Webb

Syndrome

This is a condition which afflicts the San Francisco Giants. It arises when Logan Webb pitches. Symptoms include the inability of the Giants to score more than two runs when Webb is the starter. Management claims to be involved in research to alleviate the pain and stress caused by the Webb Syndrome, but no report of progress has been made public. Fans want results! After all, Webb struck out 12 and had no walks in six innings in the G-Men's 2-0 loss 2-0 Friday to the Los Angeles Angels.

If it takes TORPEDO BATS, so be it. Logan is a class act and deserves an offense which matches his superior work on the mound!

Houston a Unifier?

Stephen Curry is the Crown Prince of Basketball,

if not The King...

The Warriors

Must Catch

Fire Or Else

by Dave Newhouse

The Warriors didn’t exactly power their way into the NBA playoffs, losing two out of three games at the end of the regular season before squeezing out a win over Memphis to keep their season alive.

Their first postseason challenger, the Houston Rockets, have home court advantage in the scheduled seven-game series, which began yesterday. Houston is seeded No. 2 among the eight Western Conference qualifiers, while the Warriors are No. 7, an unenviable position.

Thus will it be a quick disappearance or a humongous upset for the Warriors? They are capable of either outcome as they're still seeking to find themselves this late in the season.

Coach Steve Kerr has changed starting lineups 38 times plus player rotations all season long, though Jimmy Butler’s acquisition slowed that process. Without Butler, there would be no postseason for the Warriors.

The Warriors’ starters of late are shorter in size than during the first half of the season, as Kerr has opted for rapid shooting and full-court speed as his main offensive strategy. Even Draymond Green is dribbling the ball faster than most NBA guards to try and wear down opponents, which has been hit and miss all season.

Golden State doesn’t have a dominant big man to bring about low-post scoring, which is Kerr’s key problem offensively. Thus his team either fires off long shots with regularity or passes the ball madly in circles to spring somebody free near the basket.

The Warriors were the NBA’s worst free throw shooters

until Butler arrived...

This strategy works sometimes, but doesn’t work other times, because the Warriors turn the ball over too much, resulting in many late-game collapses. Stephen Curry is the Crown Prince of Basketball, if not The King, but he had eight turnovers in one of those two failed playoff misses before he darn near qualified the team by himself, with a huge assist, of course, from Butler.

For the Warriors to get past the Rockets, they must continue their Playoff Jimmy philosophy of getting to the free throw line more than their opponents. The Warriors were the NBA’s worst free throw shooters until Butler arrived, and now they’re in the top five because of his frequency at the charity stripe. That’s what Butler has brought this team: Charity instead of a doomsday outcome.

The Rockets are seeded second for a reason. They have a big man in the pivot, 6-foot-11 Alperen Sengun, who’s averaging 19.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and 4.9 assists this season. How the pivot-less Warriors defend him is anyone’s guess?

Houston is one of the NBA’s most athletic teams, deep in depth and defense-minded. They know that by making Curry and Butler less heroic through pressuring double-team tactics is the very method by which to advance.

This means other Warriors have to step up to counter-attack Houston’s focus on Curry and Butler, but who will those Warriors be? Buddy Hield must be at his best, but his outside shooting is hot and cold. Gary Payton II is a tremendous all-around player with hops, but his carrying the Warriors is unlikely. Green gives the Warriors everything he has, though you can’t expect him to dominate. However, Brandin Poziemski’s offensive and defensive skills, absorbing charges like an NFL linebacker, could have a profound effect on the series.

So how do the Warriors pull off a major surprise against the Rockets? Moses Moody, are you listening? He could be a huge factor if he keeps swishing jumpers. I’m not sure what Kerr’s plan are for Jonathan Kuminga, who ended the regular season on the bench. But he can light a fire quickly with his athleticism. Quite frankly, the Warriors have no chance unless he plays and prospers.

Quinten Post, Gui Santos and Kevon Looney could provide some lift off the bench. However, to eliminate Houston, it will take a full complement of Warriors to see if they are, finally, a together team instead of a bunch of individuals who lack that vital ingredient.

