San Francisco
49ers 15,
Houston Texans 26
| | | |
The 49ers played a dismal 1st half, whereas Houston moved with impunity from their first possession which went for 57 yards on 15 plays and a FG (0-3 Houston). SF punted, and on their second possession had four plays for 18 yards, while Houston had 23 plays for 138 yards. Houston's 34-yard FG to start the 2nd quarter made it 0-6, Houston. A 45-yard pass from Stroud to Noll and a TD pass to an uncovered Higgins made it 0-13, Houston. "Warneritis" had set in. SF punted after three plays and the Texans clicked on another FG, 0-16. Fortunately, Brian Robinson Jr. returned the kickoff to the 50, and with a tacked-on face-mask penalty and a pass to Kendrick Bourne, it was time to celebrate National Tight Ends Day with its founder, George Kittle, with a touchdown pass. 7-16 Houston at halftime. It could have been worse.
And it was: SF started the 3rd Q. on the 40 after a poor Houston kick but went 3 and out. After a series of passes, Stroud found Hutchinson for a TD, 7-23. On their best drive, with McCaffery runs and passes and after a sack, Mac Jones found Jake Tonges for a TD, 13-23. A two-point conversion made it 15-23, -- 12 plays, 76 yards. The 4th Q. began with SF still unable to stop the run and a Texans FG made it 15-26. After a Jones sack, a Houston interception in the end zone ended in the 49ers' first loss in Houston since 2009. Total yards were 276 for SF, and 474 for Houston. Offense, Defense and special teams all played below expectations, and injuries continue to haunt the San Francisco 49ers. Rookie Upton Stout played well for SF, as did Kalia Davis early in the game. Jones was under constant pressure and CMC had few opportunities to shine. Time to figure it out, Coach!

Golden State Warriors --
Recap:
Three Games In
| | | |
On Tuesday, 10/21, the Warriors beat the Lakers, 119-109. On Thursday, 10/23, the Dubs beat Denver, 137-131 in O/T. On Friday, after the trip to Portland on 10/24, they were beaten by the Trail Blazers, 139-119.
Why? A) Exhaustion B) Portland had, overnight, become a brand new team, excited to play basketball after the media frenzy around Basketball, Gambling and their coach's alleged involvement. They obviously like their replacement coach, Tiago Splitter, but it was the psychological renaissance which fueled their victory. The latter factor was studiously avoided by regular announcers Fitz and Kelenna, probably under orders, but make no mistake, the Trail Blazers were fresh and all smiles, and who can blame them?
The Warriors? They are, as J.J. Walker would say, DYN-O-MITE!
Good Times ahead for the Warriors!

Posey Making Bold Move
by Bruce Macgowan
|
| |
“In Buster We Trust.”
That’s the prevailing feeling around the San Francisco Giants organization these days as everyone seems confident that the Giants President of Baseball Operations made the right move when naming University of Tennessee head baseball coach Tony Vitello the Giants’ new skipper.
Much has been made about the fact that Vitello is only the second manager to ever make the jump from the college ranks to the Major Leagues, but Dick Howser, who took over the Yanks’ managing job in 1980 had been a big league infielder as well as a coach. Vitello has never played or coached in professional baseball.
Why did Buster Posey make such a bold move? Perhaps this is the kind of shakeup this club needs. After all, the Giants have been a mediocre, underachieving team four years running, and fans are starting to grumble.
As far as his success on the college level, Vitello had a glittering record with the Vols. When he arrived in Knoxville, Tennessee hadn’t made the NCAA Tournament since 2005 and had only been to the college World Series four times in school history. But Vitello, who according to players is a high energy, passionate leader turned the Volunteers’ fortunes around in his second year, guiding them to the NCAA Tournament. Tennessee’s baseball program took off from there, with five trips to the Super Regionals, three appearances in the College World Series and finally, an NCAA Title in 2024.
Posey had several guys on his radar including former big league catcher Todd Hundley, but Vitello intrigued him almost from the beginning. According to a Giants’ insider, Posey knew he had his guy within just a few minutes of his formal interview with Vitello.
Interestingly enough, the Giants have four former Volunteers in their system; outfielder Drew Gilbert, pitcher Blake Tidwell, and infielders Gavin Kilen and Maui Ahuna. Fans got a preview of what Gilbert might bring to the table next season when the super enthusiastic rookie opened eyes with his hustle and exuberance after the Giants got him and his former teammate Tidwell in the Tyler Rogers trade to the Mets.
It’s probable that Posey spoke with Gilbert, or perhaps Tidwell or one of the other former Vols’ players to get a better read on what Vitello is all about.
After having an analytics-driven but somewhat aloof manager in Gabe Kapler, followed by the sometimes too-mellow Bob Melvin who was unable to jolt the Giants out of their second half funk this past season, Vitello may be just tonic for what ails the Giants.
Focused, loyal, driven and innovative are all words that those who know Tony Vitello have used to describe some of his strengths. Perhaps the biggest question regarding Vitello is how well he will handle communications between himself and veteran professional players such as Rafael Devers, Logan Webb and Matt Chapman. After dealing with fresh faced, impressionable young college kids it will be an adjustment, and hopefully a smooth one.
We’ll learn a lot more about the 47-year-old Vitello later this week when Posey introduces him in a media press conference.

