Dear Friends,
Each year during February our whole nation marks Black History Month. Since 2004 our whole PC(USA) national community has established a commitment to doing more than just learning or thinking about that history — we’ve called on our governing bodies and congregations to engage with the hard idea of reparations.
That’s one of the reasons that I am grateful that members of our community are digging deep into a conversation about reparations — what the concept is and what it has to do with us — through a class that is being led by Rev. Stephanie Lutz-Allen. You can see the “toolkit” of materials they are using here.
When we are willing to learn about Black history in our country, it is almost certain that we will begin to learn truths that we had not previously known, and many of these truths will make us uncomfortable about our past and about how we are living our lives now. In an article about reparations from a couple of years back, a former colleague from the Atlanta area, Rev. Nibs Stroupe, wrote, “The consideration of reparations requires us to swim against the stream of the idea of individual achievement. This idea emphasizes that if one has ‘stuff,’ it’s because they’ve worked hard and earned it, while if someone does not have ‘stuff,’ it’s because they’ve been irresponsible and idle.” Our Protestant work ethic and our American capitalist sensibilities are called into question all at once. You can read more of Nibs’ reflections here.
As we continue through this month and as we keep moving forward in learning and having our perspectives transformed as a community, I hope that the gift of understanding our shared history through the experience of Black Americans and the Spirit’s guidance in discussions around ideas like reparations will help to lead us to new places where we can more fully embody the love, peace, and justice of God.
Faithfully,

Dear Friends,
I love that we are people of the Book. On Sundays we have been following the lectionary (prescribed scripture readings for each day) through the book of I Corinthians. When Hardy preached on I Corinthians 13, he talked about love being innately tied to action. The deacons and I have been looking at the book of James which also calls us to live out our faith in very practical ways that allow all — including the disenfranchised — to experience care and respect.
I wonder what other ways you find to immerse yourself or even to just dip your toe into scripture. If you don’t already have a practice that works for you, I’ll just suggest a couple. You can go daily to d365.org for a brief online devotional, or sacredspace.ie for one that is just a tad longer and available in numerous languages. If you’re someone who finds podcasts more accessible, you might like to download the Pray As You Go app.
There are many ways to feed our hearts and spirits, so I’m not saying these are the only or the best. I just think that if you’re looking for a place to start a habit of prayer and reflection, these are some good places to try out.
I look forward to worshiping with you soon,
Peace,

A Consummate Volunteer
Mission & Service Volunteer Spotlight:
Ralph Babcock
Mission & Service recognizes that volunteering is love in action. “When asked to volunteer, think about it, pray about it, try to fully understand your commitment, and try to say yes.”
Ralph Babcock shared this wisdom when asked about his role volunteering with Friends for Life (FFL), a group that provides entertainment and support for the senior residents at Life’s Garden in Sunnyvale.
One of several Sunnyvale Pres members who volunteer there, Ralph is the FFL treasurer. He also assists with the gift packages FFL delivers every other month to the 251 residents. In the fall, he purchased enough mini-pumpkins for every resident.
You may recognize Ralph as the person who recruited coffee servers in the pre-pandemic days when coffee and juice were served in Trinity Court. He has also been a deacon and an elder, helped build a house on a CARAVAN trip, and frequently helped with our church picnic.
Thank you, Ralph!

Beware of email scams pretending to be from pastors or church staff!
Occasionally members of the congregation receive emails pretending to be from Pastor Hardy or other staff members. The emails are short and friendly—“hi, how’s your day going,” or “can I ask a favor”—in hopes the recipient will engage in dialogue, after which the scammer states that the pastor or the church needs money or gift cards. The sender’s name may appear as Hardy or someone else in your address book, but if the email address is not from someone @sunnyvalepres.com, it’s definitely fake.
Please know that no pastors or church staff will ever contact you in this manner to ask for money, gift cards, credit card numbers, or anything else. All legitimate church expenditures need to go through a staff or ministry area approval process. If you receive a suspicious email, please mark it as spam and delete it.

Last Chance to Sign Up for CARAVAN!
Join Youth ministry from July 16–24 for CARAVAN 2022. We will head to the Southside of Chicago, Illinois to learn from community members about the effects of segregation and institutionalized racist city policies that have kept Chicago as one of the most segregated cities in the country. We hope to return with concrete tools to address our own housing issues here in the Bay Area so that we have eyes to see the ways we segregate our lives from each other each day. Register here by February 13!

Special Ash Wednesday LOGOS (but open to all children!)
Wednesday, March 2 • 5:30–6:30 p.m.
LOGOS is inviting all of the children at Sunnyvale Pres to a special Ash Wednesday event! Your children will learn about Ash Wednesday — why we celebrate it, what it represents, and some special parts of the worship service that they should look out for.
Afterward, join us for a family pizza picnic party on the grassy area behind the gym. Bring your own picnic blanket and we’ll provide the pizza! Families are encouraged to join the 7:30 p.m. Ash Wednesday service in the sanctuary after the picnic.
If you are not registered for LOGOS and want to join this special event, please fill out this form so that we know how much pizza to order. We ask that each family outside of LOGOS contribute $5 per person for dinner to help with food costs.

Women’s Retreat: Cultivating Love
with speaker Annanda Barclay
Saturday, March 12 • 9:30–4:30
All women are invited! Join us as we find unique ways to connect during the day including music, a speaker, small groups, and afternoon activity groups that will include both online and in-person options. We will offer breaks and movement throughout the day to help avoid screen fatigue. Before we join into activity groups, we will have a short worship service and communion. Retreat cost will be just $10 to go toward our speaker’s honoraria.
Annanda (she/her/hers) is the pastor of Mission Bay Community Church in San Francisco. She is also a student chaplain at Stanford Hospital pursuing a full-time career in chaplaincy. Annanda seeks to create professional spaces that facilitate connections to the sacred through experiential education, network building, and spiritual care.
When not on the clock, Annanda enjoys nerding out on artificial intelligence, eco-housing, concerts, film, food, exploring outdoors, and quality time with friends, family, and her beloved dog, Wes. She also enjoys home-brewing craft beer and learning urban beekeeping.

Seven Habits to Enhance Christian Living
Habit #2: Love
by Mary Boyle,
Book Sale Ministry Team Volunteer
As the beneficiaries of God’s greatest gift, love, we are instructed to love God and love one another.
“... when we die, God’s not going to say, ‘[your name], what did you do for a living? How much money did you make? How many houses did you have?’ God is only going to ask us two questions: ‘Did you love Me?’ and ‘Did you love your neighbor?’ And we can imagine [name] will answer truthfully, saying, ‘Yes, Lord, You know I loved You. You know I loved my neighbor.’ And then God will say, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. Now enter into the kingdom of heaven.’” —These Precious Days by Ann Patchett
Sunday Book Sale Cart books about love include The Four Loves by C.S. Lewis, God Loves You by the Berenstains, and versions of Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman.
Click here to listen to Pastor Hardy Kim’s 1-30-22 sermon “Love IS Action.” (The sermon begins at timestamp 47:57.)
