Civil Rights

Sorry for the late delivery of the Friday Update, I was at a Civil Rights training for Charter School administrators in Salem all day yesterday. It was very informative and I can't wait to bring what I learned back to the faculty and then pass it on to the students.

As a very brief overview, the five federal civil rights laws that apply to education are:
Title VI,  Title IX,  Section 504,  ADA, and  Guidelines for Vocational Education.  All of these laws aim to stop discrimination based on a person's sex, race, color, religion, national origin, disability, sexual orientation (including gender identity), age, or marital/familial status. This type of discrimination can manifest in many ways, and schools are mandated to identify, prevent, educate, and create grievance procedures for students who feel they have been discriminated against based on one of the above named protected classes.

This will be a work in progress, and I will update periodically about where we are in the process. Every school is mandated to have a Title IX coordinator as well as a 504 coordinator. Charter school administrators tend to wear many hats, so I will be the designated person to go to for anything civil rights related. Contact me if you have any questions.

Parking Lot Etiquette

Please observe the following guidelines in the parking lot at drop off and pick up time:

  • SLOW DOWN. We have had many complaints of people whizzing through our parking lot. There have been some near misses with students, yikes!
  • NO CELL PHONES. It is Oregon Law that driving while holding your phone or texting is illegal. The same goes for our lot.
  • OBSERVE THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC. Always travel counter-clockwise through the lot. Pull close to the fence for the drop off lane, so others can pass who are going to park.
  • USE CROSSWALK. It's very hard to see, which should be remedied soon, but please only cross through the parking lot by the first gate.
  • REMEMBER, WE ARE FOLLOWING THESE GUIDELINES FOR THE SAFETY OF ALL OUR STUDENTS AND FAMILIES.
We are currently working on getting our parking lot recoated and painted, so it will be easier to see what and where to go, but until then we appreciate your cooperation in keeping our parking lot safe.

Meet Ms. Wendy

I was born in Southern California and in my early childhood my family moved to the Rogue Valley. I graduated from Grants Pass High School. I earned my Associates Degree and worked at Rogue Community College for 21 years. My background is in office admin, Human Resources, payroll, and accounting.

In 2013, my husband and I moved to Hawaii where we spent the last 5 years enjoying the beauty of Oahu. We recently moved back to the Rogue Valley and are looking forward to being a part the community again. I'm excited to be part of the Madrone Trail family!

Use of Cell Phones On Campus

The Use of Personal Electronic Devices guidelines went home recently. It spells out exactly what our expectations are, but the basic rule for students is no cell phone use at school. We discourage students even bringing their personal electronic devices to school, and to only do so when necessary.

To help support this we would love to see parents limit their use of cell phones when on campus. Students really do look to us as models for behavior, and when they see us with phones constantly in our hands using them just to kill time, as opposed to answering an important call/text/or e-mail, then we unconsciously model behavior we are asking them not to do on campus. While waiting for your child outside a classroom, we encourage you to chat with your fellow class parents, and build connections that promote community at our school.

Thank you for your support in this.

Quote of the Day

"A healthy social life is found only, when in the mirror of each soul the whole community finds its reflection, and when in the whole community the virtue of each one is living."