Ruth Bows
To Ohtani's Greatness
by Dave Newhouse
| | The bartender shouts "last call" at The Heavenly Pub. For it’s late afternoon, Hospital Hour, time to close up before inebriated bar patrons in golf carts collide in the clouds. But, just then, a portly regular bursts through the front door. | |
Babe Ruth: “Hiya, hiya, hiya, Mr. Perfecto. Am I too late for a libation? The Bambino has no closing time for his thirst.”
Don Larsen: “Don’t call me Mr. Perfecto. You know how I hate that name. And since I’m the bartender here, why should I stay open for you?”
Ruth: “Wait until I tell you about what just happened on Earth. Somebody just surpassed our baseball accomplishments, and everybody else’s achievements, too.”
Larsen: “What are you talking about? I pitched the only perfect game in World Series history. You pointed to the fence and then hit a World Series home run. How do you top those milestones?”
Ruth: “That’s what I’m talking about. Hey, where is my beer? Anyway, this somebody has combined hitting and pitching like nobody’s ever seen before, topping even me, The Bambino, in that regard.”
| | |
Larsen: “How do you knows all this? It’s news to me.”
Ruth: “I saw it myself on ESPN-HTV, you know, heavenly television. That Japanese fella put me to shame.”
Larsen: “Here’s your beer. Hey, drink more slowly, we’re closing. Japanese, you say? What’s his name?”
Ruth: “The Bambino was no spelling champion, but let me give it a try. Something like ’Sew Hay O’Tummy.’”
Larsen: “Something just flashed on TV, baseball highlights. It’s Shohei Ohtani. Wow, that’s some home run he belted.”
Ruth: “He hit three like that in the same game, gape-measured shots for those Brooklyn, er, Los Angeles Dodgers.”
Larsen: “You mean tape-measured shots, oh scholarly Sultan of Swat.”
Ruth: “That’s not all, Mr. Perfecto. He also pitched that same day against Milwaukee, starting off the game by striking out the side. He then led off at bat and whacked a pitch deep into the bleachers. What human does that?”
Larsen: “Drum roll. Not even the Babe?”
Ruth: “OK, I can take that, but he pitched six innings of scoreless baseball, giving up just two hits, striking out 10, and landing the Dodgers in the World Series. I never came close to all that.”
| |
Larsen: “Don’t be too hard on yourself. Nobody else has come close to what Ohtani did in the history of the game, dating back to the 1800s.”
Ruth: "I pitched and hit at the same time myself, but nothing like O’Tummy. I do have career statistics that get mentioned, but that kid is making me a baseball after-thought.”
Larsen: “It’s Ohtani, but, c'mon, you’re a baseball icon. All I ever did was pitch that perfect game in the World Series.”
Ruth: “Yet that made you the one and only Mr. Perfecto."
Larsen: “There you go again, but I’ll let it pass this time. I know you mean well.”
Ruth: “Well, then, can I get another beer? I’m as dry as a day game in Boston in July.”
Larsen: OK, one more, but make it fast. The World Series is about to start, and you know who’s pitching for the Dodgers?”
Ruth: “O’Tummy, who else? But, you know, I’d sure like to take some whacks against him.”
Larsen: “I’m not sure, Babe, if he’d be up for that.”
Ruth: “Thanks, Don. Your bar tip just grew."

Giants name Vols coach Vitello manager in unprecedented hire
by Brian Murphy
The Giants finalized a deal to make Tony Vitello their next manager on Wednesday afternoon.
The 47-year-old Vitello, who had been the head coach at the University of Tennessee since the 2018 season, becomes the first college coach to move directly to MLB manager without previous professional coaching experience.
"I'm incredibly honored and grateful for this opportunity," Vitello said in a statement. "I'm excited to lead this group of players and represent the San Francisco Giants. I can't wait to get started and work to establish a culture that makes Giants faithful proud."