The Masters and the

Ryder Cup

 ATTN: American Golfers -- It's

Tee Time, not Teatime!

by Robert Moselle, Esq.

We know, it was a dramatic Master's Tournament and we've all seen Rory FINALLY complete his career Grand Slam -- but he's basically been Americanized by now.

But what about our own American PGA regulars? The Masters Top 10 was dangerously thin on PGA pros. The LIVs? They prefer countries far, far away.

Rory, from Northern Ireland, won and nosed out a BRIT in a Playoff. That's the top two: Then comes Patrick Reed. Oh, the joy! Not exactly a beloved figure among golf fans or fellow pros here or anywhere else, and an EX-PGA. Scottie Scheffler? No trouble with the cops, at least, but he clearly doesn't have his A Game, and he's supposed to be the "face" of USA Golf and the best in the world -- fourth place. Tied for fifth/sixth S.J. Im and Bryson DeChambeau, an American but a non-PGA, so he's not around these parts very often. Next, tied for seventh, Aberg and tied for the remainder slots, Conners, Day, and Americans Xander Schauffele and, (drumroll): "From out of the bullpen, Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome Zach Johnson!" Remember him?

If fans think the last USA Ryder Cup's Real Housewives of Golf show was bad, with demands for money and petty snipes at each other, brace yourselves: if the quality of USA golf doesn't improve, the next could be an even worse horror show.

Perhaps the Black Course in Bethpage can help, as it did when it helped destroy Sergio Garcia as fans loudly counted his endless back swings and he lost his cool along with his golf game. New Yorkers will do their part, but America's Golfers -- HEY SCOTTIE, I'M TALKIN' TO YOU! LOSE THE BEARD! Did Jack Nicklaus or Arnold Palmer ever go full ZZ Top?

USA PGA Golfers: Step up your games or prepare to embarrass the U.S.A.

Looking Back

Mickey Mantle is regarded by many as one of the

best players and sluggers of all time

Mickey Mantle Rookie Card --

The One That

Got Away

by Amaury Pi-Gonzalez

Mickey Mantle is as iconic an American sports figure as there ever was. Mantle played in 20 All-Star games, retired in March of 1969 with 536 home runs, and won seven World Series with his Yankee team. His #7 uniform was the most famous number 7 in history. The #7 was indeed the luckiest number for him.

During a doubleheader at Yankee Stadium in 1969, the year he retired, the Yankees retired his famous #7 uniform. I lived in New York after being discharged from the U.S. Army and attended that game alone. I never forgot that in the middle of that doubleheader, they drove Mantle in a golf cart around the outfield as he waved at fans in a sold-out stadium. I remember it as a sunny, very hot and humid day in the middle of a Bronx summer. Number 7 was wearing a suit, spoke, and got a long ovation from the fans.

Mantle was the best player I ever saw. His power as a switch-hitter is legendary to this day. Mantle could hit a ball from the right side of the plate 450 feet and later in the same game, hit one from the left side of the plate 440 feet. For me, he was The Man.

In 2022 a mint-condition 1952 Mickey Mantle Topps card sold for $12.6 million at an auction in Dallas, Texas. I always dreamed of getting my hands on that card -- for me, that was the One That Got Away, but I'd collected and traded many cards when I was more focused on baseball as a fan, and in New York, I thought everybody was collecting them in the late 1960s.

A mint-condition 1952 Mickey Mantle Topps baseball card

was sold for $12.6 million at a Dallas, Texas auction

on August 28, 2022

I was never lucky to find that famous rookie card. I kept the program from that hot, humid day at Yankee Stadium when they retired his Number 7 in the middle of a doubleheader. It is not worth millions like the rookie card, but for me, it is worth a lot because I was there, and I will take that memory of that day to my grave.

2025 seems like a different world on a different planet, with the internet and people watching a game on their cell phones. It has been generations since baseball cards were "the hobby" for many kids and adults nationwide. Like My Mamá used to tell me, these adults were "the guys that never grew up."

Mickey Mantle was an absolute superstar, idolized by men and women alike. He was the biggest playboy in New York, much bigger than Joe Namath. I had the privilege of meeting him in person, not when he was playing but years later when he and Joe DiMaggio were broadcasting Yankee games for the Yes Network, New York, and during a Yankee series against the A's at the Oakland Coliseum, sometime in the early 1980s.

