Out With Crackerjacks!

FatBoy Ice Cream Sandwich

It is no wonder that Nathan’s hotdog eating champion Joey Chestnut downed 27 plates of FatBoy ice cream to break the world record. It turns out that FatBoy is the county’s best-selling,

little known ice cream sandwich.

Its connection to sporting goes way beyond ice cream eating contests. FatBoy’s Great American Road Trip previously handed out free frozen treats in Los Angeles, drawing big crowds directly outside Dodgers Stadium, in addition to handing them out to fuel fans on game nights at pro arenas, such as at Utah Jazz games.

FatBoy (produced by Casper’s Ice Cream) sponsored

NASCAR driver J.J. Yeley (below) for the #53 Rick Ware Racing

entry at Texas Motor Speedway.

Ron Wotus will fill the third-base coaching role on an interim basis

Giants reassign 3B coach Borg; Wotus named interim replacement

Owen Perkins

DENVER -- The Giants announced on Friday that they have reassigned third-base coach Hector Borg to a new role within their player development staff. Ron Wotus will fill the third-base coaching role on an interim basis until the organization identifies a permanent replacement.

Borg has made several questionable calls from the third-base coaching box this season, including a rally killer in the eighth inning of Wednesday’s 3-2 loss to the Diamondbacks, when he sent Willy Adames home from second when a ball got past Arizona center fielder Jorge Barrosa. The play was backed up by Ryan Waldschmidt in left, who hit the cutoff man en route to Adames easily being thrown out at the plate while Casey Schmitt watched from the on-deck circle.

Manager Tony Vitello called Wotus’ role a “temporary solution,” acknowledging that Wotus has taken on commitments away from the field since retiring, despite maintaining a presence in the dugout during home games.

“He's done a lot for a lot of different people here,” Vitello said of Wotus. “He'll be able to help the whole group bridge to whatever is next for us.”

Athletics Carlos Cortes gestures after rounding the bases

after hitting a home run

The A's may have finally found their new leadoff hitter

This story was excerpted from Martín Gallegos’ A’s Beat newsletter. To read the full newsletter, click here. And subscribe

to get it regularly in your inbox.

WEST SACRAMENTO -- Athletics outfielder Carlos Cortes got behind 1-2 in the count to lead off Friday’s game against the Padres in San Diego, but it didn’t stop him from lashing a single into center field on one hop.

One pitch later, when first baseman Nick Kurtz roped a double into the gap in left-center, Cortes charged around third base and dove headfirst into home plate, scoring all the way from first to give his club a quick 1-0 lead.

It was a perfect example of how Cortes fits in excellently as the A’s leadoff man, a job he has seized -- and has run with -- in recent days. Cortes has led off the past nine games for the A’s, and he’s 4-for-7 with a pair of walks and a home run in those opportunities. He’s 8-for-27 (.296) with a .907 OPS overall in the leadoff role.

“Cortes has done a really nice job in the leadoff spot,” A’s manager Mark Kotsay said before Monday’s series opener against the Mariners at Sutter Health Park.

A 5-foot-7 outfielder with one career stolen base who described himself as a “short, slow lefty” in 2025 might not seem like the prototypical leadoff hitter, but nothing about Cortes is particularly normal. The Orlando native, in fact, is a switch-thrower, a natural left-hander in the outfield who is able to play the infield throwing right-handed if needed. And after becoming a Minor League free agent after eight seasons in the Mets organization, Cortes has defied the odds to become a success with the A’s: He owns a career .324 average and a .918 OPS in the Majors.

Oakland Ballers

Ballers slug their way to victory

to sweep Mobiles

Risse throws 6.1 scoreless, Ballers hammer

four homers in sweep

By Gareth Kwok

OAKLAND, CA – Behind a brilliant start from Aidan Risse (W, 1-1) and four home runs, the Oakland Ballers defeated the RedPocket Mobiles 7-1 on Sunday afternoon from Raimondi Park to complete a three-game sweep.

Oakland (6-6) utilized its power once again to overwhelm RedPocket starting right-hander Charlie Adamson (L, 0-2). With the Ballers ahead by one, Jake Allgeyer and T.J. McKenzie hit solo shots in the fourth and fifth, respectively, to give the Ballers a 3-0 lead.

