 49ers "ReBourne" vs. Rams --

Win 23-20 in Overtime, Thursday,

October 2nd

A hobbled Mac Jones led the 49ers to a dramatic 26-23 overtime victory against the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday. In for the injured Brock Purdy, Mac threw for 342 yards and two touchdowns. In overtime, it was rock and roll, not "Moody Blues" with clutch kicker Eddy Pineiro.

The game had the feel of the 49ers of yesteryear, with toughness from the of entire squad. Rookie Alfred Collins saved what appeared to be a sure Los Angeles TD when he ripped the ball away from Kyren Williams about a yard from the end zone. Kendrick Bourne played inspired ball. Deommodore Lenoir and rookie safety Marques Sigle were everywhere in the secondary. Trent Williams, Jake Brendel and the O-Line were consistently tough and the D-Line, with Sam Okuayinonu, Bryce Huff and cohorts there to stop the run.

Christian McCaffery's "yards per carry" stats were deceptively low as he was often a decoy for any defensive strategy deployed, but in crunch time CMC made the big plays. This team was reminiscent of the days of Dwayne Board, Randy Cross, Fred Dean, Kevin Fagan, Bubba Paris, John Taylor and Ronnie Lott. However, many of the players on Thursday's victorious team were hardly household names. They were there as San Francisco 49ers, united and determined to win. And win they did -- in an overtime thriller!

This YouTube is worth the visit! Like the FG by Pineiro which bounced off the goal posts and through! In Overtime!

New Beginnings

Newhouse’s rendering on “our” Ballers’ amazing and wonderful season was classic baseball journalism. How very cool that this young team could bring championship baseball back to Oaktown in only its second season. Consider also the women of the Valkyries, almost taking their league championship in their *first* season! I would say that the professional sports scene in the Bay Area remains quite healthy, now with new talent, despite the abandonment by major-league teams that will go unnamed here.

Concerning the Ballers, if MLB could ever get rid of Manfred (the bum), maybe the opportunity might exist that someday it could serve as the core of a new expansion team for Oakland. Just thinking’....

Bay Area Overview

Dusty Baker would be a perfect rehire as Giants manager.

How often do you get a future Hall of Famer?

Giants, 49ers and Warriors

Seek Respect

by Dave Newhouse

This is just one person’s view — mine — of the San Francisco Giants managerial search, though I’m sure Buster Posey isn't interested, even though he could use some advice on that matter.

So why not hire Dusty Baker?

Baker is Baseball Hall of Fame bound for his managerial achievements, and he’s also employed by the Giants in an advisory role. Thus Posey wouldn’t have too far to search for Bob Melvin’s successor.

I’m writing this unsure if Baker even wants to manage again, but the lure of managing the Giants a second time must be tempting for this Northern California resident.

Baker is the finest manager I’ve ever been around, largely because he understands and excels at all facets of the position, from game strategy to job enthusiasm to a together clubhouse.

This could be a short-term proposition, a year or two, as he grooms his successor. Who would that be? Why not hire ex-Giants Will Clark and Robby Thompson as part of his coaching staff. Both men have leadership capabilities despite different personalities.

The rest of Baker’s staff I leave to him, but there would be tremendous fan excitement regarding his managerial return.

Posey needs some excitement, because his hirings and firings haven’t flipped the franchise around. He’s bold in making changes, but did he really expect more out of Melvin’s farewell season when Posey acquisitions Willy Adames hit .225 and Rafael Devers hit .236. And Matt Chapman (.231) has yet to hit .250 in his career, despite becoming a millionaire. So how much of all this was Melvin’s fault? Zilch.

Thus the onus is on Posey to identify solid hitters, for when the season ended, Jung Hoo Lee was the team’s batting leader at .266. And Melvin was expected to make the playoffs with such anemic hitting? The players, not the manager, were at fault.

Baker brings a spark wherever he manages, including San Francisco beforehand, Baker, Roger Craig….the Giants need a cheerleader as a skipper in order to keep this franchise from sinking into the Bay.

Just when you thought the Warriors couldn't get older,

up pops Al Horford, age 39

Just when you thought the Golden State Warriors couldn’t get any older after qualifying for AARP membership, they increased their senior citizen fan club membership by acquiring Al Horford.

The Warriors already had Stephen Curry, 37, Jimmy Butler, 36, and Draymond Green, 35, under contract. But to assure their followers that they could get even older, they signed free agent Horford, 39.

Now Horford played well for the Boston Celtics through last season. He hustles despite his age, and his corner scoring hadn’t lost its touch last season. But this is a new season, and the Warriors are gambling that his shooting, plus his legs, will remain functional.

The Warriors also got younger, and better, before training camp by signing Jonathan Kuminga, 23, who has spring in his step and a variety of ways to score. He is instant offense when he hits the court, similar to the departed Andrew Wiggins.