Early in 1995, doctors discovered that Mantle's liver had been severely damaged by alcohol-induced cirrhosis and hepatitis C, and he had an inoperable liver cancer.

Quote: "If I knew I was going to live this long, I'd have

taken better care of myself" -- Mickey Mantle.

‘Grandson of the Wind’ taking center stage in San Francisco

Anthony Castrovince

@castrovince

The “Grandson of the Wind” is blowing through MLB this season.

Giants center fielder Jung Hoo Lee descends from Korean baseball royalty. His father, Jong Beom Lee, called the “Son of the Wind,” was a Korean Baseball Organization MVP, six-time Golden Glove winner, 13-time All-Star and two-time Korean Series MVP known for the effortless, breezy speed that made him such a formidable leadoff presence.

So by the time Jung Hoo Lee debuted in the KBO at age 18 in 2017, he was already a sensation in Korea. As he lived up to his pedigree, the two Lees became the first father-son duo to lead the league in batting average, to each win MVPs and to garner the most votes for the league’s All-Star Game. And the younger Lee led the KBO in jersey sales from 2019-23.

He was a hero in his homeland.

But when Jung Hoo Lee made the jump to MLB by signing with the Giants prior to the 2024 MLB season, he didn't have the same kind of hype as other international superstars.

How Bleday helped unlock Soderstrom's success at the plate

MILWAUKEE -- During an appearance on MLB Network’s morning show MLB Central earlier this week, Athletics first baseman Tyler Soderstrom revealed a key contributor to his success while discussing the mechanical adjustments that have helped him ascend to the top as MLB’s home run leader so far this season.

“I credit JJ Bleday,” Soderstrom said. “He went foot down early and I kind of [learned] after him and took off.”

Without getting too deep into the weeds of hitting mechanics, getting his “foot down early,” in layman’s terms, was an adjustment to his setup in the batter’s box that involved eliminating his leg kick before swinging and instead getting his foot down earlier, which helps with his timing of pitches and minimizes head movement at the plate.

Earthquakes 3,

Sporting Kansas City 5

San Jose climbs back from early 3-0 deficit but unable to complete second-half resurgence; Quakes go on the road next Saturday against Columbus Crew

SAN JOSE, Calif. — The San Jose Earthquakes fell to Sporting Kansas City 5-3 on Saturday night at PayPal Park in front of 14,147 fans.

Logan Ndenbe struck first for the visitors in the 18th minute when he scored from the left wing off a shared assist by Dejan Joveljic and Daniel Salloi. Three minutes later, Salloi hauled in a long ball from goalkeeper John Pulskamp and slotted it home to double SKC’s advantage. In the 24th minute, Shapi Suleymanov found Manu García in the box, who promptly finished the through ball to make it 3-0.

San Jose pulled one back in the 30th minute when defender Rodrigues dribbled deep into the attacking third and his through ball from the right wing was finished by a streaking Josef Martínez in the box. The Quakes drew closer in the 42nd minute when an Espinoza free kick near the right corner flag was headed past Pulskamp by Cristian “Chicho” Arango to make it 3-2 at intermission.

The Quakes aimed to complete the comeback in the second half, but in the 73rd minute, Salloi finished an Erik Thommy pass from the right wing into the back of the net to push the SKC lead back to 4-2. Thommy added a fifth for SKC in the 85th minute off a Manu Garcia feed. In the fourth minute of stoppage time, the Quakes drew a penalty and Arango converted from the spot for the final 5-3 margin.

The Black and Blue will now travel to Columbus, Ohio next Saturday, April 26, to take on the Columbus Crew. Kickoff from Lower.com Field will take place at 4:30 p.m. PT and will be broadcast globally on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV (English/Spanish), as well as on local radio via KSFO 810 AM (English) and 1370 AM La Kaliente (Spanish).

Roots Dominate in First Half, Defeat Orange County SC 2-0 at Home

For the first time in 2025 Oakland are winners at home. After a dominant first half and a defensive showcase in the second Roots move to 2-1-4 in the USL Championship, defeating Orange County SC 2-0 at the Oakland Coliseum on Saturday afternoon.

