Ryder Cup Commentary,
-- Part One
| | | |
A Candid Admission: The article below, Part One, was written before Day 3 play had started and the USA's Rounds One and Two play had been terrible. Instead of defeatism, USA mounted an incredible comeback, nearly completing one of the greatest in sports history. The gloom and doom had been headlines on all sports websites, like Yahoo's "Ryder Cup: After three sessions, Europe has broken the United States."
Au contraire, Yahoo. Europe had an eight-point lead coming into the day, and still didn’t get to the Cup-clinching point until the 10th match. It's as if Nixon's speech, below, had spurred the team to start an immediate climb back to the highest mountain. My own sadness at the American's performance was inexcusable, but as I watched each match unfold, I began to believe we could do it. In fact, it was the Europeans who appeared to be broken. I am particularly glad for Captain Keegan Bradley, rescued from what would have been scorn and ridicule. Now the climb to the highest mountain begins anew for USA Golfers, as does Victory at the next Ryder Cup, with renewed team spirit, camaraderie and toughness.
Richard Nixon: Words for the USA Ryder Cup Team and
Captain Bradley
“The greatness comes not when things go always good for you. But the greatness comes when you're really tested, when you take some knocks, some disappointments, when sadness comes. Because only if you've been in the deepest valley can you ever know how magnificent it is to be on the highest mountain." President Richard Nixon, August 9, 1974, who left office under a "Dark Cloud":
Welcome to the Deepest Valley, Team USA, for certainly "the sadness" has come for you, the "Who's Who of America's" top golfers
players, who were never in contention and were defeated by the European squad. The fact is, the Europeans simply played better and may, simply, BE better. The evidence? The "Dark Cloud?' "The Beatdown at Bethpage Black."
So, remember those words from someone who had been on the Highest Mountain: A former President who left under a "Dark Cloud," and that no matter how disappointed you may feel now, it is the time to start your return to the magnificence of the highest mountain with a Ryder Cup Victory!
And along with those wise words, remember these: "Drive for Show, and Putt for Dough!"

San Francisco 49ers
vs.
Jacksonville Jaguars
| | | |
Levi's Stadium fans saw Brock Purdy's return, but many others remained absent with injuries. The gaps in personnel and Brock's long absence took a toll. An early San Francisco fumble led to a Jaguars TD, but the 49ers clicked on a FG (7-3 Jaguars). After a great catch by Pearsall, an interception by J'ville led to a TD (14-3, JAGS) at 11:21 second Q. A second 49er FG made it (14-6, JAGS), but a 54-yard kickoff return helped give the Jags a FG and a (17-6) halftime Jaguars lead.
The Niners scored on a nifty shovel pass from Purdy to McCaffery, and a two-point conversion made it (17-14, JAGS). A Purdy interception led to a Jags FG, (20-14). An 87-yard punt return and a missed conversion made it 26-14 (JAGS). The fourth quarter saw SF's best drive, with three quick completions passes and a TD pass to Jake Tonges, which closed the gap to (26-21, Jags), but which would also be the final score as the Niners failed to take advantage of a missed Jags FG try when a Brock Purdy fumble spoiled any possible fourth quarter rally.
Final Score: Jacksonville Jaguars 26, San Francisco 49ers 21.

Giants Season Ends On An
Up Note
by Bruce Macgowan
| | |
|
Giants’ fans have gotten used to mediocrity these last four years. The Giants have been an average team which means they basically win as many games as they lose. That’s hardly a model for long-term success.
But unlike the previous three years, at least the 2025 Giants were interesting and sometimes very exciting to watch. They managed to win a bunch of games late on wild plays such as Partrick Bailey’s inside-the-park homer against the Phillies, but on the flip side, their bullpen blew a bunch of games in the late innings.
Now with the off season ahead, what do you think president of baseball operations Buster Posey is going to do?
A lot of fans think that Bob Melvin should be fired because he couldn’t jolt his team out of a ghastly two-month malaise that ruined their season. Melvin is a good guy and better than average manager, but has not taken any team he’s managed to a World Series and one has to wonder if he ever will. If the Giants paid him off for the last year of his contract and fired him, who would replace him?
Many Giants fans would love to see Bruce Bochy, who has just completed his contract with Texas return, but is Bochy really interested in managing at age 70? He’s won four World Series rings so he’s climbed all the mountains. Bringing him back seems unlikely. And who else out there is available who is that good?
One thing the Giants DO need is a new hitting coach.
There’s no excuse for Matt Chapman and Willy Adames (who are getting paid a TON of money) to be hitting between .200 and .230. As a team, the Giants hitters batted a paltry .235, third worst in the league. With a lineup that features Chapman, Adames, Rafael Devers, Heliot Ramos and Jung-Hoo Lee? That’s inexcusable.
As for next season, the starting lineup looks good. Twenty-year-old future star Bryce Eldridge will probably DH most of the time while Rafael Devers plays first. Young outfielder Drew Gilbert will be given every chance to win the regular RF position. The rest of the starting eight is set.
The major concern for the Giants is pitching. Robbie Ray was clearly run down by the end of the year. Landen Roupp, who looked so good in the first half, missed most of the second half but will hopefully be ready to return in 2026. Youngsters Trevor McDonald and Carson Seymour both showed promise and should get chances to prove their worth next spring.
Meanwhile, the bullpen needs major shoring up. Once the strength of the team, the relief corps was decimated by the season-ending injuries to valuable middle men Erik Miller and Randy Rodriguez, plus the trades of Camilo Doval and fan favorite Tyler Rogers. It’s possible Rogers could return because he’s a free agent and really liked playing in San Francisco. But as far as the closer, Ryan Walker blew several games that cost the club a playoff berth, so the Giants probably need a replacement for Walker who should go back to middle relief or be a set-up man.
So Buster Posey has some challenging days ahead. Good luck
to him!

