Dear Parents and Guardians,
I hope this message finds you well and that your child's school year at St. Joseph Catholic School is off to a great start. At St. Joseph Catholic School, we are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of our students, both on campus and online. To support this commitment, I am pleased to introduce the GoGuardian Parent App, a powerful tool designed to help you monitor and guide your child's online activities.
What is GoGuardian?
GoGuardian is a comprehensive online safety tool that we use at school to filter and monitor students' internet activity. While at school, GoGuardian blocks access to distracting or inappropriate sites such as Facebook, TikTok, and gaming websites, allowing students to stay focused on their studies. When students are at home, GoGuardian switches to a home mode, which allows them more access to various sites, except for inappropriate adult content.
Home Monitoring and Parental Responsibility
When your child is at home, it is important to note that the responsibility for monitoring their online activity rests with you, as parents. The school does not actively monitor your child's activity during home hours. However, if GoGuardian detects any concerning behavior, such as access to explicit content or potential signs of harm, an alert may be generated. Please be aware that it may take a couple of days for you to receive a report, especially if the alert occurs over the weekend.
Understanding the GoGuardian Parent App
The GoGuardian Parent App is a valuable resource that empowers you to oversee and guide your child's online activities during non-school hours. With this app, you can stay informed about your child's digital interactions and help ensure that their online experiences are safe and constructive.
GoGuardian In/Out of School Policies
- During School Hours: Our primary policy during school hours blocks access to games and websites that do not serve an academic purpose. This ensures that students remain engaged in their educational activities while on campus.
- After-School Hours: When school is out, the filter switches to home mode. GoGuardian will continue to block access to inappropriate adult content, but students will be able to access sites like Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok. Through the GoGuardian Parent App, you have the ability to create your own filters and set additional restrictions to further customize your child's online experience.
Your Role as a Parent or Guardian
Your active involvement in monitoring your child's online behavior during non-school hours is crucial. The GoGuardian Parent App is an excellent tool to assist you in this effort, ensuring that your child navigates the online world safely and responsibly.
To register for the GoGuardian Parent App, please follow this link: GoGuardian Parent App Registration. This link provides additional information about the app and includes a form to sign up for access. If you require any assistance or have questions about the app, our IT support team is here to help. You can reach them at sjhelpdesk@sjschoolva.org.

Our service to the community teaches students the importance of making service a lifelong practice, to become better citizens and to live out their faith. St. Joseph Catholic School has partnered with Catholic Charities St. Lucy Food Project to conduct service projects throughout the year and assist families experiencing food insecurity.
The September boxed cereal collection will start on September 9 and end on September 17.

To begin a Healthy New Year, St. Joseph Catholic School will again be adopting the 9-5-2-1-0 wellness
plan. It is a plan to promote healthy lifestyles for our children. Our goal is to support our parents as they work to encourage healthy behaviors for their children.
The mnemonic for 9-5-2-1-0 stands for:
9 Get at least 9 hours of sleep per day
5 Eat 5 servings of fruits and vegetables per day
2 Limit screen time to no more than 2 hours per day
1 Get at least one hour of physical activity per day
0 Avoid beverages with added sugar
We will dedicate each month to a different component of the program. Starting in October, we will focus on getting 9 hours of sleep each night.

PLEASE READ!!!
Important reminders from the school nurse to Parents/Guardian for the 2024-2025
As we begin the New Year 2024-2025, please re-read this document as a guide to help reduce the spread of illness in our homes and our school community
This is the time of the year when we expect to see an increase in the number of respiratory illnesses in our community, including coughs, colds, sore throats, COVID-19, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and influenza (“flu”) to name a few. While these illnesses are not unusual for this time of year, there are several things that you can do to protect your child and others.

Trinity House - Building a Faith Filled Home | |
All families are invited to participate in a new ministry at our parish developed by Trinity House Community in Leesburg. Its mission is to inspire families to make home a taste of heaven for the renewal of faith and culture. The ministry model is based on the teaching that the family is a communion of persons in the image of the Holy Trinity. Detailed information is available at Home - Trinity House Community Click HERE for more information!
A series of free family workshops will be held in the parish hall on Saturday evenings. The first one is on September 28th after 5:00 Mass. It starts with parents and kids having a simple meal together (e.g., pizza and salads). From 6:45 to 7:30 parents watch a short presentation on one aspect of faith formation in the home, followed by small group discussions, while kids are kept occupied and supervised by Virtus-trained volunteers. At 7:30 all gather for fellowship and dessert. Attendees may bring a side dish, drink, or dessert to share. Please contact Len Grus if you would like to attend or volunteer (lengrus@verizon.net or 703-300-7297).