Roots began the match looking hungry for a goal. Their attacking pressure in the final third even without possession led to numerous turnovers and extended periods of looking dangerous up front.

This tenacity didn’t take long to pay off. In the 10th minute of the match, an Orange County turnover on a pass towards their own back line led to a shot in close from Roots forward Peter Wilson which rebounded off the keeper and back to Wilson who played an easy cross in front of the net to linemate Wolfgang Prentice. Prentice struck a ball to the right side beating the out of position keeper, scoring his fourth goal of the season — his third in Roots’ last two USL Championship contests — and putting Oakland up 1-0.

Following the goal, Orange County began to work their way back into the contests, earning their best scoring chances of the first half. But this momentum shift was short lived. Oakland soon went right back to work on offense, hemming Orange County into their defensive third and moving the ball brilliantly around the pitch.

In the 31st minute Oakland doubled their lead. On a counter attack opportunity, Roots pushed numbers quickly up the field and into the Orange County area. A cross from the left side of the field landed at the feet of midfielder Jürgen Damm just to the right side of the goal who waited patiently before chipping it short over the defense to find Wilson who elevated over two defenders and put a header off the post and in to make it 2-0.

The second half saw Roots begin to drop back a bit to protect their lead. Orange County began to hold an advantage in possession time, but despite this, the Oakland defense as well as a few key plays by goalkeeper Kendall McIntosh frustrated the Orange County attack throughout the second half.

Roots kept their 2-0 lead into the final whistle, earning their first home victory of 2025. The squad will now head back out on the road for their first action in the Jägermeister USL Cup as they prepare to face USL League One side Spokane Velocity for a Group Stage fixture on Sunday April 27th at 4 PM PT.

Match Recap: Bay FC bests North Carolina 1-0, secures second

shutout of 2025

CARY, N.C. (April 19, 2024) — Bay FC bested North Carolina Courage 1-0 Saturday night in Cary, N.C, taking all three points for the second time this season. A 33rd minute score by Kiki Pickett ended as the game winner, coming off a long-distance strike by the Stanford product and assisted by San Jose native Joelle Anderson. Bay FC secures its second shutout of the season with the result, and first road victory of 2025.

“A great performance from the entire team,” said Head Coach Albertin Montoya following the match. “Today we came in with the right mindset, we defended very well against an opponent that’s one of the best in how they keep the ball and how they move you around. Just really happy for the team, this is a very difficult stadium to win at.”

The hosts nearly opened the scoring just five minutes in. After building up the right flank, a cross played into the box was met by a Courage attacker on the back post but was played into Jordan Silkowitz before being cleared away. Bay FC answered with a chance of its own five minutes later, when a shot from Taylor Huff was blocked after Racheal Kundananji advanced up the left side and found her teammate in space.

Bay FC opened the scoring in the 33rd minute. After a throw-in restarted play on the left flank, Anderson found Pickett at the top of the penalty box, who rocketed a half-volley off the right post and into the back of the net with a sensational strike. The score was Pickett’s second of the season, the first coming in similar fashion vs. Utah Royals March 15 and winning NWSL Goal of the Week for Week 1.

Oregon Soar 12

Fremont High School, Oakland, CA

Saturday, April 19, 2025

Under cool weather, clear skies and wind gusts, the Bay Area Falcons welcomed the newly renamed Oregon Soar to “The Nest” at Fremont High School in Oakland. The game would play out as a game of scoring runs. The Falcons established a lead of seven, but Oregon would not quit and they went on their own run, bringing the score within two, before a great Falcon defensive block would end the final drive as time elapsed. Above, catching the defense off guard, Calise Cardenas (#7) would haul in a huge upwind huck, positioning the disc just outside the end zone and leading to an easy break point score to start the scoring. The Bay Area Falcons played host to Oregon Soar in a Western Ultimate League (WUL) conference game at Fremont High School in Oakland, CA.

In their last home game, Georgia Cardosa (#71) had several foot-blocks. This week she used her speed to intercept the pass, preventing a score early in the first quarter.