Oakland Not
Dead As
Title Town
by Dave Newhouse
| | |
The House of Champions still remains in Oakland, just relocated. The Oakland Coliseum-Arena has been abandoned by departing sports teams, but Raimondi Park has been reborn as a baseball facility
And what a rebirth, as the Oakland Ballers just won the independent Pioneer Baseball League title in spectacular fashion after a record-breaking season.
The Ballers, demonstrating a dramatic flair, lost the first two games of the best-of-five championship series against the Idaho Falls Chukars, then came roaring back to take the final three contests, including an 8-1 victory for the title.
The B’s, not to be confused with the A’s were a dominant team throughout the PBL season. Their 73-23 regular season record broke the PBL record for most wins in a season. And they won 13 straight series to complete the regular season.
I hope the Las Vegas Raiders, the Golden State Warriors and the Sacramento A’s weren’t too busy in their current locations to notice that Oakland didn’t just die and disappear with their collective departures.
Quite the opposite, traitors. The new House of Champions in Oaktown is an ancient, remodeled ballpark named after a familiar Oakland baseball family following a war-time tragedy.
| | Raimondi Park, Oakland, CA | | |
The Raimondis have a long baseball tradition in Oakland. Catcher Billy Raimondi played for the Triple-A Oakland Oaks for what seemed like forever. Brother Ernie Raimondi was a promising infield prospect who was killed in World War II.
The Raimondi family, itself, owned a paint store in Oakland’s Montclair District. I painted my home twice over after frequenting that store, which no longer is in business.
But because of the Ballers, Raimondi Park was renovated after sitting in disrepair for decades. Regardless, baseball was alive again in Oakland, and a capacity crowd of 4,100 watched the Ballers become champions.
Oakland, too, is a champion of spirit and heart, qualities which remained even though the three traitors tried to sever them. Oakland also added two soccer teams, the men’s Roots and the women’s Soul, who’ll compete in a new facility at the Coliseum site.
Many abandoned sports cities across the country haven’t recovered with the success, no matter how large or small, of Oakland. Sellouts are sellouts, regardless of stadium size. Oakland took quickly to the B’s with A+ support.
Critics didn’t see this coming, believing as Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred, that it was Oakland’s fault in losing the A’s to, eventually, Las Vegas. That’s pure nonsense. A’s owner John Fisher is a bumble head with inherited money, so let’s see how this A’s traveling circus turns out. So far, a clown show.
| | Oakland Ballers pitcher Noah Millikan completing a 7-2 triumph over the Great Falls Voyagers at Raimondi Park on September 4 | | |
In the interim, congratulations to Ballers owners Paul Freedman and Bryan Carmel for restoring pride in Oakland, and to B’s manager Aaron Miles for pulling off a dynamic championship victory.
As for the B’s standouts, pitcher Noah Millikan had a 7-1 record and a league-best 2.12 ERA. Closer Connor Sullivan tied a PBL record with 19 saves. Offensively, Christian Almanza had 31 homers and 105 RBI, while Cam Bufford had 20 homers and 20 steals.
It took all of that might to defeat the Idaho Falls Chukars, not to mention prior the Missoula Paddleheads, Yuba-Sutter High Wheelers, Rocky Mountain Vibes, and the Grand Junction Jackalopes.
And in only their second year of operation, the Ballers embraced the Bay Area with their Ballunteers’ volunteer fans support group, helping to clean up Lake Merritt, leading a back-to-school campus beautification week, and launching a community kitchens mobile meals team.
Go Ballers! You did it right on the baseball diamond, and you’re doing it right in the community. Oakland is grateful.