Ballers Fam,
We still see that championship glow on you. Don’t worry, we’re still beaming, too.
The historic 73-win season, the win-or-go-home 3 straight wins in the Championship Round in Oakland, the Rally at City Hall, the Parade, the Party at Prescott Market, you deserved all of it and we are so proud of being able to deliver.
So what’s next?
We’re in the lab maniacally devising our plan to run it back in 2026. But first, Championship Bling! Oakland Ballers season ticket holders will be the first to get these rings. Go grab your season tix now so that you can keep your favorite seat next season.
| | You Can Never Take A Baller Out The Bay | | |
Free Agency is open and our championship front office is wasting no time. So far, we’ve re-signed starting pitcher Gabe Tanner, who went 11-0 counting the postseason. We also inked fan favorite Esai Santos, who came up clutch all season long. And just this week, the speedy and powerful outfielder T.J. McKenzie, who was a late-season addition, decided he wants to run it back. Assistant GM Tyler Petersen and VP of Communications and Fan Entertainment Casey Pratt broke down all the baseball moves here.

Roots Shine in 2025 Season Finale, Defeat Lexington SC 3-0 at Home
It was a golden finish for Roots in 2025, who despite coming into the match having been eliminated from playoff contention put together one of their most complete performances of the entire season, defeating Lexington SC by a final score of 3-0 at the Oakland Coliseum on Saturday night.
Lexington needed this game. With a win they would have punched their ticket to the 2025 USL Championship playoffs. But Oakland had other plans for the visitors.
Roots weathered an early storm from Lexington, as the early portion of the match saw them deploy an aggressive high press that hemmed Oakland into their own defensive third. But Roots defenders did a good job of disallowing Lexington the ability to turn this pressure into a real scoring treats.
In the 19th minute of the match, Oakland opened the scoring in historic fashion when Bobosi Byaruhanga made a furious run up the right wing to keep play alive before sending a cross to Wolfgang Prentice just outside the top of the box. Prentice chipped the ball past a defender finding Peter Wilson, who made an incredible move t shake a defender before depositing the ball just inside the right post to give Roots a 1-0 lead.
The goal represented Wilson's 18th of the regular season, and earned him the 2025 USL Championship Golden Boot award. It was also his 8th consecutive match with a goal, tying him with Hadji Barry for the all-time league record. As if that weren't enough, the goal also pushed Wilson to 22 goal contributions n 2025, passing Ottar Magnus Karlsson to become the all-time single-season club leader.
Despite the desperation from Lexington following the goal, Roots kept their foot on the gas, limiting opposition scoring opportunities, and continuing to find attacking pressure of their own.
Woofgang Prentice scored one of his own to push Lexington's season to the brink with only moments remaining in the match when Camden Riley played a cross into the box, finding Prentice all alone with time to take a touch before putting a shot off the keepers gloves and into the twine to make it 2-0 Oakland in the 82nd minute.
Roots put the game to bed in the 89th minute, scoring their third of the match when Peter Wilson capped off an otherworldly season by earning an assist on what turned out to be his very last play of 2025, teeing up Faysal Bettache for his first goal of the year at the death to bring the score to 3-0.
While Oakland's season is over, the club delivered one of the most exciting matches in club history to send 2025 out with a bang.

Newsletter, Image, Likeness Vol. 155: Stop Wasting Resources on the SCORE Act
| | |
by Darren Heitner, Esq.
Founder of Heitnerlegal -- Sports, Entertainment, Trademarks, Copyrights, Business, Litigation, Arbitration
The Weekly Longer NIL Thought
| | |
On October 21, Senators Maria Cantwell, Cory Booker, and Richard Blumenthal hosted a virtual conference to discuss what they framed as defending athletes' rights under attack from the SCORE Act (see Vol. 149: The SCORE Act Needs Surgery, Not Speed). The message from Senate Democrats was unequivocal: the Republican-backed legislation isn't just flawed. It's DOA in the Senate.
Senator Richard Blumenthal delivered the reality check that should end this charade: "In the Senate, you need 60 votes. There has to be (bi-partisan) support." He went further, revealing that conversations with Senator Ted Cruz "quite frankly... made no headway." When asked about the chances of passing the SCORE Act before midterms, Blumenthal's answer was simple: "None." Even the chances of passing the Democrats' alternative SAFE Act? (see Vol. 152: The SAFE Act Is Another Federal NIL Bill Destined To Fail) "Possible, but uphill."
Translation: We're watching a performance. Resources are being burned on legislation that won't become law.
Senator Cantwell cut through the marketing speak with precision. She said, "The SCORE Act is not what we think it is. It's not the solution for the athlete. There's a lot of people scoring. Two big divisions and their commissioners, they're scoring. The NCAA, they're scoring. Apparently private equity is scoring. But who's not scoring is the athletes."
She's absolutely right. The SCORE Act is a wish list drafted by the NCAA and Power conference commissioners who spent many millions of dollars lobbying for legislation that would hand them unprecedented antitrust immunity, which is the very immunity the Supreme Court unanimously rejected in 2021 in NCAA v. Alston. Justice Brett Kavanaugh wrote then that "Nowhere else in America can businesses get away with agreeing not to pay their workers a fair market rate." The SCORE Act would make the NCAA the exception to that rule.
