl Hines and George Lewis, and his band will showcase the best of New Orleans traditional jazz.
The fall series will conclude on October 27 with Gregg Stafford and The Jazz Hounds. Stafford, a respected trumpeter and vocalist, has led several prominent New Orleans jazz bands, including Danny Barker’s Jazz Hounds and the Young Tuxedo Brass Band. He has dedicated his career to preserving the musical traditions of New Orleans and remains an active figure in the city’s jazz community.

Historic BK House and Garden's Soiree in the Vieux Carre-Sunday, September 29, 2024 | 5:00 – 8:00 PM
Please join us as the sun sets over Chartres Street for our annual Soirée in the Vieux Carré.
This year’s event is sure to be magical with music by John Boutté and Amber Rachelle & The Sweet Potatoes and a delicious Sunday supper by 12 Seasons Catering & Events.
Each year, our annual fundraiser supports a major capital improvement project, ensuring the long-term viability and versatility of the site. This year’s fundraiser will support major restorations to interior plaster and masonry.
We are pleased to be honoring our generous patron, the late Avis Ogilvy-Moore, whose bequest has allowed BK House to set up an Endowment fund, ensuring the long-term viability of the organization.
The Historic BK House & Gardens is a National Historic Landmark built in 1826. This architectural treasure is an outstanding example of a raised center hall villa and includes both Creole and American features in an elaborately detailed residence. BK House’s diverse history includes the stories of those who both lived and labored here for nearly 200 years, offering a unique educational experience to visitors, which furthers the understanding of New Orleans history. The house, parterre garden and lovely courtyard have been featured in several films and television shows and are favorites for guided tours, weddings, and special events.

609-610 Fulton St
New Orleans, LA 70130
Mon, August 19
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

New Orleans– West Bank Hispanic Heritage Festival organizers announced today that over 30 vendors will participate in this year’s inaugural event to bring a day of vibrant music, diverse culinary offerings, and community celebrations to the University of Holy Cross (UHC) campus in Algiers on October 12, 2024, from 11 a.m. - 7 p.m.
This year’s festival, free and open to the public, will have offerings for everyone including a full lineup of music, entertainment for adults and kids, and a large community health event. From live performances to delicious food, the festival is designed to honor Hispanic heritage in an inclusive environment where everyone is welcome.
“Our mission is to bring together people from all backgrounds throughout the city,” said Stephanie Davi McNeely, Chair of the West Bank Hispanic Heritage Festival and the First Lady of the University of Holy Cross. “The festival highlights the diversity of our Hispanic culture through music, food, art and education in a fun, family-friendly and free environment, right in the heart of the UHC campus.”
Live entertainment will keep the crowd energized throughout the day, with performances on the Redmann Law Stage by:
- La Tran-K Band – An energetic band that will keep the festivities lively with their dynamic tunes.
- Grupo Sensación – Bringing traditional and contemporary Latin sounds that will keep the crowd dancing.
- Fermin Ceballos - Performing a mix of modern and traditional Hispanic music.
- Mariachi Jalisco – Enjoy the classic mariachi tunes that celebrate the heart of Hispanic music.
- Ballet Folklórico Vive Mi Tierra – Traditional Mexican folk dance performances showcasing vibrant costumes and storytelling through movement.
- Dile Que NOLA – A local favorite bringing their unique Latin fusion sounds to the stage.
- ZUMBA with Sonia G Fitness – An energizing Zumba session to get everyone moving.
The Law Office of John Redmann, LLC serves many in the Hispanic community, and their sponsorship of the festival stage is part of their commitment to celebrating the many cultures in our area.
Additionally, a diverse lineup of food vendors and food trucks will offer a taste of authentic Hispanic and local flavors. Festival-goers can indulge in dishes from:
- Food Vendors: Anita’s Quesabirrias, Casita Jasmyn, Chick Fil A, Coop’s Burgers, El Macho Grill, Curramba La Bella Colombian Food, Hokena’s Cuisine, La Chilanga, Malkriados Kitchen, Mexi-pops by Angie, Mimas Peruvian Dessert, Mimi’s Sweets & Treats, Piece of Kookie, Life Gave Lemons Lemonade, Pistachio Coffee, The Creative Grind, and Waska.

“Our UHC community is approximately 12 percent Hispanic, and we are excited to showcase not only the strong educational programs and welcoming campus environment that UHC offers, but also hope attendees are able to discover something new about the Hispanic culture that plays such an important role in our community,” said Dr. Stanton McNeely, president of the University of Holy Cross.

For the fourth consecutive year, Louisiana will showcase its vibrant culture in the 2025 Tournament of Rose Parade in Pasadena, California! This year’s float, featuring a Louisiana alligator adorned with beads, a Cajun dance hall, and pots of boiled seafood, perfectly captures the essence of a “Louisiana Saturday Night.” Plus, enjoy mid-parade entertainment by rising country star Timothy Wayne!
