Vision and Hearing Health Screenings

It is time for the annual vision and hearing health screenings. The diocese recommends that students in grades K (who were not screened at their annual health physical), 3 & 7 for elementary school, be screened for sight and hearing deficiencies.

However, any child from any grade who is having difficulty in class and has been recommended to be screened by their teacher should contact Ms. Settelmaier @ k.settelmaier@sjschoolva.org to request a consent form for you to complete.

Please complete the consent forms that will come home with your child on October 1 and return to their classroom teacher by Tuesday, October 8, 2024 in order for your child to be screened. The screening will be conducted on Wednesday, October 16, 2024 at 0900.

Log Volunteer Hours!

St. Joseph Catholic School has implemented a 12-hour family service requirement. All families are encouraged to participate, and many opportunities exist to volunteer time, talent, or treasure, including class field trips, parties or other classroom help, cafeteria, recess and hands-on activities such as art or outdoor classroom activities. The PTO also has numerous opportunities such as the auction, Donut Sundays, etc. All volunteers must complete the Child Protection Program if they will have substantial contact with students. Families that do not participate in the service program will be charged a $120.00 fee, or partial fee of $10 per hour for hours not volunteered.

Nurse's Corner

To begin a Healthy New Year, St. Joseph Catholic School will again be adopting the 9-5-2-1-0 wellness

plan. It is a plan to promote healthy lifestyles for our children. Our goal is to support our parents as they work to encourage healthy behaviors for their children.

The mnemonic for 9-5-2-1-0 stands for:

9 Get at least 9 hours of sleep per day

5 Eat 5 servings of fruits and vegetables per day

2 Limit screen time to no more than 2 hours per day

1 Get at least one hour of physical activity per day

0 Avoid beverages with added sugar

We will dedicate each month to a different component of the program. Starting in October, we will focus on getting 9 hours of sleep each night.

What Is Pneumonia?

Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs. Normally, the small sacs in the lungs are filled with air. In someone diagnosed with pneumonia, the air sacs fill up with pus and other fluid.

In general, pneumonia is not contagious, but the respiratory viruses and bacteria that lead to it are. Therefore, it is important that you keep your child home and take them to the doctor for an evaluation if they are suffering from fever and cold symptoms with prolonged coughing that has lasted >10 days, is getting worse and not improving.

Trinity House - Building a Faith Filled Home

All families are invited to participate in a new ministry at our parish developed by Trinity House Community in Leesburg. Its mission is to inspire families to make home a taste of heaven for the renewal of faith and culture. The ministry model is based on the teaching that the family is a communion of persons in the image of the Holy Trinity.  Detailed information is available at Home - Trinity House Community  Click HERE for more information!

A series of free family workshops will be held in the parish hall on Saturday evenings. The first one is on September 28th after 5:00 Mass. It starts with parents and kids having a simple meal together (e.g., pizza and salads). From 6:45 to 7:30 parents watch a short presentation on one aspect of faith formation in the home, followed by small group discussions, while kids are kept occupied and supervised by Virtus-trained volunteers. At 7:30 all gather for fellowship and dessert. Attendees may bring a side dish, drink, or dessert to share. Please contact Len Grus if you would like to attend or volunteer (lengrus@verizon.net or 703-300-7297).
