Dear Parents-
Thank you for your partnership in all we hope to accomplish. For our in-person families, thank you for your patience with carpool, having waivers ready and making sure your children had masks! I can’t tell you how great it is to have the kids back, and keeping them safe is now our greatest mission! For the distance families, thank you for your patience and feedback as we work on the technology, and thank you for making sure your children are connected and engaged! We hope and pray for the day we are all together again.
Saturday we celebrate First Holy Communion with our current 3rd grade students. These boys and girls have been waiting for this special day since May. Please keep these amazingly resilient children in your prayers, and join us by live-stream on the St. Joseph Catholic Church Facebook page. Mass is at 10:00AM.
SCANTRON testing starts Monday for in-person students in grades 3-7. There are a few glitches in the Scantron program that prevent Distance Learning students from taking the test at this time. The Office of Catholic Schools is working closely with Scantron to fix the glitch as soon as possible. There is no way to protect the integrity of the test while students take the test at home, but the work-around is in progress. Updates will be provided as they become available. DL students are expected in class and will complete activities as assigned by their teachers.
Mrs. Hatley shares the following information:
Having the small sessions of Distance Learners each day helped us to test out the system and give the DL students one on one time with their teachers to establish expectations and protocols. From the sessions, teachers learned about video quality, lesson modifications and so much more. One thing affecting all sessions is internet speed which is an integral part of distance learning. Slow internet speed can cause blurry pictures, slow connection, and video delays. At SJS, our streaming set up in the classroom includes a Chromebook, HD camera, microphone, and ActivPanel. We are continually adjusting these components to make it a better experience. Our level of internet has been increased to enable the streaming on multiple devices. If your family is distance learning, consider trying this internet test. It will indicate your home internet speed and its capability of running multiple devices, etc. We are working hard to make the distance learning experience the same high-quality experience as in-person learning at SJS has always been.
Just a reminder that Monday will be the first day that we have all in-person students in the building. Please be patient with the carpool, particularly in the afternoon where we anticipate about 20 minutes to dismiss all students while following social distance requirements. We will get better (faster) as everyone becomes more accustomed to the new rules and procedures. Feel free to stand outside your car, or stand on the runner so that you are more easily seen by your child.

Extra special shout out this week to the facility team, who are working all day long wiping down surfaces, door knobs and other high-touch areas. I can’t count the number of steps Mr. Walter and Mr. Kenny take each day to keep everyone safe!
Please let me know if you have any questions.