The front office has done a marvelous job in building a new, energized roster, acquiring Horford, De’Anthony Melton and Seth Curry, Stephen’s younger brother, plus signing the invaluable Gary Payton II, who benefits the team in many ways.

And even though the Warriors are the Methuselahs of the NBA. Kuminga, Brandin Podziemski, Moses Moody, Quinten Post, Gui Santos, and Trayce Jackson-Davis are 25 and younger. They're all experienced contributors.

Bringing back Kuminga is huge, the last important piece to a post-season charge. Let’s see if Methuselah will feel rejuvenated.

Kyle Shanahan has done a remarkable coaching the 49ers this season with a roster that resembles a hospital ward

The San Francisco 49ers aren’t supposed to be making waves in the NFL, when they’ve been reported drowning because of consequential injuries.

Their remaining healthy types are above water because Kyle Shanahan is an exceptional coach, figuring out alternative measures in crisis situations.

Somehow, the 49ers are 4-1 despite a weekly injury report that seems unending. The Niners didn’t have their starting quarterback, tight end and both wide receivers when they flew to Los Angeles to take on the Rams last Thursday.

Standout defensive end Nick Bosa already had sustained a season-ending injury, adding to the 49ers’ roster woes. So how did they respond against their longtime rivals? They won 26-23 in overtime.

The 49ers made so many critical plays that either kept them in the game or decided its outcome. The Rams eschewed a game-tying field goal in the interest of bravado, feeling they could convert a 4th-and-1 situation at the Niners' five-yard line with seconds left. The Niners stuffed it, and that’s how the game ended — a serious blow to the Rams’ ego.

The Niners made long field goals when it was vital, then stole the ball away from a Ram running back just before he reached the goal line. And, finally, their backup skill performers were ripping off huge chunks of yardage against the favored Rams.

Forty-Niner heroes were aplenty on both sides of the ball, and in the kicking game. But you couldn't overlook Christtian McCaffrey’s wide-ranging impact on the offense. Or quarterback Mac Jones’ courageous dominance despite a near physical breakdown.

Could Brock Purdy been any more effective for the 49ers than Jones? That’s a story for another time, but perhaps last Thursday was the catalyst for a storybook season.

And, lastly, how Shanahan has held it all together in spite of his unsightly weekly injury report could turn into Coach of the Year stuff.

A beautiful homecoming night started in the Berkeley Hills as the Golden Bears jumped out early to a 14-0 lead. They would unfortunately relinquish the lead going into halftime, 21-31, as the Blue Devils defense would snag four interceptions on their way to a final 45-21 score. Giants not interested in Bochy reunion for manager job

by Maria Guardado

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants’ managerial search just got underway, but one big name is already off the board for president of baseball operations Buster Posey.

Posey said Wednesday that he doesn’t view his longtime manager and franchise icon Bruce Bochy as a candidate to replace Bob Melvin, who was fired on Monday after two seasons at the helm of the Giants.

Bochy, who managed Posey for 11 of his 12 seasons in the big leagues and helped bring three World Series titles to San Francisco in 2010, ‘12 and ‘14, was instantly linked to the Giants after the Rangers announced that they “mutually agreed” to end the 70-year-old skipper’s tenure in Texas on Monday.

Posey said he spoke with Bochy a couple of days ago and offered him a chance to return to the Giants in some capacity, just not as the club’s new manager.

Athletics

Nick Kurtz crushes a two-run home run to left-center field, cutting the Athletics' deficit to 9-2 in the eighth inning

Kurtz HRs his way into history to cap incredible rookie season

Athletics slugger just 8th player since 1901 to post an OPS over 1.000 (min. 400 PAs)

Martin Gallegos

21, 2025 · 0:1s in the 3rd inning

WEST SACRAMENTO -- One day before Sunday’s season finale, Athletics manager Mark Kotsay was asked about the prospect of Nick Kurtz potentially finishing with a 1.000 OPS as a rookie, a feat that has only been accomplished by a handful of superstars and Hall of Famers over the past 124 years.

"If you’re in that company, you’re pretty special,” Kotsay said. “For Nick, there’s nothing I don’t think he can’t do. If he put a cape on, I bet you he could fly right now.”

Just call him Superman.

When Kurtz stepped to the plate for the Athletics in the eighth inning of Sunday’s 9-2 loss to the Royals, everyone inside the A’s dugout -- Kotsay included -- knew Kurtz needed a home run to get his season OPS over 1.000.

On the second pitch he saw from left-hander Sam Long, Kurtz demolished a sinker left over the zone. In the final at-bat of what has been nothing short of a spectacular first season in the big leagues, Kurtz unleashed his majestic power one last time for his 36th homer of the year and etched his name in baseball history as just the eighth player to post an OPS over 1.000 (min. 400 plate appearances) since 1901.

