Parent Square

We have many families still needing to register their account! We highly recommend all parents/guardians download the app to receive important news from the school. Parents can opt to get their news via email, text, or app notification. We will use this platform to quickly notify families about school closures due to snow amongst other things. The Friday Update itself will be sent via Parent Square starting next week. We are very excited about streamlining communication to and from school and families. If you are having difficulties logging in email Ms. Cori, cori.royer@madronetrail.org

From the Parent Council

Thank you to the 25 parents, faculty, and administration who showed up for the first Parent Council meeting. What an amazing turnout!

We individually answered the question "what are your hopes for this school year?" and the resounding answer was community and connection. If you'd like to join our community of parents please sign up here and attend our next meeting on October 6th at 6pm in the 4th grade classroom. The more the merrier, we can't wait to see you there!

From the Auction Committee- First Meeting Next Week!

From the Volunteer Coordinator

Hello wonderful Madrone families!

I am very excited to be seeing so many families turning in their applications for background checks these past few weeks. Thank you so much to everyone who has taken the time to do that. If you are curious to see if your background check has been approved or expired, send me an email and I can check that information for you! If you still need to turn your application in, click this link and fill it out today! It only takes a few minutes to get it done. Field trips are on the horizon and it's a good idea to get your application complete if you want to be a chaperone!

As always, we have needs for volunteers! Check out the list below to see where you can help:

  • The Kitchen needs help everyday from 1:15pm-3:15pm
  • Handwork volunteers are needed on Wednesdays and Fridays from 11:45am-12:30pm to help the 3rd graders with crochet. If you can do the chain stitch and single crochet stitch, this is a great volunteer opportunity for you!
  • The Library also needs help organizing books! If you prefer to volunteer in a quiet space, our wonderful library would be the place for you!
  • Stewardship Day is THIS SATURDAY 9/27 from 9am-1pm. This will be a day full of maintenance, landscaping, and gardening! Childcare is provided.

Don't forget to be logging your volunteer hours! Here is a link that takes you to the Help Counter website to easily log those hours.

From the Kitchen

Kitchen Volunteer Shifts

A huge thank you to our recent kitchen volunteers: Xochitl, Billy, Sophia, and Austin! When we asked for help, we didn’t anticipate the new friendships that would come with it. Not only has your support lightened the workload, but your energy and encouragement have lifted our whole crew. We are so grateful—thank you!

We’re Hiring!

The Dragon Café is looking for a kitchen assistant/dishwasher to join our team from 11:00–3:00 each school day. Don’t worry—no one is leaving! Our program has simply grown, and we need an extra set of hands. No cooking experience is required, but being dependable and able to keep up in a busy kitchen is a must. You can find all the details here. Referrals are also greatly appreciated!

Soup Special Next Week

Chef Clinton may have just created the best idea since sliced bread—meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and gravy turned into soup! It might sound unusual, but we promise it’s delicious. This special will be available next week while supplies last. We’re pretty sure your kids will be asking for seconds! Have a lovely weekend!

Looking Towards Halloween

We will be celebrating Halloween at school on Friday, October 31. At Madrone Trail, this means we will have a parade of costumes after lunch and then individual class celebrations afterwards. Please do not send your child in their costume to school, or apply elaborate makeup they will have to wear all day as it is very distracting for the first part of the day.

As you look to purchase or make your child's Halloween costume this year please observe our school guidelines surrounding the Halloween costumes that they wear at school. If students would like to dress up in something that is outside these guidelines, we encourage them to do that on Halloween night instead of at school.

  • Bring your costume to change into before the parade. Parade will be at 1:30 pm on the track.
  • Homemade costumes are encouraged.
  • Costumes must follow the school dress code.
  • Keep face paint, make-up, and hair simple (you’re going to be applying it all at school.)
  • You must be able to sit, walk, hear, and see with your costume on (face masks can only be worn during the parade)
  • No costumes that are gory/scary.
  • No prop weapons.

Insight into Waldorf Education

We are continuing our monthly series of informational articles about Waldorf Education. Look for them the last Friday of the month.

This week's article:

Cooperative Play in Waldorf Education: Why We Delay Ball Games in the Early Grades

In Waldorf education, the timing of introducing balls (especially organized ball games) is connected to child development, not to ability or fun. Here’s the reasoning:

1. Developmental Readiness

  • Waldorf teachers see the first seven years (birth–age 7) as a time for developing balance, coordination, rhythm, and spatial awareness through whole-body play: climbing, running, skipping, jumping, tumbling, etc.
  • Before about third grade (around age 9), many children are still mastering their midline crossing (using both sides of the body together) and their sense of orientation in space. Ball games require tracking, quick reaction, and precise aim — which Waldorf considers premature stress if introduced too early.
