Dear Friends,
I know we like to think of the beginning of a new year as a chance to start fresh, but sometimes there are issues or circumstances that we can’t bend to fit into the ways we want to see or experience our lives. We’re definitely in the middle of one of those with the current wave of the COVID pandemic.
Hopefully you’ve already received an update from the SVPC Reopening Committee about some of the ongoing worship protocol adaptations the group feels are necessary, along with some stronger guidance about how we can keep one another safe as the latest, more virulent strain of the virus continues to impact our community’s health. You can also see the current edits to the reopening guidelines here.
We’re all longing for an end to this pandemic. I look forward to a day when we won’t need to have a “Reopening Committee” anymore. But we’re not close to that time yet — there’s still a lot of work to be done to work for health and wholeness in our community. I am grateful that you are all remaining careful and caring in dealing with this struggle we share.
Especially over the next few weeks — at least until we can have a better perspective on how the current massive spike in cases may (or may not) lead to an increase in hospitalizations and deaths — I want to sincerely urge you to take masking in our public gatherings very seriously (using medical-grade, N95, or KN95 masks whenever possible) and to stay home from participating in any in-person Sunnyvale Pres gatherings if you have recently traveled, have been exposed, are awaiting test results, or have any symptoms of illness such as a fever or cough/congestion. It is not safe to assume it’s “just a cold.”
Please know that I am making this appeal out of a sense of love for you all and for our broader community. We need to make it through these present challenges together.
Grateful for our community of caring,

Dear Friends,
I want to echo Pastor Hardy in his gratitude for your ongoing vigilance and his plea for us all to take appropriate precautions for the sake of our own health and that of those around us. I totally get that every time it feels we’re turning a corner, things get complicated again. We long for, if not a return to normal, at least a new and consistent normal. But that time has not yet arrived.
It is a joy to worship together in the sanctuary, but I also love interacting with one another in the Facebook chat during worship. I feel closeness rather than distance in the chat and am grateful for the ways it allows us to respond, connect, care, and pray for one another. It has added a richness to our time together.
If for any reason you feel uncomfortable coming to worship in person, please join us online. And if you’re wanting to connect a bit more, join us for the online coffee (half) hour on Sundays. It’s not long, but it gives us a time to share and enjoy a bit more connection after our time of shared worship.
I look forward to seeing you on Sunday — however you choose to join.
See you soon,

Keeping Our Community Safe —
Updated COVID Prevention Measures
The church recently sent a detailed email with updated information from the Reopening Committee about the recent surge in Omicron and the safety measures we are taking. Until it is deemed safe, we will refrain from singing or playing wind instruments during in-person worship. The committee also suggests that people who have not already done so to please prayerfully consider getting vaccinated. Masking is still required at all in-person gatherings—but we encourage use of N95/KN95 masks instead of cloth masks, per CDC recommendations. Finally, if you have been exposed or have any symptoms please stay home and do not attend in-person worship or other events. We appreciate everyone’s diligence in keeping each other safe! You can read the letter here. If you have any questions or feedback for the Reopening Committee, please contact Carol Heath.

Join us for Black History Month: A Case for Reparations
Wednesdays in February • 7–8:30 p.m. • Over Zoom • Register

|
|
Led by Stephanie Lutz Allen, each session will involve discussing the materials and then participating in a creative activity. While “reparations” can be a loaded word, you’re invited to listen to these voices as we explore together. The first session will be a hybrid meeting (in-person or over Zoom) and the remaining three sessions will meet over Zoom. Register here for more information and the Zoom link.

CARAVAN 2022
In July, SVPC Youth ministry will head to the Southside of Chicago, Illinois to learn from community members about the effects of segregation and institutionalized racist city policies that have kept Chicago as one of the most segregated cities in the country. We hope to return with concrete tools to address our own version of housing issues here in the Bay Area so we have eyes to see the ways we segregate our lives from each other each day. Beth Pole Crosses the Line — Again
You can, too. The Sunday that Beth Pole (pictured with Carol Heath) purchased Be the Gift by Ann Voskamp from the Book Sale Cart, she crossed the line, going from book seller to book buyer. Book Sale Ministry team volunteers face this temptation every Sunday in Trinity Court.
|
|
The team invites you, too, to be both a book seller and buyer and succumb to the temptation of books. (Not all temptations are to be resisted!) Talk to any team member.
In Be the Gift, Voskamp suggests that even in our brokenness, God can use us to be the gift to others that mends our own life. The book presents quotations, inspirational verses, photos by Voskamp, and 60 ideas for blessing others.
“No amount of regret changes the past. No amount of anxiety changes the future. Any amount of gratitude changes the present,” says Voskamp.