With the game-ending defensive play, Lily Steponaitis (#19), would catch the throw, deflecting it just enough to fall to the turf as time ran out. To view a photo album, visit our Facebook Page or visit www.ultimatesportsguide.net. Photo and caption

Dan Fouts -- from the Autograph Collection of Rich Yee

I met San Francisco native Dan Fouts at a sports collectors show many years ago. I remember I had plenty of time to talk to him about his 14-year football career with the San Diego chargers and he was kind enough to spend the time to answer all my questions. I really like this photo which he signed for me.

Once heralded as a trailblazer with a groundbreaking (at the time) $8 million NIL contract signed in 2022 while still in high school, Iamaleava’s recent departure from Tennessee underscores the perils of mismanaged negotiations, inadequate representation, and a lack of strategic public relations.

The unraveling of Iamaleava’s tenure at Tennessee began to surface when On3 reported that he was seeking to renegotiate his NIL deal with Spyre Sports Group, Tennessee’s NIL collective. His original contract, reportedly set to pay him $2.2 million in 2025, was no longer competitive in a market where quarterbacks like Darian Mensah reportedly secured $8 million over two years at Duke (a deal I helped negotiate, so I can't confirm any monetary terms). Iamaleava’s camp, led by his father, Nic, and family friend Cordell Landers, supposedly sought a raise to approximately $4 million annually, alongside assurances of roster improvements to protect Iamaleava after multiple concussions in 2024. From what I have heard, they believed that Nico was worth even more than $4 million per year and potentially up to $10 million, which could not be justified, no matter what type of analysis someone was running on the talented QB.

Tensions escalated when Iamaleava skipped practice on April 11, a move perceived as a negotiating tactic reminiscent of NFL holdouts. This absence, allegedly not properly communicated to head coach Josh Heupel, proved to be a breaking point. On April 12, Tennessee announced it was parting ways with Iamaleava, who entered the spring transfer portal on April 16 with a “do not contact” tag, signaling a likely commitment to UCLA because it didn't appear that a larger market had developed for Nico's services at the time. The public nature of the dispute, fueled by leaks and social media outbursts, including Nic Iamaleava’s critical X post denying negotiations (and calling a respected journalist a bitch), left Iamaleava’s reputation tarnished and his market value in question.

Entrusting Iamaleava’s career to his father and a family friend, neither of whom are certified agents, raised red flags across the industry. While family involvement can provide emotional support, it often lacks the expertise required to navigate the complex NIL landscape. As I noted in a recent X post, “Nico Iamaleava needs to put up walls between him and his handlers. Get in front of the negativity and rehabilitate his image asap. I hear he’s a good person. But he’s getting terrible advice.” The college market is fraught with regulatory uncertainty and power imbalances, particularly when negotiating with sophisticated collectives. Parents and friends, no matter how well-intentioned, may struggle to discern long-term contractual implications or manage high-stakes negotiations without alienating key stakeholders.

WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca to Host Electrify Your Career in Motorsports Workshop in Partnership with WIMNA and Bosch

Photo provided by WIMNA

MONTEREY, Calif., April 18, 2025WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca is proud to be a key partner in the third annual Electrify Your Career in Motorsports workshop, an immersive two-day program presented by Women in Motorsports North America (WIMNA) and Bosch. Taking place during the IMSA race weekend from May 9–11, the workshop is designed to inspire and equip women interested in exploring career opportunities in motorsports, particularly in STEM fields, and is open for applications now.

Available to all college and university students, the Electrify Your Career in Motorsports workshop will be hosted at three premier raceways throughout the 2025 season. The program starts at Laguna Seca, an inspiring venue, as the raceway's newly appointed CEO, Lauri Eberhart, is a founding board member of WIMNA and recently launched a Monterey Chapter of the organization. This event aligns perfectly with WIMNA's mission to Advance, Connect, and Enable (ACE) women across all motorsports industry sectors.

“Electrify Your Career in Motorsports aims to do just that—empower and educate the next generation of women in motorsports,” said Cindy Sisson, Executive Director of WIMNA. “With the ongoing collaboration with Bosch, we’ve been able to expand this program each year, and we are thrilled to add Laguna Seca as a host venue in 2025. The raceway is an iconic destination and a dream location for anyone passionate about motorsports.”