In the sixth, Esai Santos and Cam Bufford followed with solo shots of their own as part of a four-run sixth. Noah Blythe doubled home a run and Nick Leehey singled him home to give Oakland its biggest lead of the day at 7-0.

Oakland's 33 homers this season are second-most in the Pioneer League through the first 12 games.

Risse (W, 1-1) twirled a gem in his third start of the season. The former San Francisco Don used his sinker and slider to pitch 6.1 shutout frames, allowing five hits and two walks with four strikeouts to earn his first win of the season. It's the third consecutive 6+ inning start by a Baller and the first Ballers scoreless start of the season.

Right-handers Matt Lozovoy and Michael Riley made their Ballers debuts after being acquired over the weekend. Lozovoy threw a scoreless eighth with a strikeout. Riley surrendered a homer to Justin Johnson but closed it out in the ninth to seal the win.

The Ballers will now hit the road to Montana for 12 games beginning with a three-game series on Tuesday night against the Glacier Range Riders in Kalispell, MT. First pitch is scheduled for 5:35 p.m from Glacier Bank Park. Fans can tune in beginning at 5:20 pm on the Oakland Ballers YouTube Channel.

San Jose Sharks

Six finalist teams will present pitches at Final Pitch Day taking place at SAP Center on June 1, 2026

The National Hockey League (NHL), National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA), and SAP with support from the Sharks Foundation, today announced the finalist teams for the NHL/NHLPA Innovation Competition Final Pitch Day presented by SAP, taking place Monday, June 1 at SAP Center in San Jose.

Marking the first Hockey Innovation Competition hosted on the West Coast—and the first presented with support from an NHL club foundation—the San Jose edition challenged students from across Northern California to reimagine how hockey and sport can drive greater access, youth wellness, and community connection.

Inspired by the Bay Area’s culture of innovation, collaboration and technology, students explored solutions aligned with three innovation pillars: expanding hockey in educational spaces, supporting physical and mental wellness for youth, and creating more inclusive ways to experience the game for underrepresented audiences.

The competition engaged more than 150 students representing 14 colleges and universities across California, spanning 21 academic disciplines. On Final Pitch Day, six finalist teams will present their ideas live at SAP Center to a panel of leaders from the NHL, SAP, San Jose Sharks and City of San Jose.

Oakland Roots SC

Roots Fall 0-1 at Home to Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC

Highlights

For the first time this season, Roots have fallen in back-to-back regular season fixtures following an 0-1 loss to visiting Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC at the Oakland Coliseum on Saturday evening.

The match began as some have for Oakland this season, conceding a goal early when in the 5th minute a cross in from the right side of Roots’ penalty area took an unfortunate deflection off of Oakland’s Michael Edwards and into his own side’s goal to make it 0-1 Colorado Springs.

Following this opening goal, Colorado Springs looked to smother Roots’ attack for the remainder of the contest. They did so successfully, as Roots were not able to muster a shot on target for the entire 90 minutes of the match.

While the Switchbacks’ offense also struggled to find openings in the Oakland backline, their early goal proved enough as the final whistle blew with the scoreboard still reading 0-1 Colorado Springs.

Roots will now return to Prinx Tires USL Cup play, as the club heads to Las Vegas for their next matchup, a group stage fixture versus Lights FC on June 6th at 7:30 PM PT.

Bay FC

Match Recap: Bay FC fall 3-1 at Orlando in final match ahead of June international break

ORLANDO, Fla. (May 29, 2026) – Bay FC fell 3-1 Friday on the road to the Orlando Pride in the club’s final contest before the June international break. A strong first half saw the club battle through wet and humid conditions and answer an early score from the hosts, taking a 1-1 deadlock into halftime. Two goals by Orlando in the first ten minutes of the second half proved to be the deciders, although Bay FC put the Pride on its heels as time ticked down.

“Obviously disappointed and frustrated with the outcome,” said head coach Emma Coates. “[I] thought was a game of two halves. This group, we’ve faced a lot of adversity over the last week, it’s been an intense week for us. I still stand by we’re making progress and headed in the right direction, and I’m confident that we’ll start getting points on the board in the, in the next block of games.”

