From the Board

Hello Madrone Trail Community,

We are happy to share that our budget committee’s diligent efforts over the last 2 years has paid off and resulted in our school operating within its budget throughout this year.  Operating over budget has been problematic and a sticking point in the past with the Medford School District. Therefore, our new success bodes well for the financial security of our school as well as our relationship with the district.

The big news is that at our May 9th meeting we elected a new Board President. Congratulations and thank you to Kelly Ruse for stepping up into this demanding leadership position. With deep appreciation, respect and affinity, we bid adieu to former board member and Board President for the last year Kelly Stofflet who resigned as president to focus on family and other aspects of life. We are so grateful to her for her devotion, professionalism and proficiency during her time with the board and particularly as president. Our board now sits at six members, including Jo Ferneau as Vice President, Justin Botilier as Treasurer, Mark Combs as Interim Secretary, Billy Hague and Eric Cerecedes. We are actively looking for community members who are willing and able to dedicate time and energy to our school to fortify the resilience of our board. If you or anyone you know might be interested, please have them reach out to us at board@madronetrail.org. We are particularly interested in folk with experience with legal teams, fundraising, or non-profit management.

As always, feel free to share ideas and visions for our school with any of us. We look forward to continuing to serve this community throughout the rest of the year and for years to come.

For the good of the school,

Madrone Trail School Board

From the Director

Greetings Madrone Trail Families,

I would like to extend a huge ‘thank you’ to everyone who attended May Faire last week, despite the presence of the notorious Oregon spring weather. It meant a lot to the children that the adults sacrificed comfort and modeled resilience so that the event could continue. We appreciated all the parents and volunteers who braved the cold and rain so that we could welcome the spring with tradition and ceremony. While the event was successful, we will likely have a weather contingency plan in the future.

I’d also like to thank outgoing Board President Kelly Stofflet for her term of service. As most of you know, she has been an extremely valuable part of the leadership team, assisting Madrone Trail through many transitions. Her presence on the board will be missed, and I am confident she will continue to be a visible part of our school community. Congratulations to the newly elected Board officers as well.

I know everyone is eager to know about the changes in our faculty heading into next year. The hiring committee has been very active and intentional with our process. We hope to have information to share with everyone soon. We will also be posting part time positions in gardening and woodwork sometime next week. If you happen to know anyone who might be interested, please share any recommendations.

As always, if you ever have any questions or concerns, or would just like to say hello, please call or stop by any time.

With gratitude,

Andy Bracco

Kitchen Update

We have a new Salad Bar!

Thanks to the Healthy Meals Incentive grant we received last August, we have been able to purchase a new, refrigerated salad bar that is about twice the size of our old salad bar. It will be operational soon and we will be offering the following items daily:

Green leaf lettuce, fresh spinach, tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers, beets*, peas, corn salad w/ tomatoes, onions and cilantro, housemade 3-bean salad*, garbanzo beans*, housemade pico de gallo*, spring or yellow onions, pickled red onions, a featured fresh veggie (like bell peppers or shredded red cabbage), a featured pickled or fermented veggie, and a variety of low-fat dressings. *housemade, not canned

We’re excited to expand access to fresh veggies as well as introduce our students to new items to sample!

RSVP Now for a Taste Testing Event on May 31st

Join us for an exciting taste testing event and nutrition Q&A session for students, parents and faculty on Friday, May 31st starting at 3:15 pm! Chef Evan and friends will be sampling recipe ideas and accepting feedback for next fall’s menu, followed by a Q&A session to share information about the nutrition requirements we follow, address frequently asked questions, and provide the opportunity for a community discussion about our meal program.

Samples will range the dietary spectrum and include some gluten-free and vegan options. The tasting menu will be announced in next week’s Friday Update. RSVPs are necessary so we can prepare an appropriate number of samples. Click here to RSVP. We hope to see you there!

Olympiad a Success!

The Sunflower Class spent a very warm day at Clay Street Park next to Siskiyou School at the annual 5th grade Olympiad. There they met and joined in city-states with students from Siskiyou School and Woodland Charter School. The 5th graders worked hard all year in Games class learning to throw discus and javelin, jump and run with beauty, and ring wrestle (which is more like dancing than the name implies.) They were each given a medal for their hard work and got to have a taste of what it's like to be an Olympian. It was a day to remember for all.

State Testing

The window for taking our state-wide assessment, the SBAC, is now open. Students in 3rd-8th grade are tested annually in Language Arts and Math, and 5th and 8th graders are tested in Science as well. As per Oregon law, parents and guardians have the right to opt their children out of this assessment. In order to do this, you will need to meet in person with our School Test Coordinator, Ms. Cori, to sign the opt-out form.

Ms. Cori will be gone the week of May 13-16, so please contact Mr. Bracco, andy.bracco@madronetrail.org, next week instead.