Bosch, a leader in innovation and technology, continues to play an instrumental role in the growth of the program. “For Bosch, hosting a program that fosters education, creates opportunities, and drives the industry forward is a win-win,” said Brooke Bond, Motorsports Operations Lead for Bosch USA. “We’ve seen firsthand how initiatives like this directly contribute to opening doors for the next generation, and we are honored to be part of this important effort.”

STEM education is one of the core pillars of the IMSA race series, making this program a natural fit within the broader vision for the 2025 season. As IMSA continues to emphasize technological advancements and sustainable engineering, Electrify Your Career in Motorsports serves as an ideal platform to showcase the expanding career pathways available within the industry. By integrating STEM-focused opportunities throughout its race events, IMSA reaffirms its commitment to developing the next generation of motorsports professionals.

The workshop offers participants an invaluable opportunity to gain industry insights through networking sessions, classroom discussions, behind-the-scenes tours of paddocks and garages, and access to manufacturer areas. Students will also have the chance to hear directly from professionals across various disciplines in motorsports, helping them discover the diverse career paths available within the industry.

The program continues later in the season at the Michelin GT Challenge at VIRginia International Raceway August 22 – 25 and at the Lone Star Le Man's event September 5-7 at Circuit of the Americas. All three sessions are expected to fill up. Interested persons can register to participate in Electrify Your Career in Motorsports on WIMNA’s website.

NASCAR Cup Series race

SONOMA, Calif. (April 10, 2025) – Sonoma Raceway announced today that The Save Mart Companies has signed a multi-year extension to continue as co-title sponsor of the annual NASCAR Cup Series race at Sonoma Raceway, amplifying the raceway’s most enduring partnership.

Having first partnered with Sonoma Raceway for the NASCAR Cup Series race in 1992, The Save Mart Companies looks to celebrate their 33-year partnership July 11-13th this year. The Save Mart Companies relationship as either title or co-title sponsor of the annual NASCAR Cup Series event in Sonoma is one of the longest running event sponsorships in all of NASCAR Cup Series history.

“We couldn’t be more proud to continue the relationship we share with The Save Mart Companies,” said Sonoma Raceway Executive Vice President and General Manager Brian Flynn. “The Save Mart name has become synonymous with Sonoma Raceway and we look forward to making many more race memories with our friends from Save Mart in the years to come.”

“This enduring partnership showcases The Save Mart Companies' appreciation for the NASCAR community, creating excitement and shared experiences that continue to inspire,” said Shane Sampson, chief executive officer of The Save Mart Companies. “The Save Mart Companies' dedication to our shoppers resonates in every aspect of our business—from our stores to the heart of our communities. Our customers share a deep love for NASCAR, and this partnership is a testament to that shared passion.”

The 2024 race weekend saw a thrilling finish as fans witnessed Northern California’s own Kyle Larson take the checkered flag on Sunday, holding off Martin Truex Jr. on the last lap to clinch his third win of the season. Larson grew up in Elk Grove, California and considers Sonoma Raceway his home track. His last wine country victory was in 2021, the same year he was named NASCAR Cup Series Champion. Legacy Motor Club driver John Hunter Nemechek was behind the wheel of #42, Save Mart’s first sponsored NASCAR Cup Series car, which made its race debut in front of a great race day crowd.

As part of its race sponsorship, The Save Mart Companies is once again launching the popular “Chase the Savings Sweepstakes” during the buildup to race day at all Save Mart and Lucky store locations, giving shoppers a chance to win more than $1,500,000 in cash and prizes. On race day, George Pulido, The Save Mart Companies’ 2024 Outstanding Store Manager of the Year, will serve as Honorary Starter and have the honor of waving the green flag to start the race.

Bears defeat Gaels to clinch spot in title match

Bears Punch Ticket To National Championship

Cal Takes Down Saint Mary’s In Semifinals To Advance To Title Match

BERKELEY – The west region No. 1 California rugby team defeated No. 2 Saint Mary's Saturday afternoon at a sold-out Witter Rugby Field in the 2025 D1A National Collegiate Championship semifinals to punch its ticket to the title match. The Golden Bears will head to Indianapolis on May 3 to take on east region No. 1 Life University in the national championship.

