From the Board

Hello Madrone Trail!

As always the board has been hard at work in various ways to help ensure our school thrives. We are happy to report that our budget is looking good and balanced. The school is in good shape as a whole.

We would like to thank and welcome Michelle Coull as our newest board member! Michelle used to teach here and now returns to us in a new capacity. It will be great to have her Waldorf expertise and teaching experience to help guide us. Thanks Michelle for jumping on board.

We have three areas of focus for the board right now. First is the upcoming auction March 8th. We would love to see you all there so buy your tickets ASAP! Secondly, we are continuing to work on strategic planning for the long term future of the school. Third, we are taking a look at our discipline policy and reviewing to ensure clarity and best practices. This will be led by a a committee comprised of some board members, administration, and some faculty.

As always, we would love to hear from you if you have any questions or concerns. Reach out through email at board@madronetrail.org.

For the good of the school,

From the Farm-to School Committee

Sign-ups for our spring plant start and seed drive are now live! We have quite a wish list and hope some families will be able to grow some starts to support the gardening and kitchen program as you plan your own gardens. We are also gathering seeds (if you have some extra that you would like to donate that are not on the wish list, we will gladly accept them). Find our wishlist and sign up here! Thank you in advance! Extra starts will be offered for sale at our May Faire booth.

Cold season plants can be dropped off starting in early April and warm season plants in early May (please leave them on the center table in the greenhouse).

We are still looking to bolster our farm-to-school committee ranks so we can tackle upcoming projects! Our next meeting is March 11 at 3:30 pm in Ms. Nancy’s classroom. If you are unable to attend but are still interested in joining the cause, please email Chef Evan.

Meet our Track Coach

This is my third year coaching middle school boys basketball and track & field at Madrone Trail. For the last four years, I have also been the Assistant Coach at Logos Public Charter for the high school trap shooting team. I graduated high school in Montana, where I played numerous sports...basketball, football, track, and hockey. I also placed in weight lifting competition, a 1st place in deadlift and 1st place in squat and held the class C school state record for squat, lightweight division for many years. I competed in extemporaneous speaking for BPOA both my junior and senior years. Junior year, I achieved 1st place districts, 2nd place state and placed 13th at the national BPOA event. Senior year I again achieved 1st place districts and state for BPOA. I was in band all through junior high and high school. I held two superior ratings as a timpanist and received scholarships for music.

I moved to Oregon in 1998 to be with my family. I met and married my wife Lydia soon after and we have two awesome boys. This is our 13th year as a Madrone Trail family. Our oldest attended Madrone Trail K-8th and is graduating high school this year. Our youngest is graduating 8th grade from Madrone this year. For over 20 years, I ran a successful construction business in the Rogue Valley, specializing in paint and drywall. We enjoy the outdoors as a family, with many days spent fishing, hunting, swimming and scuba diving.

I look forward to coaching this Spring's Track & Field team and boys basketball again next winter!

-Tim Stewart

Spotlight on 1st grade

It has been an exciting few months in the Ladybug classroom. We have been continuing to pull our letters and sounds from our class story. Our story started the second week of school and has been following the tale of three adventurous gnomes who are on a long and magical journey to fix little gnomes’ baskets and to return spring to the island of fire and ice. We are almost done with our alphabet and have begun forming our starting words and sentences.  We have also been moving through our four processes: Miss Minus, Positive Plus, Magician division, and Multiplication Milly. These four friends live together in a big elf house. We have gotten to know them through stories, movement exercises, verses, and working in our main lesson notebooks. So far, we have met all of our processes except for Multiplication Milly, who is still on her journey and will be joining her fact family house soon.

The Ladybugs have been spending a great deal of time working with watercolor (wet-on-wet) and clay. We practice building patience and purpose by warming our clay and getting it ready to work with. We have been creating candles, small bowls, creatures, and more. First grade is a magical time of exploring the world around us and inside us. We have been spending time out by the maze and working in our nature journals (drawing what we notice, leaf tracing) visiting our class oak tree and engaging in songs and class activities that honor the seasons around us and our connection with one another. It has been such a gift to witness the deepening of student’s relationships with each other and to our strong class community. In 1st grade, we are deeply within the world of fairytales, nature, imagination, and connection. I am eager for spring and the discoveries, songs, paintings, characters, nature blocks, and stories that will arrive with it. I am so grateful to be able to learn and grow alongside these incredibly creative, goofy and compassionate people.

Spotlight on Spanish

In 1st-3rd grade we are continuing learning our colors, animals, numbers and simple memorized phrases. We draw in 100% Spanish, and are finishing up our opening verse. Here is a drawing of 2nd grader Delia Cannon's koala bear, "Good morning little animals." In 4th grade we are learning infinitive verbs, activities and adjectives to describe family and friends. Click here to hear 4th grader Charlie Town describing his family.
