Connecting Our Dismas Fellowship Communities

What Do We Need to Start New Dismas Groups?

The goal of Dismas Fellowship is to offer support and community for those who have experienced incarceration. Yet, our ability to do that depends largely on the number and quality of people willing to volunteer in the formation of a Dismas group. Before any Dismas Fellowship can be formed, the number one necessity is a strong group of dedicated volunteers! There doesn't have to be many, but these individuals need to be committed and organized.

Once it is established that a city or town might be a good location for a new Dismas, it is essential to have people who can credibly that group. This means forming good relations with Probation and Parole Offices. This means connecting with churches and other groups that might be interested in supporting the work. This means setting up a Steering Committee so that one or two people don't "burn out" trying to do it all.

It is unfortunate that we have some regions with former inmates who are asking for a local Dismas, but we do not yet have the capacity to begin. I am sometimes asked, "Why can't we start a Dismas in this city?" My answer is "We can! But we have to have a core group of faithful volunteers who are willing to be trained to do the work." Perhaps someone reading this might reach out and begin to coordinate with friends and faith groups to lay the foundation for a Dismas in your region. Let me know if I can help you "get off the ground!" Dismas is growing, but there is still so much more that we could do!

Dismas Brampton... in Africa?

Eileen Henderson shared this from Rwanda...

The legacy of Brampton Dismas lives on in the lives of Christophe and Byamungo, two community chaplains in Goma, DR Congo.

We have had 19 folks from Goma with us for the past 3 days, all have experienced trauma the past few months as war has raged in their city. The opportunity to eat and sleep as well as to get to choose some new clothes has offered a small respite in the midst of incredible turmoil and insecurity.

Some Reports from Dismas Groups

Brockville

Eric Richards reports that numbers were down because of illnesses, but everyone had a great time on March 10. Yvonne and Lazlo brought lasagna, homemade buns and salad and Jenny and Kay brought desserts. The reflection that Eric shared was "Random Words of Kindness."

Cambridge Meets on St. Patrick's Day!

On St. Patrick's Day, Dismas Fellowship Cambridge had a grand time of celebrating with Irish Stew and rolls, and other fixins', and lots of desserts!  Paul shared some history about St. Patrick and his vision to return to Ireland as a missionary to those who had formerly enslaved him. There was a lot of sharing as the question was posed "What group of people do you have a burden/ passion for?" Many folks were close to tears as they talked about their love and concern for the incarcerated, people with mental illness, seniors, abuse victims etc.

Grateful Guelph Gathering on Ash Wednesday

Guelph had a better attendance than last month with one first time guest. Grant (with Nancy) made his famous bbq pulled pork with fries. Lynn made a great cole slaw. We celebrated 2 birthdays with Dairy Queen ice cream cake! Paul brought a reflection on the topic of "Giving Things Up for the RIght Reasons" since it was Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent.

Hamilton Has a Huge Gathering!

Dismas Hamilton had one of their largest turnouts ever on March 21! Thanks to Jeff and the Kitchen Crew for a great Chicken Parm dinner.

Great fellowship! Great singing! Great reflection from our student placement, Hannah!

Who's in the Kitchen in Kitchener?

Dismas KW met again on March 14 with the best attendance yet and 2 first time guests at Stirling Mennonite Church. William has taken on the role as "resident chef" and cooked a tremendous meal of Ham, scalloped potatoes and green beans while others brought salads and desserts. Lynda is our song leader and accompanies our singing with an instrument called an "Omnichord." Chris brought an excellent reflection about "Saying Yes to Life."

Dismas Niagara Is Now Meeting!

Dismas Niagara had their first official meeting on March 24 with 22 in attendance! The group enjoyed lots of pizza, salad and a huge selection of homemade desserts. Bill was emcee. Singing was led by Elvera and Paul brought a short presentation: "Dismas, Its Past and Purpose." In the Circle, nobody passed! Everyone wanted to share how they felt about Dismas and how they would like to be involved.

Toronto: Time of Reflection & Connection...

Carina Tran shares... On March 21, Dismas Fellowship Toronto gathered for a night of connection, reflection, and support. Kevin and others treated us to a delicious lasagna dinner with salad and desserts, filling both our plates and our hearts.

We prayed for Harry’s full recovery, sending him strength and love, and thanking God for his courage and great impact in starting Dismas Fellowship Toronto 22 years ago.

Reflecting on times of feeling lost and how we’ve found our way again, we shared stories, built companionship, and connected with new and familiar faces. We closed the night in a prayer circle, reminded of the strength found in community and faith.

LOOKING AHEAD...

Things are Looking Good for a Second Toronto Dismas!

On April 9, interested parties will be meeting to discuss moving forward with a second Dismas in Toronto. This Dismas would be on the west side of the City (Etobicoke area) while the original Dismas Toronto will continue meeting on the east side.