Verlander ends his '25 season on high note, leaves door open
to SF return
by Maria Guardado
SAN FRANCISCO -- Justin Verlander has made it clear that he intends to keep pitching in 2026. The question now is whether he’ll be back for a second year with the Giants.
Verlander capped his 20th Major League season by spinning six innings of two-run ball to earn the win in the Giants’ 4-3 win over the Rockies on Saturday afternoon at Oracle Park.
The 42-year-old right-hander surrendered a pair of solo home runs to Hunter Goodman and Brenton Doyle in the first two innings, but he put up zeros over his final four frames to end the year with a 3.85 ERA over 152 innings in 29 starts this year.

WEST SACRAMENTO -- The Athletics will pay homage to their new home base with the addition of an alternate uniform.
On the final day of their inaugural season at Sutter Health Park on Sunday, the A’s revealed a new alternate gold jersey for 2026 featuring “Sacramento” in green script across the chest and a green A’s logo on the left sleeve.
Similarly designed to their current gold jerseys, which feature green “A’s” chest insignia, the updated golds will provide a second alternate uniform along with the kelly green jerseys to accompany the traditional home whites and road grays.
“Sacramento has welcomed the Athletics with incredible passion and support,” said A’s President Marc Badain. “The new ‘Sacramento’ jersey is our way of recognizing that support and saying thank you to the fans, businesses and community leaders who helped bring Major League Baseball to town.”

Josef Martínez goal, Daniel’s heroics in net propel San Jose back into ninth and final Western Conference playoff spot; Quakes travel to BC Place next Sunday to face
Vancouver Whitecaps FC
SAN DIEGO — The San Jose Earthquakes defeated San Diego FC 1-0 on Saturday night at Snapdragon Stadium in front of 29,437 fans.
The hosts almost struck first in the initial moments of the match, but Hirving “Chucky” Lozano’s chip over San Jose goalkeeper Daniel floated wide right. Instead, it was the Earthquakes who would open the scoring in the 14th minute when Chicho Arango threaded a through ball past the SDFC back line to a surging Josef Martínez, who coolly slotted it home to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Moments later, Martínez had a second opportunity to double the advantage, but his blast from the left side of the box was parried away by San Diego goalkeeper CJ Dos Santos. Later in the half, SDFC had a golden chance in minute 37, but Onni Valakari’s attempt from point-blank range was wide right. The Earthquakes went into intermission with the slim advantage.
San Diego came out firing after halftime, with Daniel diving to his right to bat away an Andres Dreyer shot on goal in the opening minutes. Daniel, who would be named Northern California Honda Dealers Man of the Match, again rose to the occasion in minute 67 when he stymied Lozano right in front of net after hauling in a diagonal ball from Valakari. From that point forward, the Quakes’ defense was impregnable, repelling 19 shots all the way through the final whistle for the team’s first clean sheet since May 28. With the victory, San Jose climbs into the ninth and final Western Conference playoff spot with two games to play in the regular season.
The Black and Blue continue their road trip on Sunday, Oct. 5, when they face Vancouver Whitecaps FC. Kickoff from BC Place in Vancouver, British Columbia, will take place at 3 p.m. PT and will be broadcast globally via MLS Season Pass on Apple TV (English/Spanish), as well as via local radio on KSFO 810 AM (English) and KZSF 1370 AM (Spanish).

