Note from Pastor Hardy
Dear Friends,

For a long time we have thought of ourselves here at Sunnyvale Presbyterian Church as a people rooted in a knowledge of Christ and His life, while also knowing that our connection to Him leads us to reach out to others in love. There are always great ways for us to experience both of these things through the worship, programs, fellowship, and mission work of our congregation. There are two particular instances of this that are happening over the next couple of weeks that I want to lift up to you.

On Sunday, November 20, we are going to be having a special worship service. It will be the last “Intersections” worship. Many folks who have been integral to that community will be present on that day and have prepared memories to share. I hope you will be with us as we share our sadness that something so good is ending, our thanksgiving that God has blessed us through Intersections, and our shared excitement for new forms of contemporary worship and praise. We will also have lunch together in the gym after service. I look forward to seeing you all there!

And, before that, on November 15 (a Tuesday evening), our community has been invited to join together with Sunnyvale residents from all different faiths and walks of life in a rally to stand “United Against Hate.” This is a chance for us to show that we care about all of our siblings in the community around us, and that through us Christ’s love is ready to overcome the power of hate and bigotry in the world. You can find details about the event and how to participate here.

I am grateful to be a part of a community that doesn’t just seek to know God’s love for its own members, but that also seeks to be God’s love made real for others in the world. Let’s share that love in our worship and in our city and beyond!

Faithfully,
News from Pastor Karin
Dear Friends,

On Tuesday, program staff spent the day in the youth room upstairs in the Phoenix Center, thinking together about our church and ministry. After a brief check-in, we spent some time reflecting on scripture together. Then we continued on to consider ministry and the annual calendar. It was a wonderfully intentional and grounding experience.

While it can be hard to set regular day-to-day life aside, we are so grateful for this time to pull back for a day, reflect on ministry, and connect with one another. And to do so in person rather than over Zoom was a joy!

I am grateful for thoughtful colleagues and a thoughtful congregation. As we move forward in ministry together, know that we are deeply grateful for you!

Peace,
Updating our Sunday
Styles of Worship

As we lovingly say good-bye on November 20 to Intersections, our contemporary style of worship, we will be shifting how worship styles will work on Sundays moving forward. During Advent (November 27 through Christmas), we will have traditional worship each week, featuring music from the organ and the chancel choir. It will be lovely to sing and hear traditional Advent and Christmas music.

Beginning in January, we will have traditional worship on the 1st, 2nd and (when available) 5th Sundays of the month. The 3rd Sunday will feature music from the Choir of Bells and special musicians. The 4th Sunday of each month will feature contemplative worship in the style of Early Light including Taize-style music.

We hope you will join us in-person or online for these Sunday morning services, as well as special worship experiences during this season including the Longest Night service (December 14) and our Christmas Eve candlelight services (family-friendly at 5 pm and traditional at 8:30 pm, with Choir of Bells prelude at 8 pm).
The Future of Contemporary Worship at Sunnyvale Pres
The Progressive Contemporary Worship Project
Dynamic, meaningful, engaging, and welcoming worship has long been a foundation for our life together at Sunnyvale Presbyterian. Together, we have been enriched by practicing different styles of worship. The end of Intersections is not the end of contemporary worship here. As with our faith, the close of something is not the end of the story! God is always bringing new life where we are feeling worn out or weighed down.

That same Spirit that brought Intersections into being is now doing a new thing. Though the every-week-on-Sunday rhythm is no longer sustainable, we have an exciting opportunity to work on learning and creating music, prayers, and other resources for worship that are more in line with our community’s desire to be a fully welcoming and inclusive place for all people. Many of the existing songs and worship resources are stuck in old customs that do not fully value or include the perspectives of women, queer folks, and people of color. Part of our new Progressive Contemporary Worship Project’s efforts will be to find and create worship resources that reflect the kind of community we are, and who God is calling us to be.

Even as we celebrate the gifts received through Intersections, and as we share our sadness at its ending, we look forward in hope to new forms of contemporary worship that will continue to strengthen our community. This Progressive Contemporary Worship Project is very much an open experiment. It will grow and change as we are all led by God’s Spirit. And we need you all to participate in helping us invite that Spirit in, help us hear what God is saying, and to help us make newly joyful praise.

Beginning in the new year, we will meet a couple Wednesday evenings per month. The gatherings will be informal, and we invite the participation and input of all who show up and want to share. Stay tuned for news about this project as we settle on more specifics – and plan to be a part of this new thing that God is doing in our midst!

Friends for Life: New Beginnings & Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteers Needed on Saturday, December 3 • 2–4 pm • Sign up

Friends for Life (FFL) has been energized by its post-COVID return to hosting onsite activities for the approximately 250 senior residents of Life’s Garden in Sunnyvale. On Saturday, December 3, from 2–4 pm, FFL is hosting its festive Christmas Tea (for residents only) with entertainment by the renowned Madrigal Singers from Mountain View High School. Please contact friendsforlifesunnyvale@gmail.com if you can help with serving — and of course stay to hear the Madrigals.

Life’s Garden, an independently-operated nonprofit senior housing complex that opened in 1976, was built through the efforts of Sunnyvale Pres. The Friends for Life volunteer organization was founded to support the residents, and for many years was run solely by dedicated volunteers from Sunnyvale Pres.

New California Law on Child Abuse Prevention and Reporting
Safe Church Update

In January 2022, California Assembly Bill 506 set new requirements for “youth organizations” (including churches) to establish policies to prevent child abuse and assault.

Thankfully, we were already in compliance with most of the new requirements due to our Safe Church program. The main change for us is that all staff of youth organizations are now considered “mandated reporters,” which means they are required by law to report any observed or suspected child abuse to the authorities. (This has already been the case for teachers, licensed child care providers, health care workers, and other professionals for many years.)

The law requires all mandated reporters to complete a state-approved mandated reporter training, and volunteers over the age of 18 who are in contact with minors must complete a training on prevention and reporting. This mandated reporter training is in addition to the Safe Church training required of SVPC staff, leaders, and volunteers working with children and youth. In addition, the PC(USA) Book of Order designates all deacons and elders over the age of 18 as mandated reporters, so they are being asked to complete the training as well.

Sunnyvale Pres staff, volunteers, and leaders have been notified of this change and are now in the process of completing the required trainings, which we believe will further strengthen our Safe Church program. The steps and details are spelled out on our website. If you have any questions about Safe Church, please contact safechurch@sunnyvalepres.com.
Enter the Adult Coloring Contest & Win a Book!
Deadline: Sunday, December 4
Smiling picture of Debbie holding an adult coloring book
It turns out that coloring benefits adults, not just kids. Sunnyvale Pres member Debbie Haughey bought a coloring book from the Book Sale Cart for her married daughter, Megan, to use while in the waiting room during her husband, Christopher’s, surgery.

Online articles list multiple therapeutic benefits of coloring: it reduces anxiety and stress; relaxes your brain and improves its functioning; induces a meditative state; improves motor skills, sleep, and focus. Read more here, here, or here.

So how can you get all these benefits from something so simply fun?
  • View adult coloring books on the Book Sale Cart after Sunday worship.
  • Copy and submit a completed coloring page to the book sale cart for display and enter your name in a free book drawing. Submission deadline: Dec. 4.
  • Ask about books by Sunnyvale Pres authors, including Jack Hasling.
  • Please pray for Christopher, Megan and family.
