Medieval Games a Success!

The Friday Update is late this week due to Ms. Cori being at the Medieval Games with the Sunflower Class yesterday. The squires from the Kingdom of Madrone Trail proved themselves throughout the day in challenge activities, archery, spear throwing, axe throwing, and jousting. Fun was had by all!

From the Board

Hello Madrone Trail,

Spring is here and the end of the school year is in sight. We are happy report that our community is in good shape financially and in overall well being. With the end of the school year approaching we the board want to do all we can to ensure the school continues to thrive. For this reason within the next couple of weeks you will receive communication about a climate survey that we would love for every single family to fill out. Last year we had 30 families fill it out and the information is so helpful to understanding the state of our school so that we can see where we are excelling and what areas need improvement. We humbly ask that you prioritize setting some time aside to fill out the climate survey. This is helpful to the board but ultimately it will benefit your own children. We would love to see 100 families or more fill out our survey this year. So please be on the look out for the link in the next couple of weeks in the Friday Update and set some time aside to give us thoughtful feedback. We are working on several other ways to get the link out to you all so it is as easy as possible to access. We are so grateful for the opportunity to serve this community and welcome any and all feedback. Feel free to reach out at  board@madronetrail.org.

For the good of the school,

Madrone Trail Board of Directors

From the May Faire Committee

May Faire will be Saturday, May 3rd from 11-3 pm. Bring your family and friends for a fun day of music, dancing, delicious food, games and prizes! Children must arrive by 10:30 a.m. dressed in festive white and light colored attire, and adults are encouraged to dress accordingly as well.

We always need a lot of help to make this a fun and successful event. The volunteer sign-up sheet is ready to fill in. Click the button below to view it. There are multiple tabs on the sheet, so make sure to visit your child's class page sa well. Each class has a booth. Check with your parent rep to see what supplies are needed. Each class is responsible for bringing tables and canopy. We will need extra canopies as well as a few other items for the additional booths. Please fill in slots to help out at the food, Bake Sale and flower crown booths too.

Lastly, Ms. Cori is curating a lending library for white and light colored clothing to use at May Faire. If you have any May Faire appropriate clothes to donate to it, please give them to Ms. Sherrie in the office. If you are an avid thrift store shopper, keep your eyes out for white clothing, especially dresses and skirts, and consider purchasing a few to donate. We already have several in the library, as well as a good number of shirts, but would love to have a wider selection of sizes at hand. In the week leading up to May Faire, the "library" will be open to borrow clothes from if you need something for your child to wear. More details to come in the following weeks.

Cans & Bottles Drive

The 8th grade class would like to thank everybody who has donated cans and bottles to their class throughout the year. For the next few weeks Bottle Drop will add an extra 20% to all bags turned in, so this is a great time to bring in those cans and bottles you have been meaning to drop off!

Farm-to-School Committee Update

Our Garden Stewardship Day is coming up on April 26th from 10-2 pm. Generously, Kona Bento has offered to donate lunch for our crew! The Farm-to-School Committee is also working out a child distraction plan (aka child care) so you can bring the wee ones along as well. Of course, they can help in the garden where appropriate as well… Projects include planting flowers, weeding, pruning and raised bed maintenance. Hope to see you y’all there!

From the Athletic Director

Track & Field

We had a great showing once again, this time at a mid-large school track meet that involved Talent Middle School with over 100 athletes and Ponderosa from Klamath Falls with 65 athletes. Our 35 athletes that we had that day did great! Aside from just listing notable finishes, I want to take the time to recognize students that had at least one PR (Personal record) Wednesday. Their improvement is a direct result of their dedication in practice. Look for a (PR) next to a result and a list of additional athletes that had a PR below the notable finishes. (32 of our 35 athletes had at least one PR and many athletes had a PR in multiple events) Way to go!

Enjoy some pics of our track kids in their warm ups and soccer club below.

Apparel Sponsor

As the track parents already know; it has been my dream for the last few years to get warm up sets here at Madrone that we can use year round for multiple sports. Well, that dream became a reality this year in large part because of our sponsors, but also because of Wooter Apparel giving us a 50% sponsorship. So thanks to our newest sponsor; Wooter Apparel. The shipping time and 100% accuracy of our order was impressive!

Spotlight on 5th grade

The Marigold class has had such a comprehensive, rich 5th grade year, covering so many fascinating subjects, periods of history and different regions of the globe. Since our class play in February, we took a deep dive into the history and geography of the United States. Students learned about many famous individuals, such as Sitting Bull and Harriet Tubman, and how European nations came to settle in North America and shape the land. The kids learned about all the forces that influenced modern American culture, including the different nationalities of people that immigrated to the US and forged a new way of life, often clashing with native tribes with their ideologies. Some highlights of the block included early pioneer days in America, building the railroad, the Erie Canal, The Louisiana purchase, the Great Lakes region of French fur trappers and much more. We studied each region of the country in detail and even learned some early American folk songs.

In fifth grade, students are ready for true history lessons and tackling the concept of time. This is very different from how students learn through legends and creation stories in the earlier grades. It is so wonderful to see how eager they are to learn about the past and understand it in fifth grade. So far, we have studied many ancient eastern civilizations, the history of the United States and soon the ancient history of Greece.

After our block on the geography and history of America, we switched to a very different subject, that of Greek mythology. Fifth grade is said to be a time of balance and harmony for students. The ancient Greek culture exemplifies this. In fifth grade, we cover two separate blocks on Greece. The first block includes the mythology of the ancient peoples. In March, we studied the archetypal Greek legends which included the pantheon of Greek gods and goddesses. The Marigold students relished these stories and looked forward to hearing new ones each day. They wrote copious narratives in their books and included many stunning images to accompany their writing. In a few weeks, the class will take part in the Olympiad, a tradition in Waldorf schools which recapitulates the experience of Greek games as they were done in the old times in the land of Greece. We are so excited to have this unique and memorable experience!

Spotlight on Handwork

We have had busy hands creating in all Handwork classes this year. I was just remembering teaching the 1st graders how to knit last September and now they have completed knitting butterflies, flute cases, a few rainbow balls and pouches. Gnomes are starting to be set free from their knitting needles in 2nd grade, along with bears and lions. The 3rd grade just learned how to weave on individual looms after spring break and have quickly mastered weaving with stripes and patterns. Our 4th graders are completing their HW bags with some completing cross stitch pin cushions. Hats, socks and mittens are being made by happy hands in 5th grade, with Chaska Gidley taking the extra leap of hand knitting a sweater using the two color knitting technique. Once again our 6th, 7th and 8th graders are completing their semester projects, of elephants, dolls, and pajama pants. The children have learned or deepened their counting and, measuring skills, learned new hand sewing stitches, how to use their eyes to follow design patterns and to read knitted patterns. They are also learning how to go to and develop that place of inner calm and quiet while creating, which I feel is an important skill to deepen in this day and age.

~Ms. Nancy

State Testing

The window for taking our state-wide assessment, the SBAC, is now open. Students in 3rd-8th grade are tested annually in Language Arts and Math, and 5th and 8th graders are tested in Science as well. As per Oregon law, parents and guardians have the right to opt their children out of this assessment. In order to do this, you will need to meet in person with our School Test Coordinator, Ms. Cori, to sign the opt-out form. Please email her to set-up a time to meet if you wish to opt your child out of state testing, cori.royer@madronetrail.org. As a reminder, 3rd, 5th, and 8th graders do not have to take the Spring I-ready assessment so they can focus all of their attention on the SBAC.