Roots Start Hot but Concede Late in 3-3 Draw at Phoenix Rising FC
It was a tale of two halves for Oakland in Phoenix on Saturday night, as Roots came out of the gate firing but couldn’t close out the match, earning a point in the Western Conference table with a 3-3 draw versus Rising FC.
Roots took (almost literally) no time to get on the board as Danny Trejo kicked off the scoring in the very first minute of the match when a turnover led to a one on one with the Rising keeper that Trejo had no trouble depositing into the twine from the top of the box to give his club a lightning quick 1-0 lead.
Roots doubled their lead just moments later when a deep pass from Panos Armenakas led to yet another breakaway opportunity, this time at the feet of Peter Wilson who came close to mirroring Trejo’s finish, bagging his 8th goal in eight appearances to make it 2-0 Oakland in the 9th minute.
To cap off a dominant start to the match Roots added on in the 22nd minute when both goal scorers combined for Oakland’s third of the first half when Trejo worked the ball into the box down the left side before putting a simple cross at the feet of Wilson who earned an easy brace for his 12th goal of the regular season, extending an unbelievable stretch of offense from the number nine.
Oakland continued to earn scoring chances, but former Roots player Charlie Dennis cut into the lead as time expired in the first half when a rebound off a save from Raphael Spiegel landed at the feet of Dennis who put the ball into the empty net to make it 3-1.
Phoenix nearly pulled another one back in the 66th minute after a netfront scrum led to a shot on target that Gagi Margvelashvili was able to freeze on the goal line, allowing Spiegel to clear it at the very last second.
Peter Wilson was everywhere in the match, and he nearly found a hat trick on multiple occasions, none better than a 70th minute moment where he found himself alone in the back yet again, but this time putting his shot wide of the target.
Phoenix began their comeback in earnest when Charlie Dennis earned a brace of his own after Rising earned a free kick just outside of Roots’ area. Dennis banked the service off the Oakland wall, and the shot found its way off the hands of Spiegel and into the net to make it 3-2 in the 86th.
In a stunning turn, Phoenix leveled at the death after earning a penalty kick in added time following a foul in the box that led to two red cards and two yellow cards being shown. Rémi Cabral was the man at the dot and finished his shot into the right side to salvage his side a point with the final whistle blowing the match dead at 3-3 just second later.
Luckily for Roots, results around the league were favorable, and despite the late comeback from Phoenix, Oakland still managed to gain ground on the field, now just four points below the playoff line.
Roots will remain on the road for their next action as they head to El Paso for a mid-week matchup with Locomotive FC on Wednesday, October 1st at 11 AM PT.

Bay FC fell behind early and never recovered in a 2-0 loss to Utah Royals FC on Saturday, Sept. 27, at PayPal Park. Utah got a ninth-minute goal from Janni Thomsen and Aisha Solórzano scored her first NWSL goal in the 18th minute to put the Royals ahead 2-0. That score would hold up the rest of the way, and Bay FC was held scoreless for the fourth time this season. With the defeat, Bay FC falls to 4W-7D-11L (19pts) on the season and swap position on the table with Utah, who improved to 5W-6D-11L (21pts) and

MLB Has To Be The King of Stats
Of All Sports
I read about Sandy Koufax being 94 and was going to ask a question about the Triple Crown of pitching but upon Googling "Triple Crown," I fell into the black hole of research and moved on to a Triple Crown question about baseball's batters.
(Next week I will have a Triple Crown
question about pitchers.)
Miguel Cabrera was the last Triple Crown winner in 2012. Before that it was Carl Yastrzemski in 1967. (Obviously, it is no small feat.) With that said, only two players have won the award twice.
Rogers Hornsby did it in 1922 and 1927.
Who is the second player in MLB history
to do it twice? (Answer below.)

| | Newsletter, Image, Likeness Vol. 151: Could Judge Boulware's Ruling Truly Be The Death Knell of NCAA Amateurism | | |
by Darren Heitner, Esq.
Founder of Heitnerlegal -- Sports, Entertainment, Trademarks, Copyrights, Business, Litigation, Arbitration
The Weekly Longer NIL Thought
What could be the most consequential judicial decision in the ongoing war between college athletes and the NCAA arrived last week by way of U.S. District Judge Richard Boulware's ruling in Martinson v. NCAA, which didn't just grant San Diego State defensive lineman Tatuo Martinson an injunction to play beyond the NCAA's five-year eligibility rule, it delivered a scathing indictment of the association's entire regulatory framework in the post-House settlement world.
What makes Judge Boulware's 24-page order particularly devastating for the NCAA isn't merely that he sided with another former JUCO player seeking extended eligibility. It's that he explicitly rejected the foundational premise that has allowed the NCAA to maintain its antitrust defenses for decades, which is the fiction that college athletics operates in some special, non-commercial sphere distinct from professional sports.
"The Court further rejects the notion that the product that the NCAA is offering—competitive college athletic sports events—is unique because the athletes are unpaid amateurs," Judge Boulware wrote. "They are not. This is now a labor market with compensated workers."
If the concept of amateurism was not already deceased, then that single sentence may well mark the moment historians identify as the death of NCAA amateurism as a legal concept.
As Judge Boulware observed, amateurism changed once direct institutional payments became a reality. The judge cited not just the explosion of NIL opportunities, now valued at $1.1 billion annually, but more significantly, the fact that "NCAA members can now directly pay student-athletes for their services."