After a weather delay pushed back the opening whistle for over an hour, a fast start saw both teams generate chances early in the match. Orlando opened the scoring in just the fourth minute of play, as forward Barbra Banda ran onto a bouncing ball played forward and slotted it in with her first touch. However, Bay FC answered the score just three minutes later, with midfielder Caroline Conti netting her first goal of the year after a failed clearance by Orlando fell to her in space.

Conti’s goal was the first of her career in the run of play and first in regular season play in 2026. All three of her tallies in 2025 came from the penalty spot, as did her penalty score in the club’s April friendly vs. Northern Super League side Ottawa Rapid FC.

On June 23 & 24th the 80th NBA draft will be held at the Barclay Center in Brooklyn, New York

The 1956 draft -- 70 years ago -- was very

Bill Russell, Sam Jones and K.C. Jones, core members of what would become the most storied dynasty of the NBA, were drafted

Which team originally drafted Bill Russell, the

Newsletter, Image, Likeness Vol. 186: The Protect College Sports Act Is Better Than What Came Before, But Short Of What It Claims To Be

by Darren Heitner, Esq.

Founder of Heitnerlegal -- Sports, Entertainment, Trademarks, Copyrights, Business, Litigation, Arbitration

The Weekly Longer NIL Thought

The SCORE Act was once again pulled from the House floor this week. It's the latest in a now-familiar pattern of Congress declining to act on college sports legislation.

The SCORE Act is now 0-for-3 in actually reaching the House floor for debate. Since 2020, more than 40 bills to reform college sports have been introduced in Congress. Not one bill has advanced. Not. One. Bill. Forty-plus bills, years of committee hearings, millions of dollars in lobbying expenditures, and the scoreboard reads zero. The people who complain that college sports need to be saved and that all of this spending is unsustainable have kept hiring lobbyists, kept flying delegations to Capitol Hill, and kept expressing urgency ... that evaporates the moment anyone is asked to actually vote.

My friend and colleague Michael McCann at Sportico cut to the core of it this week when he wrote that a better fix for what ails college sports would be for colleges to simply follow the NCAA rules they have already agreed to follow. He added a simple truth. Rules are only effective when they are followed and enforced and not undermined by the very targets of those rules, and no bill in Congress will change that. I'm not sure why people have a tough time comprehending that. Notre Dame AD Pete Bevacqua put a sharp point on it from a different angle when he told Sports Business Journal that the only thing worse than having no rules is having rules that are amorphous and that people are not following. Both men are describing the same disease, which Congress can't cure.

The institutions that have spent years pleading for federal antitrust protection and legislative guardrails are the same institutions that have spent those same years systematically dismantling whatever guardrails existed, whether through aggressive NIL structuring that mimics the pay-for-play model the rules were designed to prohibit, through cheering on antitrust lawsuits against their own membership organization, or through welcoming ineligible players through the courthouse door when the competitive moment demands it. The SCORE Act, had it been passed and signed into law, would have conferred antitrust protection to the NCAA, conferences, and schools when they establish rules for player transfers, eligibility, NIL, and agents. It also would have declared that college athletes are not employees. Those are significant structural changes, but they would not stop colleges from circumventing rules that are designed to promote fair play and fair competition. McCann is right in that the enforcement problem is not legislative. It is a will problem.

The San Francisco Unicorns will provide multi-channel exposure for BART across its platforms and at live game environments through the season, The BART logo will feature prominently during matchdays, and on the official team website with a dedicated directions widget. The organizations will also collaborate on player-driven content highlighting the convenience of public transit on matchdays.

Additionally, BART will host a booth at the Unicorns’ Family Day, to be held on June 21 at Adrian Wilcox High School, in Santa Clara, and will offer its riders discounted tickets throughout the MLC season.

The junior was selected among the nation's top pitchers and became one of the few student-athletes from the West Region to earn First Team distinction.

Quintero dominated opposing lineups all season long, finishing the year with a 28-8 overall record and a 1.44 ERA across 228.2 innings pitched. She struck out 141 batters while limiting opponents to a .193 batting average over 47 appearances.