"We are fortunate to have a team of Saint Mary's caliber in Northern California," Cal head coach Jack Clark said. "I am immensely proud of our boys and their captain Charlie Walsh. It was a special Strawberry Canyon day."

Cal never trailed in the contest, putting points up on the board first in the 11th minute. The Bears worked their way into scoring territory and, after a series of pick-and-jams just a few meters out from the goal-line, senior lock Hugo Schreuder used his wingspan to extend across the line and punch in Cal's first try. Freshman center Filip Edstrom added the extras to make it 7-0 in favor of the Bears.

Stanford Cardinal

Notre Dame Takes Game One

Stanford scored first, but Notre Dame earned the 9-3 victory

STANFORD, Calif. – Opening a three-game ACC series at home against Notre Dame on Friday, Stanford (19-15, 6-13 ACC) scored first in the first inning, but eventually dropped a 9-3 decision to the Fighting Irish (18-17, 5-14 ACC).

After a 1-2-3 top of the first from sophomore Joey Volchko, the Cardinal plated a run on two hits just three batters into the home half of the inning to take a 1-0 lead. Trevor Haskins led off with a single before scoring from first base on a double into the left field corner from Jimmy Nati.

Notre Dame took advantage of an error en route to tying the game at 1-1 in the second, and Carson Tinney blasted a go-ahead two-run home run off Volchko in the third to hand Notre Dame a lead it would not relinquish.

Following the hot start, Notre Dame right-hander Jack Radel settled in nicely – facing the minimum from the second through the fifth to keep the Cardinal off the board.

Saint Mary's College Gaels

SB | Buckley Ties Single Season Home Run Record, Nishikawa Tosses Gem, Gaels Split Doubleheader

with Santa Clara

MORAGA, Calif. — After an extra innings thriller in game one of their series, Saint Mary's (20-22, 3-3 WCC) and Santa Clara (27-16, 7-2 WCC) split a twin bill today in two very different ball games. Game one saw the Gaels strike for one run in the first and ride that to a 1-0 victory, while game two was a much higher scoring affair, with the Broncos besting Saint Mary's 11-5. The Broncos now move into first place by a 1.5 game margin in the WCC, while the Gaels fall to third place, 2.5 games behind Santa Clara. Saint Mary's will have nine more conference games to make up ground, while the Broncos have just six remaining.

GAME ONE: SMC 1 - SCU 0

After the Gaels were shutout over nine full innings yesterday, Sam Buckley made sure that that wouldn't happen in game two, launching a moon shot blast over the left field fence to end Saint Mary's scoring drought against the Broncos. The home run was her 12th of the season, tying her with Sarah Lira for the most ever in a single season in program history.

Softball Splits to Take the Series Against Saint Mary's and Remain Atop WCC

MORAGA, Calif. – Santa Clara softball split the doubleheader against Saint Mary's on Saturday to take the West Coast Conference series and maintain atop the league standings. SCU is 7-2 in conference play, ahead of second place LMU who stands at 5-3 after losing to Pacific earlier in the day. In third place sits Saint Mary's and Oregon State, both at 3-3 having played two series thus far compared to three for Santa Clara.

Game 1: Saint Mary's 1 - Santa Clara 0

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Sam Buckley hit a solo home run in the first and Mia Nishikawa threw a three-hit shutout to help Saint Mary's (20-21, 3-2 WCC) win the first game of the doubleheader 1-0 to even the series at 1-all.
  • Buckley led off the bottom of the first depositing a 3-2 offering from Hannah Edwards just over the left field fence for her 12th home run of the season and that was the only run needed by Nishikawa. The Gaels hurler threw an economical 92 pitch shutout giving up a hit in the first, fourth and seventh. In each of those innings along with the sixth, the Broncos put a runner in scoring position but every time Nishikawa pitched out of it. It was the first time the Broncos have been shutout all season.
  • Meanwhile, Edwards was solid in her own right. She struck out a career-high 10 batters over six innings and allowed six hits, two of which were against Buckley.