Earthquakes 1, Vancouver Whitecaps FC 4

San Jose still in playoff contention despite result but will need some help in table; Quakes return home Oct. 18 to face

Austin FC on MLS Decision Day

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — The San Jose Earthquakes fell to Vancouver Whitecaps FC 4-1 in Major League Soccer regular-season action Sunday afternoon at BC Place.

The Earthquakes almost took an early lead in minute seven when Josef Martínez headed a corner kick that was cleared off the line by the Vancouver back line. The hosts nearly struck first four minutes later, but Thomas Müller’s left-footed attempt from the top of the box was batted away by Daniel. In the 29th minute, the ‘Caps put another shot on goal off a dangerous corner kick but Daniel was in perfect position to stop it.

Vancouver got the breakthrough in minute 39 when Rayan Elloumi finished Sebastian Berhalter’s free kick from the left wing to make it 1-0 heading into intermission. In the second half, the hosts took control. Thomas Müller took an Ali Ahmed feed at the top of the box and scored from long distance in the 57th minute to double the advantage. Sebastian Berhalter made it 3-0 in minute 74 with another deep shot, this time a few feet behind the edge of the box.

Beau Leroux pulled one back for San Jose with a howitzer-like blast from well behind the box in minute 89 to make it 3-1, but Berhalter added a second goal in the second minute of stoppage time for the final margin.

Despite the loss, San Jose remains in playoff contention heading into the season finale at PayPal Park on Saturday, Oct. 18, against Austin FC. Kickoff will take place at 6 p.m. PT and will be broadcast globally via MLS Season Pass on Apple TV (English/Spanish), as well as via local radio on KSFO 810 AM (English) and KZSF 1370 AM (Spanish).

Roots Suffer Midweek Defeat

in El Paso 3-1

El Paso opened the scoring early, with Amando Moreno slotting home a cross in the first minute to give the home side a 1-0 lead.

The hosts then doubled their lead inside five minutes, as a deflected shot off the foot of Eric Calvillo found the back of the net to make it 2-0 in favor of El Paso.

Oakland began to find their footing after the slow start, but the score remained 2-0 at halftime.

Roots came out of the half with two changes, bringing in Danny Trejo and Danny Gomez to try to turn the match.

Despite the subs, El Paso extended their lead to 3-0 with a bicycle kick and a second goal from Amando Moreno.

Oakland fought till the end and found one goal back in the 90th minute through Peter Wilson as the game ended 3-1 in favor of El Paso.

Roots return home for their next action as they host Hartford Athletic on Tuesday October 7th at 7PM PT.

Bay FC 1

Portland Thorns 2

Providence Park, Rose City, OR

Saturday, October 4, 2025

Bay FC suffered a 2-1 loss to the Portland Thorns on Saturday, October 4, at Providence Park in Rose City. Bay FC rookie midfielder Taylor Huff scored the game’s first goal, a left-footed strike from the top of the box off an assist from Karlie Lema in the 36th minute. Moments later Alyssa Malonson nearly gave Bay a 2-0 advantage, but a diving save by Portland goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold kept it a one-goal game. Although Bay FC controlled the action early and went into halftime with the advantage, Portland seized momentum in the second half and got two goals from Olivia Moultrie, the second on a free kick in the 69th minute that wrapped around Bay’s defensive wall before finding the back of the net. With the loss, Bay FC falls to 4W-7D-12L on the season and is mathematically eliminated from reaching

the NWSL postseason.

Newsletter, Image, Likeness Vol. 152: The SAFE Act is Another Federal NIL Bill Destined To Fail

by Darren Heitner, Esq.

Founder of Heitnerlegal -- Sports, Entertainment, Trademarks, Copyrights, Business, Litigation, Arbitration

The Weekly Longer NIL Thought

Here we go again.

This week, Senate Commerce ranking member Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), along with Senators Cory Booker and Richard Blumenthal, introduced the Student Athlete Fairness and Enforcement Act (the SAFE Act). It's the latest attempt by Congress to federalize NIL regulation, and just like its predecessors, it's dead on arrival.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. We don't need federal NIL legislation. The market is working. Athletes are getting paid. Yes, there are issues with collectives operating in gray areas (because schools will continue to find any competitive advantage in recruiting wars), and yes, the transfer portal has created instability (because "leaders" refuse to consider that restrictions on movement require buy-in from those they intend to restrict). But federal legislation isn't the solution to problems that can be addressed through existing antitrust enforcement and market forces.

To its credit, the SAFE Act does include some sensible provisions:

  • Extended scholarship guarantees: Schools must continue providing grant-in-aid covering tuition, books, and fees for up to 10 academic years or until an undergraduate degree is earned—whichever comes first.
  • Post-eligibility medical coverage: Five years of coverage for injuries or conditions incurred through sport participation.
  • International athlete clarity: Finally, someone included a provision addressing the visa and employment authorization concerns that have plagued international athletes trying to engage in NIL deals. This is genuinely needed and would clear up significant confusion.
