For 60 of 75 years the Joyner family has called Livonia home

A Full House turned our hometown into a rousing HockeyTown Livonia

Red Wings took time after the game to sign hats, programs, and shirts for young hockey fans, in this case John Ogrodnick, a Five Time All Star, top, and WWE wrestler Jay Adams who enjoys skating with the Red Wings.

A number of city officials were on hand including Council Woman Martha Ptashnik, Fire Chief Robert Jennison, pictured here, as well as Judge Jim Jolly and Treasurer Susan Nash.

Brandon McCullough, founder of the Hockey Game for Charity, and Rob Donovic skated for the All-stars.

Haitham Fakhouri said "It was such a fun experience hanging out in the announcer's booth with Friday Musings at the charity hockey game today. Who's coming with me next year?"

What a Fun Day for Young and Old. Full of Smiles, laughter, and Charity.

This typewriter was so excited to once again be announcing the 4th Annual Brandon McCullough Hockey Game for Charity featuring the Detroit Red Wings versus the Livonia All-Stars that I arrived at the Eddie Edgar Ice Arena at 8:45 for the 11:00 puck drop.

It was not long before the Rotary AM and Rotary Noon volunteers started arriving to help set up to welcome fans to the game and collect canned food for Livonia food pantries.

Wayne Kinney was there to help set up the microphone system so Haitham Fakhouri, the new announcer in training, Kacee McCullough, and the typewriter could be easily heard.

By 10 there were at least 20 volunteers on hand and by the start at 11 over 30 had set up their stations.

But what put the biggest smile on this face was that over 700 were in the arena ready to show their support for Hockeytown Livonia.

Mayor Maureen Miller Brosnan proclaimed that "It was a sellout! The 4th Annual McCullough Charity Hockey Game was the place to be today."

She was happy to meet up with hockey legend Red Berenson and "was honored to drop the puck with Miss Wayne County 2024 Mikaela Bannon and my personal favorite Miss Livonia, Harper McCullough."

The game was fun, although once again the Red Wing All-Stars came out on top.

But hey, with six Stanley Cup Champions, Drew Miller, Darren McCarty, Joe Kocur, Larry Murphy, Red Berenson and Mickey Redmond on hand, coached by Nick Libett, Dennis Hextall and Phil Myre on hand what would anyone expect.

Add to that Jay Adams formerly with the WWE, pictured here with Veronica Cruz, Director of the Breaking Barriers Kids and Famlies, and you get the picture.

Livonia-based Pucks for Autism sent a jersey into the Red Wing locker room and had players on hand for the game add their autographs. The Jersey was auctioned off and raised $1000 for this non-profit organization which raises funds and awareness for children and adults with autism. Just another way that this Hockey Game for Charity reaches out into the community.

This family that won the auction smiled all the way out to their car.

The day was a success. Livonia turned out in large numbers, the Red Wings brought their "A" team, and Breaking Barriers Kids and Families raised funding for many projects.

Thank you Livonia and thank you Brandon McCullough. $50,000 in 4 years. What a hometown we live in.

Join Us in Easing the Ulaszek Family's Burden on the passing of Mike Ulaszek

At the PTSA Chili Cook-Off last week, I had the pleasure of meeting and chatting with Mike Ulaszek and his daughter, even snapping a picture to share with our readers.

Unfortunately, it was the only time I would get to speak with Mike, as he passed away unexpectedly four days later from a heart attack.

Many in the community are familiar with the dedication and hard work of his wife, Laura. She has been instrumental in defining volunteerism and supports numerous organizations. Laura is the Executive Director of the LPS Education Foundation and a member of the Livonia PTSA Council. She also previously managed social media at Rosedale Gardens Presbyterian Church.

FridayMusings has been asked to share this GoFundMe account to assist the family with their funeral expenses. Any contribution, no matter how small, will be deeply appreciated and will go directly towards alleviating the financial burden on his loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. Your support, both emotional and financial, means more than words can express as our community comes together to honor and remember Mike.

At this moment, the family is still finalizing plans for services. We will provide updates as soon as they are confirmed.
